it was his very 1st day on a rig. and only about the 3rd or 4th connection to ever make. he was pretty jam up by the end of the week and turned into one hell of a hand after a little time working. true story. 💯
For those who don't know, those pipes weigh THOUSANDS of pounds. A 6 and 1/2" pipe is over 9000 pounds. Controlling the swinging end of it takes muscle and practice.
Probably 900 lbs. Looks like 4 or 4.5 inch around 15lbs a foot x 30' x 2 pipe (a double)= 900lbs. The guy was standing in the drillers way was a big problem, im surprised the driller didnt say move, i know my old one would have. The whole issue really stems down to the driller. The pipe loading up like it did could have hurt...Not a good driller
Wow you guys are still rocking it old school. Here on the North Sea, real ruff necks almost don’t exist anymore. Only on older rigs the still handle pipe but on the newer almost everything is automatic. Even the slips. You guys are way more efficient though.

Was not the roughnecks fault at all. Driller isnt a good driller. A smooth driller is efficient. Soaked the roughneck by being rammy then he doesnt have the smarts to tell the roughneck to move out of the line of sight so the driller could stab the pipe. Mc Donald's will never come close to what I make. even if they were $10 more per hour. 35hr/wk is no pay. Now days hands are to soft. and get to carry their feelings to work. week hands don't need to be on a rig. they do nothing but handicap the crew. I've now seen women do this job with more grit and determination than some of these men.
No throwing chain this time. Is this a new system where they don't need to throw the chain? Cause that chain throwing always looked extremely dangerous.
When I made this video throwing a chain was becoming a thing of the past. The Kelly was equipped with a "Kelly Spinner" That is an air actuated gear drive that spins the Kelly just off an air hose. In 2022 throwing a chain has become 99.9% none existent. Almost all drilling rigs have a Top Drive that does everything for you.
@@Jwine95 yeah last Kelly rig I was ever on was in 2012. I have a video of it on my channel way back then called Fastest Connection In West Texas. It was the Scan Explorer.
