  • W.C. Fields at the home he rented in 1928 while appearing in Earl Carroll's Vanities, 7th Edition. The house shown in the film at 15 Dunster Road, Great Neck, New York on Long Island looks much the same today as it did in 1928. You can see the Google image here: tinyurl.com/6ns... Confirmation that W.C. Fields rented the house at the time can be found in the booklet, "Russell Gardens Golden Anniversary: 1931-1981," a PDF of which can be obtained here: tinyurl.com/6p3... (It might take a minute to download.) There is also in the booklet an illustration of the bridge W.C. Fields walks over, "Scene in the Russell Gardens Woodland Park." A tip of the hat to Brent Walker for the sleuthing that brought this information to light.
Film by George Mann of the comedy dance team, Barto and Mann.

I grew up in the 60's on Dunster Road, 5 houses or so away from where Mr. Fields lived. The fact that he'd lived on our street was always a source of comedic pleasure and pride.

It seems he smiled more broadly and more readily in private than he did in his movies, where a smile was usually more of an ironic smirk. Interesting.
The greatest film comedian of them all.

One of the alltime best. His repertoire was so vast that he could create a sketch with almost any object in any situation. There are few who have ever come even close to his comedic genius. I agree that it's a shame his vaudevillian days were not taped for posterity.

Fields had a fairly prolific career in silent films however with the knowledge of that braying voice that was to come makes his silents are sort of a let-down this way, despite the fact that many of them are quite good.

Edgar Bergen (and Charlie McCarthy) revitalized Fields’ career in 1937 putting him in their radio show when things were a bit, well, shaky. He made some great movies after that.
