  • Lensed by Hollywood cinematographer Henry Sharp, the deceptively titled "Spanish People at Pickfair" features Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Jr., and friends in full performance mode on the grounds of their home, mocking courtship rituals and gender roles-including Charlie Chaplin’s sublime turn as a balletic sprite with a globe under his arm, prefiguring his performance in "The Great Dictator" (1940).

The quality of the footage is tremendous, it just shows that chaplin was in fact not just the best actor of the silent film era but one of the best actors of all time.

I realized watching this I actually got to meet and speak to someone in this film. I met Doug Jr. years ago. A very nice guy. We talked of Pickfair being torn down. He wasn't happy about it.

Absolutely stunning. Fairbanks Sr. is so underrated in my opinion. Glad to see the usual suspects having fun in a year that wasn't always so sunny for them. I appreciate this very much.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful little gem. Douglas Fairbanks Snr was so underrated and his comic timing is clear in these home videos. Mary Pickford was a great pioneer for female businesswomen in the motion picture industry and was so ahead of her time. Chaplin's genius shines through as always...its great to see the early idea he had of the ballet dancer with the globe which he used years later in 'The great dictator'. Douglas fairbanks Jnr was so dashing in his youth. They were all great Legends of the Hollywood era.

I’m a huge fan of Chaplin & Fairbanks but Pickford really stands out here, it’s such a shame this generation seem to know very little about her & her partners in crime

You can always see who Fairbanks is, he outshines all the rest of them. Even Chaplin is number two.

This is so cool!! Douglas Fairbanks Sr was my great grandmothers uncles and I recently found some old headshots that she kept and some of his movie stills. It’s really cool to see him and his close friends on screen their all so captivating!

It’s a shame that three of them never did a movie together! That would have worth seeing!

How did a great artist become like that? My idea is that they've always gone
    a step ahead of others.

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. who I remember growing up because he was still alive (I always thought he was British) looks quite tall compared to his father and these other men in these home movies. Fairbanks, Jr. fought heroically during World War II in special operations in Europe.

1 % Chaplin, Fairbanks or Pickford is much more worth than the whole Hollywood from 1959 to this day. Hollywood makes only crap movies these days.

Sad that an athlete of Doug's stature was a chain smoker. Doug had a great sense as a comedian. Too bad as well that he didn't reinvent himself as a light comedian once sound pictures came as his days as a swashbuckler were over.
