Maryland, My Maryland (The Free State Song)

- For 8 decades, our beloved Maryland has had a dismally racist State Song which calls Lincoln a “tyrant” and was sung as Confederate propaganda by Robert E. Lee’s troops. This is absurd and embarrassing. Maryland is a state all about the struggle for freedom and democracy. Yesterday at the Democratic National Convention my co-creator Steve Jones and I released our candidate for new state song, “Maryland My Maryland: the Free State Song.” Inspired by Elise Bryant of the D.C. Labor Chorus, it was a joy and thrill to write. Our vocalist, London Mevaa, is a high school student from Prince George’s and a musical sensation. The Delegates, including Martin O’Malley, loved it and they’re playing it again today! So please have a listen and sing along if the spirit moves you. But whatever you think-and the field is wide open for other ideas (and I keep having them!)-please let’s tell our state legislators: it’s time for the General Assembly-with its great new leaders and Senator Cheryl Kagan advocating-to retire that stupid Confederate anthem and start singing a new song of freedom and democracy for the Free State.
a town to rhyme with "democracy" - now that is songcraft! beautifully performed and written!
sometimes you have to work it...
Hypocrisy sure rhymes Haven't Seen nor Heard TRUTH mentioned Why? Afraid?
*DEMS have NOTHING* without *Trump.* THE CURE: *--> GIT-MO CAGES for Dems!*
Now this is a giant step forward in expanding the telling of the real history of Maryland and an awesome example of updating the statehood song to reflect and be incusive of the people whom the State of Maryland is rightfully proud of. What a great collaboration, Jamie Raskin lyrics. Steve Jones music and Geneva's powerful voice. It was so moving I played it several times. It has my vote!
Nice tune. My two cents would be instead of “Rockville to Baltimore” 50 times, change the town name to sequence of names “to Baltimore”.
Annapolis
This says that Brookeville, MD was the US capital for a day, but the Sandy Spring Historical society says SS was (no link). Please explain. Anyhow, that locale is historically important, too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brookeville,_Maryland info.summeratsandyspring.org/the-one-about-the-brookeville-quakers-and-a-war-time-president
@@michellekgross5627 what about fort McHenry (got a shout out in National anthem but not the state) with out it British would have cut us in 2 and we could have stayed a Colony of England
Definitely add the names of our many other wonderful towns
London your voice is gorgeous and so are you! I love this. Sincerely, Jim's daughter :)
A beautiful song that captures the essence of this great Free State. Thank you.
I think that the piano and singing were wonderful... But the lyrics aren't fair. If you're going to get specific with names and places then you're going to need to change it or make an hour long song not to leave anyone out. What about the Italians of little Italy? Or Bethesda or Frederick? You see just like someone else said... There are other songs that are great examples and beautiful representations without naming names. And the Rockville to Baltimore chorus is stuck in there way too many times...
I say we hold a contest and encourage Marylanders to submit songs! Just my 2 cents.
Thanks Jamie, much appreciated. 👍🏾♥️👍🏻
Love it! Do you have lyrics, sheet music, chords or tabs available?
Good lyrics. I think you represent Rockville. LIke that; used to live there.
Fabulous work, Jamie and Steve! BUT PLEASE post the terrific singer's name here, too!
London Mevaa
Beautiful! Can you add the lyrics in the description?
Excellent contemporary song.
OUR DIXIE FOREVER
Amen
SHES NEVER HAD A LOSS! DOWN WITH THE EAGLE! UP WITH THE CROSS!
I love the entire composition. Thanks for this heart warming lyrics and melody and spirit lifting song!
A healing song. Why is it so hard to wipe away the Lost Cause as a hurtful time in history. Do we have the courage? Can we believe in the good inside of us? Can we heal? YES we can.
Wow! This is a fabulous state song!! Between Jamie's lyrics. Steve's music and London's vocals, my heart is filled with inspiration and my eyes are moist with tears of gratitude!!
Proud to be A Marylander!
Beautiful performances by Steve Jones and London Mevaa. I can't wait to see her own career soar!
Love it. A huge improvement and long-overdue break from the old version that reflects our State's shameful racist past. Well done! I could sing this song and feel proud of my state and deeply moved at the same time. Terrific!
The sign of a despots heel on thy shore
Terrific song covering the last 170 or so of our state's history. But Maryland has important history that goes back even farther! For instance, Maryland was founded in the 1630s as a haven for persecuted Roman Catholics. The Battle of Baltimore in 1814 was important in establishing our nation's true independence from Great Britain and our position as a nation to be taken seriously.
I love the refrain: "From the western mountains to the Ocean City shore, Rockville to Baltimore!" And Monocacy rhymes with democracy! What inspiring words about our Free State. Thanks, Jamie, Steve and London for creating an inspiring alternative to "The despot's heal is on thy shore."
Not exactly a toe tapper but neither was the original. Can't imagine the USNA singing this. Would really rather keep the tune we have always sung. (and please get why we are the "Free State" right. We were free to drink!)
Thank you, Jamie. This makes me proud to be a Marylander.
A wonderful song.
What an incredible NEW rendition!! Please make THIS our state song! Sung so beautifully by London!
I personally think it’s a good song, but Maryland is officially the old line state, which I feel this pays no attention to that our our colonial history. A big part of Maryland is that it was one of the thirteen colonies, and stuff like the old line, fort McHenry, and so on, is entirely unmentioned, and I feel that’s a very important thing to keep in the song. Furthermore, the mention of cities makes it feel like it’s ignoring our farmer and rural based some. I live on a farm, and I don’t think it really represents the rural folks.
Other than that, it’s a good song. I don’t think it encompasses our colonial history enough for an actual state song.
Lovely listening experience.
Although Maryland was a "Free State" as it relates to slavery, "The Free State" became a Maryland nickname in relation to the objection of Marylanders to the 1919 National Prohibition Act.
Also, only 2 other states mention specific individuals in their state songs. A truly timeless, non-controversial state song will not include the names of specific individuals. The national anthem, and "America The Beautiful" are good examples.
London Mevaa's singing is so sincere and soulful, beautiful. And thank you, Jamie, for your lyrics. They're not "just pretty," they have something at stake, something to be proud of. A ringing reply with values worthy to hold up, giving the bum's rush to the old, dreadful verses of the old State song. Great job, Jamie, and everyone who helped you in the process.
Great song and exquisite depiction of Maryland history....wow!!!
Grammy contender!!!
Where can I find sheet music for this?! :)
And lyrics :)
I'm so proud of my niece!! I need a stronger word for proud!!!
Your niece??? Awesome, I am proud too.
Yes!!
Patriotic perhaps.
Top notch performance by a natural born Queen of sound!!
Bravisima!!
Thanks to the DC Labor Choir and our respected Representative Jamie Raskin! We are thankful, also, for your safety and urge a strong, peaceful, yet definitive response to the insurrection.
Awesome
Great song, Jamie, and wonderful musicians to debut it.
Wunderbar! F. Douglas, H. Tubman, R. Carson, E.A.Poe, E. Cummings, T. Marshall -- So many and so much to be proud of as a Marylander. The singer, the accompanist, the writers - Bravo to all.
this is wonderful! So superior to the last clunker.
Fantastic! Makes me proud to have grown up in Maryland! And I love that this song can teach, entertain, and induce nostalgic wistfulness. Steve Jones, shout out from a fellow Cedar Laner
I wonder how free Maryland felt as a state when it was being held at gunpoint to stay in the Union
And now white people are being held at gunpoint to go forward with their DIEversity agenda.
A great song for the 21st Century.
HAHA
Nope. The Maryland Anthem is timeless and for all generations.
@@myrealnamewontfi7289 I guess you haven't been paying attention. The Maryland General Assembly just voted to get rid of this horror show. I guess you can't be timeless of your time is up.
Just because some corrupt government changes something officially doesnt make it so@@stefanieweldon2216
Bravo! This song is perfect. Hope it is approved as the new state song.
A welcome ear worm, Jamie.
While a nice tune and the vocalist has a lovely voice, this is NOT a state anthem and almost as hard to sing as the national anthem. And four minutes in length? Plus, are we sure we want to use the names of people who are in vogue today but may be reviled in the future? Haven't we just gone through that?
A great song that is contemporary. Finally!
Ditto to David Pitts below - I never even got "Rockville," assuming it was some statement about Baltimore. But a number of different names will I think be too confusing for a public song. So no soultion.
Thanks, Jamie, for this song and for all you do to keep Maryland the Free State!
Steve Jones is a genius. And London Mevaa is a awesome singer with a bueatiful voice
Great performance... Lovely song! The lyrics provide a very good historical overview of Maryland. Well done!!!
Thank you, Jamie, for this new, overdue approach. Can you cut a few verses to make it more singable? Very moving; what is needed to make it official?
Although I live in MOCO I am concerned the use of Rockville to Baltimore might be disrespectful to our residents of Western Maryland. Maybe Frostburg to Rockville to baltimore just thinking here
Lyrics go: "Western Mountains to the Ocean City Shore - Rockville to Baltimore" - West to East, South to North - rural: urban. Jamie tells me there are 270 towns in Maryland - I guess we need more verses!
Agree. Way too much Baltimore. Annapolis history ignored. Mts to ocean perfect.
Frostburg to Baltimore!!
I like “Friendsville to Baltimore.” Friendsville is the last town in Maryland along I-68 before the western border. Only a few hundred residents. It’s more consistent with the west-east imagery and it provides a contrast of small town / big city. Rockville is not that far from Baltimore. Also, no shade, but Rockville isn’t very romantic sounding 🙃
Thank you Jamie for this wonderfully meaningful State song. And to London Mevaa -- couldn't be more proud of you. What a gorgeous voice to sing such a great song! Looking forward to watching your career as one of Maryland's best.
Can you stand our girl?? She got this about 24 hours before she performed this!!
what is a singer ? instagram ?
Did not expect to get teary-eyed listening to a state anthem, but the Elijah Cummings verse sent me over the edge. Thanks, Jamie. Proud to call you my rep.
I had the same reaction Nora!
My law professor, my representative, and my future President.
Thank you for your valient efforts to replace our racist state song. Your song is really beautiful! I couldn't help notice, however, the omission of Maryland's indigenous people from the song. The Algonquin people were prosperous in Maryland long before settlers arrived and I think they deserve to be included in our state song too.
So proud of my brother-in-law, Steve Jones for helping to write the lyrics and for writing and performing the music! So well done! A wonderful collaborative effort with Jamie Raskin on the words and singer, London Mevaa, along with others who helped to give their input. Some have commented on the repetition of "Rockville." If you don't like it, substitute "Rockville" with your hometown or cities and towns from all over the state. The song with still rhyme and then can become personalized.
Pretty good, but imo they they should have kept the tune of Oh Tannenbaum.
The old line state not the free state blasphemy!
21 Virginians disliked this.
Piano and vocals are fantastic! Lyrics need some more diversity. Instead of Rockville to Baltimore 10 times add other towns/cities. (Monocacy and democracy is golden writing). Should also hit on the agricultural roots of eastern shore, western and southern maryland. It ties the state together better. Just my 2 cents , still 1000x better then anything I'll ever write and a welcomed change
An astonishing and beautiful song. As a MOCO resident, I'm proud of you guys. Thank you Jamie, Steve and London.
you can't change history and you can't change the truth
My suggestion is that the new version celebrate a few more Marylanders:
Babe Ruth
Michael Phelps
Jim Henson
Eubie Blake
Cab Calloway
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Cass Elliot
zappa
Old song still better but cool none the less
The piano player is weak. It’s an apology for maryland
Blasphemy! not worthy of Maryland go live in New york.
Congrats to London for singing beautifully and to Jamie Raskin and Steven Jones for writing the new song. A great job by all!
EXCELLENT, a fine replacement that we can be proud of!
I WILL S T I L L SING MARYLAND MY MARYLAND AT THE PREAKNESS
It's encouraging to see a state revising its state song!
Great song. It’s never possible to please everyone.
No way will this replace our state song written by James Ryder Randall after the 6th Massachusetts Regiment fired on Baltimore citizens at Pratt and President Streets n 19 April 1861 and forced Maryland to remain in the Union. Lincoln had a judge pulled from the bench during a trial on the Eastern Shore and threw Habeas Corpus out the window. Thank you Hettie Carey, Avenge the Patriotic Gore That Flecked the streets of Baltimore.
I actually love this song; would make a few tweaks to the lyrics and the singer really needs to articulate ‘Catonsville’ better (I assume that was what she was singing?)
Hes a "Constitutional Law Professor" his father was a Russian immigrant who started a progressive "Think Tank" in D.C. called ISP. This is how weeds kill your beautiful garden. How do you kill weeds? Seperate them from the earth they think they are so deeply rooted in.
I teared up when i heard this. like, i could feel the soul in this one!!
MARYLAND MY MOTHER STATE!!
oh boy this sucks, traitors
Long live Maryland my Maryland. The Confederacy will never die in our hearts.
The original is better.
Ravens games need it
The old version is better.
Infinitely better
I like the old song better
God this is awful cringe. You should be embarrassed thinking this trash that does a city by city callout is worthy of replacing the based original.
The basic song is fine I just think they should leave "people named out" what about Babe Ruth , Poe, ,Key they want to change it either be diverse or leave people out of it. (Hate maryland my maryland sucks) I just waiting for recall of 1$ bill geroge was slave owner (think all low denominations were) statues should be moved to a museum to (preserve history) that goes through all the decades of inequality and as leaving be a hallway to so the future lined with mirrors with wording to the effect you looked at the past now your looking at our future what role will you play, love each other...
Pay it forward treat others as you wish be treated.
new state song maybe?
No.
The song Maryland, My Maryland can't be re-written. It was written because the author was opposed to "The Despot" - Abraham Lincoln ordered troops to be sent to Washington, D.C., and the author was appalled that the troops were being transported through Baltimore.... Just One Month ago this Loser Raskin was attacking President Trump over his idea to send Troops to quell the ongoing Riots in Portland and elsewhere. Raskin seems to have more in common with the original confederate sympathizers in his remarks against Trump.....
July 21, 2020, Maryland Matters: "...Raskin, a constitutional scholar, said Trump’s use of “secret police” violated the Constitution. “The federal government has limited police powers - and what it’s limited to is federal offenses, things like assaulting federal officers and crossing state lines with contraband..."
You cannot erase history, but these
Progressive democrats are truly trying. Be proud of our local and national history. A lot of blood was shed to get to where we are today. It cannot be in vain. Stop trying to erase history and learn from it. Time to fix Baltimore and its crime and crumbling buildings that the Democrats have allowed to happen.
Where has all of the money gone??
A new song can’t erase it. Raskin would like you to think it can. He’s just another hater who is unwilling to work across party lines. Instead of spending time writing songs, that time is best spent doing what you were hired to do. That’s what we pay you for with our hard earned tax money.
Lincoln removed the writ of habeus Corpus which means the right of a trial for the legally elected government of Maryland and Baltimore. But that has been erased. Federal troops were raised to march on their own nation. Plus they keep saying "The Free State" like it is about slavery. Maryland was for alcohol and opposed the Prohibition Act, that is how we got the term "The Free State". We are "The Old Line State". The Old song was a poem but to music not this garbage they are coming up with now.
This should be our new anthem. It's so much better than the original song sympathizing with the Baltimore Rioters anyway.
Cringe. You aren't a true marylander
Sorry, but this beautiful and emotional song treats Maryland as if, apart from Rachel Carson, he have no white heroes and heroines
this is way better than the current one
