Maryland, My Maryland (The Free State Song)

  • For 8 decades, our beloved Maryland has had a dismally racist State Song which calls Lincoln a “tyrant” and was sung as Confederate propaganda by Robert E. Lee’s troops. This is absurd and embarrassing. Maryland is a state all about the struggle for freedom and democracy. Yesterday at the Democratic National Convention my co-creator Steve Jones and I released our candidate for new state song, “Maryland My Maryland: the Free State Song.” Inspired by Elise Bryant of the D.C. Labor Chorus, it was a joy and thrill to write. Our vocalist, London Mevaa, is a high school student from Prince George’s and a musical sensation. The Delegates, including Martin O’Malley, loved it and they’re playing it again today! So please have a listen and sing along if the spirit moves you. But whatever you think-and the field is wide open for other ideas (and I keep having them!)-please let’s tell our state legislators: it’s time for the General Assembly-with its great new leaders and Senator Cheryl Kagan advocating-to retire that stupid Confederate anthem and start singing a new song of freedom and democracy for the Free State.

Now this is a giant step forward in expanding the telling of the real history of Maryland and an awesome example of updating the statehood song to reflect and be incusive of the people whom the State of Maryland is rightfully proud of. What a great collaboration, Jamie Raskin lyrics. Steve Jones music and Geneva's powerful voice. It was so moving I played it several times. It has my vote!

Nice tune. My two cents would be instead of “Rockville to Baltimore” 50 times, change the town name to sequence of names “to Baltimore”.

I think that the piano and singing were wonderful... But the lyrics aren't fair. If you're going to get specific with names and places then you're going to need to change it or make an hour long song not to leave anyone out. What about the Italians of little Italy? Or Bethesda or Frederick? You see just like someone else said... There are other songs that are great examples and beautiful representations without naming names. And the Rockville to Baltimore chorus is stuck in there way too many times...
I say we hold a contest and encourage Marylanders to submit songs! Just my 2 cents.

Terrific song covering the last 170 or so of our state's history. But Maryland has important history that goes back even farther! For instance, Maryland was founded in the 1630s as a haven for persecuted Roman Catholics. The Battle of Baltimore in 1814 was important in establishing our nation's true independence from Great Britain and our position as a nation to be taken seriously.

I personally think it’s a good song, but Maryland is officially the old line state, which I feel this pays no attention to that our our colonial history. A big part of Maryland is that it was one of the thirteen colonies, and stuff like the old line, fort McHenry, and so on, is entirely unmentioned, and I feel that’s a very important thing to keep in the song. Furthermore, the mention of cities makes it feel like it’s ignoring our farmer and rural based some. I live on a farm, and I don’t think it really represents the rural folks.
Other than that, it’s a good song. I don’t think it encompasses our colonial history enough for an actual state song.

    Lovely listening experience.
Although Maryland was a "Free State" as it relates to slavery, "The Free State" became a Maryland nickname in relation to the objection of Marylanders to the 1919 National Prohibition Act.
Also, only 2 other states mention specific individuals in their state songs. A truly timeless, non-controversial state song will not include the names of specific individuals. The national anthem, and "America The Beautiful" are good examples.

It’s more consistent with the west-east imagery and it provides a contrast of small town / big city. Rockville is not that far from Baltimore. Also, no shade, but Rockville isn’t very romantic sounding 🙃

A wonderful collaborative effort with Jamie Raskin on the words and singer, London Mevaa, along with others who helped to give their input. Some have commented on the repetition of "Rockville." If you don't like it, substitute "Rockville" with your hometown or cities and towns from all over the state. The song with still rhyme and then can become personalized.

The song Maryland, My Maryland can't be re-written. It was written because the author was opposed to "The Despot" - Abraham Lincoln ordered troops to be sent to Washington, D.C., and the author was appalled that the troops were being transported through Baltimore.... Just One Month ago this Loser Raskin was attacking President Trump over his idea to send Troops to quell the ongoing Riots in Portland and elsewhere. Raskin seems to have more in common with the original confederate sympathizers in his remarks against Trump.....
July 21, 2020, Maryland Matters: "...Raskin, a constitutional scholar, said Trump’s use of “secret police” violated the Constitution. “The federal government has limited police powers - and what it’s limited to is federal offenses, things like assaulting federal officers and crossing state lines with contraband..."

You cannot erase history, but these
Progressive democrats are truly trying. Be proud of our local and national history. A lot of blood was shed to get to where we are today. It cannot be in vain. Stop trying to erase history and learn from it. Time to fix Baltimore and its crime and crumbling buildings that the Democrats have allowed to happen.
Where has all of the money gone??
A new song can’t erase it. Raskin would like you to think it can. He’s just another hater who is unwilling to work across party lines. Instead of spending time writing songs, that time is best spent doing what you were hired to do. That’s what we pay you for with our hard earned tax money.

    • @DomDowgGaming

Lincoln removed the writ of habeus Corpus which means the right of a trial for the legally elected government of Maryland and Baltimore. But that has been erased. Federal troops were raised to march on their own nation. Plus they keep saying "The Free State" like it is about slavery. Maryland was for alcohol and opposed the Prohibition Act, that is how we got the term "The Free State". We are "The Old Line State". The Old song was a poem but to music not this garbage they are coming up with now.
