    Sharpness is probably greatly affected by testing this lens on a Sony sensor with thick filter stack though. Corners should (if the lens is any good) look much better on a Leica.

    This lens can be seen as the mass production version of the hand-made 28mm f/2 Apoqualia from MS-Optics, both aesthetically and optically, down to the field curvature.

    Reminds me of my old Industar-50-2! Except with worse image quality in the corners. Still, a fun lens, you can't complain when modern lens companies do something like this.

    Looking at this video, i'd have no trouble taking quality photos with this lens. It makes the leica pocketable and looks cool. When used at the right F#'s it's very reasonably sharp but i'd really like to use this on an M3 where it's shortcomings are not so noticeable on film. The deal breaker though is not having click stops on the aperture ring.

    This is not a landscape lens. You put this lens on a Leica rangefinder for candid snapshots/documentary/street photography where sharpness does not matter.

    • @0M0rty
      @0M0rty 10 месяцев назад +6

      What's also worth mentioning is that wide angle lenses designed for Leica cameras tend to perform especially poorly on Sony bodies, due to thick filter stack which introduces additional field curvature.
      Not that I think this lens would be corner sharp on Leica but it'd probably perform somewhat better.

    I'd be so curious to see results on an M10. I used the Leica 50mm 1.4 asph on my Sony cameras for 5-6 years as a full time wedding photographer, and I don't think I ever got a sharp corner, because the two just don't work great together.
    All the same, though, I think this might be a lens that is greater than the sum of its traits? Lol. Like someone else said in the comments, I think at f8 as a street lens, or wide open for interesting portraits, this could provide some serious interest for such a low price.

    Great and useful review as always!
    I will stick to my selection of 28s offering a wide variety in style and character:
    - Canon RF 28 2.8 pancake
    - Leica Summaron 28 5.6
    - Voigtländer 28 mm/1:2,0 Ultron asph.
    The field curvature of this lens is barely to be used in your preference with the Funleader.

      @anupew3276 10 месяцев назад +1

      got Industar 50-2 too, fiddlyness factor is so high its almost unusable, this one seems to be way more usable :D Cant say much about image quality, I think its a bit worse than this little thing in center and midframe. Maybe not on the corner, but really bad anyway. Never tested it rigorously and its possible that horrible image quality is just an user error as working with it is quite a nightmare for me :)

    Symmetrical RF wide angles doesn't work well on a Sony sensor with thick sensor filter stack. The camera need to be Kolari upgraded to be tested really, or get a Leica.

      100% about micro contrast and rendering. They make everything else just at the right amount, in one word, nice. Nothing else.
      That Leica experience all can be replicated using other camera but all stupid snob would say you pay all for those tech but use it like 70s.
      Analogy is like cooking knife, you can cut anything with usual chef knife type or santoku or chinese cleaver (depend on the culture) but having boning knife just make life easier for that specific job.

    What in the world is going on with that field curvature at 5:43? My goodness, it looks like someone just picked random parts of the image to be in focus.
    Could still be a fun lens, but that's quite the "quirk."

    • @peterebel7899
      @peterebel7899 10 месяцев назад +1

      Well observed!
      You get a close subject in the center sharp while you gave infinity sharp in the edges.
      Great for framing a far subject behind close foreground.
      But less gras for an average center focussed composition.
      If the field curvature would be the other way around I would buy this lens instantly.

  • @izelennkhan

    Feels too expensive for the optical performance. If priced in the $100-150 range, it would be a cool lens to have, but... I mean, uncorrected field curvature? I expect better from the 7artisans 35 f/5.6 pancake lens, and *that* is priced $99...
