Greetings from Brazil. We love the Chevrolet Montana, as it was called here. And we, too, miss this car. For some reason, we still have the second generation available new here, but it is a crappy car, only people who need a workhorse buy one today. Ford stopped selling the Courier here about 10 years ago, without any good reason, because it was a good car too. But today we still have some options, Fiat Strada and VW Saveiro are the best ones here.

It's worse than that, VW simply does not build Saveiro in right-hand drive and the costings to do so make it unreasonably expensive. Now if only VWSA could modify an existing Vivo platform...

My 1.4L 2009 model just done 410 000kms. Jus thad a head gasket let go at 220 000kms. Very little issue with it. Deleted the cat and I ended up saving almost 2L per 100kms in fuel and a little bit more power. After all this distance it still hardly uses any oil. One issue however with all of these vehicles is the keyway on the crank where the crank pully slides on starts to ovalize over time especially when you get close to 400 000kms or there about. This obviously results in the cam timing starting to lag and the longer you drive the worse it gets eventually it feels like you are driving a 500cc. After spending R36K on replacing the lower control arms, bushings, cv joints, brake disks, gear linkage bushings I figured I might as well drop in a new engine. I travel A LOT of farm roads. I would say close to a third of the mileage was on farm roads. Solid bakkie. I love it.

As much as I sympathise, I’m also jealous at the same time!. At least in South Africa you have the opportunity to buy the Nissan NP200 new and others like the Corsa utility used. I’m in the UK and unless you can find a Proton Jumbuck (only available from 2003-2007 I think), there are no options for anyone looking for a small pickup or Bakkie. I am a self employed window cleaner and have long since come to the conclusion that a small bakkie would be absolutely ideal for my work, much more suitable than a van like I currently have to use. The only option, other than the Proton, I have is the dropside version of the Fiat Doblo. These are available in the UK, but are too expensive for me new, and far too scarce used. There just doesn’t seem to be a market for this type of vehicle in the UK (otherwise there wouldn’t be so few of the Doblo dropside available). I have looked into the possibility of importing an NP200, but as far as I can find out, it is virtually impossible to import a vehicle from South Africa into the UK unless over 10 years old. This is a great pity, as South Africa is also RHD, so it would be much more convenient than getting used to a LHD (obviously not impossible though). I do also really fancy a Nissan 1400, not as a work vehicle (payload is too small), but just as a cool runaround with a set of retro alloy wheels. Hey ho, will just have to keep daydreaming!.
Such a great video Ciro. I agree to those words....”Bring back the Opel Corsa Utility, bring back the 1/2 tonner”. Why on earth are we forced to buy large bakkies when there’s a hungry market for the 1/2 tonners and what they have to offer.
I’m in the fleet management business. The manufacturers all say that their vans (I.e. Vw caddy, Opel Combo) are replacement for these vehicles. I disagree completely; vans, a) have no street cred whatsoever, b) have no leisure use and c) are extremely expensive.
Used to have this bakkie but sadly I had to sell it today because the bonnet would not open at all so the engine overheated driving home (yes the engine seized that's why I sold it) Anyway I really do miss this bakkie because it served me well through the years If anyone is looking to buy this bakkie I would definitely recommend it You'll love it
I have only found this channel recently. But a mate of mine and I were talking not long ago. About how we would love the polo ute that Brazil got. Branded as a vivo ute.
I can echo all you've just said... this little bakkie was a champion of the people, the interface between a company product and the payout, the family runaround, the mobile workshop, solid build quality and nice to drive. And then GM stepped in and messed up, as usual. Ai...Americans, sometimes, ai! There are a few bakkies in this class available today or coming soon, some not in SA and destination of the rest to be confirmed. 🥃, here's to hoping for more options than just the NP200 (which is not on same level as this Corsa was - just saying)! Cheers Ciro🥃
On the 1.4 models they also lowered the gearing which meant Freeway speeds were annoying but it also meant it could carry heavy loads without struggling too much
Well said....I still don't understand why we don't have them new on the floor...This bakkie is in demand so much I want one as well but the owners don't wanna let go of them.
You forgot airbags lol. We bought this bakkie in 2005 in the famous Granada Red metallic color which was a special order back then. We drove ours until it had 170 000km on the clock. Also had a water pump leak at 40 000 and computer error at 120 000 but other than that it was rock solid performer.

Tbh this generation Corsa is actually better than the newer one... It actually still looks good Inside and out to this day And all the engine options were great
Actually Ciro it’s not a regular corsa chassis. Sure it’s based on the corsa but it uses the platform from the combo van that is stronger than the corsa platform. So in a nutshell it is but not quite
If I had the option to get one at comparative prices of that era but in today's prices... I would buy one without a second thaught. Prices are insane and a small utility bukkie is insane value for money. I WANT THEM BACK, I'LL BE ONE OF THE FIRST BUYERS
I think the water thirst issue might be Opel related? I could be wrong, my Isuzu never needed a water pump. I just bought a 1.4 Chev Utility. I'm keen to see how it copes with the km's.
What are the major dealerships thinking, no new small bakkies, why?, All respect to the Opel Corsa utility! . I drive a Fiat Strada 1.4 extended cab, done over 305 000km, best consumption figure I got was 19,5 km per litre, it takes a heavy load on the back and hardly feels it.

Bring back the opel corsa for sure ❤️
Great bakkie, bullet proof.
We have a 2007 model that we bought brand new and last year (2020) it clocked 200 000km and still it feels like the day we got it
Tbh this generation Corsa is actually better than the newer one...
It actually still looks good Inside and out to this day
And all the engine options were great
Actually Ciro it’s not a regular corsa chassis. Sure it’s based on the corsa but it uses the platform from the combo van that is stronger than the corsa platform. So in a nutshell it is but not quite
We need a Nissan 1400 review as well
I'd definitely be first in line to buy a new utility. Manufacturers need to bring them back
Nice bakkie but problem is 1.7Dti I have one. It has some special "ECU" it goes the diesel pump stops..you will struggle heavy!..
Its a segment in the market which Toyota and Isuzu does not cater for and has more potential according to me. Thanks Ciro.
If I had the option to get one at comparative prices of that era but in today's prices... I would buy one without a second thaught. Prices are insane and a small utility bukkie is insane value for money. I WANT THEM BACK, I'LL BE ONE OF THE FIRST BUYERS
The best ever, 16 years with my utility
I’m 6.8feet and I sat comfortable in that bakkie.
Had two of them. Awesome bakkies.
I bought mine over 220 000km and still driving nice.
It's called Montana in Brazil. Like that car has a good driving position. Bring back the commodore ute.
december 2011 bought a 1.7dti second hand with 100 000km on the clock. i’m about to hit 2777 777km
Please try to add images of some of the cars you'd be mentioning, otherwise awesome review for an awesome car.
I think the water thirst issue might be Opel related? I could be wrong, my Isuzu never needed a water pump. I just bought a 1.4 Chev Utility. I'm keen to see how it copes with the km's.
What are the major dealerships thinking, no new small bakkies, why?,
All respect to the Opel Corsa utility! .
I drive a Fiat Strada 1.4 extended cab, done over 305 000km, best consumption figure I got was 19,5 km per litre, it takes a heavy load on the back and hardly feels it.
Can de give us one wit a rear wheel drive. Imagine wth it can do.
HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE DIETER PEY
😂 Hi!
Bring back this bakkie....... please
