The Rise of Cresselia in Gen 9 OU.

  • Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen the triumphant return of many Legendaries of the past, thanks to Pokemon Home Compatibility. Cresselia has always been on the weaker side compared to other legendaries, but in Gen 9 it's seen the greatest success of its entire career, being officially ranked in OU for the first time as the August tier shift.
What is the reason behind this Stellar Rise for Cresselia? Let's take a look. and also discuss why I don't enjoy the Tera mechanic for a bit too.
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it.
Only Jim knows about the viability of Cresselia. All other sources of information are liars and are inaccurate.

My Outro is a remix made by me that I submitted to the Viper Rapper RUclips channel:
    • Viper - You'll Goin Ma...
Some will never figure out how to get Cresselia in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Cresselia Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Cresselia Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
    Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

tbf, cress was a bit broken or quite viable in gen 5 OU - not for any other reason than Gen 5 being a shitshow, ofc, but while duggy was still legal it was a highly viable sun wincon, as the typing and sun boosted moonlight made it borderline unbreakable if you could remove the tar, which duggy happens to do an *outstanding* job of.

If that works. Trapping is banned in the modern meta but back then it was unreliable. You have to dedicate 3 mons (Ninetails, Defensive Xatu, and Dugtrio) just to support Cresselia. If any of them fall, the strategy completely breaks. Sand and rain were top tier weathers in Gen V.

It's interesting to see the singles context as someone who primarily enjoys VGC. Tera and Lunar Blessing made Cresselia far better at doing the things she's always done, and there was a top with someone using the Stored Power set, which is extremely radical in doubles. It's a shame that her original toolkit just isn't nearly as good as the Stored Power set in singles, so you can't even use those sets as a surprise Best of One set.

For what i could notice, cresselia is there to set trick room 100% of the times in close teams sheets formats (vgc). If i try to spore it it has safety gogles, if i try to taunt it it has mental herb, if i attack it becomes a different type and tanks it. I cannot take this any longer.

It doesn’t really make trickroom more viable. It’s an option but let’s be real you definitely are using hattereen for suicide lead and the slowtwins are significantly better as a long term trickroom setter because of regenerator and you aren’t gonna run 3 dedicated setters because cresselia isn’t gonna be contributing offensively when running trickroom since it actively needs calm mind to do anything it needs recovery to get enough calm minds and then you have one move that gets walled long enough that you can never get set up. Its actively a bad choice of second setter but a bad setter in a metagame where trickroom’s straight up just a normal viable part of the meta is way better then a dedicated trickroom setter in past gens where it just wasn’t worth it. It’s also WAY too fast for trickroom to do anything after trickroom is set. Even ursalana’s pushing it for how fast is tolerable but luckily for it ferrothorn’s gone so the boundary for outslowing all the opponent’s mons is a bit more manageable and it’s speed tying gambits that run Min speed and only the ones on trickroom run 0 speed iv with speed minus nature so you are good since most teams gambit is the slowest Mon. For reference if you wanna bring cresslia to the maximum acceptable speed of 135 ( outslow 0 speed investment gambits with a max speed iv by one point) you have to drop to level 86. At that point not only does the slowtwins have more longevity they are just bulkier since they are just naturally slower then gambit without even considering that water typing attached to the normal slow twins improves their defensive profile and same for the poison typing on galar ones.

I loved BDSP UU Cresselia. It was one of the bulkiest mons in the tier, and with Calm Mind and Moonlight (thanks to no Tyranitar, niche Hippowdon, no Drizzle, and vogue Drought) both one of the most notoriously difficult to kill and most powerful. There were quite a few calls for its suspect testing or ban (that never panned out).
As in this gen, poisoning it and spamming Knock Off were both effective at taking it down. Heracross was also uniquely positioned to seal its doom thanks to Guts boosted Megahorn. And because of its necessary coverage, Metagross also consistently stopped Cresselia in its tracks.
Despite having that sweeping potential, Cresselia was simply not strong enough nor invulnerable enough to have that potential against what was back then an average team. Still, its unique characteristics made it an invaluable team member for the archetypes of Sun, Trick Room, and Bulky Offense. One of the MVP's of that game's UU in its heyday.

  • @mateohuf3811

Gen 9 has got to be the most mind numbing generation we have had so far, every game devolves into 50/50s with your terra win condition or just using terra to brute force through the opposing team, and bc of the extra coverage and power terra affords balance and other bulkier styles of teams have pretty much become unviable at top play, one of the most recent tournament games was literally decided by a turn 1 iron valiant speed tie, if that’s not a symptom of an unhealthy meta then idk what is. I understand that smogon wants to keep the casual playerbase happy by keeping the generational gimmick but honestly if someone stops playing gen 9 bc they can’t use terra then they prob weren’t gonna play for very long anyway. Also there are other metagames like natdex where you can spam all the broken things to your hearts content. We already have to deal with balancing all of the new broken pokemon and dealing with th e limited hazard removal options, we don’t need terra making things more complicated.

I appreciate the nuanced take on Cresselia's identity being converted into yet another boost sweeper. I'm really over terastalization, and examples like Cresselia get brought up in its defense, which I find is an oversimplification.
Anyhow, while Tera helps Cress dodge the move altogether, the lack of Knock Off distribution compared to last gen means it's less frequent that Cress finds herself even needing to blow tera to get the job done.

      @SuperEljafru 9 месяцев назад

@@powerfulberry237 i get what you’re saying, but more often than not psychic *is* a valuable part of a pokémon’s kit and identity. armarouge + indeedee is threatening because psy terrain + expanding force blows things up. this is a combo that’s persisted well beyond the powercreep that snuffed out dozogiri - you basically NEED a dark type or tera to combat this combo, or some specific way to beat it.
this is true for other psychic types as well. as it happens, there are a number of common offensive pairings for the type, such as fighting, fairy, or fire that create deadly coverage. because, as it turns out, psychic type is strong when there’s nothing that can stop it. that’s why “psyspam” is a team archetype that’s existed for generations in singles.
if a mons stat line works well with a type, then it’s good for all it’s attributes. psychic is an offensive typing, much like ice. lapras and iron bundle have essentially the *exact* same typing and coverage - but one is uber and the other untiered. slow ice types are bad, fast ones are good. you can’t separate a pokémon’s fundamental traits from each other because then you’re no longer talking about the pokémon; much like how jimmothy stated that cress this gen is good because it stopped being cress.

The falling off of Ttar, removal of pursuit, and terastalization gave Cresselia everything it needed to be a successful OU mon. It's crazy because powerful ghost, dark, and fairy types are still not in short supply. It's new strategy is comparable to Espathra but that's only scratching the surface of its potential. It's still a potential dual screener and utility mon. It's even better in Doubles now thanks to its new move Lunar Blessing. I doubt it will ever be ban worthy like Espathra was. Espathra passively snowballs out of control with speed boost while Cresellia needs to commit to such a strategy.

Honestly, I don't know how happy people are about Cress, but I'm extremely happy for its presence. A defensive stopgap in a generation that desperately needs more, and has to commit to an Espathra impression (but can still do it alright).
That being said, I do agree that boost sweeper is not Cress' unique quality and I do legitimately agree it makes Tera more stale. I personally believe that Tera being used in this way is a result of not enough experimentation, though. There's many ways to potentially use Tera on a team if you wanted to, and people focus on using it on their big boosty sweepers because those Pokemon can run away with a game. The maximum potential reward for putting in less effort. I predict that if Tera types got revealed before match start then the number of these attempts will go down. Part of the reason it works so well on boost sweepers is the element of surprise, after all

    • @royalgelly8948
      @royalgelly8948 9 месяцев назад +2

Why wouldnt you use tera this way, however? There is no better way to use Tera than to bait in a check, start setting up on it, and then wiping the floor. It also isnt like its a 1v6 either. Annihilating defensive walls with insane breakers we've seen this gen (Gambit, Bax, Enam) and then running away with a stored power, dragon dance, calm mind, or substitute sweep has enabled so many otherwise shit players to spam the ladder with teams like psyspam, screens, or general hyperoffense and it just works. When a game becomes 20 turns instead of 100, every turn matters and has brought games down to luck more than ever. Besides the usual freezes/flinches/crits, we now have to run the 25/25/25/25 of do they terastalize into type A, type B, throw up a sub, or just dont tera at all. Preview is gonna reduce this to a 50/50, but it could be argued that isnt any better. In addition to this we now have bs like Dire Claw, Ceaseless Edge. Advocating for innovation isnt going to do anything if there isnt any innovation left to do without handicapping yourself. People tried to innovate at the end of pre-home, but that meta had already been fully explored.

      Like kingambit, sneasler, baxcalibur etc.
The issue with boost sweepers is they can easily start sweeping with 1 or 2 turns of setup, and tera lets them avoid lethal attacks or status that would prevent it. It gives them those turns for free, or at least create a complete 50/50 to guess for game, and many people find that when games come to these moments very often its uncompetitive.

Cresselia is my favorite Pokémon, and the thing about the “distinct identity” for her is being the most unfairly overshadowed legendary ever
All the times Cresselia has been relevant to Gamefreak, it was because of Darkrai: Her introductory event in DPP was caused because of Darkrai; her role in PMD was to fight against Darkrai which by the way, RENDERED HER ABSOLUTELY USELESS; all the times Cresselia appeared in the anime was to be a damsel in distress for Darkrai (Darkrai got its own movie by the way, in which its counterpart DID. NOT. APPEAR); Heck, even in Legends Arceus she was guarding the… Dark Plate, while I don’t think you even need to acknowledge Cresselia for Darkrai’s event. Plus, the BST nerf means they aren’t even on equal footing anymore (not that she had a chance before, for being counterparts, there is a bigger advantage that what Kyogre held over Groudon, not to mention Darkrai got a unique ability and a move so good it had to be gutted to the ground, whereas Cresselia got the most generic ability and a reskinned Healing Wish)
So yeah, as far as I’m concerned, let her have this win, not like GameFreak gives a damn for Cresselia anyway, as much as it pains me.

Garganacl wouldn't be a problem if it's just pure rock, but since it can tera into different types, it can become an annoying mon.
Volcarona wouldn't be banned if it didn't get tera. It played fundamentally the same as it used to, just now it suddenly gains the option to become a different type to check what is supposed to check it. Same with Regieleki and Kingambit if it is banned.
Honestly, the whole idea of generational gimmicks feels like a hot mess that becomes gradually worse for me.

Yet on the other hand, Tera has brought us a whole new dimension to the game, without being broken in itself.
I've heard so many other people claming tera made a lot of Pokémon broken, but for what I've seen every single Pokémon that are broken because of tera were already complet joke of game designs without tera that encourage uncompetitive stratégies.
First of all no, Volcarona was never a fine Pokémon, it has always been terribly designed and tera just made it obvious. Volcarona since bw is "matchup fishing" the Pokémon, a Pokémon that relies not on skill but on wether or not there is a counter in the enemy team. For this reason using it never required any skill, you just click quiver dance and be broken.
Espatra was blaziken on steroid, blaziken has been banned for 3 générations for good reasons, tera again just pushed it outside of OU where it belongs.
Kingambit is a stupid comeback Pokémon that relies on coinflip, it's unbalanced, uncompetitive and awfully designed. If this thing gets banned, it deserves it.
Chi-yu and chien-pao are just overpowered pokemon with broken abilities, they are home in uber.
You can also argue that iron valiant and roaring moon are too strong because of it, but that's what you get from having basically legendary Pokémon with over 115 speed and 130 attack, those are some ridiculous stats, how is anyone surprised that these Pokémon cause some issues.
Rather than having a tunnel vision on tera, we should maybe start to realise than gen 9 OU has some pretty overpowered Pokémon that would have never been accepted in the tier before gen 8. The rest of the tier is fine with tera, sure the mecanics does come into play sometimes, thanks god it's not useless, but it still has some counterplay and won't win you whole games out of nowhere. Ban kingambit, and maybe roaring moon and the tier becomes instantly better

@@artimist0315 I agree with somethings like valiant, chi-yu, chien pao etc. But some I disagree with.
Volcarona is not a fine pokemon, it is indeed a match up check, however it would not been banned without tera. Azumarill is not a check to volcarona anymore because it can just tera grass or water and deal with it. Pokemon like heatran, skeledirge, clodsire, toxapex, etc. All these mons would check volc if it didn't have tera, but tera flips it and just lets volc run wild.
Same thing for Kingambit, imagine if great tusk was a reliable answer to kingambit, kingambit probably won't have to be banned.
Espathra could feasibly get a re-test in a tera-less and no shed tail metagame as that gives less opportunities for espathra to set up and win.
Are all these pokemon very broken without tera? Yes, but they likely wouldn't have been banned.

    • @artimist0315
      @artimist0315 9 месяцев назад +3

@@watery2211 I'm absolutly not saying these Pokémon would have been banned without tera, I'm saying I'm glad tera got them bad because they are unhealthy for the competitiveness of Pokémon. I'm actually certain that if it wasn't for tera, we would still have matchup fishing Volcarona and people arguing that 50/50 king is fair, but that wouldn't make them less toxic, restrictive and uncompetitve pokémon. Therefore I'm glad something like tera exists, to clearly show these things are not good for the game and should be banned.
As for would these things be "broken" without tera ? It really depends on what you call broken. If broken for you is something like mega-lucario that can 6-0 any team without any trouble or counterplay, then clearly no, these things would not have been broken. If broken is being banworthy, volcarona and kingambit are tecnically not broken. But if broken is being uncompetitive, unhealthy for the meta game and rewarding low-skill strategies and plays, then yeah, these two Pokémon are broken, with or without tera.

It’s a niche filled by tons of Pokémon throughout the generations and something cress has always wanted to do but been bad at. Tera has only opened up more options in this case and you contradicted yourself when you said “it will just turn into a generically good type” but also talk about how it’ll turn itself into a poison type (infamously not great) to counter clodsire.
