@@severinveganigang8036 I visited the north of Finland this summer on my motorcycle. Coming from the Lofoten Islands and Tromsø, it feels very flat and monotone, but I really liked the cities. I have to visit Helsinki and the south of Finland soon, perhaps as a part of a long motorcycle trip south through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland🤔
Nice comparison, even you had filmed the cities in different seasons. I've lived in Helsinki area bout 30 years and of course visited Osl. In general these two countries are surprisingly similar in many ways, and still very different in many ways.
What's interesting to me is that I visited Oslo in May of last year, and Helsinki in April of this year, so in theory, they were the same "seasons," but it does show just how much difference a month can make! I agree with the similarities. You can tell both countries are Nordic cousins, but they definitely have distinctive identities!
The reason for the lack of a medieval castle in Helsinki (Helsingfors) is that the city was moved from the Vanhakaupunki (Gammelstaden, until 1550 as Forsby and until 1639 as Helsinge) to Vironniemi (Estnäs) during the 17th century and mostly built in the 19th century, when it was made the new capital of Finland instead of Turku (Åbo). However, there is a fortress of Suomenlinna (Sveaborg) in front of Helsinki, representing the bastion fortification style of the 18th and 19th centuries.
I find all the talk about Nordic countries being so cold, even by people from Britain, but summer temperatures in Nordic countries in many places are higher than many areas in UK. For example July temperatures in Oslo is actually higher than a city like Birmingham. In the winter colder yes, specially in the east and in higher up areas and inland, but coastal areas are very similar to coastal areas in Britain also in the winter. Winters in UK are grey, windy and wet. I actually prefer it a bit colder, with some snow and not much wind and dryer in terms of humidity. As the wet and windy and humid UK in the winter is really not that nice at all. In Scandinavia it’s brighter and usually sunnier, specially for January to April times when you have a the combination of crisp snow with sunny days inland and higher up areas.
It's often said that weather In Finland is as grey as "Lonkero" 😄 Especially at October-November, and moment when writing this here in South-west Finland is Long-drink coloured day.
My favourite cities in europe/world. I love it. Clean, cold and cozy at the same time, remote, surrounded with the best nature, organized, etc. I am actually thinking about moving to Helsinki (norway is too expensive) sometime soon.
Haha, it was definitely a strange feeling leaving the blooming flowers and cherry blossoms in Washington, DC and arriving in a blizzard, but I'm not complaining! I love the snow
The main difference is that Oslo is hilly and mountainous, Helsinki is flat. The old architecture in Helsinki is mostly influenced by Russia and Sweden, Oslo is influenced by Germany and Denmark. Oslo urban area have higher density. You will most likely see more people in the streets, and a lot more immigrants. Helsinki have more sunshine, but the winters are colder.
It's funny how as a Finnish person, i have been to sweden many times, Estonia ofcourse, even denmark. But never into norway, why is this? I absolutely love and respect my nordic Brothers and Sisters in norway.
@@ranackerWell, Norway is really expensive but I’m going to visit the country anyway. Everyone says it’s really beautiful and just by looking at the pictures I know it is.
April, along with March, is typically one of the driest months in Finland, characterized by plenty of sunshine and only a few cloudy days on average, definitely being a spring month. However, as we observed, exceptions do occur. This highlights the importance of not drawing broad conclusions about the weather based on a single visit. Great video anyway and I very much liked your approach!
I love your videos where you bring in the senses! this is a brilliant idea an it let us use our own imagination... This is so much better than others that hate or love a city based on their own gut feeling. This way we can try to understand and also see that cities has different ambiences, sounds, smells and colors - and that we can love both on their own rights and for different reasons. I've seen a lot of your videos and hope you keep it up.
Thank you! I always try to be impartial and objective anyway when visiting new places, because as you said, there's so much to love about different cities worldwide, even if it's harder to notice immediately in some places.
nice video. I'm from finland but didn't know anything about Oslo, however it does seem very similar. This has made me more interested in learning about norway as a whole
I have visited Oslo twice. It’s a nice place but extremely expensive. Some people say it’s the biggest village in the world ! No offense… The Norwegians are nice and friendly and food in Norway is excellent. By the way… I live in Helsinki.
Oslo being a village is actually something they promote in their own travel ads («Oslo, is it even a city»), so no offense taken :) As a Norwegian I've travelled the other countries in Scandinavia many times, but never Finland. It's a shame! :(
@@InMyHead1996 Helsinki is very green in summer with full of green trees and beautiful flowers everywhere. Big parks and beautiful boulevards with trees. It also has a huge central park which is practically forest. Sandy and rocky beaches everywhere which are not built with houses and feels really like a wild nature are just minutes away from the downtown + 300 islands. Helsinki in summer is one of the most beautiful cities in I've been to. It is not really equal to compare wintery grey season to bright and colourful summer I think. Norway actually have more rain and less sunshine per year than Finland because the climate is different. I wish these both visit were made in summer. Winter and summer are totally two different worlds in Finland. As in Norway too. However, by no means Oslo isn't beautiful or that is less beautiful. I think both are great and beautiful cities!
As a Norwegian I have been to Finland once, to a mommiin troll theme park. A total nightmare, first of all its a tourist machine. Second, when u have 100 smal kids with blond hair running around u slowly lose your mind. But thats my experience, others may have a great time, its a beautiful country.
I love my Nordic cousins ❤ from Norway 🇳🇴
Me too 😊! ❤from Finland 🇫🇮

Such a fantastic region of the world!
Helsinki, my beautiful home city. I love this city over anything.

Gray indeed, but I love how cozy it makes things feel!

Thank you! I'm glad I could capture both cities pretty well. I love the both and will gladly return at some point

Helsinki 💓

I'm so glad i found this channel , such a fresh prospective on how to view a different city or country ... 10/10
I'm glad you found this channel too!
April in Helsinki is not springtime, he says, while walking in a beautiful spring blizzard?
Haha, it was definitely a strange feeling leaving the blooming flowers and cherry blossoms in Washington, DC and arriving in a blizzard, but I'm not complaining! I love the snow
@asenseoftravel I hate snow, but it is a feature of Finnish spring like the cherry blossom in Japan.
This is one of your best videos yet. The pacing is perfect, and your delivery is becoming more natural. I'm ready for another European adventure!
Thanks! Also, this one is my latest if you haven’t seen:

You've obviously never been to Kallio.
Notoriously there's more stairs there than anywhere else.

Come to Helsinki during the summer! It's like a whole different country in the summertime.
I can only imagine the city is incredibly full of life in the summer!

You don't get snowstorms in Oslo in April
Lonkero is a summertime drink. No one drinks it in winter 🤣 also there are no cedar trees in Finland
Well, I do 🤣
Lonkero is the best.

Hello from Finland. But what did you expect , some peaceful Moomin walley with serenity and relaxation? 🤣 Ive never been there and never will.
Maybe the Japanese Moomin park is for adults. 😂
"Oslo isn't really a big city", meanwhile me regarding cities like Tampere and Oulu quite impressive by their size here in Finland.
For the size of the country. I don’t really like big big cities. I love Chicago, though. It’s my favorite city.
Chicago is one of the best in America for sure. There, Boston, Montréal and San Francisco are some of my favorites on this side of the Atlantic!
