- Proper hand hygiene is the most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of germs and to protect yourself and others from illnesses. When not done carefully, germs on the fingertips, palms and thumbs, and between fingers, are often missed. This video demonstrates the World Health Organization (WHO) technique for hand-washing. Watch the video to be sure you are washing your hands thoroughly.

Noting my training as a surgical medic:
1. Remove all jewellery such as rings and bracelets. MOST IMPORTANT.
2. Close taps/faucets with elbows, not with hands / fingers.
3. Step 9: no need to use a towel, paper or other. These can still carry any type of infection. Just DRIP DRY with hands help upwards, higher than elbows.
Why I only wear jewelry sometimes
I wash the faucet tap instead of closing with elbow and then use a towel to close both the faucet tap and the doorknob, or I gently kick the door if noone is looking lmao
Every corp office is like yeah
When you rinse the soap off your hands how long does it take to get all of the soap off your hands?
@@trevorsheehan1757 It shouldn't take long.
Remember to turn the tap off with elbow. Save water
Anita Chaudhary who cares they’re paying for it
Or turn it off with your hands that have soap on them
you suppose to turn the water off with a new dry paper towel
What about the others
To avoid contamination, you should turn lff the water after washing your hands. Use paper towel when turning off the faucet.
Damn that running water is giving me a heart attack!!
Guauuuu is so funny i was thinking the same thing, 🤗🤗🤗🤗
I paid more attention to that than the hand washing
Staying safe😄
Aitihun M Sumer Agreed! We’ve been told all our lives to not leave the water running but now it’s ok?? They should tell people to just get your hands wet then turn off the water till you’re finished scrubbing.
@@ruthmaryrose Where I stay, we have acute water shortage. Luckily the rains bless us with enough water. If we leave the tap running that way, we won't even have enough water to drink!
Came to the comment section just to see if someone else was complaining about the running water. I'm glad it's not only me 👍

Same here
And me
woahhh. i just noticed it when i read your comment. that's sad and disappointing🙁
Actually I'm complaining that she didn't wash her hands properly. She should've washed up to the wrists and beyond the wrists a little bit plus rubbing back with soap at the back of her hands and under fingernails. In summary every inch of the hands should be washed properly taking a full minute. That's not proper hand washing to me
Everything is safe but the running water being wasted 😂😂
Exactly
I know! I was yelling at my screen. Must have been at least a gallon or two down the drain. And this is the "model"??
Yes, I'm worried about running water too! Could we do sth about that? 😱
@@tichervirtual - It depends on what type of tap you have.
If it is a handle, then I use my elbow to shut it off while I'm washing.
If it is a turnable knob, then you are really a bit out of luck. Unless you want to disinfect the tap and the surrounding area before every wash.
The best thing is having some sort of sensor, or button, that can be activated at will. That is the type of system used in hospitals and clinics. But, not all of us are able to install devices like that.
@@ShaiYammanee Thank you for your response. We have a turntable know so I thought we should proceed as you mention. Happy to know we're on the right path. Thanks again! 👍🏼
For those who're complaining about the running water, in performing medical handwashing, and not the surgical one ha, it's also important to adjust the flow of the water once you turn on the faucet. You can't turn on and turn it off from time to time as the germs may pass on from the switch and onto your hands and all of your procedures may go to waste.
What I was trying to say is that in medical field, it's normal to leave the faucet open when you're doing this if you have this type of sink. In nursing school, we have the foot pedal type, and that's what we're using when doing handwashing whether its medical or the surgical one.
I m agree with you joyce

An automatic faucet would have been better
Please do not be confused. This isn't the medical hand-washing used in healthcare environment but the hygienic hand-washing to be used at home, so it isn't as strict. Since this is hygienic hand-washing and not the medical/surgical one, having light accessories above the wrist may be overlooked. For those people who are concerned about the wasted water, let it be. Turning the tap on and off middle of hand-washing actually makes the whole thing useless. We are washing our hands, and turning the tap every now and then will just transfer bacteria right back to the same hands we're trying to clean. To minimize the water waste tho, make sure to adjust the water accordingly. When drying hands, please remember that WHO said 'single use towel', not a single single-use towel. Using a single towel to dry both hands isn't actually drying at all. Once the towel is wet, feel free to get a few more till your hands are completely dry. Make sure to use a dry towel in turning off the tap as well.
Kyou Hibari sure but a question that should be asked is in a developed country with enough healthcare, are the resources being used to dry your hands worth the germs being removed. Assuming that you are in a relatively safe area and not in the middle of a disease spread epidemic, I feel that just drying your hands on your clothes or a towel is sufficient, besides, your phone probably has more germs than your hands do when you don’t dry them properly. Just something to take into consideration
Totally agree.
I quick tip about drying. If you shake the excess water off your hands about 12 - 15 times before drying, you usually only need a single folded piece of paper towel. Folding it in half is important. It helps with the drying process.
Saves a lot in excess waste.
Kyou Hibari if I touch the tap after washing my hands I think I am taking the bacteria back with me again which I washed....,
@@andrewkim1667 In the age of covid, we don't have paper towels. Air dry is safest. 2. You kick the faucet off and on with your elbow, and use the last of your soapy wash to drip over the faucet handle.

Crazy, *tatiana,* ain't it, how we have made so much progress technologically etc., yet we're still primitives when it comes to basics like hand hygiene.

REMOVE BRACELET AND INCLUDE WRIST WASHING AT END PLEASE.
Yes omg.
derrick ang shut up
@derrick ang Yes this bothered me, too. Both the bracelet plus you should wash at least a few inches up past your wristbone.
And this is from WHO my god , it’s the first thing I spotted, she may as well not of washed her hands at all haaa
THANK YOU. THE BRACELET IS PROBABLY CONTAMINATED YOU SHOULD EVEN WASH YOUR ARMS
First you must remove the ornaments which you wore in your hand.
You could turn that tap off and back on with your arm/elbow to save water.
Then your elbow gonna be dirty 🤷🏽♂️
AR yeah but you don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your elbow so you’re not going to infect yourself 😉

Reading the comments regarding wasting of water: Agree, this method does use a fair bit of water, but one doesn't have to turn on the tap full blast. Watch people using public toilets and how they wash hands and this video is at least a move in the right direction. Teaching and reminding people to wash hands before handling food, before eating, after using the toilet, after handling animals (and this includes the family pet!), etc. is the best thing that comes out of the corona virus outbreak. We teach children how to wash hands, but many adults fail miserably. Handsanitizers are expensive and most people do not use as much as it is recommended.
Edit:
I also wish to add, that access to clean water is one of the major achievements in improving health and hygiene in developing countries. Water is indeed precious, but if one has access to running water, one ought to sensibly use it. We also have to respect certain authorities and when it comes to health, it is the WHO.
With this type of faucet, the water can easily be turned off and back on with an elbow.
@@marthaj5466 I agree. We had them installed in our house some time ago. Expensive tap ware that not everyone can afford. Washing hands in cold or warm water does not kill anything but will dislodge germs and make them less 'lethal'. Wonder whether this may be the reason the video is showing a running tap.
this is an very educational and interesting video for students.
I suggest you make another video washing wrists and no bracelet, also telling people to repeat each movement 10 times and rinsing hands from fingertips to wrists. Wouldn’t it be appropriate to close the tap while washing hands and then opening it with the paper towel and closing it also with the paper towel?
For some reason I get red irritated skin on my wrists if I wash them during hand washing, but not the other parts of the hand? I don't know why, but it does lightly burn.
What if there is only a air hand dryer? How do you turn off the water?
Use your elbow if it is day to day cleaning only (non medical). It is rare that you would be touching your own face with your elbow. Given the current situation, I would say, carrying clean paper towel with you is not a bad idea.
I keep watching this video until I memories thanks for sharing,I just add 3 step more,1 remove jewelry,2 clean all under nails using thumb nail or stick,3rubbing from wrist to arm and also to other ,korek me if im wrong,Im still a student of caregiver going to take module 2 on monday 16 may
Hi there, this was a great video thank you! I showed it to my Year 5 class and it was very insightful. But it was hard to watch how much water was being wasted! Please next time take more care and turn off the tap. I have had to reinforce to my students to not waste water just in case they get any ideas. Other than that, awesome vid. Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing. God bless ❤️
If she's a healthcare professional she shouldn't be wearing that bracelet during working hours!
What about the NAILS? The part which goes out of the fingers - just the bottom part?

Disappointed that the faucet did not have an aerator to reduce water usage. Also disappointed that this technique did not include washing the wrist as well. However, good that shows finger interlacing, washing back of nails, and washing finger tips against opposite palms. 7/10.

My name is Yoshikage Kira. I’m 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don’t smoke, but I occasionally drink. I’m in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning.
I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I’m trying to explain that I’m a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn’t lose to anyone.
Good grief! Please redo the video - some people may think you need to WASTE so much water to keep your hands clean!
What about that water you wasted?
Does it matter if you put soap on your hands first or water first before washing your hands?
Last step wash wrist....
Yep this is what I remember when I was in medical school...
Handwashing while singing happy birthday! ❤😊
If you don't have paper towels in your bathroom, or don't want to waste paper, do remember to wash the faucet handles with soap and water and then wash your hands again.
Automatic faucet is a must for public places
can i use this video with my company profile to promote hand washing
very good technique
I never leave the water running.
But maybe this is the right way to wash and damn the water hot. Also people didn’t care about washing hands last year when this was posted and now people are worried I started to be careful and wash my hands months ago. Stay safe everyone.
you dont have to let water running... just rub the faucet with the some soap too and pour water over it to rinse it.. its a pain for my eyes to see such wastage of water
Ask someone else to close the tap water. Water is precious or the elbows could be used to close the tap. This handwashing technique not being a medical/surgical handwashing technique is not strict about having ornaments removed, however its better to remove ornaments from hands while performing tasks which require cleansed hands
Why not turn off the water
METHOD IS THE BEST!!!!!!!😎
Thanks
Everyone is complaining about the water like turning the facet off and on (without the napkin) won’t introduce germs back onto the hands right after she scrubbed them. Then I guess you’d complain about using too many napkins if she used more than one. That’s the equivalent of mopping the floor with muddy shoes on. I’d take a high water bill over getting sick.
So you don't have to rub your hands the same way when you have them under water as when you apply the soap?
How hard should one scrub?
thank you for showing me how to wash hands so that i could not get COV
Step 1: Wet hands with water
Step 2: Apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces
Step 3: Rub hands palm to palm
Step 4: Right palm over left dorsum with interlaced fingers and vice versa;
Step 5: Palm to palm with fingers interlaced
Step 6: Back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked
Step 7: Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versa;
Step 8: Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa;
Step 9: Rinse hands with water
Step 10: Dry hands thoroughly with a single use of towel, tissue, or hand dryer
Step 11: Use towel to turn off faucet
Step 12: Your hands are now safe
NOBODY BRINGS UP GETTING UNDER THE NAILS OR KEEPING THEM TRIMMED AS LOW AS IS COMFORTABLE. This is not the time for manicures and long nails. Try getting out in the dirt in your garden and you'll see later just how much work it takes to get the dirt out of the creases and under your nails even with a great nail brush.
they mentioned at the end of the video that they strongly discourage that
Could use sensor tap,to save water.
Great video. Opening tap with unclean hand at the start and not cleaning tap handle at end is a problem surely?
I think you forgot to close the tap
i have hand hygiene practical tomorrow but i have eczema. Any tips for me? :( i'm so scared that it'd cause me pain
Thank you
please do turn off the faucet while and right after implementing the steps. wasteful
if you do this, your hand is still contaminated. Actually this technique usually practicable for operation theatre.
soap the faucet or use the elbow to turn it on and off. I believe it's now sensor controlled in the operation room. the core of the issue is the same efficacy w conservation in mind. thank u, no worries, I got ur point.
Stap is missing
lol my teacher watching this rn . i hope she sees this comment
Instructions unclear, I built a sink.
What is this Paper Tissue Called ? Which she used at the last of video ? I want to know it is name .. thx
Please turn off the tap while scrubbing...
All is excellent except that the jewelry shoud be taken off first
And we should know that water running is correct according to WHO provided that we turn the faucet slightly at first to make water drop at low rate to avoid wasting water) because i have read many comment complaining for wasting the water.
Good technique except that all the germs are now on the bracelet.
#Epicfail
Good procedure but, too much water wasted!!!
Regarding the running water simply turn off the tap once your hands are wet and before applying soap. When you turn the tap on again WITH A SOAPY HAND any virus on the tap handle should be eradicated as well as the soapy will break down the lipid layer surrounding the particles. It should then mean that a clean hand turns off a clean tap, or if in doubt use an elbow or a dry part of a paper towel.
You didn’t even include the wrists. Plus rotation rubbing is for all fingers and not just the thumbs.
Can you please adopt sustainability consciousness and save water?
I feel bad for the once who have /had this ..
Seeing myself without hives or hsv2 now I’m really grateful and excited thank you Dr Oseghale Sunday Herbal Home..
