    I was taught that the final brush strokes should be vertical because gallery lighting is always from above and the brush strokes would be less apparent if they are vertical.

    • @1977ajax
      @1977ajax Год назад +7

      Yes, me too. Final laying off strokes are best done gently, evenly and vertically. Would never pour varnish onto the surface either, but load the brush normally and work from top to bottom.
      Seems difficult to cover the canvas evenly if you pour it all in one spot, and difficult to judge the amount of varnish needed.
      Don't like the use of the cheap stubby brush either; varnish brushes tend to have very long hairs to allow a gentle spread, and though quite wide, are thin so that not too much material is applied for each brushful of varnish.
      This is a damned excellent channel for so many reasons, but have to disagree almost throughout on this one.
      Gamblin have a video on how to do it correctly.

      Can you put glossy varnish on top of matte???🙏Someone please help because I’ve already done a coat with matte varnish and I don’t like it.. it’s also a bit streaky so I’m hoping that the next coat will fix it if I buy a foam brush

  • @saucyjack8548
    @saucyjack8548 7 лет назад +107

    Something to consider... Perhaps try using a foam brush to do it. It eliminates brush strokes and hairs and gives a more even coat. In the event of having too much varnish, I find it will generally absorb excess and help with consistency and thickness.
    The only time I've found this too be less effective is over heavily textured oil paintings; even then, it's more a matter of a lighter touch and a little more patience.
    Thanks for the great video.

      I use sponge brushes, too, to apply varnish to my paintings and it helps have less lines and more even coats. Also, less bubbles, if, bubbles happen. I would never use a bristle brush to do varnishing with.

    As you can see, don't use a hogs hair brush. It creates too many stroke lines and leaves brush hairs in your work. I bought a nice $10 brush (Purdy XL 1") from the local ACE Hardware, for paintings that are 16" x 12" or so. You'll need some brush cleaner and warm soap and water for clean up. 'Cheap' throw-away brushes: Bad for the environment and a waste of money. And I never pour varnish directly onto the painting. Use a jar cover or a plastic dish depending on the size of the work.

    For those cheap "china bristol" brushes, its a good idea to pre-wash them using a fine stainless steel brush, combing out all the loose hairs. I buy them by the box, comb and wash them thoroughly going over the entire box before I ever use them. I am probably one of the only people that washes and re-uses them... They have lots of uses in my studio, they get better once they have been used several times, after the loose hairs are gone.

    I love paintings that have a gloss finish to them. Thank you for the demo. I have seen many great paintings in local galleries that, in my opinion, were ruined when varnish was applied- major brush strokes left in the varnish, hairs varnished over and left embedded, areas not varnished to the same degree as the rest of the painting. Again, thank you.

    • @mercurythunder3927

      I tend to do the overall first coat and then go over it with another going in one direction across and then using the same varnish coat, going up and down to take out excess varnish until I am satisfied with how it looks. If, u do it with many coats, u tend to drag the coats before it, if, they are still drying or sticky. So one good coat and do what I told u, works well for me.

    Thanks for this video! I do have one question, though--when you say you work in sections for very large paintings, do you mean you let it dry before you move on to the next section? I recently had an unfortunate experience while glazing (with Galkyd)--it was a very large painting, and the glaze didn't dry evenly. :(
    On a side note, I have found that sponge brushes work really well for varnishing since they don't lose hairs.

      If you’re working in oils, the paint can take a considerable amount of time to dry depending on how many layers you’ve painted and how thick some pieces of the painting are. Also, depending on what kind of paint you use. As the layers dry underneath new paint that’s been applied if the topmost layer is dry and the underneath is still hardening, it can expand or shrink causing your painting to crack. For the most part that is why most artists say wait a few months since your last passage of paint before you varnish. This hopefully insures the paint and varnish will not crack.

    Pouring the varnish directly onto the canvas is TERRIBLE advice. It can saturate just enough in that one spot before you spread it all (no matter how fast you work) to make the entire job a mess. ALWAYS DIP YOUR BRUSH INTO THE VARNISH that you've gently poured into a separate bowl.
