Another tip you should try is taking your multivitamin around midnight. And that kind of helps give me a boost of energy to go until 7am without a crash feeling. I just started doing this after 14 years in nights and it helps !
I have been a night shift nurse for 5 years and these tips are exactly the routine I have been doing this past 5 years and it makes night shift work for me just fine. I on occasion use Melatonin or Benadryl to sleep, but for the most part I don't need help sleeping after a shift. And a good majority of the nurses I work with take naps on their lunches. Most of us tend to just bring snacks instead of a full blown lunch. So that way we can take our lunch to get a half hour nap.
Girl, you got this. I'm a tech as well. Please drink water Wear your compression socks And get help when working with total patients. (Never move total patients by yourself, protect your back) Get in the swing of staying up late. Prepare your vital sign cart so you dont run out of stuff. When you get new patients, prepare your patient's room... get your telebox if they need one. Remember the downtime from 1 to 4... it can get boring stay moving so you don't get sleepy.
Oh yes ... whatever you do (sounds good in theory, but not practice) stay on top of charting. If you have your achs (blood sugars) get them and your vital signs at the same time. (When it's time) Make sure your patients use the bathroom before if they are a daily weight. Don't let patients bully you especially if they are on a fluid restriction...
I never got used to nights, it made me so sick physically and mentally. I give you props for keeping to your schedule and having a balance. I never could get anything done. I worked 5- 8 hour shifts and it was terrible. One day off was a total waste.
I can’t do nothing but nights now that I’m used to it!! I’m a CNA working on my BSN and even when I become a nurse I’m sticking to nights, we’re just a different breed of people 🤷🏽♀️

My mom was an RN nurse and was trying to keep working even at 73 years old but when they started going to all 12 hour shifts she had to retire, it's just too hard for someone in their 70's to work at that pace...
I used to LOVE working nights! Then I went to days and LOVE days in all aspects. I tried going back to nights briefly a few years ago but it didn't end well. When I was nights I would flip schedule all the time and to prepare I would stay up as late as I could the night before. I then could sleep late in to the next day and be ready to go the next night to work. Enjoy your content!
I'm literally sitting here trying to soak in as much tips as possible lol. I feel like I haven't stayed up overnight for years. I just graduated nursing school & due to having a child and working around my fiancé work schedule, I got to pick up night shifts and I can tell this is gonna be a tough transition lmao.
It sounds so hectic I personally wouldn’t be able to do it. But I truly appreciate people like you who enjoy it and are so passionate about working long shifts. RESPECT.🙌
Absolutely! You nailed it! I was on a break for school so I told the scheduler they could schedule me however for a month. I was working nocs, mornings, pm. And all the shifts were 17 hours(doubles). Thank GOD my schedule goes back to just weekends in July! Nocs are tough. The recovery time tends to take up a lot of the next day.
I’ve been working night shifts for years and I always find myself so tired all the time even when I get 8 plus hours of sleep during the day. I also switch my sleep schedule back to sleeping at night time on my days off and sometimes find it hard to fall and stay asleep. I find melatonin works for helping me sleep. Thanks for the tips sis! 💗
I thought i was the only one😭 I've been working graveyard for 6+years now, and my sleep is pretty broken up. BUT on the Days i do sleep good, i still wake up so tired! Even on off nights I'm always SO tired!

Perfect timing! I’m starting a new job as a tech and I’m working third shifts. This is my first time ever working third shift and my first night was rough lol thank you for the tips!
I will be starting my first nursing job, as a mother/baby nurse, in August anddddd it’s night shift. I am a morning person and go to bed at 10 right now. I am so nervous. This video really helped me get an idea of how to live my life. Ugh so nervous still...
Hey Brittany, any update on how you are adjusting? I am the same way... wake up at 445am and sleep at 10pm. I start Night shift in June so just doing some research to prep. If you don't mind, can you also share what works for you?
@@Nancyalytzel hi!!! Well....I started night shift in January and I actually impressed myself. It’s easier than I thought. I was very anxious and it turns out it’s “easy” to do. You’re up no matter what because of the adrenaline and coworkers. It’s so quiet, no managers, more time to really focus and make your plan. I am able to sleep after my shift from like 9-5Pm If I am off the next night, its imperative I wake up at 4 then sleep again around midnight to make sure I get sleep all night because if not, I found myself waking up around 3 am! But everyone is different in this department. All in all, I was able to adjust pretty well. And on my days off I am able to wake up early still and have my life!!
Thank you for posting!!! I was running out of your videos to watch. 😂 Thank you for being an inspiration to me, I’m still a junior in high school and you keep me excited to do better in school. Love you!! 💕
As a nurse, I do take melatonin… I do get nightmares and vivid dreams and I actually feel more tired because I don’t get rest while sleeping because of the nightmares and wake up even more tired. Magnesium powder, I’ve heard of, I will definitely try this out. Taking power naps during breaks helps me when I’m just absolutely tired coming into the shift. Like she said, it’s your time, take that nap! I try to talk to my bf who lives across the globe from me so I try to get some time in with him but then I will let him know if I really need a nap and will talk to him later.
Very good tips!!! I have been a nurse on nights for a little over a year now and I agree with what you shared!!! What has also worked for me is this pillow mist spray that I ordered online from Ancient Cosmetics!!! It has helped me to fall asleep faster and if I wake up too soon I spray it again and I’m usually able to fall back asleep! A coworker also makes a mix of oils that she calls liquid ambien and I have used that as well by rubbing it on the inside of my wrists. Sometimes as of lately I have been waking up at 3 am when I’m off. I think because my shifts were sporadic throughout the week too. 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ I’m going to start stretching again more before bed. I have also had to take Advil PM if I have a headache which I don’t take all the time, just as needed and it has knocked me and the headache right on out 😂😂
I just got hired at the hospital as a PCT and I’m on night shift! I’m taking training classes which are in the daytime. I’m so excited for nightshift thanks for this great video!!

And whatever bread I make during my “clinicals” 400+ hours I will put towards my next tuition fee, which I believe is $23,000. I want to eventually post videos about my journey, because I haven’t seen anyone successfully pull this off. What do you think? Thank you! ❤

I am nervous about nights, I have a job offer pending and have to decide today, but it is nights and I dread working nights. Thank you for your video!!
I've been working as a tele nurse for 2 months now. You will be book smart, but not in patient care smart. Charting and documenting always takes all of my hours and always late lol-.- but i've been better compared when I was orienting. Always assess your patient! dont just copies someone else documentation.
3AM was the killer for me. A daytime person I never could adjust to nights. I'd want to fall asleep in the middle of the night and then would become totally awake and ready for the new day in the morning. After a week of that I took an ambien and was out for 12 hours.
Hi alexis, love this video very helpful. I was just curious in the future do you see yourself ever transitioning to day shift or is night shift is where you will stay. Thank you for sharing your advice and being a big inspiration about being a nurse. it keeps me going and continuing my school to be a nurse as well. Have a bless day and keep shining.
Not a nurse but a med tech, just recently started rotating my turn on 3rd shift and completely agree with the schedule thing! I feed my cats in the morning when I first get home (7:30 ish) and try to sleep until 3 or 4. Haven’t tried magnesium yet but that’s on my list! The melatonin drops work the best but I always forget to take them-doing the morning run on a 250 bed hospital plus the ED and running 3 departments really sucks the energy out of you lol
This was so helpful! I’m a new grad nurse and I’m starting on nights this weekend! I’m excited and nervous bc I’m really not a nocturnal person😬 but definitely going to try all these tips! Wish me luck💕
I graduated nursing school last week & I will be starting night shift full time in August. I am terrified of what it is going to do to my mental health as I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder 2 years ago.
I just graduated from nursing school and I got my dream job working as a NICU nurse on a level IV NICU unit at a children's hospital. The job is for night shift and I've been kinda nervous about starting on nights, I'll have to try your method!
If you plan on staying a long time I wouldn't worry about it because you will eventually get enough seniority to go to days and stay there. I would be less inclined to do it if you were only planning on staying. a year and then going elsewhere.
That schedule sounds a little risky when it comes to the four hour nap thing the night before work and sleeping until 2 on off things ( that sounds less risky though). Im more keen to just sticking with the night schedule even on my days off, but maybe I'll try your schedule at some point when I'm more comfortable in my new ER job.
Can you tell me if you ever did try staying on night shift? I’m older and starting night shift in pediatrics. I thought about trying to maybe stay up half the night on the off nights and sleep later but not really late (instead of totally flipping). I am a little afraid of what flipping back and forth will do to my health 🤗
Do you think night shift can contribute to depression at all? I love my job and my coworkers but since I've started working nights I feel a total shift in my mood and energy levels. I've only been on nights for a month though, so like you said maybe I just need to give it time.
It definitely can in some people. it happened to me. Try taking D3 and B12, I feel like that help me some. Also on your days off try to have an actual time outside or doing things you normally would.
My unit requires us to work 50% days and 50% nights. Sometimes we work 2 weeks nights and then 2 week days. But it can also be us switching weekly it just depends on the scheduling and where nurses are needed which is extremely draining! I worked 3/3 nights last week and I literally was super tired and slept my whole day off. I felt bad because I didn’t get anything I needed to get done. So it’s super annoying to keep flip flopping and not staying on a consistent schedule. In my case my schedule is very inconsistent so it’s hard to adjust to a routine like yours.
I had this situation too and left the job for that reason. How they expect poeple to do that and live a normal life is beyond me, my manager literally would put you on a day shift then a night then a day or two days and then a night or two nights and then day, it was ridiculous!! I would rather do all nights and then move to days when a position becomes available.
Any recommendations for me? I just got into a prenursing class. The class days are 8-3, tues, weds, Friday. And currently I work NOC shift Friday sat Sunday as a cna. I’m not sure if I should keep this work schedule or switch it up.
What area in Pediatrics do you work? I am graduating in 6 weeks and I am actually attending Children's Hospital of PGH Job Fair that is being held at my school which is a Hospital in Pittsburgh. I am interested in Ped's Onc and NICU. Any suggestions or tips for choosing between those two and the interview process?

My hospital has a DD that’s open 24/7 and unfortunately all the new donuts and stuff come in at like 3 am right when I’m ready for my mid shift coffee. The struggle 😅
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. - John 3:16 God loves us and He has a plan for our lives. He knows everything about us, all our struggles and hurt. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” - Jeremiah 1:5 You are NOT seeing this message by accident. God loves you and wants you to be a part of His kingdom. “Therefore repent and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,” - Acts 3:19 If you would like to get saved, please pray this prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for awakening me to realize that I need you in my life. Father, I believe that you sent Jesus Christ to earth to preach your word, be an example for us, die on the cross and rise again on the third day so that people and I may be forgiven of our sins and have it payed for us by Jesus blood. So that we may enter Heaven and not perish. Thank you for allowing me to understand this. Thank you for loving me. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I repent of my sins and turn away from them. I forgive those that have done me wrong. I pray that you come into my life and take control of every single thing. I put my life in your hands and I trust your process. I ask you to please save me and write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I love you and pray that you allow me to have a stronger relationship with You. I pray you give me a spirit of faith, patience, forgiveness, happiness, and self control. I believe and receive everything that I have prayed in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen I believe that you are saved and God loves you. The angels of the Lord are rejoicing that you are saved and have repented of your sins. See my other comment on what to do next. God bless and God loves you and I love you too❤️. Welcome to the Family of God!❤️ The devil will try to tempt you and get you to not trust God because if the devil knows that God can do everything but he doesn’t want you to know that. Regardless, stay strong and believe you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.If you have any questions feel free to ask.😊 Luke 15:10 "In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." Repent of your sins, ask Jesus to come into your life, turn from your sins, trust God and put him first, pray, worship, and believe Jesus died on the Cross for your sins and that He rose on the third day to pay the price for you so that you can live in Eternal Heaven and not perish. I also suggest that you download the Bible Youversion app the brown bible app. They have devotions that you can read everyday on pretty much any topic. I find these helpful as they bring me closer to God and have a lot of amazing lessons that you can learn from. God bless your journey!❤️

This was so helpful! I’m a new grad nurse and I’m starting on nights this weekend! I’m excited and nervous bc I’m really not a nocturnal person😬 but definitely going to try all these tips! Wish me luck💕
How’s it going? I got my first night shift today.
If your a NICU nurse it’s only during night shift?
If you plan on staying a long time I wouldn't worry about it because you will eventually get enough seniority to go to days and stay there. I would be less inclined to do it if you were only planning on staying. a year and then going elsewhere.
Take your time. We still love you 😘
That schedule sounds a little risky when it comes to the four hour nap thing the night before work and sleeping until 2 on off things ( that sounds less risky though). Im more keen to just sticking with the night schedule even on my days off, but maybe I'll try your schedule at some point when I'm more comfortable in my new ER job.
That sounds so good and healthy! I think I’ll try it!🤗
Same here just got hired as a ICU tech for nights
super excited 🙏😊
@Robin Ingraham it was a great experience i prefer nights it less management and patient’s family and honestly it depends on the team for the night
@Robin Ingraham you will do great 👍🏽
Today I'm starting with my first nightshift ever .. 7 in a row! God help me
@Robin Ingraham Well, actually pretty good. I'm still working 7 on 7 off and i'm still alive :D
I'm a tech and all I drink is BANGS even tho they are bad...lol maybe I should try some tea. Thanks for recommending the oats 😁♥️
Loving your channel. Question not medical related but just wanted to know the song/beat that you have for your intro?
Its, A boogie- timeless
Your hair color is nice right now....I work days but, I agree with you about keeping a routine....days or nights....
Great video as always and really great tips
Do you think night shift can contribute to depression at all? I love my job and my coworkers but since I've started working nights I feel a total shift in my mood and energy levels. I've only been on nights for a month though, so like you said maybe I just need to give it time.
It definitely can in some people. it happened to me. Try taking D3 and B12, I feel like that help me some. Also on your days off try to have an actual time outside or doing things you normally would.
Since I started night shift, my energy level is always down. I used to exercise alot but nowadays, I dont even have energy to move.
Yes, absolutely. You have to stay on top of you Vit D and B levels.
i love the fact that your dog is named Biscuit
I'm 11pm ton7am that ttu night shift seein the sun rise as the night steals my energy ahhhhhhhh have a gud day lol
Any recommendations for me? I just got into a prenursing class. The class days are 8-3, tues, weds, Friday. And currently I work NOC shift Friday sat Sunday as a cna. I’m not sure if I should keep this work schedule or switch it up.
Good advice ❤❤❤
What area in Pediatrics do you work? I am graduating in 6 weeks and I am actually attending Children's Hospital of PGH Job Fair that is being held at my school which is a Hospital in Pittsburgh. I am interested in Ped's Onc and NICU. Any suggestions or tips for choosing between those two and the interview process?
I started nights again good info
I love you
And your videos
I love ur style and intro music
Please 😫🙏🙏💓tell me the sound track name
Even I'm a nurse
Night is pain
Love the way u work 💼
I tried the Oats Overnight shake once and it was gross as fuck LOL
What is the night shift like
It’s freaking exhausting
My hospital has a DD that’s open 24/7 and unfortunately all the new donuts and stuff come in at like 3 am right when I’m ready for my mid shift coffee. The struggle 😅
What do you do with your dog while you're at work?
Animals usually stay home. Mine does. Fine while I'm at work
Let me take you out to the museum beloved
Night shift is soooo tough😫
Can you please answer my DM’s I need your advice ASAP . @keepinupwithlay
“Therefore repent and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,” - Acts 3:19
If you would like to get saved, please pray this prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for awakening me to realize that I need you in my life. I believe and receive everything that I have prayed in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen
I believe that you are saved and God loves you. Regardless, stay strong and believe you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.If you have any questions feel free to ask.😊
Luke 15:10
"In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
Repent of your sins, ask Jesus to come into your life, turn from your sins, trust God and put him first, pray, worship, and believe Jesus died on the Cross for your sins and that He rose on the third day to pay the price for you so that you can live in Eternal Heaven and not perish. I also suggest that you download the Bible Youversion app the brown bible app. They have devotions that you can read everyday on pretty much any topic. I find these helpful as they bring me closer to God and have a lot of amazing lessons that you can learn from. God bless your journey!❤️
