    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Barn owl chicks
As this episode begins, the eldest barn owl chicks, Ginger, is six weeks old, just over a week older than youngest, Clove.
    Developing fast
The chicks practice flapping their wings and as they do so some of the fluffy white down that covers their bodies begins to fly off like dust and you can see their darker plumage emerging.
    Inquisitive chicks
The chick's grown curious about the world outside and begin to spend much of their time looking out of the entrance to their nest.
    Willow & Ghost
These chicks are the first brood by barn owl pair Willow & Ghost and they haven't had an easy start. Dad, Ghost, has been a poor provider and it has been up to me to drop food parcels into the nest.
    Bird ringing
in order to ensure we can trace these owls, Jean Thorpe, who runs a local wildlife rescue centre and is licenced to ring owls, arrives to place an identification ring on their legs. This doesn't harm them in any way and means they can be traced in the future. As we handle them we notice spots, or sparkles, on their breast feathers - confirmation that all three are female.
    Barn owls weighed & measured
I weigh them at the same time. Clove, the smallest, is a healthy 330g. And Ginger's wing, from from the elbow joint to the end of the longest flight feather, measures 222mm. But the waxy sheath, from which the feather grows, is still visible, showing that her wings have more to grow.
    Owlets fledge
By eight weeks, Ginger has lost most of her downy fluff and is ready to leave the nest, but on her first attempt slips and falls. Thankfully all is well and she is soon taking short flights. Barn owls don't leave the nest as soon as they've learned to fly and Ginger joins her mum Willow on the feeding post and now spends time with her siblings inside the nest, coming and going as she pleases. Her flying skills still need to be perfected - as do the landing skills of her siblings.
    Late brood
This brood hatched so late in the year, and with an absent dad, I was worried about them. So it is amazing to watch all three chicks fledge successfully.
    Next time
In the next film I'll follow the chicks' story as they get used to life beyond the nest… and reveal how barn owl pair Willow & Ghost start thinking about their next clutch, even though it’s winter!

I'm surprised at how calm the chicks were at being grabbed and ringed, not a single one of them did that defensive beak clapping sound. but it did sound like one them did a hiss.

@@RobertEFuller Of course. Well deserved words. I’d have to say the live cam of the owls feeding is my personal favorite. I found that amazing how the Mom adjusted the portions she’d share to each and I’d rewind the live webcam to them feeding her young and watched them grow up nightly. Astonishing just how fast they grow in a couple of weeks. Friendly suggestion: perhaps a couple video segments of just that. Aka the Mother feeding newly hatched compilations as they grow. I think those uploads would get plenty views IMO.

That was so heartwarming, I love how they look like disheveled, worried old men at the start & then they're gorgeous, it's hilarious 🤣.
I love the fact that you'll give them extra nourishment to help them along. It breaks my heart when I see these wildlife videos where the animal (usually a predator) is starving yet the reason these animals, of which many are endangered, are suffering is because of humans actions. Yet they do nothing, just watch.
Thank you so much for giving these precious beings a head start.

I also missed when the the three girls were so calm when Robert cleaned the nest, as they were asking for it and colaborating.

I am amazed by the difference in size a couple of days make in the size of these owls.

It’s helps to handle them properly and some birds put up a fight when handled and others don’t hoping they get left alone

I'm so shocked the chicks don't try to peck you or make noise calling for their mom. They must be so used to humans.

No these are wild owls - it is their natural defence mechanism - to keep very still and quiet and hope that the dangers passes quickly.
