no, its not admirable and not a thing you should be proud of. its unprofessional and inadequate. these are grown up persons, you do not bad mouth a person behind her back. especially not in public.
@@juu2356 We must have been watching a different video. They didn't bring up the topic. They were very diplomatic in their response and didn't go into much detail as to what Mulgrew actually said. It's well known that Mulgrew wasn't happy when Paramount rather unceremoniously got rid of Jennifer Lein, who Mulgrew really liked. Add to that how the show seemed to solely focus on Seven, as Jeri Ryan pointed out, for quite some time. Jeri Ryan seems to be saying that the network and powers that be caused a lot of the issue by only promoting her. Afterall, on any Star Trek show, the captain is the lead and the rest is the ensemble.
@juu2356 You’re right. They did lots of panels with Mulgrew and didn’t say any of this with her present. On the other hand, with those Mulgrew panels, they did talk that smack about others, from producers to the original casting choice for Captain Janeway! So, looks like they’re just people, after all.
Garret Wang was constantly being denied requests to let his character grow and develop over the course of the show, or even advance in rank beyond Lieutenant. He also wanted to direct at least one episode, but that too was denied. To give you an idea of how insulting that is, it is common for actors, when contractually locked into a show for as many years as Voyager was on the air, to be given the opportunity to direct so that they come out of it with more than just an acting credit on their resume. The Director's Guild actually requires prior experience, so this is often the easiest way for an actor to break in to directing as a career move. LeVar Burton and Jonathan Frakes both directed multiple episodes of Star Trek TNG. But Wang had all his requests denied despite the show having the same number of seasons. There was a lot of bullshit going on behind the scenes over at Voyager.
@Jonsin 1459 - I think it's less that Harry couldn't carry an episode and more that the showrunners didn't quite know what to do with him (or at the very least, were prevented from exploring his character in a way that would give him the opportunity to carry an episode). A lot of that may be due to the fact that Rick Bermen was constantly shooting down attempts by the writers to introduce consequences to the overall story. It's really hard to develop a weak character and make them stronger over time if a reset button is hit at the end of each episode. I look at what DS9 ended up doing, long-term, with similarly bland characters like Bashir and Jake, and I can't help but think that the reason Harry never had his moment in the sun is a lack of imagination.
I sort of wonder if that is why he got emotional in this video. At least for him, since the show itself was shitty to him, with not much help for his future career, all that was nice left in the show is the good memories he had of the show with his co workers, but to see even that fall apart to some somewhat trivial strife is heart breaking.
Even as he received more spotlight (he was actually the one chosen to leave the show, but they canceled that decision when he was featured on the 100 most attractive man alive list of people magazine), his character just wasn’t written strong enough most of the time. There were 3-4 episodes featuring him as the (co-)leading character, which proved that he is a talented actor tho.
The last years of Voyager were really a difficult period for Mulgrew: her dad died of an invasive tumour, she met the daughter she had given up for adoption for the first time, her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease... I mean, it doesn't excuse her behaviour, but with all this going on I can understand why she must have felt even worse when she wasn't seen as the selling point of the show anymore. Anyway, Janeway was a great role model for me as a child and now I am a doctor because of her passion for sciences!
If that doresn'texcuse her behaviour, why do you mention it? besides she always comes across as the worst kind of woman to me, so Idon't think that hadanything to do at all. She must be like that all the time.
@@haczabim it doesn't excuse her behaviour, but it could have precipitated it/ could have been a contributing factor. Humans aren't Vulcans: we aren't always rational and difficult emotional situations plus exhaustion can really change the way somebody interacts with the people around them (like what happens in so-called "burn out" situations). I think it's fair to say that that kind of behaviour is not how Mulgrew always approaches co-stars and the fact she apologised to Ryan (I think it happened at ST-LV at the 20th anniversary of Voyager) is an indication that she has understood her behaviour was wrong and she was possibly in a worse mindset when she was filming Voyager than she is now.
If you look at the other "get togethers" of the cast with Kate Mugrew, you can see at their body language that they "avoid her like the plague"........ I think she is not a nice person for the average men/women to be with.
@El Matadores You _must_ surround the leading stars with as many wet lettuces as possible - it really makes them *_pop!_* _Also, wtf is wrong with a "wet lettuce"?!?_
I met Garrett Wang at a Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas a few years ago and what you said about him is completely right. He was polite, approachable, and unpretentious.
In one of his episodes of The Delta Flyers podcast he says he told one of the producers to stop giving one of the directors a hard time because it made it uncomfortable on set for him and everyone else. So yes he's incredibly nice but will also stand up for himself and others when needed and that makes my heart happy.
It’s from my understanding that Mulgrew was very proud of being the main star as a female character who was not sexualised and she wanted to feel as though she could withold that through to the very end alone. So for them to realise the show needed spicing up a bit and to watch a very attractive Jeri come into the show, be placed in a revealing costume and for her to be sexualised really hit a nerve with her. She did not like the idea at all. So, initially she took a disliking to the character not Jeri herself. Then of course the rating were rising and posters of Jeri were everywhere since she become more mainstream and pretty much become the most popular on the show. It pretty much had made Kate‘s character irrelevant, which hurt her a lot. So, it’s understandable that tension would arise. There was one point she even requested that Jeri should not be able to go to the bathroom during the show. Kate admitted she didn’t handle it well and had apologised. Kate said this: “Let’s be very straight about something,” said Kate matter of factly “This is on me, not Jeri. She came in and did what she was asked to do. No question about that, and she did it very well. It’s on me, because I’d hoped against hope that Janeway would be sufficient. That we didn’t have to bring a beautiful, sexy girl in. That somehow the power of my command, the vicissitudes of my talent would be sufficient unto the day, because this would really change television, right? That’s what dug me the hardest, that to pick up the numbers they did that… That was my interpretation of it. And that hurt me. I found it sort of insulting. And, of course, she embodied the part, this beautiful girl. But we certainly were utterly professional. I had been nothing short of completely professional, and she did her job. Very well! It was a very good idea that she was half Borg, but it’s on me. I’m sorry it has to be part of this legacy, and I probably should have comported myself better. I should have been more philosophical about it, but in the moment it was difficult.”
7 of 9 being nerd bait has not aged well IMO, not to the extent they did it. If I could rewrite history everything would be the same except she wore normal clothes, she would still be nerd bait but it wouldn't be as insulting all around. They literally did 7 of 9 pinup shoots and put the posters in stuff. I have a 7 of 9 pinup poster that I think came with a video game or something.
I agree, CBS/Paramount did the same thing with Voyager as was done with Charlies Angels back in the 70's, Boobs & Butt to sell to the younger guys who were stuck on Starwars and forgot about Trek. Like Stewart says when asked about Voyager, "That Catsuit" that says it all.
I feel like Roxann Dawson never got enough credit for her work on Voyager. After Jeri came on, we all seemed to forget that there was more than just one kickass woman on the show to begin with.
February 8, 2021 - That is true Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres) never got enough credit for her work on Voyager. Unfortunately we ALL know how the game is played, bring in the hot sexy blonde in a tight bodysuit to save the show. Roxanne understood this but Kate did not, that is why Kate bullied Jeri so badly... I love Jeri. Even though Kate recently apologized to Jeri for how she treated her on Voyager years ago, I no longer like Kate as I once did.
@@GA-wq8xq - February 12, 2021 - Yes, Jeri Ryan was brought on the show to increase the ratings with her sex appeal, no one is denying that. What you fail to realize is Jeri is a wonderful actress in her own right. You act like just because a woman is beautiful and or sexy she can not act.. Kate Mulgrew is a good actress but my view of her has changed since it has come out that she bullied Jeri Ryan on set, so much so that Jeri would have stress related stomach aches before she would have scenes with Kate. The bullying only stopped when Jeri started dating the producer of #StarTrekVoyager Brannon Braga. There is NEVER any room on this planet for bullying, I don't care how great an actress someone is, she/he can STILL be a hateful person in real life. So MOST of us DON"T care how "great an actress she is". What makes it worse, Kate admitted only a few years ago that SHE was the problem on set. Kate was jealous of Jeri and she was going through a lot of family issues with her children at home and took it out on Jeri . Kate only officially apologized to Jeri in 2020
@@winterhug4331 she apologized at least three years ago because in this video Wang said Kate apologized. Also you make some good point, but under minded when Jerry dates the producer, how fortunate
@@GA-wq8xq -February 12, 2021 - Yes Kate apologized a few years ago through Garrett to Jeri and NOT to Jeri officially. - Stop defending Kate. Anyone in their right mind would look for someone to help stop someone from bullying them - That is why Garrett was crying on the panel because he knew NO one on set was defending Jeri against Kate. - Since I have to explain this to you, you sound like you are a bully that does not know that it is wrong, which is a shame... I am out
Thank you for uploading this. I'm currently subscribed to the Delta Flyers podcast and loving it so very much. Garrett seems like a class act who's told another story like this which he was pleading to higher ups for unity on set. A great man whom may have been an Ensign on Star Trek Voyager, but to me he is a Captain through and through with that mentality.
I was honestly baffled when I start reading about how much tension there was between the cast members of Voyager because the actors did a fantastic job in playing their characters.
Kind of like the Next Generation and all the issues that especially plagued the first two years. Some of that tension maybe helped certain parts of it ironically.
Jeri Ryan and Garrett Wang are such gracious, kind people. I was really touched by Garrett’s emotional response when talking about the difficulties experienced on set.
I love these guys. Jeri was phenomenal as Seven, despite everyone going on about her physical attributes - her acting and character is what made Voyager better
THIS, I'd love to be So lucky to be friends with the lot, bit angry with kate atm but that too shall pass..she seems too willing to be a little narcissistic for my blood, but hey watching startrek con out of CO I think, she was joking, laughing hard with most of them, nearly all so that was niceto see, but this might stick with me awhile as I try to get out of my head the nastiness it seems Kate put them throgh..we don't know ALL of it, but enough to wish Jeri, Garret the best as they seem the hardest hit by that mess..
Say what you want, but later they gave her liniency in terms of clothing (good!) and her role and character was one of most intelligently written, acted and finaly, most in-your-face-mirror, like permament Eddington from DS9.
I thought she was fantastic. It’s too bad the writers and producers couldn’t be bothered to do anything truly thoughtful with her character or the entire concept of the series. Voyager was insulting garbage. If you like the show, well, I’m glad for you and don’t want to take that from you. I have a very different opinion on it. Yes I sat through every single episode to give it a fair chance.
I felt genuinely bad at Garrett being snubbed, publicity-wise. Gotta say, to this day, "Timeless" was and still is one of my favorite VOY eps, largely due to Garrett's portrayal in his present/future selves, and the feeling that went into it. And Jeri knocked it out of the park in "Infinite Regress". Still blows me away every time I watch her seamlessly transition to each "personality", especially so rapidfire near the end. Whoa!
SULU had the same “steer the ship” role as Harry Kim but the TOS writers found a way to enrich & develop his character. The VOY writers were just not trying .
@@electrictroy2010 Little as it was, Harry Kim had way more development than Sulu, at least on the series. Maybe we see him, Uhura, and Chekov today as icons because TOS dealt more with traits, not backstories and character-driven episodes.
This guy is a hot mess, how are you going to cry over some crap, that happened almost 20 years ago, that really didn't concern him. Jeri & Kate aren't crying. Kim needs to MAN-UP!!! Stop being Effeminate.
Will Vanderbilt, you're right. And I know RUclips has a reputation for immature trolls in the comments, but wow. I sincerely hope that you others move on with your lives, do a lot of growing up, and eventually look back on what you said here with an embarrassed shudder.
Wish they gave him more to do, so he could develop his character. You know from wet behind the ears to an experienced officer. Or at least the beginnings of one.
I thought the Doctor had the best lines in the whole series. Basically a holographic McCoy with his frequent quips, "I'm a doctor, not a..." I also liked the relationship between Seven and Naomi Wildman. Actually, I also enjoyed the tension between Janeway and Seven, particularly when Seven would question the Captain's judgment. Perhaps that was in part in spite of, or because of, their tensions off the set. (I'm binging on my Voyager DVDs this week.)
Except I already got that from Spock on TOS, Data in TNG, and Odo in DS9. To do that yet again in Voyager was getting old. And I'm sorry, but doing that at the cost of developing stories for the rest of the crew bugged the hell out of me. Once Jeri came on, it's like the writers forgot all about any characters other than Doc, Seven and Janeway.
Both actresses are great, as was evidenced by every single scene they shared! It must have been extremely difficult on both of their energies, but they not only pulled it off, THEY NAILED IT! Thank you Kate, and thank you Jeri for some of the best scenes of Star Trek EVER!!!
That was the most open and unfiltered cast interview I have ever seen. Usually these play out like perfect little PR bits: Oh, he was such an AMAZING director, the other actors are my family, blah blah blah. Refreshing to see such honesty.
I can tell that the experience left a bad after-effect on Miss Ryan, but she's such a consummate professional that she will show her respect for Kate Mulgrew as a "talented actress" *before* she talks about how difficult the experience was. That's a classy woman right there.
Classy, as well as the realization that without the show, she would still be a virtual unknown. She clearly is mature, and classy enough to be very appreciative of the good fortune to be involved with the show.
YES THIS, couldn't agree more,,feel SO bad for her, garret the effect it had,but glad they can put it behind them..Voyager was so incredible and it would be sad for any of them to split bc of that.
Yes, she is. But then again the feud wasn't Mulgrew's fault either. After a couple of seasons much of the premise gets rewritten, including shifting from "leading woman of stunning ability" to "leading woman of stunning appearance". That's not something you just brush off.
If she was really being professional, she wouldn’t have mentioned that it was a difficult working relationship. I don’t know anything about it, and I don’t want to. They both would have come off better, if they’d kept it private.
Not traumatizing, necessarily, but emotionally devastating. To see people you consider family not getting along, and having to work in that environment for sometimes 18 hours straight each day…that’s the kind of pain that takes a while to heal.
Garret is a good friend to try and help guide his old friends to a reconciliation even if it takes so many years. May we all be so lucky as to find a kind friend like him.
Have you met him? He's awesome. When you talk to him at a con he makes you feel like you're talking to an old friend. when he does a panel it's generally the best panel you'll see all day.
Remember that episode where Ensign Kim made the wrong calculation and doomed Voyager to a icy death but his future self ends up fixing the problem. Garrett Wang trying to bring Kate and Jeri together to broker a peace between them kinda feels the same way. As long as he's alive I think he'll never give up on that.
If you keep the timeline parallel to the years the 90s/00s shows broadcast, then that future would have happened(relatively) in 2013. He still shows no signs of looking as old as they aged him up to be for then.
Niquita Williams it was one of the few episodes that used his character well. There had been a few of them, but this was by far the best. Often he was just the butt monkey for whatever new threat they were facing, but in this episode, it is his loyalty to a fault, and his need to save those that he loves, that pushes him to do terrible things. His fear of failing and inability to accept his own mistakes is the core conflict of the show, and this episode played into that part of his character perfectly. It was his episode. Amazingly you can see that part of Wang’s own character in this video: he is a peacemaker. He needs people to be ok. He needs to make it right. That’s his arc.
Very moving. I have hopes that Garrett's emotional response to the whole Kate v Jeri mess was the start of them addressing it and building the bridges that have caused them to be seen side by side having a blast at recent cons. It's been wonderful to see the whole cast together obviously enjoying being all together. Voyager cast is my fav cast.
The scenes between Seven and Janeway were some of the best in Star Trek history. I reckon the real life emotional tension between the actors probably made them better.
Part of the reason was that Ryan represented the antithesis of what Mulgrew was trying to do with women depicted on television. She wanted to project a powerful woman who wasn't sexualized. And then Jeri Ryan shows up. And Jeri Ryan had her own very valid reasons for taking the role and allowing her character to be sexualized to a degree (basically she was out of work and had kids to feed). So it's a whole slew of issues.
@@selderane I can't blame Kate, nothing against Jeri either as an actress, T'Pol ( Jolene) had the same type of rol on Enterprise, both great performers with sadly more focus on sexiness to attract another type of audience: (horny teenagers among them) ratings, ratings.
I'm taking a really wild guess, but Kate wasn't having alot of fun because she was away from her kids because working on any of the Trek shows you get there very early in the morning and you're there til late nite.Kate might have took her frustration out on Jeri.
@@selderane your comment hit bang on. You should write this as a separate comment not a reply so that more people can see it. This is exactly what I heard happened. Both Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew had children. Kate fought very hard with the studio to avoid being sexualized. She refused to have her character have a relationship with chakotay. She won that battle, and then Jeri Ryan came along. Jeri seemed all too willing to play a female sexualized character which took attention away from Kate Mulgrew's authoritative female character.
@@selderane But 7 of 9 was an interesting and deeply developed character, unlike Janeway. I think Kate was just jealous that she didn't get to be crowned "queen feminist" instead of helping to promote a popular female character. All she saw was boobs, but that's not what everybody saw. Even teenage boys appreciated her personality.
The TNG cast worked really well together and the main cast members are still close in real life, however some of the other casts didn't work as well together. But it's a testament to their acting.
Kate didn't like a few things about Jery. Jery was the girlfriend of Brannon Braga( one of the producers of the show) and she allowed herself to show up late for work. This got on Kate's nerves. I have heard her saying that she didn't like people showing late for work when others were already there. That's why it was a problem between them, but they are amazing actresses. Nothing of their animosity was shown on the big screen.
It's honestly a testament to both of their acting abilities. I thought they had some of the best chemistry on that show. There was this tremendous loyalty and respect as well as genuine love. Janeway was invested in Seven's rehabilitation and it showed. It's heartbreaking that there was that much animosity between the two of them. I always like to think that my heroes in reality get along.
Maybe that animosity was used by the Writers. One actor/charector i always thought at odds with the rest of the crew was Lt Paris aka Robert Duncan McNeill. I don't know for sure if he was at odds, but his scenes seemed to hold a tension which wasn't necessarily in the script. I wouldn't mind hearing his story.
I have to say finding out about this dynamic and how bad it was, and then watching GW on this video is near devastating. That the joy this crew brought us came at the cost of apparently such unbelievable tension
@@Savoots You can stay in your same position and still get a promotion in your rank. Don't you watch Law & Order: SVU?? Pretty soon Olivia will be the Chief of Police for all of NYC and they will probably still let her stay at her same office instead of One P.P.
7 was obviously very nice to look at but seriously, the story lines and plots they were able write with that character were amazing and much needed. Watching her struggle with regaining humanity and the relationships she forged along the way.
I'd rather see Gates, LeVar or Michael Dorn! Three actors who actually have a relationship with Picard! I hope the writers and producers aren't that shortsighted and do right by Jeri and her character! After that fiasco with Jonathan and Marina showing up on Enterprise, you'd think the writers and producers would have learnt their lesson! Once again, Jeri is used as a publicity stunt to bring in viewers! I'm calling it for what it is! That said, I won't begrudge any of the actors their luck in landing the job! I DO look forward to the series! If Brent Spinner had kept his mouth shut about Jonathan and Marina's appearance, I'd have more to look forward to! Brent was being unprofessional because you don't talk about other actors' participation in a project!
@@fredrika27 can't completey disagree. I'm sure we'll see cameos and guest spots. I'm definitely not interested in TNG 2.0 either or TNG becoming TOS movies on TV format. worf's one of my favorite characters but he's very one-dimensional in been explored to death. There's not much more they can do with worf so Cameo enough for
@@skred6792 I understand your concerns and do agree ST: Picard should have a life of its own without relying on the crew from TNG for plot development. That said, the TNG crew's back story should not be "sacrificed" so that Picard looks the hero. I believe fans have high expectations as to what happened to the crew. Brent Spinner's statement that Troi and Riker only had only brief cameo in the series really upset some fans who naturally want to see what the couple is up to! Putting Riker and Troi "down on the farm" after an illustrious 20+ year isn't going to go over well either! The writers and producers will have to tread carefully regarding cameos in order to get a maximum bang for their appearance!
@@fredrika27 Speak for yourself. McFadden, Burton and Dorn aren't hot. Jeri Ryan is sex on legs. In fact, fuck Stewart. Just have the show be all about Jeri Ryan in a bikini. I'd binge watch that!
Binge watching Voyager still I can actually understand. Think of having your own series with a team, and then they feel to get another actor in because what you do suddenly isn't good enough anymore. In a way Janeway never got to expand her character much. It was always tough, strict, masculine-energy Cpt Janeway. Even when she was stranded with Chakotay, thinking forever. So I do get it was tough to handle. And you sure as hell must give her credit as I can NOT tell anywhere that she feels that way about Jeri Ryan. NOTHING. She actually seems very fond of her. So as an actress she did a bloody good job!
I think Kate was close to the actress who played Kes, and when she was booted, and the way she was booted, I'm sure she thought Kes was replaced by Seven.
@@skrdykatjunior6125 I mean, she kind of was...These two characters didn't even get the change to interact other than that one episode were she tried to destroy the ship.
Jeri Ryan was gorgeous in every single scene of voyager. That suit, OMG. BUT. Voyager will always be about Janeway for me. It is the series that is defined by having a female captain. Not a female in a man's role acting like a man would, but behaving very much like a woman, with strength, compassion, intelligence and professionalism. If I had a daughter, I would want Kathryn Janeway to be a role model. Her character is unique throughout film and television.
I have a son and I have always told him that Janeway was the type of woman he needs to marry! He also likes Troi, Tilly and Michael! When I ask him about Seven, he shook his head said that he likes his women realistic and approachable!
I came across this randomly, as I don’t usually seek out ST content. I had no idea the rift between Jerry and Kate was even a thing, so that alone took me by surprise but to see Garrett breakdown like that got me. It’s amazing to think of how complex any creative endeavor is… feels like a miracle just to witness it come to fruition.
I really like the fact that the main actors on Star Trek Next Generation- I think there's 8 of them- are all really close in real life and got along great on the set, although it may have been hard for the crew when they joked around too much. And to some people it's a serious show but to me it's clear the characters have great chemistry and there are a lot of funny part.
The other night, after watching the first Terminator with my son, he said, "Why do all shows about the future have everything so dark and destroyed?" I reminded him of Star Trek. To which he replied, "Oh yeah! That's nice." Optimism, and the work required to see it through, are a huge part of Star Trek.
Jeri and Robert Picardo’s acting was next level compared to everyone else’s in this show for me. Their combined scenes were also the best of the whole show. The episode where the EMH has to take over Seven’s body is a great example.
@@leif1075 Tim Russ did a good job, but honestly I think Mulgrew was a little grating at times, and Dawson felt a little one note. Angry Klingon. That was at the crux of *most* of Torres episodes. Which is a discretid to the actress, because she was very capable.
So pleased Garret got his wish of reconciliation, every time I see or hear nice things between Kate and Jeri it just makes me happy :) For example from a recent TrekMovie interview Kate said during the Star Trek Cruise in March she spent hours sitting out on the deck reminiscing and catching up with Jeri. They were also on a recent Stars In The House live stream benefiting The Actors Fund with the rest of the cast - hilarious! Best crew.
When the show ended, the reason for the animosity ended. Fortunately, both have gone on to other projects including Star Trek: Kate in Progedy and Jeri in Picard.
Wow did not know about this. Bless Garrett. For me Voyager really did take off when Jeri arrived as Seven. She really enhanced the show to another level.
it really turned into must watch tv when Jeri Ryan joined the crew - as it had been a bit patchy with stories and the cast still finding their feet - then they thriow in the borg and the liquid space monsters and non stop space battle action, also it did not hurt that Jeri was very eye catching in her costume
yeah, it's obvious the writers needed a second wind, and they got it with Seven and the Borg. All of a sudden it felt like they were inspired to write. I think they might have gone a little heavy on Seven after that, but you could tell they were excited by fresh material. They didn't know what to do with Kes.
I love how they tip-toed around the real issue, which is that Jeri was brought in as the sex symbol in that tight catsuit of hers to appeal to the adolescent male audience that is a big target group for Sci-Fi in general. And it was that fact that ruffled the feathers of Kate the wrong way because she felt it was undermining all the effort that had gone into the message of taking women seriously for other things than just their looks by having a female captain and chief engineer. I'm not saying that was the fault of either Kate or Jeri, as they were both just playing their roles to the best of their abilities (which was amazing). And it's not even the fault of the studio, because their decision to get a character like Seven in the show did give the show the new boost of energy it needed and therefore also the continued platform to bring that original message to the attention of the public. It's just sad that the political and marketing decision making inadvertently pitched these women against each other for a long time and the effect it had on the rest of the cast. I'm really glad they got over that eventually as the both left their mark on what will forever be a great legacy.
Jeri and Garrett didn't tip-toe around issue at all. Robert Beltran said the rest of the actors were pissed that when Jeri was brought on to the show, all other actors lines were drop down quite a bit and nothing Jeri could do about it. Jeri knew actors were pissed by it.
I doubt anyone on that panel would have been comfortable talking about how jeri ryan was sexualized... we were all there, we know what they did (and CONTINUED in Enterprise) Kate had every reason to be mad at their handlers but to take it out on a woman who answered a casting call is pretty immature.
The show didn't have the strongest characters to begin with and that always dogged the show. Compared to TNG, they're second rate, and the series an afterthought. I think the show needed a stronger engine and characters from the get go.
Seal0626 I think there are contractual limits to how many characters from different shows they can use. Also I'd guess they'll want to bring in most of the cast of TNG before the other two shows.
@@JStarStar00 Yeah, if Taurik/Vorik and Nick Locarno/Tom Paris are still anything to go by, bureaucracy can hobble many a crossover. Though maybe it's different when it's a principle cast character, rather than a matter of the writers of one episode being due royalties for the continued use of a character they introduced.
@@MauiDave74 I'd rather they didn't, that romance arc came out of nowhere and should go back there. They had no chemistry or compatibility. The only thing they really had in common was decorated foreheads.
The only problem here, and it's the same with a LOT of similar comments regarding Picard, is people seem to be looking at Picard as "the reunion show" and not a story focusing on the end of Picard's story. Leonard Nimoy once brought up the Generations situation and why he opted against appearing as Spock. It was clear to him that there was an attempt to just get the characters in the brief prologue but, other than Kirk, there was no function for the characters in the script which couldn't be assigned to someone else. He didn't see a contribution to the story for the character and chose to pass on the offer. It's natural to want to see TNG characters appear as they have the closest relationship to Picard, but how would the cast of Voyager and Deep Space Nine be written into the series and be relevant to the story being told?
I’ve heard that the relationship was difficult, for what ever reason. But watching the Borg story unfold, was some of the best scenes, I love the 7 and Janeway interactions they made us all believe that this was a family. Wouldn’t change a thing xxxxx
It's funny how emotions you thought were long gone can creep up out of no where. If I remember correctly he was always threatened with having his character written off the show. I think being nominated as one of People Magazines most beautiful people of the year saved his job. It sounds like he was dealing with several stressful situations during the run of that show.
Mitch G, The People magazine issue, though long bought as the reality behind the situation by many folks, really was a pig in a poke. Lien's personal trauma and her absolute refusal to let anyone provide a means of helping her, was what led to her being fired, which wasn't finalized until production of the 4th season began. Both of them were being considered to get the chop (though, from the perspective of a number of writers, at the least, Lien was much more highly thought of), but Lien's issues had started to effect her reliability on set, an issue which couldn't be gotten past, so.....
People are actually getting the story wrong Braga and Jeri bullied Kate who had fought so hard over the years for her position in Voyager. Also read both of Kate’s memoirs and you will realise what a remarkable performance she gave under difficult circumstances
Nice to see this. The show could have gone a couple more seasons and avoided the abrupt ending. Same thing happened to Enterprise. It's unfortunate when the big wigs think they know best and meddle.
WOW, I never knew this, and here I thought they worked beautifully together. I have to admit Kate did an AWESOME job, I also love Genevieve Bujold, but watching trailers with her acting as Janeway was like watching a corpse trying to act.
Honestly whenever I think about Voyager, Janeway is the first to come to mind. Her impact was heavy on me, even more so as the first female captain. Seven coming in didn't change this for me.
My feelings as well. I was trying to make a post saying this very thing and you said it so well. It was always the powerful captain Janeway for me. I liked 7 but I thought they made too much of it and I got bored with the borg. Oh no not them again.
This. Janeway will ALWAYS have a place in my heart. Seven coming in didn’t remove any of my esteem for her. They were both so important to me, and neither of them outshone the other in my eyes. In fact, their moments together only enhanced both characters. Seven is a great character, and she would’ve been just as amazing without the gross sexualizing catsuit. (That bs didn’t age well AT ALL.) Janeway WAS a pioneer for women in television, no question about it. She IS an inspiration to people. And Rick Berman’s sexist bs did NOT extinguish that legacy, in my eyes. What Janeway means to me will never be destroyed. And I hope Kate Mulgrew knows that. That Voyager may disappointed us by making Jeri Ryan go through that sexist bs, but it isn’t what any of us remember when we think of it fondly. We remember Janeway, the Captain who was a Scientist first. Who was kind, intelligent, and more badass than any man. And Seven, who gave us outsiders a home on Voyager, and taught us what it is to be human.
I didn't notice any of this on screen at the time so kudos to all involved or whatever animosity was there was put down to their acting ability from my perspective.
I am a big Startrek fan and I have always loved the Harry Kim character and it is lovely to see Garret Wang own his feelings and be comfortable and passionate enough to express them publicly. That ladies and gentlemen is a true man. This only makes me love the character he played even more. Well done Garrett. Cheers Darren.
I have friends who never believe me when I say Jeri Ryan was a great actress who brought more depth to the show. It was hard so see past the wardrobe and her looks and the VERY obvious reason she was selected. And it did get tiresome later on when it seemed to become the Seven/Doctor show. But that can't diminish what she did with the role. She was phenomenal.
She’s a fantastic actress. That episode where she picked up the personalities of all the people she assimilated was genius. And the episode where she switches bodies with the doctor! Amazing!
It's obvious that Kate felt threatened by Jeri's addition to the show, very much like Barbara Bain did when Catherine Schell came in the 2nd season of Space 1999. It's jarring to any lead actor/actress who's starting to get upstaged by a supporting cast member.
@@davidmagson6736 Yes nice parallel and I think one of the things people need to remember is even as bad as it is for female actors today, 25 years ago it was 10 times worse. It was extremely difficult for women to find lead roles primarily played by men. Women fought hard to get every good gig they got. So I can imagine Kate's frustration after bringing Jeri on. She could have been more professional about it is all. (I heard she was really nasty and snarky) But I also understand Kate's personal life was upside down as well. Not sure how I would cope with everything at once either.
@Darryl Ruiz He's easy to get along with and we've seen that countless times, also, he's at that age where he wont care about professional jealousy, so yeah, I suspect they will get along fine as he seems to get along with most people and it's understandable why, he's very likeable.
They would NEVER have put Jeri Ryan in a catsuit and put her on The Next Generation. They would NEVER have upstaged and dumbdown TNG, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Brent Spiner, "like that." They would NEVER have turned TNG into a weekly T&A showcase. But THEY felt comfortable DOING it to Kate Mulgrew. Telling, to say the least.
Don’t hold your breath. I’ve met him professionally and he has a certain disdain for TNG fans. Of course he does his best to mask it openly, but he can be a bit bitter.
Though I have to admit, you can define Voyager by before 7 of 9 and after 7 of 9. That character was that significant to the trajectory of Voyager. It completely changed the dynamics for the better. It gave the show a shot in the arm just at the perfect time. In fact, it further developed Janeway's character. You would think Kate would be appreciative of that and not hold it against Jeri. It's very disappointing to know that she resented the focus Jeri's character received.
What gets lost sometimes about Jeri Ryan due to her amazing looks, is that she is an amazing actress. Everything she has been in that I see is very very good. I loved her in Leverage for example. What a great character. She makes it look so effortless.
Wow! I didn't expect that from Garrett! Having met him last year, I had the feeling that he was a very happy-go-lucky person, not necessarily a deep, sensitive thinker. It's refreshing to see a guy express such emotional and social sensitivity.
Like Garrett I always hate any awkwardness between work colleagues, but luckily it seems jeri was strong enough to make it through and both were professional enough not to let it show on their performances. I do feel like it would be great to hear Kate talk through this one day publicly as human animosity is something that can come across us all at our most vulnerable.
Whatever pressures or tension that were going on behind the scenes, the cast and crew still did an outstanding job of making ST:V one of the best ST series in the franchise. I was never aware of any differences that were going on behind the scenes because when the curtains went up, they were all professionals and gave their best. I loved it and never missed an episode.
BECAUSE of Jeri & Garrett playing these 2 amazing characters, I chose to major in physics and later did astrophysics work. Thank you for the inspirations DESPITE my obliviousness to the real human dramas that I didn't see or pay attention to while watching the show. Thanks for making me fall in love with the stars & their elegant equations. You both RoCk mY SaNiTy 🖖🥰
Jeri Ryan is a very nice woman IRL. I met her once on a Saturday morning at the since-closed Duke's coffee shop on Sunset Blvd. next to the Whisky in West Hollywood. Amazingly she was eating breakfast by herself. When I finished my meal at the counter I approached her and asked "do you mind accepting compliments from strangers?" Of course if she said yes it would make her seem like an ass, but she smiled and said no not at all. So I introduced myself (my name also is Gerry although spelled differently) so that was a starting point and we chatted pleasantly for several minutes. I told her I thought she was a terrific actress and which of her Voyager moments I had liked the most. She thanked me and was very gracious and even asked me some questions about my life such as what kind of work I did, etc. And we shook hands! Yes, I got to touch 7's body and you haven't! In person she was skinnier than she appeared on the show -- the thing about the camera adding 10 pounds is true in her case. But she was super nice and totally unpretentious.
@@ryanhealey8587 So sorry you feel that way! Garrett is human and had a very traumatic experience as a young man at the hands of people who are phrased to high heaven on this board! People find no wrong in Jeri's and Kate's behavior, but criticize Garrett for telling the truth! He's entitled to his feelings and is tired of covering for people who didn't give a rat's arse about him and his fellow colleagues! How about you show some empathy for the hard work Garrett put in!
I saw Garrett and Robert Beltran at a con in Sydney, Australia, after Voyager finished. Lovely guys, but damn, did they tear stripes off the show and some of the decisions made. The hardcore Voyager fans in the audience were dumbstruck in shock.
Wow. It is painful to see to people you know and love be so adversarial. I've experienced that. It's frustrating, heartbreaking, it makes you want to scream and cry and so many other things. And they are totally unaware in their conflict that it crushes you having to witness and be between it. I totally get how it feels. And it lingers. It doesn't go away, not completely.
If someones gets emotional about friends not getting along years back you know hes a genuine good guy. Such a rare trait these days to show such feelings. What a complete ultra sigma chad.
Jeri did a really good job of describing her relationship with Kate Mulgrew non verbally. She didn’t have to say much to know there was a lot of tension. She was very respectful and never came off as anything but professional. I salute you Jeri. Kate needed this series badly and her reactions more based out of fear INHO. What can you say about Garrett Wang? I’m sooo glad he was part of the show but so sad he was treated like a second class citizen. He deserved much better than that. He was a definite asset to the cast.
i've watched Voyager over and over again and i did detect a temour in seven's voice when doing a scene with Janeway.😔 It's not fair and it's not right.
I think many people don't realize how badly KM needed the show, any show, any job. Wasn't she on the verge of having to declare bankruptcy? They cast Geneviève Bujold, and had even started filming with her. Then they decided to replace her and Kate got "the call" that changed her life.
@@kristend344 Yes KM needed the job desperately. She was almost broke. Genevieve Bujold would have been horrible cast as the Captain. KM was absolutely perfect for the role.
I NEW A GIRL IN MY APT COMPLEXE. WHO DATED MR. WANG. SHE SAID HE. REALLY IS THAT NICE. A SIDE NOTE, HE AUTOGRAPHED EVERYTHING IN FRONT OF HIM FOR ME. HE IS ONE COOL DUDE.🖖🖖🖖🖖
Voyager wouldn’t have been the same without Seven, and though I wish they hadn’t put her in that damned catsuit and heels (in what universe would a Borg think heels are efficient??), I quickly forgot about it as her character portrayal overshadowed any kind of sexpot angle they’d originally intended for her. Her intelligence, wit, and growth were absolutely inspiring to me, and I was already head over heels in love with Captain Janeway so having the two of them plus B’ellana was a dream come true. I knew I wanted to work in science one day and I wanted to be just like them. The actresses did such a phenomenal job, and I never would have guessed there was any bad blood behind the scenes. It was good to see true, fleshed out representation of intelligent and powerful women whose power isn’t reliant on how many men they can make small, the way modern shows seem to do it.
It was more than just a show or a job for Garrett, he told me this once when I had a dinner with him. He really loves them as his family. It's hard to hear how hard it was. I'm so glad that Kate and Jeri seem to have been getting on better in recent years. I hope they're all a lot closer now.
I had no idea there was this kind of tension on set. They both played so well off each other on screen I never would have expected it. Also, I liked ensign Kim before and this just made me appreciate the actor so much more. It's nice to see actors "be human" when all we normally see are what the news wants to show for ratings.
Am so grateful and impressed by the honesty of them both. Cant be easy to answer the question honestly without throwing Mulgrew under the bus. I knew there had been tension but not the the point Mulgrew felt obliged to apologise years later! I suspected there was work relationship issues because Mulgrew sort of alluded to it in an interview. In her defence what Mulgrew said is that she resented the sexualisation that Jeri brought to the show and thought it was taken the show backward. Still not acceptable though. Jeri's outside appears to be only surpassed by her inside. Resistance is futile. I'll never resist assimilation ❤
@Steve Robertson or may be jealousy.? Mulgrew is a complicated character. It must have been horrendous for Jeri to do so many intimate dialogue day in day out with someone who couldnt stand you The peak of your career and you go to war every day. 😥
@@Harry-ql7gn Wow, thanks Harry. that is very eye-opening and causes me to lose some respect for Mulgrew. I adore this show and each character, but it's powerful message of high morals and family values becomes muddied by this petty behavior. If Kate has apologized truly, then good - she should.
I honestly couldn't tell that they didn't get along that well which is a testament to both of their talent
Yes, although at times there was definite tension between the two characters as well.
It's true.
Garrett is a good man. Both he and Jeri were both very honest and upfront without being inflammatory. It's admirable. Kudos to the both of them.
no, its not admirable and not a thing you should be proud of. its unprofessional and inadequate.
these are grown up persons, you do not bad mouth a person behind her back. especially not in public.
@@juu2356 They did not bad-mouth anybody. They said it was hard to work with Kate Mulgrew. That's an acceptable comment.
He believed anything alRyan told him
Garret Wang was constantly being denied requests to let his character grow and develop over the course of the show, or even advance in rank beyond Lieutenant.
I'm pissed at how garret and his character were treated in the show. Also apparently Kate mulgrew was difficult to work with all around
@@f1nger605 that's totally it, garret was just as good an actor as everyone else on the show, the writers keep neglecting characters

It breaks my heart that Garret was bottling these things inside for so long, and Jeri is a good friend for giving him that hug, he surely needed it.

Kate said this:
“Let’s be very straight about something,” said Kate matter of factly “This is on me, not Jeri.
The catsuit was Trek sinking to its lowest.

I was honestly baffled when I start reading about how much tension there was between the cast members of Voyager because the actors did a fantastic job in playing their characters.
Kind of like the Next Generation and all the issues that especially plagued the first two years. Some of that tension maybe helped certain parts of it ironically.

Whoa!

@@d.v.crystal5589 Why? It's so long in the past now. Who cares if it gets mentioned. She's just being open about it.
The fact Garrett cried shows how traumatizing their drama must've been
I believe it. I am watching the Voyager 20th century reunion now and Kate Mulgrew is the only one of the women there; it can't be a coincidence.
He's an actor...
Wang cries at the drop of a hat. Don't read to much into it.
He's obviously friends with both of them and friends don't like to see friends fighting with each other.
Not traumatizing, necessarily, but emotionally devastating. To see people you consider family not getting along, and having to work in that environment for sometimes 18 hours straight each day…that’s the kind of pain that takes a while to heal.
I love their realistic honesty. No blame. Things just happen, people react, and hopefully they learn and get wiser and grow up, and forgive.
Garret is a good friend to try and help guide his old friends to a reconciliation even if it takes so many years. May we all be so lucky as to find a kind friend like him.
Garrett is such a good person - hands down.
Garret Wang: First Class Human
Have you met him? He's awesome. When you talk to him at a con he makes you feel like you're talking to an old friend. when he does a panel it's generally the best panel you'll see all day.
Remember that episode where Ensign Kim made the wrong calculation and doomed Voyager to a icy death but his future self ends up fixing the problem. Garrett Wang trying to bring Kate and Jeri together to broker a peace between them kinda feels the same way. As long as he's alive I think he'll never give up on that.
Great point, and that's one of my favorite episodes
The episode was titled “Timeless”. STV 100th episode. One of the best episode.
He didn't fix the problem, he could never solve the equation so instead he sent a warning to past Seven of Nine to get Voyager to abort.
Man I'm not crying you're crying. We don't deserve Garrett he's too pure for this planet 😭😭
Yeah maybe.
Maybe he just cares too much.
Or maybe he misses someone.
Interesting fact- when Garrett Wang opens his microwave he detects tachyon emissions.
😅😅
I had NO idea that there was that much tension between Kate and Jeri. Damn!!
Wow, that was a tear jerker. Made me cry a bit. I never knew that Kate and Jerri had issues behind the scenes. I thought they worked so well together.
I think they have buried the hatchet and are some what friends now
The TNG cast worked really well together and the main cast members are still close in real life, however some of the other casts didn't work as well together. But it's a testament to their acting.
This is a revelation to me. I simply turned on the TV and happily watched. I never knew this drama was going on.
Garrett seems like a wonderful human. Such refreshing honesty here.

Jeri is still so beautiful. Can't wait to see her on Picard.
Phrasing :D
I'd rather see Gates, LeVar or Michael Dorn! Three actors who actually have a relationship with Picard! I hope the writers and producers aren't that shortsighted and do right by Jeri and her character!
My respect to Garret Wang
Jeri Ryan was gorgeous in every single scene of voyager. That suit, OMG. BUT. Voyager will always be about Janeway for me. It is the series that is defined by having a female captain. Not a female in a man's role acting like a man would, but behaving very much like a woman, with strength, compassion, intelligence and professionalism. If I had a daughter, I would want Kathryn Janeway to be a role model. Her character is unique throughout film and television.
discord2000 I agree except, and I know Im in the minority here, I always found Mulgrew/Janeway way more attractive

If only it wasn't so preachy, and so heavy-handed in its moral preening.
They seemed to start bringing in more dark elements after Rodenberry died.
Except unfortunately the new Trek which is dystopian
Jeri and Robert Picardo’s acting was next level compared to everyone else’s in this show for me. Their combined scenes were also the best of the whole show. The episode where the EMH has to take over Seven’s body is a great example.
Don't you think Kate Mulgrew especially and Tim Russ and Roxann Dawson and sometimes Ethan Phillips were on par?
Credit to Jeri. She was playing Seven, playing the doctor.

So pleased Garret got his wish of reconciliation, every time I see or hear nice things between Kate and Jeri it just makes me happy :)
For example from a recent TrekMovie interview Kate said during the Star Trek Cruise in March she spent hours sitting out on the deck reminiscing and catching up with Jeri. Well, they pulled it off, because the relationship between Janeway and Seven was one of the best things about Voyager.
Wow did not know about this. Bless Garrett. For me Voyager really did take off when Jeri arrived as Seven. She really enhanced the show to another level.
I know she enhanced a part of my anatomy to another level.
@@idesof How StarTrek of you.
it really turned into must watch tv when Jeri Ryan joined the crew - as it had been a bit patchy with stories and the cast still finding their feet - then they thriow in the borg and the liquid space monsters and non stop space battle action, also it did not hurt that Jeri was very eye catching in her costume
Not just her being hot, but it her story arc allowed a somewhat darker theme at times.
yeah, it's obvious the writers needed a second wind, and they got it with Seven and the Borg.
Yeah you're also leaving out the part where being an asshole to your co-workers isn't okay regardless.
I doubt anyone on that panel would have been comfortable talking about how jeri ryan was sexualized... we were all there, we know what they did (and CONTINUED in Enterprise)
Kate had every reason to be mad at their handlers but to take it out on a woman who answered a casting call is pretty immature.
I never got why finding a woman sexy equates to not taking them seriously.
The show didn't have the strongest characters to begin with and that always dogged the show. Compared to TNG, they're second rate, and the series an afterthought. I think the show needed a stronger engine and characters from the get go.
My deepest admiration and respects to the entire cast. They were all phenomenal and moved over the past.
Wang seems to pretty much embody the message of Star Trek. I'm disappointed that he doesn't seem to be involved in Picard.
You would think they'd have to bring in Chakotay though, right? Ah who are we kidding, it's Alex Kurtzman.
Wow! It is no wonder everyone from the cast seemed to just love Garret Wang. A genuine loving person for sure.
wang is so beautiful you can see why the crew fell in love with him.

Being an Asian actor in Hollywood is brutal, for sure!

Wow i can't believe how open and honest they were about this.
WOW, I never knew this, and here I thought they worked beautifully together. I have to admit Kate did an AWESOME job, I also love Genevieve Bujold, but watching trailers with her acting as Janeway was like watching a corpse trying to act.
supposition is GB decided she didn't want to do a series, so she put in a terrible performance so they'd fire her.
If they wanted a French-ish actress for Janeway, why didn't they ask Yvette Mimieux? She was almost the same age as Bujold.
Suddenly he’s my favourite character. That was really touching.
I always Iiked his character. He seemed really smart and wanting to do his best for Voyager.
I didn't notice any of this on screen at the time so kudos to all involved or whatever animosity was there was put down to their acting ability from my perspective.

ST:V is one of the best and they contributed to its greatness. Love how they spoke about uncomfortable situations.
Amazing!
And, Jeri Ryan is very attractive and the competition between her and Kate would have been uncomfortable for sure.
It's obvious that Kate felt threatened by Jeri's addition to the show, very much like Barbara Bain did when Catherine Schell came in the 2nd season of Space 1999. It's jarring to any lead actor/actress who's starting to get upstaged by a supporting cast member.
Koldeman Nice parallel.
I have a feeling Jeri will get a much better experience working with Patrick Stewart and the TNG guys.
@Darryl Ruiz He's easy to get along with and we've seen that countless times, also, he's at that age where he wont care about professional jealousy, so yeah, I suspect they will get along fine as he seems to get along with most people and it's understandable why, he's very likeable.
@Darryl Ruiz Jeri Ryan will in fact guess star on Stewart's new ST show.
Nooooooo

What year was this?
@@quelorepario Probably in the late 1990s. Sorry for the late response but I wasn't aware of your question.
Awwww Garret Wang is so pure. :(
Norm T why did Kes annoy you? I found her demeanor likeable
I liked him on the show. Now all I hear is whining.
@Norm T Yesss! She tap danced on my nerves so bad!
@@fredrika27 Do! You! Have! To! Use! So! Many! Exclamation! Marks!?
I saw Garrett and Robert Beltran at a con in Sydney, Australia, after Voyager finished. Lovely guys, but damn, did they tear stripes off the show and some of the decisions made. The hardcore Voyager fans in the audience were dumbstruck in shock.
Robert Beltran strikes me as the Harrison Ford type in that regard. There for the paycheck, no real love or loyalty for the material.
gee I'd love to hear what they said
Jeri Ryan could say more with just a look than most actors.
Wow Garret really was/is as sweet as his character. Make this man a producer, he would absolutely be loved by on screen talent.
That was quite touching - two decent, down to earth (see what I've done there?) people...
Harry Kim always has been and remains to this day my favorite character in all of Star Trek.
@@kristend344 yes she was going to lose her house
Seems it was quite tough to the point of bullying blog.trekcore.com/2014/11/ryan-mulgrew-feud/
