I think Velazquez was painting you and me and all that have looked at this masterpiece through the ages, with the consent of course of the Royal family, which were aware at the time of the millions of strangers witnessing a millisecond of their lives, which in fact made them, you, me and all, immortalized. Mystery solved, and no, I haven't been smoking anything greenish and exotic.

What I wouldn't give to see Velazquez's presentation of this painting to King Phillip. He must've had the biggest shit eating grin as the royale couple, expecting a portrait like the one displayed in the mirror, saw that he had painted their exact view from where they stood for the portrait. Must've been lots of laughter and utter amazement at what is painting's greatest magic trick. You KNOW he wore that exact black outfit at the time too XD
For all the many old and new interpretation of the painting , they failed to realized that the paintings purpose was actually simple: it was meant to be a joke for the royal couple🤣 They stood there, hours and hours for days just to look at the final result and wtf...
You describe the painting as a combination of "philosophy and poetry"--the best summing up of this masterpiece I've heard. In "Les Mots et les choses," Foucault--like many others before him--teases out the philosophical meanings. Clearly, the painting has many meanings and many enigmas, but the reason it's my favorite painting is I like looking at it, and my favorite character is that marvelous dog.
What a move to be commissioned to paint the royal portrait and paint this instead. I kinda love it, to be honest. If they were silly and sentimental like me, it would've made a great surprise.
Yeah, they kinda went deep into art theory. They're basically saying Velazquez is ultimately trying to suggest that painters are intellectuals/poets more than they are simple craftsmen. While now we look at painting as an intellectual practice, at the time painters were seen as more as "workers" or "crafters" (or people who just make stuff, like bowls and vases). However, the commentators are saying that Velazquez was showing off how he can make smudges of paint create an entire new reality for people to experience, and thus painters should be appreciated as something more than just "crafters".
