Nice video, but you have been pronouncing Las Meninas as las Meniñas the second n sounds as the firs one in Spanish

Man these Foucault critics go to whatever extent possible just to prove him wrong. There is no right or wrong. His ideas are so valuable regardless. Great video btw.

He hardly even explained Foucault's argument before jumping into the critique.

It is pronounced meh-NEE-nahs….there is no tilde over the second “n”, which would give it the mispronunciation you say 50 times. With all the research, you couldn’t get the Spanish pronunciation right?

Thanks for writing this comment, I’ve realized that I’ve been mispronouncing it too and I have a Spanish speaking mom 😅

Can’t believe that this is the major critique. As focault would argue, language is a social construction so doesn’t matter how it’s pronounced but rather what the listener gets from it. Subject to your own subjection

The most overthought painting in the world.

I applaud the attempt to pronounce the ñ (a very good ñ, by the way), but the word is Menina and it doesn't have an ñ.

how many different ways are you trying to say Meninas? I'm counting 3.

The central little girl, La Infanta Margarita, is the person most painted by Velazquez.
Then we get a lot of Foucault trying to tell us that what we are seeing is not what we are seeing....
I would like to point out that all artists in Spain, and indeed just about all of Europe, were really restricted in what they could paint. The Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834) was in full force during Velazquez's life (1599-1660) So all they could paint were portraits, landscapes, and religious or mythological themes.
Please also keep in mind that cameras did not exist and so artists were trying to make things as lifelike as possible.
