Man this video has been sitting in my project folder for ages, but it is finally here! I experimented with a slightly different editing style this time around. But enough about me. What are your guys' experience with Mermaid Melody? Did you know about this dub? Have a favorite song? Who is best mermaid (Rina hands down)? Can't wait to hear from you!
I love this show. I wish we had an English edition. I also love the manga. Did you hear there's a sequel manga? I recently hear about it myself. It's Pichi Pichi Pitch Aqua.
I’ve known the dub exists and I’ve known it just never came out. I was kinda disappointed. Anyways, Rina best mermaid I honestly wish they’d reboot Mermaid Melody cause it’s so early 2000s, but unfortunately we just got a sequel that’s lowkey kinda dookie
The biggest pain? The voice actresses at least for this English dub had to sing each song over and over again instead of using the previous recording! No auto tune either! It was exhausting! So some episodes that had the songs really did sound better than the precise one. It actually reminded me more of Jem and the Holograms for some reason
Really, it’s just that the USA has NO IDEA how to market the magical girl genre. They’ve struggled with it for as long as I can remember being a young anime fan in the early 00s. Basically, there’s still this divide between “boy” and “girl” media and the latter is seen as “less than.” I worked in retail for years and saw that “girl” brands were a revolving door. Every three months there was some new character that then disappeared from shelves next quarter. As soon as you could ask “who is Sunny Day?” She was gone. There’s also the idea here that not only is most animation “for kids” but that magical girls are for four-year-olds and ONLY four-year-olds. And since crossing demographics is a foreign concept and that the line of what’s acceptable to show kids in Japan and America is different, that’s where we get either the watered and dumbed down dubs or no dub at all. Basically, companies don’t care and don’t want to put in effort for “girly” media unless it’s already a major hit because it’s way easier to just slap Elsa on something and make a quick $5 then put the effort and money into marketing something new.
Which is sad because I think Disney marketed their own version of magical girls really well. I mean, Sophia the first uses all the same ideas and products to get kids interested that Precure does.
I knew there was an English dub! Thought I imagined it after reading the manga, but no, I must have seen something and spent way too much time scouring the internet trying to find it.
In the Greek dub version, we had different actresses for the voices and different for the singing parts. And it is actually pretty rare that i can find it in my language and not in English. Bc it was a huge hit, and it is such a shame, since in America they always dub anime.
I was never too obsessed with Mermaid Melody as a series, but I truly ADORE almost all of the songs that were created for it. Most likely never being able to listen to them in English is what definitely makes this so sad :(
I think there's a huge chance Mermaid Melody will get a reboot in 2025 because Mermaid Melody got a full blu-ray 20th anniversary release in 2023 and Tokyo Mew Mew got a 20th anniversary Blu-ray release in 2020 and got rebooted released in 2022 so it's a very similar pattern. I wouldn't be surprised if Mermaid Melody reboot continues till the storyline progresses to sequel Mermaid Melody Aqua and Tokyo Mew Mew New continues with adapting A La Mode because Smewthee group hasn't disbanded so there's hope they're working on other Tokyo Mew Mew stuff but slowed down due to Mia Ikumi passing.
We've unearthed so much lost media this year. I'm hoping this will be the next big discovery. Mermaid Melody is still one of my favorites of all time and was one of the first anime I watched fully in Japanese, hoping for an English release.
An intriguing fact about Clan TVE in Spain is that they often provide English dubs for a large majority of their shows. In fact, they were the very first TV network to air PopPixie with English as an alternate language option long before it ever landed on other streaming platforms. They also had a handful of the episodes uploaded in English on their website. With this in mind, it’s entirely possible (and very likely) that someone watching back then could have switched the language settings on their remote and stumbled across the English dub of Mermaid Melody by chance. Maybe if the dub ever re-airs, it'll be found. Great video!
quick correction it's not "if a mermaid confesses their love" it' "if a mermaid confesses their identity" so the lucia who goes to school with kaito can never tell him he's the mermaid who he's in love with both of lucia's forms have told kaito they love him but not that they were the same person (he has to figure it out on his own)still this is so sad i love this show and am so sad it never got a dub but at the same time the dubbed songs would also be really weird to listen tooXD
Yeah As much as it saddens me that we'll never see an English dub of it now since it's been almost 20 years since it came out, a part of me can't help but see it as a blessing in disguise. I imagine it would've been hard to find good voice actors who could sing and still suit the characters.
I feel so bad for the producers, writers, english translators, voice actors and the rest of the crew of cancelled and shelved english dub of My Mermaid Melody. Imagine recording all the english dub and the english version of the songs through their hardwork, passion, and dedication. Then it was never ended up releasing it, it's such a missed opportunity for the success of Pitchi Pitchi Pitch in USA. It could've been big and so popular just like Sailor Moon. I just realized right now that there was supposed to be an english dub of this anime. If it wasn't for this video, I would have never known about it. I really want to hear the all songs in English so bad! From the opening song, ending song, and most of the songs in the soundtrack. In the Philippines, My Mermaid Melody aired wayback in 2007 under the title of 'Pitchi Pitchi Pitch' in Tagalog dubbed. That's why I've known this series for such a long time. As far as I can remember, they didn't translate the songs in our language. They just retained the official soundtracks in the anime and their singing voices in Japanese. I had a Hanon keychain figure that I bought at a market, I fell in love with this series so much. Definitely one of my absolutely favorite animes of all time.
Hi Rose, it's a pity all those episodes and songs were never released, I would love to hear the music. PS: I'm from Spain and here the local dub was HUGUE literally all the girls in school were singing the songs and using the catchphrases, but unfortunately because of license limits no merchandise was ever officially made here
Mermaid Melody was really when I first fell in love with anime. I'd watched Pokemon and Hamtaro for a while before then, but this was the point where I recognized anime as something distinct. The songs are so heartfelt and moving, and I still watch them to this day.
RUclips really suggested this video at such a perfect time! I'm somebody who also grew up watching Mermaid Melody, and it was the first anime I have EVER watched when I was 6 years old. It's definitely not the best, but to the fans and people who grew up with it, it's a masterpiece. It's such a nostalgic anime that leaves you longing, especially all the songs including the enemy songs are AMAZING, and have such great instrumentals and very fitting voices, and the types of songs for each of the characters. It just really makes you sad to know the dub was done, but never got it's opportunity to shine in all of it's potential and it really makes you wonder what we could've had and what it would've been like. 😢 It makes me happy to know many people still watched it nonetheless and so many cherish this anime til this day but I do hope one day, we all can get a small smidgen of what's been lost for all these years. 🐚 💜
If you wanna year Luci Christian voice the lead in another Magical Girl Anime might I recommend in Pretear, but the best performance in that show is the highly underrated Mandy Clark. My favorite Luci Christian performance is Madlax, but you have to stick around to the end for it to really pay off, she has some of the most Iconic Line Delivery in all of human history in that finale.
Shout out to the greatest Mermaid Melody cover artist who isn’t in the playlist link SegaStar! SegaStar is the goat of Mermaid Melody fan content!! He’s single handedly giving us more than we could have ever dreamed of!
I was obsessed with mermaid melody as a teen, its so sad to hear it was all dubbed in english but never released. It would have been so popular! I hope we get a reboot soon, its about time.
Mermaid Melody holds such a special place in my heart. I met one of my dearest friends because she asked if I wanted to be in her fandub back on VAA and it's something we still share things for with one another. I remember being so excited for the English dub when it was first announced was so sad back then when it just p much went poof. Thanks for this video.
They probably wanted to see if they’d have an audience before putting merch into production for the American Market. Especially after what happened with Doremi.
I've been following this lost media for so long!! I'm so sad a english dub hasn't been released but, I heard rumors that Kadokawa has this dub somewhere. Not where where the source was.
It would've been cool if crunchyroll or viz would've licensed this series (similar to what they did to sailor moon) TBH I wish they would do a uncut English dub on precure since crunchyroll has started putting the seasons on the service, it would actually be pretty interesting for a dub to give other people a chance to play a precure.
I won't mind if they will upload the unreleased english dub one day! I believe that the company still have the copies and files of the english dub in their archives
English Adaptation by ADV Films ADV Films was responsible for the English localization and dub of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. They were known for producing English dubs of several anime series, particularly in the early 2000s. Mermaid Melody was one of their projects, and while it was praised for staying true to the magical girl genre with vibrant characters and catchy songs, there were indeed some changes made to suit a Western audience. Name Changes: As with many anime dubs, character names were sometimes changed. For example, the main character, Lucia Nanami, was simply referred to as Lucia in the English dub, and other characters had slight name adaptations or modifications. Cultural Edits: Like many other anime series of the time, the show underwent some edits to remove or adjust culturally specific elements that might not be familiar to Western viewers. This was common practice for series that were aimed at a younger demographic, especially in the magical girl genre. The Cast of the Dub: Lucia (Asumi Nakata) - Luci Christian: Luci Christian voiced Lucia, the main protagonist and the mermaid princess with a powerful singing voice. She is an energetic and determined character who spends much of the series fighting to protect the ocean and her friends. Luci Christian is well-known for her voice work in both anime and video games, and her portrayal of Lucia is beloved by fans. Hanon (Hitomi Terakado) - Brittany Karbowski: Brittany Karbowski brought Hanon to life in the English dub. Hanon is Lucia's best friend and another mermaid princess with an incredible singing talent. She’s loyal, brave, and protective, adding a lot of depth to the trio of mermaid heroines. Brittany Karbowski has voiced several other notable characters, including in Black Clover, Alderamin on the Sky, and Fruits Basket (2001). Rina (Mayumi Asano) - Carli Mosier: Carli Mosier voiced Rina, the third member of the trio. Rina is a calm, composed character with a rich backstory. She is protective of her friends and also contributes to the group's efforts to defeat evil forces. Carli Mosier has voiced numerous characters in anime and video games, including roles in Fruits Basket (2001 version), The Twelve Kingdoms, and Fruits Basket (2019 version). The Cult Following of the Dub: While Mermaid Melody wasn't as widely recognized as some other magical girl series like Sailor Moon, the English dub still has a devoted fanbase. The combination of its catchy music, emotional moments, and the performances of Luci Christian, Brittany Karbowski, and Carli Mosier helped make the characters stand out. Many fans of Mermaid Melody still fondly recall the dub, especially because it provided an accessible way to experience the series. The music was also a huge part of the appeal. The mermaids’ ability to use their voices to battle evil and their beautiful songs were central to the series, and the English dub retained the musical elements, which resonated with viewers at the time.
Yeah, I think this is pretty much just a victim of the US anime houses flubbing magical girl content in the early 2000s. Cardcaptor Sakura was absolutely butchered and turned into "Cardcaptors", Tokyo Mew Mew was done so badly that I don't think it even finished airing. 2003/4 was around the time they just gave up on girls anime, and honestly it never really recovered, we don't even have much Precure in the west, the biggest one. The only anime shows they seemed to have success with at the time were Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Digimon, shonen stuff. Small wonder I suppose that nobody wanted to take a risk on a series like Mermaid Melody. Its a major own goal really, seeing as how the European versions of it (Particularly Spanish and Italian) are well beloved to this day, they could've had something special there. I agree with you though, it's probably unlikely that we'll ever see the original dub released. Kodansha won't even put the original manga back out digitally, despite the Aqua sequel being available. The manga has re-released in most of Europe over the last year, including for the first time ever in Spain, but the US/UK has been left out. They must just assume there's absolutely zero demand. It's a shame, I run the fan Discord and I know there are hundreds there who'd be ecstatic for even a crumb of new English content. Still, at least we've been eating good with all the dozens of new official artworks out of Japan this last year Another fun tid-bit, we also believe there was a second English dub, even more obscure than this one. We have no clips from it, but from what we've heard over the years there was a Malaysian dub of the series, which was in English. The only information we have is the actor who played "Lady Bat" though
@Dave102693 yeah I'm still frustrated about it ending with a To Be Continued at the end of the last episode for Mew Mew Power. It seemed like an obvious cliffhanger
If someone was able to find the lost pilot of the sailor moon live action show through library of congress, I don’t see why any records of this dub wouldn’t be hiding somewhere in there as well. ❤ just gotta keep digging!:
Like other commentors mentioned , I think this was sadly just a result of America being too scared to go all out on girly anime at the time. I remember being able to finally watch shows like Mermaid melody, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Ojamajo Doremi in theur full original format online back in middle school and I recall being utterly confused as to why they watered down the femininity of these shows as I thought they were so much better than the butchered 4Kids versions. A part of me also can't help but think that at least SOME misogyny towards the magical girl and shojo genres played a part on why these shows failed in the U.S as well.
This reminds me of Level 5 and the Situation with the Layton Mystery Detective Agency English Dub, a version of one of the episodes leaked online back in 2019 (which was most likely a Pilot Dub of some kind). Then Level 5 Proceeded to FULLY produce an English Dub (its Finished and ready to Go) for the series, which went Up for sale by a distributor (Fans found out about the English Dub because the distributor advertised it on there website) Yet Somehow no network or anybody picked it up. The VA’s aren’t much Help because there strict NDA’S and Can’t Share any Information About it. Like You would think since the Layton series is somewhat iconic a network would pick it up.
When they do rebbot this anime I feel they will take some things from the manga such as how Nikita owned a bathhouse instead of a hotel Also they would probably just use the Japanese songs in the dub because for budget r Lastly when the reboot does get announced I feel that people like Britney luci Monica and Blake will come back to “reprise their roles”
I remember there was a short tagalog clip of Mermaid Melody uploaded here on RUclips that aired in QTV back in the day. QTV used "Pitchi Pitchi Pitch" as an international title of the series. But the short clip eventually it got deleted due to copyrights just like Cardcaptor Sakura clip that aired on GMA/QTV. I really wish GMA will make an anime chanel and reair their old animes in QTV and GMA. I really love Maid Sama as well they did tagalog dubbed too.
and also I remember there is cardcaptor sakura clear card tagalog dub from YeyTV/A2Z dub they uploaded full episodes in bilibili before but for now eventually got deleted due for copyright ( if you saw the message notification has pop up your screen sorry the bilibili system they delete your video )
Of course t wouldn't surprise me if the actual reason is because they couldn't mess it up like they did with Cardcaptor Sakura because they just have to market it towards boys, as if everything revolves around them🙄🙄🙄
I grew up with the show's Hebrew dub but about one to two years ago the Hebrew dub vanished from the internet except maybe 2 episodes and a couple of songs. I never finished the series after they changed the voice actor of Luchia in the second season of the hebrew dub and I really regret it now. If someone knows aplace where you can still watch it in or a way to Access the episodes please tell me🤞🤞🤞❤ Also does someone know why it got removed from the internet?
It's quite weird cause, i think the Portuguese dub came from the spanish dub and there is NOTHING, linked to an English dub, the dub was pretty faithful to the original so to me it's quite weird thinking that it could come from a potential English dub
idk if it could come out from the company that did the spanish dub since its not up to watch in any streaming platform or dvd (just reuploads from the tv emission days) + we dont even have the ost in spotify. maybe if we can make the spanish dub available they could reconsider to upload the english one(?
I normally watch episode 1 half in sub and half in dub to determine which voices I prefer, for example bungo stray dogs I prefer dub over sub, but demon slayer sub is 1000% better.
I was obsessed with this show when I found it on RUclips. Luckily my school library had the entire manga series and I finished it in a week. I would love to rewatch an English dub of this show. 🥲

@@Mermain123 Yes! She's adorable!
My favorite songs are Taiyou no Rakuen (Promised Land), Legend of Mermaid, and Mother Symphony.
I wake up every day hoping that the entire series just appears online suddenly like other pieces of lost media.
realest thing ever
The biggest pain? The voice actresses at least for this English dub had to sing each song over and over again instead of using the previous recording! No auto tune either! It was exhausting! Which comes to show that any magical girl anime that is not Sailor moon has been screwed over in the US.
Heck, Sailor Moon itself was screwed over there too.

it's not "if a mermaid confesses their love" it' "if a mermaid confesses their identity"

Another fun tid-bit, we also believe there was a second English dub, even more obscure than this one. We have no clips from it, but from what we've heard over the years there was a Malaysian dub of the series, which was in English. The only information we have is the actor who played "Lady Bat" though

@@Palo_din nope Mew Mew Power was cancelled and didn't finish airing
@@Emily-cw7tjit was cancelled half way through
@Dave102693 yeah I'm still frustrated about it ending with a To Be Continued at the end of the last episode for Mew Mew Power. It seemed like an obvious cliffhanger
Not just magical girl anime, but many anime that is targeted towards girls/women.
If someone was able to find the lost pilot of the sailor moon live action show through library of congress, I don’t see why any records of this dub wouldn’t be hiding somewhere in there as well. ❤ just gotta keep digging!:
Someone send this to Ray Mona
That's a shame they couldn't get a TV deal. I think it would've fit in well on the Fox Box, or something along those lines.
They are still scared of girly anime currently
I finished rewatching the whole series this month within 7 days so seeing this video was the best ghing that could happen
When they do rebbot this anime I feel they will take some things from the manga such as how Nikita owned a bathhouse instead of a hotel
Also they would probably just use the Japanese songs in the dub because for budget r
Lastly when the reboot does get announced I feel that people like Britney luci Monica and Blake will come back to “reprise their roles”
There is also another lost english dub, but it’s from Malaysia.
I'm STILL mad this dub was never released!
There is also lost tagalog/filipino dub mermaid melody was aired QTV in 2007
And it's also lost media as well?
@Emily-cw7tj yup since no one can surface their dub :( I hope undustfixation will found this dub soon
@justinmv023 I honestly never even knew that there were Tagalog dubs for those shows 😂🤣
and also I remember there is cardcaptor sakura clear card tagalog dub from YeyTV/A2Z dub they uploaded full episodes in bilibili before but for now eventually got deleted due for copyright ( if you saw the message notification has pop up your screen sorry the bilibili system they delete your video )
Of course t wouldn't surprise me if the actual reason is because they couldn't mess it up like they did with Cardcaptor Sakura because they just have to market it towards boys, as if everything revolves around them🙄🙄🙄
Kaito got his memory back btw
It’s either Discotek Media liscense rescues it or another company will liscense it and perhaps dub it and if a reboot comes out same thing
big fan of the japanese opening and ending theme songs from the first season of mermaid melody
I grew up with the show's Hebrew dub but about one to two years ago the Hebrew dub vanished from the internet except maybe 2 episodes and a couple of songs. I never finished the series after they changed the voice actor of Luchia in the second season of the hebrew dub and I really regret it now. If someone knows aplace where you can still watch it in or a way to Access the episodes please tell me🤞🤞🤞❤
Also does someone know why it got removed from the internet?
I believe the mermaid melody discord may be able to help with that!
OH THANKS!!!!! I will try to look for it. I deeply thank you❤️❤️❤️
I don't know how to join without a link😭
How can you join a server?

Its sad adv didnt release this... They literally released so much stuff (good and bad...)
Will you talk about the lost Saban English dub of Tonde Buurin under Super Pig?
It's quite weird cause, i think the Portuguese dub came from the spanish dub and there is NOTHING, linked to an English dub, the dub was pretty faithful to the original so to me it's quite weird thinking that it could come from a potential English dub
this is great keep going hehe
I could have sworn I watched the dub
1:10 omg whats the background music 🎶 is plz 🙏
It's "Koi Wo Yumemite" from the first season of Mermaid Melody I believe
@RosieVisionTV thank u 💓
idk if it could come out from the company that did the spanish dub since its not up to watch in any streaming platform or dvd (just reuploads from the tv emission days) + we dont even have the ost in spotify.
maybe if we can make the spanish dub available they could reconsider to upload the english one(?
Financial incentive after dubbing the whole series... Oye vey
Can you do lost 4kids dubs please? 🥺
No
@dwainsimmons3447 what's wrong with you
I'm thinking of covering Mew Mew Power and Magical Doremi at some point honestly. They exist, but didn't last very long.
@@dwainsimmons3447bro that's wasn't your channel and stop being so rude
I grew up watching it with Hebrew dubbing. Still know the words to the songs♥
פשש ישראלית (;
Hoping it gets found
It would have been great on Cartoon network
thats crazy. wow
If they have the scratch tracks... Why havent they released it????
👀
I normally watch episode 1 half in sub and half in dub to determine which voices I prefer, for example bungo stray dogs I prefer dub over sub, but demon slayer sub is 1000% better.
cool
I was obsessed with this show when I found it on RUclips. Luckily my school library had the entire manga series and I finished it in a week. I would love to rewatch an English dub of this show. 🥲
