    Where/how to watch
    Children of the Whales is a Netflix licensed anime, not a Netflix original. It aired in Japan in Fall 2017 during the anime slate of that year. Now you can watch it worldwide on Netflix in the original sub (which is really good) or the following dubs:

    Series Description
    Chakuro is the 14-year-old archivist of the Mud Whale, a nigh-utopian island that floats across the surface of an endless sea of sand. Nine in ten of the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been blessed and cursed with the ability to use saimia, special powers that doom them to an early death.
    Chakuro and his friends have stumbled across other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a human who wasn't from their own. One day, Chakuro visits an island as large as the Mud Whale and meets a girl who will change his destiny.

    This anime was different. It touched and moved me deeply. It's complex - on the surface it feels pure and innocent, but as you dig deep you discover twisted truths and a darker side you did not expect. This darker side gives it depth. I also found myself getting attached to this beautiful yet scary world. This has never happened to me before, I'm quite a passive anime-watcher in general. But this......this was something special. I will cherish this anime in my heart for a lot of years to come.

    I rewatched this anime using a different literary lens. The children of whales are revolutionaries hunted by a fascist imperial superpower. The ships they lived on represent their ideologies. The mud whale represents revolution-the yearning to change. Revolution devours its children, that’s why the Marked offer their lives to the heart of the mud whale. Meanwhile, the ships of the fascist empire feeds of emotions and memories, that’s why the villains of this series are in constant denial of guilt by revising history in their collective consciousness. They are numb. They feel nothing when they kill. They systematically forget the feeling of any remorse for what they do. The addiction of fascist regimes is forgetting. That’s why they feed their people with things that would make them forget of their humanity. That’s why Chakuro, the hero of the story is an archivist. He holds on to the memories of his people-he must tell the story to ensure the future generations never forget.

    See, people have been calling it boring. Mostly because they don't actually understand what's going on, and yet haven't paid attention to each and every word these characters say.
    Every word in this anime is importation, yet it's obvious people haven't listened to all the words. It's a story resembling something I love, like ponyo.
    The story can easily go over people heads, and they will lose interest.

      I listened to every word and binged watched it two days. I just finished it two minutes ago. But it’s not good. Lol it’s pacing is slow and I feel like the animation was cheap because they used a lot of still images and the fight scenes weren’t really extravagant the deaths were predictable and characters weren’t fleshed out for the emotional appeal. Like the guy petting people’s heads was a random character and the he died the next episode and I was like ok...so.

    If you really think about it, this is really the best Idol anime of 2018 so far.
    But also I definitely agree with you on pretty much everything. It's not a bad show but it's definitely not perfect. I feel 12 episodes wasn't enough for this adventure. There's a huge world and it's politics they expect us to understand in such a short time.

      Defos, I did really enjoy it. You can tell a complete story in 12 episodes, it can be done brilliantly but it's really hard with fantasy because you're trying to progress plot & characters & world build it's too much in a short space of time!

I want the past to be revealed and action to be taken in order to counter the problem they are facing. Crying and talking about emotions is good to set to mood but repeating this constantly to emphasize the mood of the anime can cause it to get some what tedious making you want to skip to the parts where useful information is being revealed

    I don't understand why people say this anime is cliche or boring or bad.
    Having flaws does not make something bad. As soon as I watched this series, I was curious to see how new it was, since not a lot of people seemed to be talking about it. Apparently, people don't like it. This confuses me, because, sure, it is a little rushes sometimes, but while watching it, I had no trouble following it. To me, it felt less like a perfectionist's perfectly structured story, and more realistic. In life, you don't always get the time to be comfortable with everything and everyone before people start dying, and bad things start happening. Life doesn't wait around like that. And sure, this anime and not life, but still. When watching, I was fully immersed in the story, the art, and the music, because all of it was so interesting and great, at least for me it was.
    A lot of people are too quick to over criticize, over analyze, and be nit picky perfectionists that can't handle a bumpy ride. This was probably my second favorite anime of this year, and when I see so many people hating on it, saying they couldn't make it past episode eight, I wonder if we were watching the same thing or not. Of course, different strokes for different folks, but still. I have to wonder if my taste in anime is really that bad, or if it's something else. Sorry for so many words. :3

    • @SomeOne-eo7rw

      I really liked discovering the universe and it's lore. A small isolated community with no knowledge of the world isn't a completely new concept (Future boy Conan), and the boundaries of what we call human have been explored too (Galaxy Express 999, both on emotions and life's finiteness). What I found very interesting however, is how informations were visibly retained from both the characters and from us. Understanding the lore was very interesting, and if there is another season, I hope they will build a world as intriguing beyond the Phalena's sea.
      Visually, it was a great experience too. The sea of sand? Gorgeous. Same for the flight of the Star Locusts. As the commentary points out, the scenes in the alternate reality have breathtaking visuals (similar to FMA, Code Geass or The Promised Neverland).
      However, I feel like the anime has problems that can hardly be overlooked. We don't get to know many characters, and even the ones we should be attached to are shallow and even annoying.
      The friends of Chakuro for instance (Masoh ~) were meh to me. The guy died? Ok ig.
      Same with the soldier petting everyone who joined the attack of the Skylos. He died? OK!
      I *appreciated* Nibi's death because
      1 -It was cool
      2 -He was getting on my nerves.
      I think it was meant to be a sad moment, but it failed.
      Lykos was THE character that had to have torrific development. That was dissapointing to me.
      This video analyse the problems with Liontari quite well too.
      So the characters lacked development.
      There was also a lack of consistency with people from the empire clearly having feelings, and some from the whale lacked some (although it could be unexplored lore).
      But the worst thing to me was combat. While satisfying combat can exist without a groundbreaking story or deep characters (Demon Slayer) a great story can be ruined by the rotten combat.
      The Jesters were worse than stormtroopers. Slower than crawling civilians, unable to fight children that were just crying on the ground... Ok, the main characters have to make it for the sake of the story, but this was plain ridiculous (Ep 3). It ruined the sense of danger, and made the empire so much less threatening...
      This is why I think the anime left many of us dissatisfied. It could have been so much better if more time was dedicated to making more lovable characters! It felt rushed. I More engaging and dynamic combat scenes would have helped too, IMO.

    As much as I like the series, if there's one glaring element that has gotten under my skin, it's the ever-present "bystander syndrome." There's an abundance of staring, talking, and monologuing when, logically, action should take place. Such things have broken my immersion very, very often. Although I can generally understand it from inexperienced villagers, it's painful to watch supposed soldiers act like they've never stepped foot on the battlefield. I've had moments when I thought; "Oh, it's a good thing that the soldiers are insanely polite enough to let the main characters have a heartfelt discussion, or they'd be dead." I've had my fair share of downright yelling, "stop monologuing and get your ass moving," as well. I don't know... I get the feeling that the writers lack experience in handling action sequences.

      That's the exact point of it all. The inhabitants of the Mud Whale (not including Ouni) have always lived a non-violent lifestyle and they hide their emotions (like the no crying rule). It even said how it was logic vs emotions. That's a huge point of the series about how these people naturally are peaceful bystanders. They don't belong on a battlefield

    • @Phenrex
      @Phenrex 5 лет назад +13

      Dirty Dan Yeah but you missed how they mentioned the s o l d i e r s who are heartless and have no emotions just chilling multiple times throughout the show so characters can monologue/give feelings of encouragement. If anything, the soldiers should have killed unceremoniously most of the main characters by the end of the series because most of them have this happen at least once.

    • @japaniamanga3191
      @japaniamanga3191 4 года назад +5

      @@Phenrex Yeah i felt that too! I think this show is very beautiful, mysterious and poetic, but the battles were boring and didn't make any sense. Like you said, the soldiers are supposed to be experimented ones with no emotions, but most of the time, they just stand there with their weapons and wait... It doesn't make sense and it doesn't feel real... I think this part of the show could have been much better if it would have been more realistic with real actions... Also, it is true that we don't really get attached to the characters because of the lack of backstories... I had hopes for the villain with pink hair, but after we saw his backstory I was like... uh that's it... Man I don't get this character and something about him is off... Also, the new crew that appears at the end of the serie is kind of pointless... well i get why they are here, but they don't really do anything... I thought their goal was to invade them and transform their land into a more civilized one, and i thought it made sense and was a good idea, but at the and of the show your like... that's it... What i trully loved about the show was the world built around it and their cultures and tradition and the secrets of the elders and stuff... But, i still have a mixed feeling about this show!

    marathoned it all in one day, LOVE the art and animation like literally it's too freaking beautiful to look away from
    setting of the story is great too, very similar to nausicaa of the valley of the wind tbh (surrounded by sand, big alienlike monsters that u coexist with, trying to find out the secret of why the world is the way it is, etc)
    major character design is a okay, some characters feel unique and original and some feel like an archetype (the voice acting is also superb) the disappointing parts is how rushed this story is and how little character development there are, the amount of content being squished into 12 eps really could've been stretched across like 30 eps to properly expand on all the arcs; dialogues in general feel bit cliche as well but it's not too bad
    Overall I'd give it a 3.9/5, I really want to give it higher given how much I loved the art and animation and overall concept but the way the story got rushed was a big buzzkill for moi >

    I haven't watched this anime yet but I've read up to volume 8 of the manga (REALLY looking forward to the release of the English translation of vol.9). I've seen many people complain that the plot felt rushed and that not enough answers were given by the season finale, but I didn't feel that way reading the manga series. I think it's a case of the first season of the anime only really covering the introduction phase of the manga series.

    To me, this was one of those Anime I really wanted to love. It was beautiful, like you said, with the art style pulling me in more than most. The soundtrack, too, was nice--and the first episode set things up in a way that made me very curious about the anime's world.
    Where it lost me, though, was in how rushed everything felt after this; I never grew to really know any of the characters in the show, so when they died I didn't really care. Contrast this with another sad Anime: Wolf's Rain. In that one, you grow with these characters, learn who they are, their dreams and what makes them tick. They evolve, learn, and then... it gets sad, and you get sad. The enemies annoyed me to no end, as well--they were supposed to have surrendered their emotions, yet the only named character that shows this is Lykos; the others are all angry, or sadists, and while Ryodari's cause was explained, it came a little too late for me to really care.
    I'm obviously in the minority in this--just looking through the comments you can see that this anime tugged at a lot of hearts, but for me it was a beautifully designed disappointment. If we got more episodes to learn about the Whale, and to establish the characters and bring more depth to them before the villains arrived, I would have been far more content with it.

    • @cam8524
      @cam8524 4 года назад

      I agree with your review. The comments about people crying their eyes out geniunely confuses me cause I am usually the type to cry at sad scenes in anime but I felt nothing at every sad scenes in this show lol A lot of the scenes confuses me and I repeat them over 3-4 times to try to make sense and the battle scenes just makes me mad at how the soldiers just give the main characters a lot of time to think and do nothing while killing everyone else in seconds. I guess this anime is just not for me. I really wanted to love this show as well, the way the anime was introduced in episode 1 pulled me in with its amazing graphics and soundtracks. The setting was pretty cool and unique to me also but everything else after that lost me :\

    I"m not quite done with the season, but omg I LOVE the art and animation. Gorgeous. Also, that music they play right when things are about to go down always gets me hyped lol. One thing I can't figure out is why they call Chakuro "The Destroyer". The characters bring it up occasionally, sometimes almost in a lighthearted manner, but I don't understand what it means. Why do they call him this? The only thing I can think of is that Chakuro's thymia seems to be super potent when used defensively or to defend others but I don't think that's why. I think I missed something (I enjoy watching this show while kinda stoned, I think it's better that way, so that might be it).
    Also, are Ouni and Nibi supposed to be romantically attached? I think they're best friends, but idk it seems like they are, for all intents and purposes, romantically involved even though they don't make over displays of affection (e.g. kissing, touching). They seem to love each other very, very deeply. I don't want a lot of anime so I don't know how (or if) homo relationships are common or if they're generally implied.

    • @Midnight.Creepypastas
      @Midnight.Creepypastas 2 года назад +1

      1: They call Chakuro „the destroyer“ because he can’t really control his thymia. E. g. in the beginning, he was asked by some kids to cut off some bamboo leaves. He accidentally cut off, like, half the tree.
      2: Friendship is often portrayed as something very intimate, especially between guys. Nibi and Ouni do love each other, but not in a romantic way. A friendship like this is a little unusual for the genre but not for anime itself. However, there are genres that are about boys in love and also boys making love.^^

    I agree with this review. This series tried to pack a lot of arcs into just 12 episodes so you feel rushed between peaceful moments, dramatic moments and then a conclusion that still begs questions more than answers. For the most part - the storyline is compelling enough for me to really get into it as its just different in a good way. Character moments are all over the place and while there are some stand outs, you'll easy see them one minute and gone the next due to the presence of deaths in this series. Overall, I hope they have a season 2 to finish off the rest of the arcs and series because I believe its still ongoing, in terms of the manga series. The soundtrack definitely is awesome and one of the great highlights of this series especially the opening/ending theme songs.

The premise was neat, but poorly delivered. The characters died before you could care about them. They seemed to pull new characters from nowhere even though they are on a secluded boat. The fight scenes make little sense. Its a mess of show that feels like a film that was edited poorly.

    It's sad that the reason these animes are not so interesting is because they are given a set amount of episodes that they have to wrap up by. That doesn't just apply to this anime but sooo many others it ruins the anime and makes it feel rushed likewise the opposite when writers take too long to introduce the Characters and form a bond with them and the watcher.

    The sense of urgency is terrible at sometime.
    Death everywhere* let’s talk and joke on the enemies ship.

      I took that more as the innocence and naivete of the people. They had not seen war up until that point - they were hopeful and optimistic instead of jaded and pragmatic. This is how I feel about Nibi's death - he was so confident nothing could stop him and Ouni because of their friendship and love, only to be brutally cut down

    I really loved this anime and it's artwork and espeically it's SOUNDTRACK holy cow the music was beautiful! Although I wish it could go slower with characters, but hey it's a really good anime. If you feel like crying go watch this. It throws a lot of emotional scenes at you. Also I love Sami, and Rochilizo (i have no idea how to spell that)

      I do, I plan on checking out everything. I watch at least 3 episodes of everything released in a season and then stick with however many I enjoyed
      This season I have stuck with 22 shows (although I am dropping 2 of those because I'm not enjoying them!)
      Spring has a lot of sequels coming out! I am very excited for Boku no Hero S3
      And thank you very much I hope so to!

    Do not watch this wanting an Action Anime or you will end up not enjoying it too much the MC is a guy who cries and writes. He pretty much for all of s1 does nothing but that. when a fight breaks out and you think he might use his powers. lol nope he is going to get out of it by crying and plot armor. Watch it for other reasons as it has great artwork and music.

    I really enjoyed the anime, and I'm wondering if I should pick up the manga? Does it flesh out the characters more?

    • @IslaMcTear
      @IslaMcTear  6 лет назад +2

      The manga is still on going and does flesh out the characters a little more than the show although the show does a good job of making the manga come alive! A lot of the scenes are the exact same which is lovely

    I really enjoyed watching it for the most part. I didnt feel like there were any characters that got left out, except for maybe the protagonists best friends, who are kind of just there. The animal was also kind of dumb because it was totally irrelevant until episode 10 or something. Those are the only real problems I had because the art was amazing and I enjoyed the concept of emotion vs power. The main antagonist not being part of the show until the end didn't bother me too much because I think it sets him up very nicely for the second season. But tbh I like almost every anime that doesnt focus on fan service because it makes me not ashamed to show to friends. I fucking hate fan service
