Part 1 (1982) here: • John Waters (& Divine)...
Part 2 (1983-86) here: • John Waters on Letterm...
I love how John Waters' suits all get snappier over time. Watched all the Letterman interviews, from '82 to current. If only Divine could have lived to enjoy his stardom, and be that mega star he always wanted to be. Divine was actually a real sweetheart of a person. I know John misses him a lot.
He was the face of YSL last year.
I miss his 70s work
Loved Ir
There's nothing better than a person who's weird and has the self-awareness to know they're weird. That's John Waters' charm.
Waters so owns himself and his taste, what an amazingly confident person.
And witty!
The friend he was visiting in prison was former Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, serving a life sentence (with possibility of parole) at the California Institution for Women in Chino CA for her involvement in the 1969 Tate LaBianca murders. She was not involved in the murders at Sharon Tate’s home but participated in the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night.
A national treasure
Early on here...his defense of murder
"Everybody has a bad night!"
That's something Hitchcock could've said
aw i love how he defended traci lords and said her story wasn’t funny, he’s great
It was Leslie Van Houten
from the first video to here we watch the guy liking john more and more
John Waters is a national treasure! I thank God, this original crackpot, is ours!
"Car accidents... are the best place to pick up people." I really thought he was going somewhere else with that.
"That's Sonic Youth! I love them. That's great." :)
I loved "Hairspray" when it first released. It was absolutely awesome and the movie theater was sold out.
Thanks so much for all these clips. John Waters is a legend. Too bad he seems to have retired as a filmmaker.
He alway seems to be a genuinely nice guy.
I heard that he has political aspirations these days!
@@cappsginny699 no way. He is far too smart than to want to get involved in the political mess that exists today
I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I just heard Paul and the band play Thelonious Monk.
THANK YOU for putting these together!
Love seeing their friendship evolve
John Waters is so wonderful.
I love John Waters. The real deal.
Thanks again!
"That hasn't been in a Sam Shepard play" That line is so fucking funmy.
I think the touching the mustache thing comes up in a recent interview Joe Bob Briggs had with him on Shudder. He mentions how Letterman would never touch it.
John is very charming!!
“...and boys that just stood on the corner and spit all day.” 😂😂😂
More than a traffic violation! Miss you Dave, John Waters is authentically awesome, as always.
I think that he was talking about Leslie Van Houton
Yes, he was.
Thanks D.G..really interesting!
25:34. Holy cow. Foreshadowing "Serial Mom" with Patty Hearst, white shoes after labor day, and John Wayne Gacey's girlfriend.
I'm guessing the new project that hadn't been cast yet which he couldn't mention was "Serial Mom".
Dave likes John as a guest♥️
Yes, you can see Dave is really engaged and amused by John.
John is 73 now. Hard to believe.

February 24, 1988 6:57
December 16, 1988 19:42
April 6, 1990 35:02 (Sonic Youth had been on promoting Dirty
OMG...Cry Baby...Hail Mary Full of Grace!...great movie
I NEVER SAW HAIRSPRAY ORIGINALLY BUT SEVERAL YEARS AGO AFTER READING ABOUT IT I HAD TO SEE IT I WAS NOT DISSAPOINTED I WAS LAUGHING SOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pink Flamingos was by bvb far his best movie. And by best I mean demented, sick, trashy, and overall bad taste, but in a tasteful way
John was visiting Leslie Van Houten in prison in California they were good friends. ☝✌
He must have been referring to Leslie Van Houten (... "Everybody has a bad night!").
of course i came here for Mr Waters , but i totally wouldn't mind seeing my all time fav Sonic Youth performing either - they _are_ NY's soundtrack
Also: calling his rejected sequel an "abortion" 😅
“Every one has a bad night.” ... even mass murderers can be nice when they feel like it.
"That was a rush"
At 2:50 ... friend in jail for life ... I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Van Houten girl she was one of Manson's girls .
The Don Knotts Story, i know what i wanna see now.
How 'bout that band
Jon has made lotts fine movies. I wish he would come out with a couple more movies. But if he doesn't feel it, Jon won't do it cuz he is a true artist of filth. I would love to go to a movie and vomit again. Just like in the olden of Midnight Movies.😵😰😰🤑😵😰🤑😵😰🤑😵😰🤑😵😰🤑😵😰🤑😰😵🤑😰😵🤑😵🤑😰😰😵🤑😰😵😰🤑😰🤑😵😱🤑😰😵
He never promoted lust in the dust
Although Divine and Tab Hunter were in Lust in the Dust, John Waters was not involved in that film.
Funny!
Looks like Steve Buscemi and Don Knotts had a love child.
Don't forget Mr. Peepers, Paul Rubens( Pee Wee Herman)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣♥️
I think John is handsome. He appears to be about 6'5" tall, stays slim & is always well groomed.
the band did not play an intro
They never did back then. Only for stand-up acts.
I think the friend in prison was leslie van houten
I miss Divine!
I get the feeling Letterman didn't like John waters.
He would not have had him on as many times if he didn’t.
Maybe you should watch more dave interviews lol. I can name people he didn't like. John waters wasn't one.
Tracy lord almost screwed the adult business up.
She was an exploited child, and that's your concern? I hope you don't have access to any minors.
