I've played guitar for the last 50 years and owned a few different ones, Yamaha LL6, Yamaha Classical, Ovation Balladeer, etc.I had friends with Martins and I always wanted one but would not purchase one as I didn't feel deserving of its greatness. 2 years ago I bought a new J-40.... It changed my world, my playing, my interest in practicing as well. What a lovely piece of art. I will die with this in my hands! Thanks for the review and your playing Jon.
My J-40 was a revelation. It made me sell my beloved first Martin, a D-35...it was so much better in every way! It also led me to order two custom Jumbos - one Sitka/Mahogany and one Alpine Italian Spruce/Rosewood. My original J-40 was sold because I wanted wider string spacing at the saddle (2 5/16" versus the standard series 2 5/32") for better finger picking. Then, recently, I was fortunate enough to be offered a lefty Martin HJ-38 - Wow! What an amazing Jumbo! It takes everything to "11"! Martin's Jumbo model (and the M-36) are truly overlooked gems.
I had one…’91 year model. My son has it now. The sound is so BIG and warm. Bass runs really rumble. Strumming the cowboy chords just sounds amazing! My dad had the m-36! The m-36 body is not as deep and it has a 3 piece back. My bother has that guitar now.
I've got a collection of 9 high end Martins, all Lefty's - and my M36 and J40 are two of my favourites. I cannot understand why they are not more popular as they sound fantastic.
I think they’re less popular because they’re newer models for Martin. You’ll notice that Martins most popular guitars are those that were introduced in the 30s and 40s. Guitarists are a fickle lot and tend to gravitate towards the traditional models. That said, I have a J40 and love it!
Jumbo guitars are the kings of acoustic sound. Their tonal span is enormous. J40 shimmers, so much so, that when it's strummed, it sounds like a 12-string guitar.
Hey brother!! Thank you for this video review!! I wanted this guitar 2 years ago but wasn’t ready to buy it. Then I started researching all the high end Martin’s since my recent family members have always played them. This guitar always spoke to me. After Watching your video I was sold!! Now I have purchased it and I should be able to go pick it up tomorrow. Had it shipped from Texas! Thanks again man.
I have had this guitar since ten years with the former Martin tuners, not the reimagined and am very happy with its lovely sound and feel. This is a great guitar. If I was to have only one Instrument, it would be this one. Thanks for the video.
Love you playing. thanks for the video. with nothing ever in stock this has become the only way to get a feel for different models of a Martin I may want to pursue
Jon again a great review on this Martin J40! I do take all your reviews very seriously. You are most thorough. I would like to get any negatives you see or hear. Most of the time you do but sometimes I feel you are skipping over somethings. Best in your RUclips Chanel and keep up the nice work.
Hi Michael.. If the guitars have like really substantial negatives, I won’t be doing a review at all. I have sent guitars back because it would be hard for me to bring out the best in them. The only flaw in this particular guitar is the price!✌️❤️
Wow bro you are one heck of a player and I must say that this is my dream guitar. I am a solo performer and it sounds appropriate for any kind of music. And I do everything. I have been playing a yairi Alvarez gy2e for years now and I actually have two of them but it's outdated MK2 600t Electronics and it's time for a new guitar. Your video has single-handedly convinced me to get this guitar and I'm going to get it with electronics installed at the factory.
Love your playing Jon! You really make a guitar like this sing. Martin has a real beauty here, no doubt about it. It's not cheap, but I think the sound justifies the price. If I played a lot of acoustic guitar, this one would definitely be on my radar!
I tried a used one by chance, loved it. Went to learn more and found this video. I then found an online store that sold it cheaper than the used one I found hah. I now own a J-40. It's a crazy nice guitar. So easy to play. I hear things I haven't noticed before, and I exaggerate them, and it gives new patterns ect, I wouldn't have otherwise found. The 1st string is very close to the edge of the thread board. Apparently I have a tendency to slightly pull the string, so 1 time I had the string go over the edge. I have to work on that.
@@JonIsJustTooLoud RUclips suggested I'd buy you a cup of coffee, gave roughly 1/940 of what I payed for the J40. 939 more cups of coffee and you can buy one too!
I’m no 1, I’m no 1, I’m no 1 😂😂😂 You really can’t beat Martin Jon. This is another superb guitar. Nice to hear you’re using the lap steel it all sounded wonderful 🙂❤️👍👍
I purchased a 1995 J40 in 1995. I have purchased quite a few guitars since then but nothing else really compares. My other favorites are my Martin 000 SM and my 95 Guild maple jumbo 12 string. Love the jumbo/000/0000 shape.
Just found your channel, subscribed immediately! I am torn between a J40, D35 or an OM.... I need a do-it-all guitar, mainly strumming and soloing with the flat pick but that can handle some fingerpicking too, what would you suggest me? Thanks!!!
This guitar is exactly the same as an M-36, except the body depth is deeper like that of a dreadnaught and has nicer appointments. Also, the M-36 is one of the few Martin guitars that uses a combination of ebony fretboard and rosewood bridge. In the past, they used ebony for the bridge, but turns out the lighter rosewood makes it sound more balanced. I really like the J40 too! It's hard to find these to try but if I see one in the wild, I'm definitely playing it for a while! Thanks Jon for the review!

Sir in your opinion. Which one is the best all arounder for all playing genres?
M36 or J40?
This just may be the best sounding Martin they make. Perfect playing to highlight the tone and clarity of the J-40.
Thank you

I own a early 80’s model J40. It draws looks when I play it around other Martin owners. In volume, string separation and sustain, it’s a beast!
Thanks!
Thank you Tony ✌️❤️
It sounds beautiful! I love my J40 so much as well.
Nice

Has that Martin ‘family’ sound that their guitars have … but just bigger, rounder and with more sparkle 👍
Yep✌️❤️

Do you prefer this to your D35?
anyone else have thoughts on choosing between these two guitars?
I actually prefer my D35.. but I really don’t mind having this too..😂
Thanks so much. I am looking at one selling for £1700 at the moment
