Gail Albert Halaban | CAMPO Artfest 2020

The work for CAMPO Artfest is part of a larger series called Out My Window. Before going to bed, my kids and I wander through our New York City neighborhood and watch the lights turn on at dusk; window by window. Together we make up stories of what’s happening behind the glass, attempting to connect with others. These urban walks have inspired Out My Window. I propose to reveal these private moments by making images of people in their homes inspired by their neighbors’ accounts. With the magic of technology, I am making photographs with Zoom screen sharing! I am able to photograph all around the world - sometimes even in a single day! Although I could never synthesize the entirety of what it means to understand one’s neighbors, I aim to bring this project to every continent in the world to create a fuller picture of what that might look like. With this work, I break down the borders between neighbors and connect people all around the globe.

El trabajo para CAMPO Artfest es parte de una serie más grande llamada Out My Window. Antes de ir a la cama, mis hijos y yo paseamos por nuestro barrio de Nueva York y vemos las luces encendidas al anochecer, ventana por ventana. Juntos, inventamos historias de lo que sucede detrás del vidrio, tratando de conectar con los demás. Estos paseos urbanos han inspirado Out My Window. Propongo revelar estos momentos privados tomando imágenes de personas en sus casas inspiradas en los relatos de sus vecinos. Con la magia de la tecnología, estoy tomando fotografías a través de pantallas compartidas via Zoom! Soy capaz de fotografiar en todo el mundo - a veces incluso en un solo día! Aunque nunca podría sintetizar la totalidad de lo que significa entender a los vecinos, me propongo llevar este proyecto a todos los continentes del mundo para crear una imagen más completa de lo que podría ser. Con este trabajo, rompo las fronteras entre vecinos y conecto a personas de todo el mundo.
