When I visited Japan a few years ago, I had the honor of experiencing a tour of a similar type of building. Even more amazing was the Great-Grandson of the man who built it, gave us the tour and spoke about his family history and what it was like living there. This was in Osaka, and I can’t recall the name, but I would love to re-visit it.
Architecture and gardens, you made my day! ^__^ About Western gardens, if it's true that French and Italian gardens are quite formal and symmetrical, English garden are all about tortuous paths in "seemingly" untamed nature where symmetry or geometric shapes are no factors (except for the buxus labyrinths, because you always need an exception or two xD ).
The instrument is a Koto. I was going ask in a comment, but went and looked up Japanese Stringed music instruments and BANG! found a list. I found some music on RUclips. That was easy. Arigato.
I'm happy that I found your channel, Shogo. You make very high-quality videos and convey information with little bias other than comments on the relationship between tradition and modernity. Thank you for your work, sir.
Thanks for your continuing videos on Japanese culture and historical buildings The garden and the building are beautiful Thanks for the explanation of things in the building Keep it up Big Thumbs up 👍
The sound of her playing the Koto is so dreamy and haunting at the same time. It's beautiful. This entire video was full of beautiful things and messages! 💖💖 I needed this today.
Most enjoyable 😎👍 THE best place to learn everything about Japanese history, life and tradition. Subscribed and never miss an episode. Thanks for all your dedication Shogo-San 😎👍❤🖖
its always really great to listen to someone knowledgeable and excited. even when they have a more reserved manner their respect for the art and culture still shines through
Amazing and fascinating video, Shogo and Tomoko! I actually felt myself relax imagining the garden and all the Zen elements! I think this would be awesome for mental health. Letting go of all your preconceived notions and worries and letting the nature surround you! You are way better than the History or National Geographic Channels for Japanese culture! Thank you!
So much history and beautiful designs 😍 Shogo would you like to cover the history on the Koi fish and the significance it holds to Japan sometime? :) I find Koi fish so beautiful and fascinating. :)
Thanks to you I'm already planning to go visit Kyoto as soon as is possible (next year or 2023!). Definitely will visit this place, it's so beautiful and full of peace and meaning, thank you Shogo-san!
Konnchiwa! I just wanted to say that I love your videos and really admire the way you explain Japanese culture. I have a humble request for a video. As I would like to train with a bō. Could you please make a video on the origin and culture of bōjutsu. Arigato gozaimasu.

Thank you so much for the virtual tour 😊 I would love to visit such building one day if I ever go to Japan, it's a big dream of mine The zen mindset, the respect for nature and the 4 principals of tea ceremony truly fascinate me. I love how they hold a huge importance in the traditions and the culture! Once again arigatou gozaimasu Shogo-san!
Beautiful video and what an amazing experience being in that Machya Shogo-san! Thank you for helping teach us some thing about them. Would love eso modify my house to look like this Next year.
It was lovely to see the architecture and gardens. By the way the performer of the Koto has admirable skill. While seemingly simple it is quite challenging to maintain music and flip the sheet music at the same time. It's why I get so annoyed with music books because they are always so awkward to flip mid song!
エエエェェ(°ロ° )ェェエエエ Shogo-san when did you get over 500k subscribers?! I swear the last time I noticed it you were at 250k and now you're more than halfway to your goal!
Impressive! Something that makes me curious is about cleaning. I mean, everything is natural in there, and there are some lovely antiques too. But dust may enter the ambient naturally, so the cleaning would have some wearing effect over the years. Even so, everything looks quite pristine (at least through the lenses). Oh, I really want to spent a time in Japan someday...
Wow!! That was an amazing video, thank You. I so much liked the respectful and polite manner between You and the guide. I love this part of Japan's history. Wish You merry Christmas (if You celebrate it).
I so much joy watching your videos there's so much to embrace and absorb and inhale I would one day love to go to an authentic Japanese restaurant I guess / tea House I would love to see the geisha dance and listen to their beautiful music is there anything in New Jersey?
LOVE the all the wood in the interior. All of the vertical pieces of wood in there are likely place "as the tree grew" to honor the way the tree made the wood...Sashimono don't use the wood "up-side down".
What Up Shogo, thanks for the great Content. I was wondering if you have ever thought of doing a video on the Art of Bonsai. I'm a Bonsai Artist in the USA, of +15 years. I want to make a pilgrimage to Japan one day to visit the most famous nurseries and sites for bonsai and its associated Pottery Arts. I've obviously seen most if not all the content out there on the subject, but i thought it was a topic i was surprised you never covered.
here we go again, another knowledge that will surely blown my mind as if I wasn't blown by how much japanese culture I've been knowing thx to shogo,#1 like for shogo=1brain cells will multiply in order to increase my understanding about japanese culture 🙇♂️🙇♂️
I dont want to be rude but at 8:03 i do want to say that the locking that he put for the fence my break easily.I meant if there is any strong wind the wooden hoop would break it or any intruder would just pull it up.

While it's clear that the expat is quite knowledgeable as it's his job, I'm pretty sure a Japanese would have known what that "round thing you put on the gate" is called and a local, even if he didn't know English and Shogo needed to translate would have known more and made this video look more authentic. It's that authenticity I'm looking for on this channel. It's what a Japanese experiences when he goes to a Machiya. What an English speaking tourist experiences, that I already know or will eventually know when the pandemic calms down. Please get Japanese guides next time, in the end, as tourists we can have the experience you just shared in this clip in any tourist trap we might access, but we can never be treated as locals and well, learn to act a bit more like one when we can finally get there.

It’s weird watching a foreigner introducing Japan to a Japanese. Respect tho
Is this a Japanese only tea house? If it is cool. Respect. Is he a alpino red eyes hybrid?
Ichigo - Once in lifetime, Anime Bleach main character's name is Ichigo (in English). Are they the same?
Is the City of Kyoto the Owner? That is, is this Kyoto City Public Company? Or is it Privatly Owned?
For me, this should be Owned by Kyoto, or Japan!
Is it me or have you been posting a lot more
This gaijin knows more about Japan than the Jap does.
I find it ironic that Adam-san (Gaijin) explains to Shogo-san what Kyo-Machiya is.
What song was being played on the koto at the end?
I dont want to be rude but at 8:03 i do want to say that the locking that he put for the fence my break easily.I meant if there is any strong wind the wooden hoop would break it or any intruder would just pull it up.
The garden is inside the house, that garden fence is just decorative.
Can I ask you something what's hagibana mean?
meanwhile my brain: how much does a tatami cost, and do I have to replace it if I spill the tea
This is like a Westerner showing an Asian guy how to use the chopsticks.

“Ohhh… ahhh… wow… ohhh… ok… ahhh… huhhhh…” 🙄
Those poor girls forced to wear those shoes and lay with their necks breaking :( I wish the sexism in other countries would be worked on
