My wife and I were flying into Chicago Midway for our first time. An older gentleman sitting next to us asked if we had ever flown into Midway. We said no. He replied.. "Well, the runway is shorter than most. So the pilots will try and set it down right after they clear the fence." "So sometimes it can be rough." We thanked him for the heads up. Well, talk about a smooth landing?!! He looked at us and said that was the smoothest landing ever! It was!!
Great depiction of a typical MDW landing on 31C. I was on a SWA flight across the aisle from a couple young ladies who apparently didn't waste any time in the airport lounge before boarding--they clearly made good use of their time, if you catch my drift. Neither had ever flown into MDW before, and both actually assumed the brace position as they were certain we were landing short of the runway. They managed to stop hyperventilating by the time they deboarded but were still talking about how close the plane came to the McD's arches on the way to baggage claim, LOL. The old circling approach to 22L was my favorite. Rarely do you get to experience that sort of bank angle that close to the ground.

Not saying that the runways at MDW are too short, but locals tell me they always know which runway is in use by watching vultures flying in circles just beyond the takeoff end of the runway.
In USS Midway you kind of need to do a firm touch, only a mile long runways in the mid of city and a hump with runway crossings. Southwest has the best 737 pilots from all of the world.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one I guess. After that landing they might want to check the landing gear in the wing support system…. because that was not a landing that was a slap down.
One reason my instructor told me to always check the tires on the walkaround preflight, after a non- greaser like that there may be some bald spots on the tires. And after a landing like that hed kid me and say we may have to pay two landing fees.
That landing was a little rough but after that first hop the pilot got the plane down firmly but safely. I’ve had rougher, most notably in KSAN, KSLC and KDEN
The weather was indeed great. The landing was probably more due to MDW's short runways than the weather. Honestly, this one kind of caught me off guard because the weather was so good. Thanks for watching my friend!

Short runway at MDW Every flight is put down and full brakes and reverse thrust. It’s always always the same. These guys really try to make it comfortable for all aboard. Have a great day.
Chicago Midway Airport is the busiest square mile I know of. It never disappoints. This landing here looked to be quite bumpy, and Chicago weather is dynamic.
That wasn't even close to being a rough Landing I remember going from sna to DIA early winter there was a delay and I knew something was wrong before my flight took off from John Wayne I didn't want to go but I had to be there tomorrow morning well I took the flight and sure enough when we got to Denver the weather was bad so bad that the plane was rocking so hard everybody was quiet as a mouse except for the babies on board and I'm surprised that we actually landed after we did they close the airport I didn't want to go I had a feeling that was bad
Sounds like a rough flight. I've had some like that that you can see on the channel here. Ones that, even I, with 750+ flights in the last 10 years alone, wasn't sure if we'd make it. Bad thunderstorms were usually the culprit on my flight though. As for this landing, I'll agree the approach was very smooth, however, the landing was not. The rough in the title is in reference to the actual touchdown during landing. So, we can disagree on that part if we have too, but it was a pretty rough one. There was virtually no flare, and the wing bounced back in the air like 5-7 feet when the wheels touched. My cameras are very nice and they do a great job smoothing out rough turbulence and landings, but any time the wing and camera moves around that much with my equipment, it was rough. Thanks for watching!
In my experience they’re usually not quite this rough hahah. Where a flap fairing nearly smacks the pavement. But yes, it is more normal to have more firm landings at MDW. Thanks for watching my friend!
It was firm but otherwise a great landing for Midway. It's clear this pilot was really concentrated on trying to get it down on the main touchdown markers. I'd be willing to bet the first officer was flying this leg. Those -800 haul a## landing there so any kind of crosswind 10kts or greater there pretty much guarantees a sporty arrival in one. That's the reason I only look for -800s or Maxs when going there 🤣 The sad thing is I've had harder landings on Atlanta's much longer runways LOL!
You know what they say... Any landing you wan walk away from, is a good one. At least that's what my instructor told me when I was working on my private license many years ago. I'm not sure the person who later that week bellied a Beechraft Bonanza without the gear deployed would agree haha.
Yes it was. One of the roughest landings I've had in awhile. My camera does a good job of smoothing things out with it's built in stabilization, but this was a pretty rough one. Thanks for watching man!
Not much room to really have a smooth flawless landing bc of how short the runways are. So most of them are gonna be firm. That's also a warning to anyone who has never flow into this airport before.
That is correct. It wasn’t the roughest of all time; but it was rough enough to be one of the tougher ones I’ve had in the last year or so. The camera, with its built in stabilization, often makes it look smoother than it was. So, if it looks rough on camera, it was 5-10 times worse in person.
Oddly enough, it didn't LOOK Like a rough landing, as the aircraft was going down & down, turning as it approuched the runway. Huh. I still liked the video presented.thank you. by, by....
There's a reason why I don't label many landings as rough or hard. The big problem now is that cameras are so good, that the built in stabilization often makes rough or hard landings look not as bas as they were. Which is great for the pilots haha, but I tend to avoid using those terms. This is one of those instances where I can assure it looks better on the camera than it did in the seat of that plane haha. Thanks for watching my friend!
Haha. Not even bad. The roll was a few degrees. This can be seen by the wing tip/horizon orientation. Great visibility. Although uncomfortable, not dangerous. Way worse at night with limited visibility, weather, and a low ceiling.
For a long time I was terrified to fly. Then I read a poem titled "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner", and I've been ashamed to show any fear about flying since. I'm still terrified, but I try to hide it.
No, it’s a next generation, 737-800. I assume you’re seeing the split winglets and thinking it’s a Max, but the 800’s can have split winglets too. Also, this is Southwest’s old livery, from 2001…. Well before the Max even existed. I promise, I know what I’m flying haha. This is an 800 😁. Thanks for watching my friend!
I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. It can be a rough landing and still be fine. There definitely wasn't any butter with this landing though haha.
No matter how many times you get into a plane, to me, flying is still a mechanical miracle!
You and me both my friend! Thanks for watching!

He definitely came in hot on final.
Yeah short runway + crosswind landing = put that puppy down fast
that was "rough"?
Makes it all the more fun haha.
That was like a Ryanair landing!🤣
I guess they don’t call Chicago the Windy City for no reason
Rough landing??
That is correct. It wasn’t the roughest of all time; but it was rough enough to be one of the tougher ones I’ve had in the last year or so. The camera, with its built in stabilization, often makes it look smoother than it was. So, if it looks rough on camera, it was 5-10 times worse in person.
Yep..."USS Midway"...(aka skidway)
RIP Highland Park
Coming in and out of MDW is like be attached to a crotch rocket! :)
hard landing
A rough one for sure. Thanks for watching!
Them pilots ain’t playing winds want play last min pilots like nah not having it
Yes, amazing. How I'd love to take Jules Verne on some banal, average flight.
You can always tell when a military pilot is landing the plane L o l
I thought it was the game
It's the very good Real Life Simulator 2022. They've made some great improvements since the 2020 version. It had some virus.
@@sla31 yes, virtually no lag
That is not a "rough" landing at Midway.
You’re wrong, it definitely is. Thanks for watching!
I bet ord offers better landings
Way too fast!
1/10 that’s full on Ryanair
it's boeing 737 Max 8
No, it’s a next generation, 737-800. I assume you’re seeing the split winglets and thinking it’s a Max, but the 800’s can have split winglets too. Also, this is Southwest’s old livery, from 2001…. Well before the Max even existed. I promise, I know what I’m flying haha. This is an 800 😁. Thanks for watching my friend!
noting wrong with that
I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. It can be a rough landing and still be fine. There definitely wasn't any butter with this landing though haha.
Looked normal to me. If you watch video of the pilot as they are landing, they are pulling on the controls like a cop throttling a crook.
