Great advice, as always! My favorite way to learn is: "here is a concept/rule, and see in the following techniques how this principle applies", as I am way better at learning principles (and then seeing them in action, to understand them) compared to learning specific-but-unrelated-(by-principle) techniques.
Yeah I think it works great, concepts then example in action. I also like showing systems too as I think they are critical to getting good. It’s just about knowing when to use systems vs principles to evolve
1. I love this format of video. 2. In general this channel is the one that works best for me. No idea why but so many usefull tips i got from here during my journey :) 3. Yes, a bit of Judo, please :)
I really appreciate how you explain your concepts and principles. My wife is a teacher and she's the exact same way. Two people can teach the same thing, but it's how the better one explains it that differentiates and really get people to understand.
Solid video as always! Good info. I really like the idea of diving when they pull. Some many coaches still preach strip grips, which isn't a bad idea, but you don't need to strip every grip. Some can be used to your advantage.
Sometimes stripping grips is good, but the idea that you need to break all grips in my opinion is not accurate or realistic. You have to pass you can’t deny them from ever grabbing you, you have to concede a grip at some point and learn to pass through it for sure.
This was great! Everyone says that relaxing when defending is much easier (which is true) but I had never seen it shown for offense. This is really really good, will start implementing intentional relaxation on offense starting now!
Yeah you have to balance it of course you need tension some times, but when I can relax muscles a bit right before a big attack you can feel a huge difference in your explosion
Great video Jon! When you start to use this low tension principle so many passes and subs open up, and as you say it’s also great for energy efficiency. Would really appreciate a “drop pass” video as well in the future 🙏
Thanks for the explanation of this low tension principle. The best rolls that I've had were when I was unconsciously relaxed. PLEASE make a video on drop passing.
Thanks for another great video! Been using your collar sleeve stuff for awhile and was happy to see a few more details on that. Since you asked for future ideas, how about some attacks that pair well together using the push/pull dynamic?
Applies to judo, too. Very often your own arm tension creates or maintains the distance you need to bridge to enter for a throw. My old sensei would often yell, "Relax your arms," (with a Japanese accent!).
Very interesting video, you sometimes come across this phenomenon where people will become tense in anticipation of certain moves etc. Perhaps an easier example is people flexing their neck the moment your choking arm goes around them from the back, if it's wise to do so, you can keep the position, but save your "squeeze" for the moment they have stopped tensing. almost like a boxer going for a body shot on their oponents "In" breath. Another example is sometimes when you relax a little, they will follow, thinking they have the opportunity to also relax..and at that moment you spring back into action, at the opportune moment. Great video!
This is so high quality! Thanks a lot. Have you had a problem with people reacting to this? In my gym some people are okay with hard/competitive rolls and as long as you're not spazzy most things are fine. But if a round starts slow against the 45 year old guy who never competes, and I suddenly slam my thigh into his neck for a triangle...I understand it if he's surprised and/or reacts negatively. I suspect the solution is "common sense", but am curious as to whether/how you approach this in normal training.
I think you can do this fast without making it particularly violent or having to hit them hard, but of course you can choose who you decide to use it on
Theres nothing that gets me more stoked than a cup of coffee, sunlight, and some morning Jiu Jitsu after some videos namely Jon Thomas based smart technical serious DOPE SHIT lets goooooo $LINK #CCIP
Thanks so much means a ton! I’m not the best editor yet but as I learn I feel I can better communicate what I want, so happy to see you are enjoying the work,
Years of studying BJJ and I've never seen anyone talk about it in a video! Fantastic! Great info!
Yeah I try to identify really small things that I make huge impact, sometimes it’s really small stuff like this we all do but don’t think about.

Awesome video. Opens a new perspective.
Thanks buddy! Also been using push pull mechanic a lot which is super powerful for creating over reactions, gonna do something on this soon too

I always felt others using this on me and couldn't work out exactly what they were doing. Now I know! Thanks👍
I watch a lot of vids and you're the best.

Drop passing? Sounds intriguing. Can't wait to see it
Yeah I’m excited to make that video, such a powerful principle I have been using it so much recently
Great info keep it up
Thank you!
Super interesting theme, i need to (I will) incorporate it deeply in my game. Thank you from a blue belt !
Hope it helps, it’s such a small thing you can really add to so many situations
This video was great, I will keep this in mind.
It’s such a quick hack you can use in so many situations, I made immediate progress in so many situations when I started using it
That loop choke... Nearly took his head home
Haha yeah it hits quick!
Awesome video. Definitely interested in a drop pass video.
Coming soon for sure!!
Thanks for the explanation of this low tension principle. The best rolls that I've had were when I was unconsciously relaxed. PLEASE make a video on drop passing.
Yeah it’s crazy how much just relaxing and trying less actually makes you perform better
Simply aussom video. Thanks so much!

100 percent gonna be doing something on push pull soon! Been using it so much recently. Especially on reverse meg drag and Toreando
Pretty good concepts
Thanks!
Great video. Muy bueno. 👍
Thank you so much!
Nice vídeo , Thanks

Absolutely judo guys look like water with their arms when they are fighting sometimes
like it? I love it :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Happy to hear it! Enjoy making the videos for you guys
Love this..
This was great 😮
Thanks buddy!
Loved this video. Thank you. But the spazzy white belts are here too, you know. I wonder how many of these drop passes will turn into faces elbowed.
Well maybe I should put disclaimer to be careful in every video. Hope they can be sensible when using this stuff
It seems this Jon guy really knows what he's talking about

Yeah this principle is really useable in so many more situations than I listed, will be fun to see why kind of impact it makes on everyone’s game
This is gold.
Thanks so much!

Fantastic video, do you apply same principal to No Gi ? yes to drop pass instructional. 🙌 💯

What size Gi do you wear? Also what’s your height and weight? I have a similar body type as you and really curious. Thank you! Much love from hawaii!
Hi John read art of learning? ( Josh waitzkin)Could apply many concepts/ principles into bjj
A little bit a long time ago. Good book
sometimes, because of surprise, its so easy i dont believe it
I know it’s really shocking how fast those triangles can hit

Drop pass is game changer man, honestly I think it’s one of the most important principles to understand for high level gi passing
YES ON DROP PASS
Looking forward to making it!
Do you go to swedish bjj events?
I was recently coaching at one in Molndal
@@JonThomasBJJ nice I hope I meet you one day
Again, I have commented this before on your videos, how is this free to watch 😅?!
I want to do bjj but I’m out of shape and I’m a little big lol an im a little scared
Just pick a good gym in your area they will be nice in introducing you. People are excited to help new people come in
I very much like your technique... however, in a street fight, you had several opportunities to poke them in the eye.
wrong. the tap is the most powerful weapon. you can get out of any choke or submission just by using the tap.
Hahaha true
