The exposure is not set automatically for the videos on the a33 (unless it's in auto mode). You cannot change it while recording but the camera will use whatever settings you set before pressing the video button. So you have full control over the exposure !
The Sony A33 speaker is awful. That was a shocker, their higher end models have very good mics. I have the A57 and I love the fact that I can pay half the price for Sony lenses because I don't need IS in the lens. For you aspiring film makers, Canon is the right choice because of not cropping in video mode, side battery access, and magic lantern hacks. You can automate lots of time lapse and focus effects where you'd have to manually do it with a Sony. I love my A57 but a T4i or 60D would be better for photo quality, just slightly. So that that from someone who's done it with both.
His last comment about number of lense options did not consider that the Sony camera takes all the superb Minolta, and related after-market lenses for minolta camera, that were produced prior to Minolta selling out to Sony. He said Canon has been in the camera business longer and thus has more lenses to chose from. Fabulous review. Really let's you be able to consider the camera that meets your need.
@Andyax A couple things that you forgot to take into consideration. In 60P rolling shutter becomes almost a non issue. That is 720P, but for web videos that won't make a difference. I use the T2i for filming Skateboarding and motocross with little RS. Also, the video quality is not equal. Take note than in all the A33 shots, it flattens the difference between darker and lighter shades. As a film maker, it would be a struggle to not be able to sharpen the difference between shadow and light.
@swisstristan2000 I will tell you straight up that if you are trying to use the camera for film making then go with the 550D. The D3100 is no where near as well suited for shooting video. The 60P option alone is very well worth going canon.
hey, nice review! just dropping in to comment on the manual controls on the A33. yes you can have manual control for video, but you lose out on the autofocus. Go to manual mode, set your aperture, shutter speed and ISO, turn off the autofocus (at the body and/or lens) and press record. it will record using the values you set. try it out! cheers mate!
It's pretty clear that the 550D kicks ass, I got my Rebel T2i last week or whatever. Still I can't seem to the right picture. Color correction does help a lot.
Nice video, A few weeks ago I bought the Canon 550D, partly through your videos on this camera, and I am very happy. Since I am a musician and not have problems to put music in my videos, it was important to be able to shoot good footage. After this comparison video i'm still very happy with the canon 550D. Manual focus for me is really necessary if you want full control over your videos. Therefore, the 550D better already.
I wouldn't quite say video quality is equal. On a few of the indoor tests they where equal, but most others I enjoyed the A33 video much more. Colors seemed more vibrant and the white balance with the cigarette lighter was amazing.
Thanks for this excellent review ! Both are good cameras with their respective strenghts and weaknesses depending on user priorities, as pointed out in this video. I just purchased the EOS 550D and feel confirmed in my choice after this comparative review. Very enlightening and complete.
Thanks for this great review. With the a33 can you at least pre-set the aperture, shutter speed, & iso before you switch to video mode, or is that not even possible? P.s. I'm one of those English speakers who appreciates you speaking English in this review ;)
Thank you. Excellent review. I will have to shoot tango dancers in quite low level conditions. Do you think the A33 could follow these dancers without jumping from one couple to another. I tried with Canon but it is almost impossible to keep focus.
@a1mint I think like the video states, it depends what you are using the camera for. The 550D for me wins hands down due to manual control over the image, auto exposure is a huge no no for taking video. Auto focus also is not a problem as anyone serious about filmmaking wouldn't use an autofocus anyway. Don't get me wrong,I'm sure the Sony is brilliant for casual use and image stabilisation is sorely missed on the Canon, but if you want to make films, get the 550D.
very big thanks for this video!!! But as for me, quality of Sony is better, and autofocus do picture more professional. Also - plus of Sony is turning display.
If you can learn to live with a few limitations, the A33 is an extremely powerful filmmaking tool (in the hands of right people). The T2i is better in many respects but has serious issues with usability and speed. Canon should stop gloating and unleash more power in their entry-level cameras. And for all those nagging about A33's manual control in video, the A33/55 DOES have it! I will soon post a video tutorial on how to take full control of the A33 and create some compelling footage.
@BoxxyFan Now you also mention histograms. The 550D actually has a live histogram on the LCD when in live view. Saying it's for "amateur/beginners only" when the A33 has gimmicky autofocus is dead rich.
@a1mint I was talking out of these two cameras. As for talking about autofocus with kids and pets, like I said, that's not what I'd use this camera for really. I don't understand how you can say only I would like it? I mean it's universally praised as a brilliant camera for the price, and for movie mode it's exceptional. BTW I have used it, so I'm not 'imagining' this. The 550D with the right lenses is an immense piece of kit.
I bought the a33, Im new at filming so the auto focus sounded nice, how ever is there any way I can turn it off? and also, what settings is the best for recording, is it Auto or can I experiment in som way? pleas help me some one :)
@Andyax just got a question, im starting filmmaking and can't decide between nikon d3100 and canon 550d , im a total beginner what's the best camera for me?
@MrLTFilms If you've been doing professional cinematic filming for any length of time and have done your reading, then any "auto" feature should be turned off anyhow as much as possible. Buy a follow focus kit and use that with the manual focus on the lense. It's not that big of a deal and is in no way a deal breaker. It's just like the video said, although the autofocus is nice, it depletes the quality of the picture.
Owner of this video didn't spend much time with A33 obviously. You don't have to Lock the exposure by holding down the AEL button. You can change the settings from toggle to pushON/pushOFF it is in the menu. Also you can stop auto-focusing by a switch on the lens, or temporarily lock auto-focus by preview button under the lens. So you can do the out-of-focus exiting scene. I'm not even mentioning that you can switch manual focus at all :) Also you can change every option about video.
Nice Review... and.. the 550D has also the ability to use Battery-Grip ^^ And the Tamron 18-50 2.8 VC is better for Focussing (internal focussing and bigger focus-ring).
I am not a dSLR owner yet, but since the 550D has no autofocus, you have to constantly adjust the lens manually for focusing, correct? I am looking to get a video capable SLR but starting out I'd have a lot of problems w/out an autofocus during video.
@a1mint thank you so much, now I am realize and I have decided my choice, Canon 550D seem more vauable and saving more my mone, I can buy more lenses with this. but I can't stop dreaming the special 10fps burst from A55, OMG....!! LOL do you have any idea how much the max limit of Shutter Count from A55 and 550D? tq
@MrDasjoerd I've chosen the Canon because I want a good camera for photos but I also want the good video features, and that means the manual control and focus of canon's. I thnik both have great features but I thnik the Canon let you be more involved with what you are creating. My doubts were in the features in the video mode of the Sony, and I think I prefer the canon controls and audio quality over the speed, effects and autofocus of Sony. :D
@BoxxyFan IS is built in on the Canon T2i and also it will last a lot longer because it doesn't use a 'like.no.other' SLT system. The SLT mirror will last about 2 and a half years at the most and cause your images to be grainy. I am not a huge Canon fan myself and am thinking of buying a Nikon over the t2i. Photography is my passion and I want my camera to last me a lot longer than 2 and a half years. Don't you?
Coul you share the SD memory card that you used for 550D and exporting workflow presets VBR or CBR some details if you don't mind.... I'm currently using premiere CS6... Honestly you really show an impressive image quality even at 360p Thankxxxxx in advance
@editedbyfailure Sorry mate. Canon is for amateur/beginners only. Don't get me wrong, the canon is an okay choice, but Sony has more advanced features such as an EVF (live histogram) and actual in body stabilization (not the more restricted in lens stabilization).
So, I had a Canon EOS550D and last week I buoght a Sony SLT A33. My experience is worse with SonyA33 , the quick AF sometimes unnecessary, always f3,5 at video mode is a wrong solution ( sometimes need any depth of field ) and the interlaced video at 1920x1080. Much more better Canon's progressiv video.
Is there a time limit when recording videos on the t2i and if so what is it? If there is can i record one one card and keep switching to different cards to record longer?
@BoxxyFan Yeah, it lacks progressive full HD, slow motion in 720p, as wide a selection of lenses, mic input, manual video controls. That makes it so much better right? Oh wait, no it doesn't.
the sony looks good and so does the t2i...for action shots i think sony wins but cannon may have better manual control of shooting....could be wrong....it also seems that although canon is the standard along with nikons....sony is rising and so are pannys....i'll take the sony a55, but also considering the panny gh2 for its video quality.
@NightsirK Except 7 fp/sec VS 10 fp/sec, no noticable difference between A33 VS A55. @ nidschki, you have mini-jack for external microphones like a pro camera (of course not symetric but for that price...), so what is a problem? You can use dedicated microphones for video and plugin-it on top of camera using the flash grip. @ reddragon9918 well, the only difference is -1/3 of IL due to the translucent mirror, what else? The A33/A55 can feet every need, not problem of that.
I'm a Canon user for many years, but this «test» is a joke. I just tested both cameras (A55 Vs EOS 550D) and the Sony is far better in many aspect (pro like). Total control through the EVF: WB in °Kelvins w/wo bracketing, AdobeRGB, superb colour, in-body stabilization, HDR, 3D, extended flash feat. such as: High Speed Sync, Rear Curtain, Fill-in, Wireless, 10 fp/s.. So I don't want to switch because I don't want to sell all my lenses. But WOW, I will confirm that Sony is on top, now. Mitch
@BoxxyFan 404 not found. Actual professionals (not idiots with DVCAM camcorders) who make movies use external LCD monitors. On shoulder mount cameras, there is no option but to use viewfinders (viewfinder attachments are available for the 550D) but if you're serious about DSLR video you will be using a rig of some sort with a follow focus, decent primes and external LCD.
@swisstristan2000 not really, i like the full manual control, like he said in the video canon has been in the industry for a long time and has more lens and stuff like that, i wouldnt choose a sony dslr becasue they dont have as mcuh market share as canon or nikon. i own a t2i/550D and absolutely love it
my experience with A55 is 10 minutes of video , first time ,then it overheats real quick . And Canon 550D 30 minutes , and does not overheat , so i dont know what this info in the video is , my XP is reversed .
@BoxxyFan Don't you mean 100mm? But yeah, they also have a shitload of normal zooms with IS... 24-105 f/4L, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (kit lens), 18-135mm IS, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 55-250mm IS, 70-200 f/4 IS etc etc
The background noises while capturing sound really bad. They are much more annoying than the hearable AF, I think. I do want this camera, but that loud and disturbing static noise keeps me away from buying the A33. What's the sense of gorgeous Full HD filming when the audio quality is that bad? I currently have a Panasonic TZ-7, compact camera, and its audio track is free of any background noise...
I tried the 550d but I picked the a33 over it. AF performance is much better and it has one of the fastest live-view screens on the market today plus a tilting lcd and that makes the Sony great for video as well as stills. In the end, the photographer creates the image, not the camera, so you cant go wrong with any camera you purchase.... You won't be more creative cause you got this camera over that camera, it doesnt work that way.
Hello everybody.............perfect review. Anyway, I am decide to buy one of those two cameras for video shooting weddings and probably I will buy SONY. A reason is because SONY has AF and CANON no ! This a big advantage for cameraman ! And SONY had better colors than CANON. Its true that SONY had worse sound, but anyway I wanna buy ext. mic. IN SONY I see a big disadvantage that if you shoot video and you have stabilization on, than you can only 9 min shoot in lenght, but I speak about A55.
The exposure is not set automatically for the videos on the a33 (unless it's in auto mode). You cannot change it while recording but the camera will use whatever settings you set before pressing the video button. So you have full control over the exposure !
I really like the home-made tests you put in there, some of them more useful than you can find in other professional reviewers.
Cool dad, too.
The Sony A33 speaker is awful. That was a shocker, their higher end models have very good mics. I will be getting the 550 d as a young film maker. Andy you are my role model, you have amazing films. Hope to be like you some day :) Amazing Review!
@TheBierwas
im pretty sure you can, theres a manual focus option on the lens
His last comment about number of lense options did not consider that the Sony camera takes all the superb Minolta, and related after-market lenses for minolta camera, that were produced prior to Minolta selling out to Sony. Excellent comparison review of these two cameras. Keep up the good work.
This was an very good comparaison! Really useful! Thanks a bunch and keep up the great work!
Very good comparison. I love your videos Andyax keep them coming.
Well done. Nice job with the comparisons.

Great video. What would you recommend between a t2i and a r42 or any other cam in the similar price range?
EXCELLENT JOB ON THE VIDEO
Great demo of the image stabilizer pros and cons and all other features are presented very clearly. Thank you!
Really good review,
I love your work!
I have now a Canon EOS 550D

You can turn of autofocus by setting it at manual focus instead. Its that little button thingie on the side of the lens ;)
@a1mint You can also control the Aperture at A mode, I can shoot at f1.7 with my minolta 50mm lens as well as f4 and so on
I'll go with Canon. I definitely think that Sony is putting up competition though. Great Review.
Excellent demonstration!
great test Andy ^^
i love your work
keep going bro ~
@BoxxyFan Now you also mention histograms. The 550D actually has a live histogram on the LCD when in live view. Saying it's for "amateur/beginners only" when the A33 has gimmicky autofocus is dead rich.
T2i conquers, as expected :)
Great review, Anders. Very concise and detailed.
great comparison man. very informative video
Very nicely done review!
I use magic lantern hack on Eos 550D. It makes the camera alot better then before. Cause it has more functions now
@a1mint I was talking out of these two cameras. As for talking about autofocus with kids and pets, like I said, that's not what I'd use this camera for really. Other than the cost of lenses (which Canon has more to choose from) what difference does it make if the image stabilizer is in the body or the lens??
Great review, I like my 550d alot. I thought the autofocus on the sony while handheld was a bit distracting, it doesn't know when to hold fous.
I bought the a33, Im new at filming so the auto focus sounded nice, how ever is there any way I can turn it off? and also, what settings is the best for recording, is it Auto or can I experiment in som way?
pleas help me some one :)
@Andyax
just got a question, im starting filmmaking and can't decide between nikon d3100 and canon 550d , im a total beginner what's the best camera for me?
What a nice review! You did that very well. I'm glad I bought the Canon 550D :D
Veldig bra jobba! Personer som deg hever kvaliteten på youtube!
GREAT REVIEW~! could you do a review on the same cameras but on the camera side of the two models.... quality of photo's etc :)
Excellent review, thank you so much, you answered all my questions and freed my mind. Again, Thank you.
Is that true? how to enter to manual
settings?
Seeing after 2012
Nice Review... and.. the 550D has also the ability to use Battery-Grip ^^
And the Tamron 18-50 2.8 VC is better for Focussing (internal focussing and bigger focus-ring).

thank you so much, now I am realize and I have decided my choice, Canon 550D seem more vauable and saving more my mone, I can buy more lenses with this.
but I can't stop dreaming the special 10fps burst from A55, OMG....!! LOL
do you have any idea how much the max limit of Shutter Count from A55 and 550D?
tq
Very nice review !
@MrDasjoerd I've chosen the Canon because I want a good camera for photos but I also want the good video features, and that means the manual control and focus of canon's. I thnik both have great features but I thnik the Canon let you be more involved with what you are creating.

@Andyax thanks alot i'll probably go for the 550d
btw your videos are amazing
@swisstristan2000 go for the 550d the d3100 has it's problems and the 550d has a mic input, great for filmmaking
Thanks for an awesome review!
Well, you actually have manual controls, WB, aperture, exposure compensation on sony A33, you just have to shoot in manual focus =)
@editedbyfailure Sorry mate. Canon is for amateur/beginners only. Don't get me wrong, the canon is an okay choice, but Sony has more advanced features such as an EVF (live histogram) and actual in body stabilization (not the more restricted in lens stabilization).
Well done. Perfect review ever watched.
er det bedre med begge deler(stabiliserer linse og innebygd stabiliserer)?
Nice review! Thank you!
So, I had a Canon EOS550D and last week I buoght a Sony SLT A33. My experience is worse with SonyA33 , the quick AF sometimes unnecessary, always f3,5 at video mode is a wrong solution ( sometimes need any depth of field ) and the interlaced video at 1920x1080. you should get the sony a55 and compare with your 550D
Is there a time limit when recording videos on the t2i and if so what is it? If there is can i record one one card and keep switching to different cards to record longer?
Great Video. Thx alot.. Men i searched for 30 minutes to get to your video..
@BoxxyFan Yeah, it lacks progressive full HD, slow motion in 720p, as wide a selection of lenses, mic input, manual video controls. That makes it so much better right? Oh wait, no it doesn't.

@maddoxkiddo which one you have chosen? i'm still not sure
Perfect review! Thanks
can you focus manually with the standard kit lens for canon eos 550d ? :P
Great review ...Thanks Andyax
@NightsirK Except 7 fp/sec VS 10 fp/sec, no noticable difference between A33 VS A55.
Mitch
3:10 what lens you use at that ? its looks very filmmik i tried and tried but cant get results like that..it looks like 5k film
@unir00 You do realize this is not a test of the A55, but the A33? Slight difference there.
Can you manually focus while filming using the A33?
@BoxxyFan 404 not found. Actual professionals (not idiots with DVCAM camcorders) who make movies use external LCD monitors. @swisstristan2000 not really, i like the full manual control, like he said in the video canon has been in the industry for a long time and has more lens and stuff like that, i wouldnt choose a sony dslr becasue they dont have as mcuh market share as canon or nikon. i own a t2i/550D and absolutely love it
Hey Andyax, can you review the EOS M3?
my experience with A55 is 10 minutes of video , first time ,then it overheats real quick . And Canon 550D 30 minutes , and does not overheat , so i dont know what this info in the video is , my XP is reversed .
superb review, kudos
SO If I get a different lens for the canon I can turn on auto focus?
@BoxxyFan Don't you mean 100mm? But yeah, they also have a shitload of normal zooms with IS... 24-105 f/4L, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (kit lens), 18-135mm IS, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 55-250mm IS, 70-200 f/4 IS etc etc
How about A55 VS canon 550d vs Nokon D3100??
in picture and movie side?
thanks
Very nicely done,
THANX!! thiis video was veryvery helpfull!!

@unir00 bear in mind the a33/a55 is a slt camera NOT a DSLR. Slts don't last that long if you don't believe me google it
@MegaLimera1n How? Its a nice full size.
would a33 be good to film skating?
