I used this tent in the summer in Alaska for a month long road trip. Mosquitos in Alaska are not a joke. Never had an issue with the tent being buggy at all. In fact it was an island of calm after cooking dinner on the tailgate even with a thermocell going getting eaten alive. Did not expose it to Carolina rain but what rain it did receive ( all night a couple of times) there was absolutely no leaking. I used it solo so it was palatial for one. Can't agree Luke, I would recommend it from my prospective.
I agree. My experience has been mainly very good. My only complaint was that in colder weather, with a bit of rain, condensation was terrible. Mainly because it's a single wall tent and you can't open a single screen window when it's raining. Also, the size takes up half your car haha.
I’ve seen very mixed reviews on this tent. But when it comes to camping, I don’t want to play the lottery. I think it’s best to buy from a company that offers a reliable product.
Agree 100% I've had this tent for 5 plus years and never had any of these issues. Only dislike is the doors but been a great tent. I know they changed something with these a couple years ago so wondering if manufacturing was part of that. T3 was discontinued for a bit and the new color showed up.
I have the T4+ its an amazing tent with almost none of the issues he describes. Great air flow, the + does have a huge front door which is one of the reasons i chose over the standard version. Had it in major rains with no issue of leaking . As long as you put the floor in correctly bugs aren't a big issue, no tent is completely bug proof. As well Every tent manufacturer over sells the person count.
I am a camping guide for a women-centric outdoor organization. I have had two of these - the original T3 and then I upgraded to the T3X when it came out because my cot fit better with the extended length in the X. Luke, both of my tents were early purchases BEFORE Gazelle had what seemed to be supply chain issues. They were “sold out” of their tents for a LONG time. I’m gonna guess that these QC issues came about in their scramble to restock, cut costs, and increase production. I love my T3 and my T3X. I have recommended this tent to MANY solo women car campers through Girl Camper because of the quick set up and the stability of the tent in bad weather. I have never had ANY of these issues in cold weather or hot weather camping. I’m so sad to see the decline in quality. I guess I will have to stop recommending this product for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the detailed videos on these current issues.
So glad you made a review! However, i already made my purchase about 5 months ago. I purchased the T4 plus Hub Overland edition. Price was high, but it met the needs i was looking for. This is a HEAVY tent but i camp close to my truck. It certainly takes longer to assemble than 90 seconds especially due to its size. But there is a ton of room, easily fits four cots plus gear. I think most of us know when a tent manufacturer states how many people can fit we must expect it to fit at least one less. Rain and winds has been great, and it does not have the open holes or loose threads that you experienced. Even with the T3 you had that allowed bugs to crawl in. I used it this past February with low temp of high 20’s. I ran a buddy heater with two of us and had zero condensation and stayed very warm. I’m so far extremely pleased with the purchase. Thanks again for your review!!
I have 2 Gazelle tents, the T3x and the T4 plus. I have to say, I have had good experiences with both. The T4+ is giant-DEFINITELY a 2 person setup. I love it because, as we camp close to the truck, its big enough for both of our cots, plus gear-and the front room is set up like a porch, and we can cook in it in a pinch if needed. The T3X is great for one person, plus gear. Two people, it can be tight. But, I have not had any of the issues you experienced, and have used them for a few years now (T4+ just started using last year)
Im going to open up here by first saying I respect your channel and have been a long time follower for several years. Iv never commented to your videos much (if any tbh) but this particular one made me feel obligated to do so. Please don’t take offence to this but more as a constructive criticism. I am an avid camper that has gone through 20+ years of gear testing and experience but regardless of that, I can admit my experience is nothing close to yours, however…. Over those 20 years between car camping, hammock, canvas, inflatable etc…. My opinion’s of the Gazel product line couldn’t be more opposite of yours. After many years between tens and car camping I made the jump to the T4X as I am getting older and wish to spend more time relaxing and less time setting up. My T4X had all the same “minor” concerns your T3x did however I did not find them to be anything of a nuisance that you did. 1) is there a quality control issue? Absolutely there is and it’s clearly visible when you set the thing up, however the loose threads and not perfectly lined up zipper covers being a deal breaker on if this tent is acceptable to the Outdoor Gear Review channel is completely ridiculous and frankly not in line with your character that iv come to know of this channel. 2) is there water penetration? Yes, but incredibly minor amounts that any basic camper would have no issues with so long as they can recognize in heavy rain storm situations they should be prepared with content placement and elevated sleeping conditions. You completely ripped this company apart with incredibly bold statements about its poor construction and control on water penetration when in reality and in my personal experience through total rain downpours this tent is actually a better performer then most products in a similar class. The tent leaks, yes… but iv never owned a single tent (unless military grade) that didn’t. 3) your holding this tent to a standard of excellence based on its price point while although mentioning it, but not truly focusing on its price point being in its design to accommodate quite possibly the fastest set up process in the industry. The tent is designed like nothing else on the market. The next closest competitor is a inflatable 4 season that typically sells for $3000 on a basic 4 person sleeper. Your review of the T3X I found shameful of your style and usual approach and is not the channel I have come to know. 4) you mention several times about other viewers reaching out to you on their disappointments on this product. Again, through my experiences and based on my own research with other owners I feel you have cherry picked these negative opinions over what are likely very limited complainers vs the actual demographic of truly satisfied Gazel customers. I own a T4X as well as a T3X and have had nothing but pleasant experiences with both over the years. Yes they have quality control issues but I have never seen any of such issues be anything worth cutting down the tents worthiness, if a few uncut threads and not perfectly lined up zipper covers upset some campers, then perhaps those campers would be best of in a Hilton hotel. The water penetrations i and many others have experienced are completely acceptable and frankly below that of most tents and the products end reliably and construction quality is not bad. I love your channel and am excited to see more, but I just hope you can be a little more realistic and reasonable in your future reviews as this one made you come off as a real princess on your expectations of camping gear. :)
I think his point was its cheap chinesium of mediocre quality. Poorly designed (errr copied) doors and no vestibule. Lots of downsides and not good value for the price. I own one and it’s far from great. I use it when I don’t feel like carrying a RTT or a small backpack tent.
In another video review of the tent, it is in a torrential down pour for most of a night with very heavy winds and the next morning he finds a single half dollar size pool of water. (Not to mention he doesn't even go inside the tent to check it out while it is storming) and he rips the waterproofing of the tent. I'd say that pretty damn good considering the conditions. Hard to take this guys review serious for that alone.
I have the T4, maybe it's made better because I have zero issues with mine, it's been 100% waterproof even after 4 days of nonstop downpours. My favorite thing about it isn't the quick setup, it's the quick teardown! Folding up the tent and shoving it back into its bag is a breeze. I also really like the ceiling height, I'm 6'2" and not having to hunch over is really nice.
I've had a gazelle 4 for a few years and I love it. The 4p is plenty tall enough for me to stand up and walk around even with a queen size air mattress inflated in it. It's been a game changer for overlanding with my wife. The 4 is perfect for 2 people plus 2 dogs and lots of gear and a small table. We can easily set up our tent/air mattress faster than our friends with a rooftop tent (one of the ones that folds up).
I have a t4 plus, what I love about it is that it sets up quick, it’s spacious, it packs easy and has plenty of storage. I love that it doesn’t flap in the wind. I didn’t realise that quality was such a big issue with their tents, I thought my issue was a one off, one of the poles on the top is longer than the rest and for that it always stands kinda tilted. I did realise that it doesn’t ventilate as well as some of the reviews say it does. All in all though, I do not regret buying it. I enjoy using it, fast setup/pack-up was a priority for me.
I have the T4 Overland Edition, And I don't have any issues with mine, camped in the pouring rain, No problems at all.. Like you said, this tent is not for everyone. Small folks will have a issue with the weight of the tent, it was never meant as a lightweight tent.. For my experience's... Its worked out perfectly.. Good luck and thank you for the review
I`ve had the T4 for approx. 5yrs and love it. It`s sad to see the quality go down hill. I`ve had this tent set up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during pounding thunderstorms with hail and high winds every night for 3 days straight and no leaks. It appears there is quite a bit of difference between the T4 and T3`s size and quality. I appreciate your review because i thought might want to downsize but i`ll stick with what I have. My wife and i fit nicely with our 60lb. rescue dog and 95lb. Great Dane.
I’ve had my T3 for three years and it’s been an awesome tent. I will say the door can be a little tight at times. But because of the camlock system, that’s as big as a dork could possibly be. But it’s held up in death Valley with Highwindsextreme Highwinds. I’ve been in the high Sierras no bug issues or condensation issues. So for me, this is absolutely an awesome tent.
I have owned this tent for 3-4 years. The only issue that I have experienced is the corners not having a good seal in which ants paraded in during a thunderstorm. I put gorilla tape in the corners to seal them. At the time I bought this tent there were no other pop out tents like it. I guess there are more options out there now. Never had water or condensation issues or problems with air flow. It's quirky but I still like it and actually bought the 8 person version for family trips.
This is very odd to me. Obviously, the OutdoorGearReview is very credible, but my experience with this same tent has been the exact opposite of this review. Nothing but positive things to say about it. We've used it many nights, several in heavy rain with no issues. The stitching looks solid and no issues with bugs either. We bought one right as they were released so perhaps the quality of the product has gone down since.
Have the t4-plus for a family of 5. Love the size and the ability to set it up super quick for such a large tent. The plus has a door that is very easy, so that is not an issue for us. We have only used it in dry, desert camps. I definitely agree with the stitching and tiny holes being a problem for such an expensive tent. I also agree 100% that I wish the floor was not removable. The gaps are big in the corners and I've tried to adjust without much success. I worry that scorpions or the large desert spiders may be able to get in.
I just got this tent. I really like this tent a lot. Zero bugs zero rain getting in i would have to say this was worth the money for me. Still respect your review but cant agree on this one. Thanks again for the great review
I get it. Will you be providing us with a better alternative? It's good to know the weaknesses of one's kit. My T4 has not seen too may downpours, so water has not been an issue...yet. I love the "rip-away" floor. I don't have a problem with small creepy crawlies getting in the tent. The Velcro on the floor allows me to run a power cord into my tent when I have an electric site. I can stand up in my T4. I am too old to sleep in a ground tent with an air mattress. I use a cot. Keep up the good work. Love the reviews.
I have the T4. The only con are, the weight, packed size, & ventilation during heavy rains. I generally end up camping solo, because everybody backs out at the last minute or brings their own gear. More than enough interior space, quick set up & take down, & bone dry in torrential rains as long as you keep the windows closed. I’ve used it twice for week long camping trips. I experienced high winds & heavy rains and the tent stayed rock solid. Love it.
Polarizing? In all my years camping and overlanding, I have yet to meet a person that disliked this tent. And i have seen tons of people with this tent.
Great review. I love my T3 tent, got rid of my trailer with roof top tent and went with this. Much easier to set up and overall a great tent. Can't say I've had any problems with construction/quality or with it being waterproof. Do agree on the ventilation, the mesh is pretty tight.
I have the t4 and I love the setup time to it. I do admit that it has an airflow issue but I think with all of the windows and doors open it’s not that big of a deal. I have woken up to a lot of moisture before but I think the trade off in set up time is absolutely worth it. As a dad that takes his kids out camping there is so much I have to get done when I arrive, I appreciate the ease of set up.
Yeah, I have the T4 as well and it was great having it on a recent camping trip with my oldest kid. Plenty of room for both of us and our gear, and took no time for us to set up or take down. I've also used it on a couple of solo camping trips and it was nice having all that space, and as long as you set the guy lines up, it's pretty sturdy in high winds. With that said, the design and especially the tight mesh would make this less comfortable in areas of high humidity since the windows aren't terribly large. I live out west so that's not as big of a deal. I'd say it's definitely more of a tent for people who just want something quick to set up and do mostly car camping, mainly because it's so big to pack up. If packing space is at a premium, it's better to stay away from large pop-up tents like this anyway due to the attached poles.
Thanks Luke, I own a overland and everything Luke said is spot on. If you can believe it gazelle told me that the tent has 2 rows of stitches and I shouldn’t be concerned about defects. ??? Since ours is larger we set up cots and can stand up inside. Unfortunately like Luke has mentioned condensation is a huge issue being a single walled tent.
My wife and I have a 4 person it's perfect for use we put a queen size air mattress and all of our gear and coolers. Just enough room to get in and out of the door I had to spray the water proofing on it and used seem seal the holes. We are in the tent around $500 but once you seal it, it's a good tent.
I have a t4 expedition tent. Slept through two thunderstorms in FL and used it about six times. So far so good. It is indeed hard to go through the doors. I always bring a roll of duct tape to seal up any bug entrances that might exist after erecting the tent; I check all the seams very carefully but so far I haven’t needed to use any tape. No bugs inside despite being in rustic FL campsites. I love being able to stand fully upright in it (I’m 6’1). I love I can put all my important gear in it at night. I can put it up/down no problem, but I do wonder if I should get something a little smaller as I get older. The airflow isn’t great, as you said. I haven’t found any holes. All that said, I might sell it if I can because I worry about the detachable floor as the tent gets older. Thanks for the video.
The tent stake issue is no issue at all, here's an old Boy Scout trick for you. Use a short piece of cord/rope and hook it under the stake "lip" and pull with 2 hands - no discomfort, tons of leverage and super fast. If you want make like a 'garotte' with a couple sticks for handles.
I have a T4 and went through a heavy rain storm in Florida and I was bone dry. I also let it stand lone with high wind and it never gave in. I will say it can be hot inside in extreme heat.
I have been camping for many years and I have every tent Gazelle makes. Not one problem have I experienced with it. It's a tent. No tent is perfect. I have a very nice home and I spray once a year for bug mitigation. Bugs are bugs. Not a big deal. Great product.
I have a T4 and absolutely love it. I pull a trailer behind a bike we leave for weeks out camping and best purchase i have ever made. Never had a problem with bugs im a 300lbs man built like a football player wide shoulders i get in and out no problem. it does go up within minutes and used the ground stakes once on one side and attached the hook on the sidewall once to my bike trailer because wind was pushing it back in. We where by the ocean the next morning 5 or more had broken poles of other makes and sleeping in their cars. Some where inside the camping lunch room sleeping on the floor. For some the weight could be a bit of a drawback is the only hick. Of all the years of camping the absolute thing this tent makes it the best is. Easy setup, absolutely easy to get back in the pouch with extra room for a door carpet and drop tarp. Pouches inside for plenty of storage. The tight meshing is great for the smallest of bugs we often encounter here in Canada. Its a 4 season tent therefore it keeps heat but there are so many windows circulation is not a problem. None of the stitching issues you have mentioned is remotely close to how mine was put together.
I've had a T4 for a few years. Set up and take down are FAST 4-5 Minutes from bag to fully staked out once you've done it a couple times. The size does run small, T4 will sleep 3 comfotably. It's heavy and in the bag it barely fits in my car trunk. No leaks. The mesh is very tight, and condensation can be a problem. I found mine to be well built and has been used in all seasons. It's one of the best tents I've ever owned.
I was interested in this tent (or a similar design), so this review is invaluable and so I'll be avoiding this particular brand. Thank you Luke and Susie, as a female hearing Susie's experiences is so helpful. ❤👍
I've had the T4 for about 5 years and have had zero issues. The only negative he mentioned that I agree with is the doors, but that's a small price to pay when you compare it to rooftop tents with ladders, flimsy "regular" tents, or inflatable tents that can pop and need to be staked out to work right.
Good job on the review.. maybe you should ask for a replacement tent you could’ve got a bad egg… maybe the tent was produced late in the afternoon on Friday and everybody was in a rush… I’ve had two of their tents and never had any problem. I camp mainly in the desert, but also spend some time in the California woods. Never a problem with bugs or leaks. Hopefully they send you a replacement, and you can give it another review.
The engineering is the problem. Poor door design. Airflow is not substantial. Doesn't matter if made on a Wednesday. Day doesn't fix the design issues.
@@Miderguy_ Just buy a Coleman Weathermaster 6-person cabin tent. I'd assume they're still good; the reviews are very positive. Never used mine in prolonged rain, but it handled a very violent Arizona thunderstorm including high winds. Great ventilation, great headroom, and room for full size camping cots to get you off the cold ground. Only downside: takes two people to set up and it's definitely a car camping deal. At that point you're not so much in a tent as in a portable lodge.
@@Miderguy_ I have two versions of the tent and never had any problems . tons of reviews have been done and most are really positive.. it’s a 90 seconds setup…
I went through two from rei, both had same qc issues from factory and one had blood all over it from factory and mid aligned seam holes with no thread in them not to mention big random pun sized holes in material everywhere….. and weak spots of tents is straps that hold poles in top of tent and stretch and bend, and straps that hold stakes. Also door sucks on it, it’s too long to pack up, and leaks water in all the random holes and screwed up seams.. Also floor is too big to Velcro perfectly inside to walls making big gaps in corners of floor for water, bugs, animals to get in tent…
Thank for the informative video. I have the T4 Plus Overland edition in green, and I love it. I've not had the same issues, but I've also not had it go through a heavy thunderstorm or overnight rain. Access and storage are never an issue, but only my wife and I use it. It cost just over $1,000 in Canada so not cheap. I wish you luck finding another tent that suits your needs.
I have the gazelle t4 plus and i love it. My only complaints are the size when it's in the bag and the mesh not letting air in. Same with our gazebo. Otherwise they've both been fantastic. No leaking.
Funny thing for me here .. is the hubby and I are shopping for a large family type tent. ..we saw this exact tent and just from watching you and her on your little overtime stay in this tent. We totally skipped over it if there is more then 2 problems with any tent when we buy it... we immediately take it back!! It becomes shelf dust literally if you keep it!! We are however looking for an inflatable tent for our upcoming trip on that had elec ports. Because I and one grandchild have asthma and if we become ill and need a breathing treatment in the nite if our rescue inhalers fail to work... we need to be able to access or nebulizer although the jeep has a reg outlet in front the asthma attack can become bad so quickly you can't make it to the car. So yes we don't want to give up camping ! We hope that with our next tent. Things will be well!
I bought the T4 Overland Edition with the upgraded stakes and waterproof bag. My initial thoughts were positive. I set up the body of the tent for the first time in about 90 seconds then the fly and stakes. The next day I saw the loose threads and pin holes in the tent and carry bag. Overall I had a pleasant experience with the tent but I'm worried about the potential failure points. I tried to return it but I was told it had to be in the original packaging. Unfortunately I the the boxes away because they were so big I had nowhere to put them. So, now it's definitely mine for the long haul and I'll be keeping an eye on those problem spots. This was my first time out with the tent and just happened to be at the MOORE EXPO where these tents were EVERYWHERE.....
I can't believe how glaring some of those stitching issues are. they must have zero quality checks going on wherever they are making these tents. that is totally unacceptable. Cheap Coleman tents don't have quality issues that bad! thanks for this review and for the good photos of the problems.
I’ve had a gazelle t4 for 2 years going on 3, this tent is great but I can also agree with the quality control on some of the stitching etc. my tent has some similar issues, however I think the tent as a whole and based on its intended purpose it’s awesome. If they can get their quality control better and fix some of the issues it would be a home run. For my intended purpose of truck camping it’s awesome.
Same I have a T4 and have no issues that are abnormal to any other tent. Over all I am happy about it. I think he has been getting a lot of views for making controversy and this is a continuation.
As an older overlander and a Person of Unusual Size, it's definitely a PITA to setup, and even more to take down and stuff back in the bag, but honestly, I adore it. I agree with the complaints about possibly tripping over the doors at night (happens at least once per trip), and the zipper pulls all being identical is a royal PITA, but easily solvable with a bit of ingenuity and some reflective tape. In heavy rain I've had a couple of small leaks within the three years I've owned it, but nothing that pretty much every other tent would have likely experienced. It's part of outdoor living, to be honest. Is it perfect? No, but for an easy-up/easy-down tent it's the best solution out there at the moment. 4.5 out of 5 stars for this guy, who's enjoyed camping since the mid-1990s. Sounds like you got a bad copy; I'd have been on the horn with Gazelle, not-so-casually mentioning your 621,000 subscribers. I expect a brand-new one would have been on the way within minutes.
We have the Gazelle T4-Plus, which is the 4-8 person version. We’re just two, so it’s a lot of space. What I do love is that it sets up quickly, has lots of room, that includes a screened in ‘porch’, and for us no leaks. It’s such a great tent to set up in rainy weather. I agree with some of the issues that you experienced. The tight bug screen mesh does inhibit a lot of air flow, which makes it really hot on humid days. We have a Dewalt contractor fan which helps out a lot. I’ve noticed some pinholes too, which was upsetting after spending $550.00, but we haven’t had any issues with leaking. The rain fly on the T4 Plus offers more coverage. It packs up huge and takes up too much real estate inside our 4Runner, so we pack it on the roof. Fortunately, we haven’t had an issue with bug’s getting inside, and haven’t had any problem with condensation. There are pluses and minuses, but when you want a big tent that sets up quickly and packs up just as quickly, this is a good option. It’s nice for short weekend camping trips.
Maybe you got a lemon? Seems like all the comments here were solid. I was thinking of getting one of these but now may look around a little more. I have already dealt with something like this. I purchased a small shift pod tent. I used it once but probably won’t again. They should call it a “terrarium tent”. When it rains you get moisture from the outside and condensation from the inside. I have never seen a tent that bad and the door (1) is as bad and frustrating as the Gazelle. Its a shame it is so difficult to find a good tent. Thank you for this review.
I appreciate your review I’ve had my t 4 test for 2 1/2 years now and I’ve camped in it dur rain And I’ve never experienced any of the problems you’re experiencing I love this tent maybe you got a bad apple or lemon.
I have the Gazelle T4. I'm 6'-05" and can stand up inside the T4. The interior room is quite generous, but would not be big enough for 4 adults, in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the door entrances either. They can be a bit tricky getting in/out. Aside from that, I like the tent overall. The ease of setting up, and the room inside for two is more than ample.
I Have the T4 version and have only used it twice thus far. No rain, just lots of wind and zero issues with the wind. Ive been using it solo and love the space it provides. Ive noticed a few issues like pinholes, sticky zippers, and the holes bugs could get in. Permethrin should handle that. It is quick and easy to set up solo and I love that I can actually stand up in the tent. The "D" doors are annoying but better than other tents ive used at this size, ventilation is an issue as without good winds it is hot and stuffy in the tent.
I concur with the stitching and holes from the factory. I wouldn't bother with the 3....the t4 is a minimum. We use the t4 plus for overland family camping. It's a palace. The zippers we stagger. Mesh opposite from the cover. I agree with the floor being removable. And the holes. Another point is it's not seam taped FULLY....only seams not under the fly. For any tent I get, I always seam seal once I get it delivered. I can make it waterproof myself. I did that with our ozark trail instant cabin. We stayed dry in a severe downpour with that tent.
Was thinking about this tent but was hesitant due to the packed size, and didn't realize the extent of the lack of quality control. Now I am looking at the North Face Wawona 6. Would love to see a review of that tent.
I just returned a Wawona 4 because I could not get it setup by myself. The pole would not fit into the grommet on the final corner. Could have been a manufacturer issue. I bought a Nemo Highrise 4p. It's roomy and I can set the tent up by myself.
Wow! I'm shocked! I can't speak for the T3, but I have the T4 and T4 Plus and don't have any of the issues you're referencing in this video. I just came back from a camping trip in east Texas where we got pounded with rain and not a single drop (other than when I opened the door to go in and out. Maybe there is an issue with the T3 quality, but I don't see this with the T4 and T4 Plus. I sure hope they get that resolved b/c I love their tents and gazebos.
I have the T4. Haven’t noticed any quality issues but will look hard next time I’m camping. I do hate getting in and out of the door. It’s been in 2 big rainstorms so far. One was an all night rain, very windy. my wife made me put up a tarp over it. Was glad I did it
This tent stemmed from ice fishing hut designs, its the exact same thing without the insulation. It's a great design cuz its a hassle free setup with no poles to seat or clip, just pull the pucks and you're done. It's too bad they didn't use proper QC. I have a clam x6 insulated and I can't be happier with it when I ice fish. It's a 6p hexagonal tent and I sometimes use it for fall car camping. Because ice huts don't have floors for obvious reasons, this velcro floor is definitely an afterthought. But also because of how the tent folds up, a stitched floor would make the tent much more difficult to pitch/pack and maybe even physically impossible. The tent isn't great, but it's not THAT bad either. I'd give it 6/10. What I'd say this tent is perfect for is either spring or fall camping where there are less bugs. The water inside the tent isn't substantial considering the strom you put that tent through. Most people who saw that kinda storm coming woulda gone home.
Casually listening to your video until I heard that it is not bug proof. Where I camp, you can measure bugs in pounds per square inch. Thank you for covering this point.
Love your reviews. I just got my T4 Overland and have not had a chance to use it yet. Nothing bad about the quality of the tent has stood out when I set it up in my garage. I’m going to wait till we get some rainy weather in the forecast to set it up in the back yard to check for leaks. The only thing that concerns me about your review is your comments about the screen mesh. For the most part I’ll be using it solo so there will only be one person’s breath condensing. I do have a decent size battery powered fan for additional air flow..we’ll see!
The more I think about this review, the more I think it is unfairly harsh. Sure, the tent is expensive, but not as expensive as some premium tents that have similar QC issues. I especially take exception to the complaint that the tent is rated as a 3-person tent, but there isn't enough room for 3 people. Come on, all tents lie about capacity. If you want a tent that comfortably keeps 2 people plus gear, everyone know you need to buy at least a 4-person tent. I watched the first reviews TheOutdoorGearReview did on this tent and the "leak" referenced here is extremely small and as I recall there was some doubt about the source of the leak which occurred under extremely heavy rain conditions. As I previously said, I am concerned about the air flow due to the thick mesh. This is a fair criticism, especially for summer camping here in Florida. Since I've not used the tent yet, I can't comment. The attraction of this tent is the ability to stop your car, take the tent out and be ready to sleep literally in minutes. The tent is made of durable materials, much better than several of the cheapo hub tents I test drove from Amazon before settling on this one. This reviewer even commented on the strength of this tent under extreme wind.
I only used this tent once so I can't say I had any issues.. but the set up time what sold me and I go camping a lot.... Thank you Luke for doing a extremely extensive review can't return it now so I guess I'll keep it 😂😆....
Your criticisms of the tent you have (or had) are completely legitimate and I appreciate your fair review. I'm hoping that you were just unlucky to get a particularly bad T3X or that the problems are confined to that model, but that kind of shoddy workmanship makes me nervous. I ordered a Gazelle T4 hub tent because I couldn't find anything else that size that was so easy to set up and take down, and because of a lot of good reviews of it performing in bad conditions. Hopefully the quality control on the T4 hub is better than on your T3X.
I am so glad I got my T4+ just before the prices went up 2 years ago. Looks like the quality has changed. I think they might be making these at "other" factories now hence the quality non control.
I bought my T4 plus pre Covid and don’t have those QC issues. That may be the reason for poor build quality. The plus doesn’t have any ingress issues. I put a residential full size foam mattress in mine. At 6’1, I stand upright no problem.
To look at this tent from a distance it looks like a great tent. After getting a close look, thanks to you, I see all of the issues. The people that love this tent probably got lucky and got one without all the factory defects. A broke clock can be right twice a day. If I have to be sitting in a tent during an all day downpour, I need to stand up occasionally. I'm 6'1" so that means I need the tent ceiling to be about 75" high. At 68" tall at the center, I would be miserable. After a few hours, I'd pack it up an go home. Thanks for the review Bro.
Thank you so much for this review. I have arthritis and have been looking for an “instant” set up tent. I relish you testing and reviewing tents of this type. As I get older i need something lighter and easier. I will be watching for your reviews.
I think a lot of the "love" for this tent is not having to deal with poles. While there are other brands on the market, they are just not advertised as much. I have the T4 that I got a few years ago and like the tent, but dont love it. The airflow is 100% garbage, and the entrance is a PITA. the quality on mine is fine (wondering if they ramped up production and screwed QA).
I’ve borrowed a friends T4 and packed in bag it will not fit straight into a 5 foot bed pickup truck.. I have to lay diagonally. Do you know if the T3 will lay straight in a five foot bed pickup truck?
used mine about 10 or so times now. in GA and NC and VA. Never really much rain yet. Mine doesn't have the quality control issues like yours did. I haven't found any loose stitching. I have seen a few little flyers inside but figured they came in when I opened the door. biggest issues I've had is when wheelin several cars deep, finding a large enough spot to put this behemoth is sometimes difficult. I'm one of those that sold their roof top tent to go cheaper with this tent. it's been nice so far. I use a litefighter when I think it's gonna rain. Gazelle for ease of use.
I bought the new T3X overland edition and tried to cancel the order after I ran across your other review. They gave me the story that it is already loaded and ready to ship out and can't be stopped at this point. I received it and got an rma to return it without opening it but the shipping is so expensive it isn't worth it. I at least got a discount on it from Overland Bound ($315) so I didn't pay full retail. Hopefully when I open it up and try it out I don't have any of the issues that you had.
I recently bought the Gazelle T4. After seeing your initial reviews I set mine up, inspected all seams and stress points and put seam sealer on every seam that is below the level of the rainfly. I also put seam sealer on the stress points around the wall panel center points where the eye bolt protrudes out of the side. I didn't see the quality control issues that you found in yours, at least not to the extent you did. Yours had a ton of issues. I'm taking mine out for its inaugural campout soon, and I'm hoping for good results.
I ordered a Gazelle T3X Overland Edition before I saw this video. As I was waiting for it to arrive I worried that perhaps I'd made a poor choice. I've got to say I've found almost zero stiching issues and haven't found any holes in the fabric. I find the quality of the construction to be just fine. I can't find any gaps in the velcro floor at the corners, perhaps they changed that for the overland edition? I don't get the dislike, I think it's going to be just what I was looking for. Is it perfect? Probably not but I think the issues discussed here are very strongly overstated. The FSR tent pictured in the video is a $900 tent, that's 3X the price of the Gazelle. Haters going to hate, I fell for it and viewed the video #HateForViews
For another $150 you can purchase a Kodiak 9x8 with 6 ft ceilings. Setup is a breeze. Being canvas, condensation is no issue. Although they don't recommend it, it can be stove jacked, which would be awesome. Heavy yes, 54 lbs but that inclueds the pole weight which are bagged separate. As for wind and rain.....this thing is bullet proof. A lifetime tent for sure. For your property, I cannot imagine a finer and more fun tent. For a few bucks more you can up it to a 10x10 or 10x14. The VX Deluke features huge windows with screens all around.
Thank you for making this review. I thought I was crazy for having the same comments and concerns as you. I ended up selling mine because of the ergonomics of the tent. I didn't really have any QC issues, but the stupid doors were going to kill me and I hated having to hunch over (I'm 5'10" which isn't that tall). I loved the overall concept of the floor, but the execution sucked and I agree it would have been better to just have the floor sewn in.
Luke, I am curious to know if you have contacted Gazelle bout the various issues you have encountered? With other products you mention reaching out to those companies, why not with this one? Would some permethrin help with the bug and spider issues? I seem to recall you using that on other ground sheets and items, why not this one?I appreciate your work on this just some observations and questions.
I have the T4 Overland, more expensive but did not say any of the problems other and size and weight. Seam taped and one very small hole where the pull down for the ceiling is. There are washers on the side pullouts that plug the hole you were talking about, and none of the seam and overlap issues. Have not had really bad weather in it to test it in those conditions yet, but has keep me dry and bug free so far even when the weather was not the best. It may be that the Overland models are made to a higher standard with better quality workmanship. The are more expensive and that may be the reason as well as better materials.
Thank you for your feed on this tent even I was to buy the the next level because I know most company they lies about their products to sell thanks again you save me all the troubles
I had an orange version of the Gazelle. The space and the freedom from flying insects was great. The QA issues were loose threads and other minor deficits, zippers and lack of airflow. My biggest concern was that it consumed too much space in my Jeep SUV. I returned it after a single use.
Ive had the Shiftpod2 and the T8 Overland gazelle. The shiftpod is a sweat lodge with no convection. The windows and vents are not in the right place. It builds up condensation fast! Shiftpods answer to ventilation was to line up the door with prevailing winds at the time. It easily traps mold because of the fabric and never goes away no mater how much you clean. Its a terrible summer and humid tent. The shiny surface can only reflect so much UV until the sun just heats it up. One hack I had was to use the Blast shield(rainfly) with pool noodles underneath to help with the heat soak. Structurally this tent is bomb proof. I live in Michigan and would not buy this again. The T8 had the same water leaks and condensation issues. The linear design of the T8 is a hot mess. The hubs and polls get intermingled and when you try to pull the hub you end up breaking a pole or hub or both. I did not like that the tents pockets and accesories were all at sleeping on the floor height. I had many pin holes and threads flying everywhere. I also did not like the cheap shock cord that keeps the rainfly on. It flaps and makes noise in high winds. Would not buy again. I'm interested in FSR's Hub tents if they make them anymore. A company called Overlandish makes another hub tent I'd like to see as well.
Had the exact same experience with my T4 Overland. Sent the original one back due to leaking. Replacement from Gazelle had the same issue. Gazelle customer service was decent, however even they say that this is not a waterproof item and some water entering is expected during rain. I’ve never had a tent leak before and don’t trust one that does.
I'm looking for a great hub tent. I know this isn't one of those. What recommendations do you have for us? Have you already reviewed one or more that are really good? Thanks.
I own this tent and agree with the conclusions 110%. For whatever reason the overland crowd (looking at you, Michael from Overland Bound) really pushes it. It’s not all that and a bag of chips. The doors, the lack of vestibule, packed size …. all problematic.
I have the T3 but it is the old version, not the T3X tested here. Quality and waterproofness is good on mine. Air flow can be an issue and the two zippers to get out the door can be annoying. Bugs don't bother me much, so I just leave the mesh panel tied back out of the way and leave the tops of the doors open for air flow. A possible alternative to gazelle tents are the Oztent line. I am personally considering the Oztent RV3 for overland camping.
A few years ago after doing extensive research for a good instant tent that could also allow for me and hubby to stand up (6’ and 6’4” respectively) and house cots, I ended up w the Core Equipment instant cabin 10P w mesh awning. This tent may be too big for what Suzy wants. But as for Core Equipment I am very impressed w the quality and customer service. They also sell replacement fly for the tent. Notes: I can set this tent up by myself and have done so 4 times. It does help if dear hubby or my teen daughter helps. One time one of the bi-directional hinges got kind of resistant to the bend I needed but was easily corrected w two hands gently pushing it towards the correct bend. Also the first year we had it it did perform well w rain. When there was a dramatic temperature change after a thunderstorm w 100% humidity as is common on the east coast (Pa) there was some condensation under the fly. I corrected this by using USB charging mini fans pointed towards the ceiling mesh. Also year two I nik wax treated w solar proof seal and it performed flawlessly through Tstorm humidity and temp change bc the rain sheeted off the fly more quickly. Twice it was in standing water after downpours and the floor held back water also using the complimentary footprint. This tent is bomber when I go out w my family and the other designs may suit what Suzy wants. When I go out solo I take either the Alps Mountaineering “Sherper’s” Explorer 6p or the REI special NorthFace Sequoia (which is the NF Wawona 4p) and these are both pole tents but are very easy to set up and I can stand up in both & place a cot so there’s no trouble for Suzy bc I’m 6’. Good luck!!
I hear the mixed reviews for this tent I was thinking about buying. I think it would not work for me. I want a tent to be totally waterproof, has a bathtub floor, and one I can stand up in. Ventilation is also important. Has Susie found a tent yet that she likes?
I wonder what the odds are that when we buy something thinking it is "name brand" but it is actually a counterfeit copy? I'd be interested in hearing what Gazelle replies and if they have a serial number, etc authenticating their tents.
They want… its hard for them to keep them in stock… I own one and its a great tent. It’s geared towards Overlanding and thats a very different world compared to the typical content on this channel.
This tent is not the companies design. They paid to have their name put on said design, that is why there are several companies that have this exact same tent.
I own a gazelle tent and it’s awesome. This review sounds like a paid “hit piece” This tent totally works. This review is filled with goofiness and contradictions.
Great review! Have you tried an Oztent out btw? (Heavy, and we have to use a rainfly to avoid condensation with it. It's over 2m long when packed away but it's still the quickest tent to 'pitch')
overly critical imo... I've had the T3X, T4, and the largest (new style) gazebo for going on 5-ish years now and camp nearly every weekend with them and my large family/friends... I live in an area with unpredictable weather and large temp swings. I've never seen any issues with water, condensation, or QC.... As far as bugs.... no tent is "bug proof" LOL... treat your tent with permethrin or similar if you're that concerned with it.
Hmm weird I've had my Gazette overland edition tent for a couple of years now and never had a single problem. We just got back from a camping trip in Utah where it rained all night and it was windy. No problems. No leaks. Whats going on?
@@pingpongballz5998 thanks for the feedback I really do appreciate it. I just received a new T4 and we had a nice rain the other day when I had set up in the backyard and I experienced some of the same leak issues as described on the video. I had a leak at the door and then three different leaks at the hub areas

I use this in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Weather shows no mercy and this tent has held strong. 3 person easily.
I agree as well. I'm in Western WA so I'm quite familiar with the rain and bugs. Have had zero issues.
Is a woman’s dna different where they need a specific tent?
Thank you for your counterpoint. I’m new and almost got scared off after his video.
I have the T4 tent and love it. It has held up to PNW rain storms for days no leaks and the T4 has room for 3 people and stuff.
😂I had the same problem with ants and used gorilla tape
Never had an issue with mine and I put it through some weather in the Adirondack and Catskills mountains
The video is about the T3 X u saw a T4?
I'd like to see you test similar tents, both cheaper and more expensive.
I own a gazzell it's one of the best on the market. Had mine in heavy rains no isses.
I was thinking the same thing. But the floor is a 50/50 at best…critters can easily crawl in.
The video is about the t3 X
@@Zzunc the t3 is almost exactly the same just smaller.
I agree, I have a t4.. 4 adults is a stretch.. two adults and two kids maybe but there would be no room for gear.
The video is about the T3 X u saw a T4?
@@Zzunc No. Just relaying my experiences with the T4 in comparison to Lukes video on the T3.
I'm so glad you're covering this tent. I've been considering buying it.
Was thinking about this tent but was hesitant due to the packed size, and didn't realize the extent of the lack of quality control. Now I am looking at the North Face Wawona 6. Would love to see a review of that tent.
I use a NF 4p “Sequoia” for REI which is the same as the NF Wawona 4p and its great for summer humidity bc it has so much ventilation.
Same here looking at the Wawona now after this review
I have had no issues outside of what is normal in the world of tents for my t4
Did you follow up and get the T4? If so your feedback would be appreciated.
So your inside the tent. You unzip the mesh then unzip the door. Once outside you can't zip up the mesh only the door. Whats the issue?
I bought the new T3X overland edition and tried to cancel the order after I ran across your other review. They gave me the story that it is already loaded and ready to ship out and can't be stopped at this point. I received it and got an rma to return it without opening it but the shipping is so expensive it isn't worth it. I at least got a discount on it from Overland Bound ($315) so I didn't pay full retail. Hopefully when I open it up and try it out I don't have any of the issues that you had.
So what similar tent do you recommend?
I recently bought the Gazelle T4. After seeing your initial reviews I set mine up, inspected all seams and stress points and put seam sealer on every seam that is below the level of the rainfly. I also put seam sealer on the stress points around the wall panel center points where the eye bolt protrudes out of the side. I didn't see the quality control issues that you found in yours, at least not to the extent you did. Yours had a ton of issues. I'm taking mine out for its inaugural campout soon, and I'm hoping for good results.
Better bring a box fan.
Thanks for this! I'm going to buy a Kodiak.
Thanks.
Thanks, last week I bought the t4+ and I am just watching this video now. Hopefully it isn't a dud since it is expensive.
What do you think about the onetigris hammock hot tents? I believe there are two versions.
I need that Patagonia jacket. Which one is it? R1 maybe?
Thank you for your review! Very helpful. Is there another pop-up tent with the same dimensions and similar design you would recommend over this one?
I wonder what the odds are that when we buy something thinking it is "name brand" but it is actually a counterfeit copy? I'd be interested in hearing what Gazelle replies and if they have a serial number, etc authenticating their tents.
What tent do recommend?
Could someone tell me what the hubs are made from? Are the plastic or metal?
This is one of those reviews that make me realize to take all reviews with a grain of salt.
Gazelle is owned by the same company as Eskimo (ice fishing). It’s their attempt at converting ice hubs into camping tents.
Is there something wrong with that?
Hopefully this company goes back to the drawing board with this tent it definitely has potential
They want… its hard for them to keep them in stock… I own one and its a great tent. It’s geared towards Overlanding and thats a very different world compared to the typical content on this channel.
I think if they have a quality control section then most of the issues would have been fixed. Not all, but most.
This tent is not the companies design. They paid to have their name put on said design, that is why there are several companies that have this exact same tent.
@@brysontrotman5865 this is kinda true… Gazelle is actually owned by a company called Ardisam that owns 16 other brands including Gazelle.
I own a gazelle tent and it’s awesome. This review sounds like a paid “hit piece” This tent totally works. This review is filled with goofiness and contradictions.
Will you look in to the new bushnell pop up tents to compare?
Is yours still leak free? I just got a T4 and have the same leak issues as Luke experienced.
@@EPH113 not at all. I've had it for years.
@@pingpongballz5998 thanks for the feedback I really do appreciate it. I just received a new T4 and we had a nice rain the other day when I had set up in the backyard and I experienced some of the same leak issues as described on the video. I had a leak at the door and then three different leaks at the hub areas
@EPH-re2xj hmm interesting. Maybe because of mass production in China, they don't make them as good as it use to. Or I got lucky.

Great review. I would like to buy a tent, but I would want one that that checks all of the boxes and doesn't break the bank.
Is there a version of this type tent that you have found to be acceptable?
