@@pinderoutdoors1983 prevention is key. One raccoon will wipe out half of his flock over night. Had it happen to me 10 chickens and 13 turkeys. Woke up the next day and only 5 birds left and looked like a blood bath in the coop.
Take the stud you removed and use it to create a top and bottom frame for your window. Find a scrap 2x4 and create left and right sides of the proposed frame for your window. Then, rescrew the window in from the outside, going through both the siding and the 2x4 frame you just created. The proposed frame would be secured to the studs on both sides and help secure the window from heavy winds. Also, make a heavy screen out of 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth and paint it black then secure it over the mosquito screen to keep predators out. Painting it black will make it almost invisible. Love your videos...as we all watch with envious eyes.
A couple ideas a few that may have been already suggested. Cut the barn doors in half and add more hinges. This will allow you to toss them in and air it out come spring/summer. Make a funnel out of pvc going to feeder so you can fill it from the outside. As suggested below make a gutter to catch rain for water. This could create issues come winter with freezing so a water heater in the tank may be needed. Also , to get eggs you have to go in. Maybe build an external nesting box you can access from the outside. Just a few ideas. Keep up the great content. It's entertaining to watch.
Flair, get yourself a big old floor Squeegee - It'll make mucking out a lot easier and won't damage the flooring. Plus, if you rinse it, you can just drag all the water out. I think also, if you were to have a routine of opening the door everyday with say 3 knocks on the wall, the Chickens might start to learn that's their "freedom time"
I agree with what the other guy said! Definitely squeegee the floors!! Spray it and squeegee! It’ll save the floors and make it 10 times better man. And knock 3 times before entering so the chickens know it’s time to move!
also instead of having the "cross beams" (those 6 foot 1 by 6's your using) for the roosting racks touch the floor make them go diagonal all the way across the room and attach a foot or so off the ground to the walls. Or you can just cut the last foot off of them where they touch the ground and put a support going form the new bottom corner to the wall behind it. the idea is to have the racks fully floating off the ground, that way you can lay the plastic out and easily cover the whole floor and you can just take up the corners, drag it out ,and dump the old fluff a lot easier. (just to save you a lot of scrapping fluff and your floors.)
Slap a treated 2x4 across the doorway with a couple screws it'll keep all the bedding from being tracked out every time you go in there. Then in the winter just add bedding on top of the old to get a deep bed. Then come spring pull the board out and shove the mass out the door into a skidloader bucket.
I do believe you have created the nicest coop I've seen. The flooring is a huge upgrade for your sake and it was very clever to have it go up the sides of the wall with a small lip. You will have some very happy, healthy, egg-pooping hens for years to come.
Chickens want to get as high as possible, closing off the loft was a must. Also, they don't need to be "warm". In fact, they need to be hardened to the cold. Only need to keep the coop above freezing.
Now build a fold-down window protector that covers the window from the inside so that you can leave it open all day/night without anything being able to get in. And I say a fold-down so that you can pull a pin or unlatch it to fold it down so that you can wash the inside of the window.
Helpful hint, since your doors swing out, get a 2x6 and put it on the inside of the doors so keep the shavings inside, I did it to mine and works awesome!
12:45 Glad to bring it to your attention, It looks likes your chicken 🐔 door works perfectly, you can see the lil curious chicken come back to see what you guys are doing
I built my own 200 sq ft coop back in the day. Up here in Canada I had to insulate it to keep the birds warm when it got below -30C. Fiberglass batts, and some plywood got the job done quick. Not sure if you need to do that, but it's an idea. Any temps below 10* C (34* F) will begin to affect how the chickens lay as well as their consistency.
Lots of nice little updates. You might wanna do an extension so you can get eggs from the outside to stop heat loss etc. Also maybe in the spring get some gutters and rain barrels and use the water for the chickens that way with endless water. You may need to frame up that window on the inside, and put some wire for the rickys. Also maybe ensure the ramp doesnt fall and get them to go up and down it by knocking on the wall like someone suggested just until they get use to it. If they dont use it after that idk maybe they think its too small or something, for them to duck and get out. You may still need to insulate, I know my sister in law did and used plexy glass as well and her chickens and roosters are all fine thru the winter. I really think u did a great job with the air vent and ur right its more like their bathroom fan, just like ours in our homes. Its to circulate the air and hopefully remove the smell. Think of it as their "can fan", let the poop smell leave. Im hoping you still have all your chickens tomorrow, perhaps showing them in and out from the outside a few times and they may get it, because last time they were forced in. Maybe try the mealworm trick going up the ramp and inside and see if that works. Turned out great tho im sure its gonna beat chasing chickens etc.
Be careful about giving them to much heat…believe it or not chickens are very durable in the winter and the coops hold more warmth than it may seem, might wanna add a thermostat in there.
I can't believe how clumped up the wood shavings got so fast! Would you need to cover the window in the winter or is it small enough to not be an issue? I think that should be your tag line. "Don't hire us, we'll get things done!" I think it was smart to leave a small ridge around the floor. It will help keep the floor edges from rotting. You guys did a great job, you've really come far with your building techniques. The chickens will thank you for it, maybe they'll lay a special egg for you🤔
Much better. Now the floor will be fine. Sorry so late to the party but I live in west kinda central Florida a half mile from the Gulf of Mexico, and we just had that hurricane hit and it put our power out for 2 days. But It's back on now. Thank goodness. You'd think I'd be smart and buy a generator for my house. But, this only happens every once in a while in the area I live so a generator that sits for a few years at a time doesn't want to run when it's needed. lol.
You actually don't want to clean the coop in winter. The shavings and the manure decomposing and composting create heat and it helps keep the coop warm. You also need at least 2 more bales of shavings in there
What if you use flex seal for the floor then the vinyl or what ever it is you’re using. Also how about a window(s) behind the nesting box so you can grab the eggs and be able to just look and see if the is a egg without opening
Claire if you could run the linoleum up the walls 4 in in every direction and out over the edge and down around the bottom of the door so the entire floor is covered with linoleum and the edges as well
You dont need a light in there only red heat bulb for winter you put a window in, your just running up your electric bill keeping a light on for 12hrs a day!!! The nesting boxes need straw in them with a golf ball in each one. The automatic door has an app to open and close it from your phone I think and should have built a large 20x20 pen on the side because chickens need so many hours of sunlight helps with egg production and they would for sure go back to roost at night and be safe from predators.
Another great episode. The window needs a 2x4 frame. There are proper air movers designed for indoor gardens. $150-$$$$$ . The unit you are using is to help the air move. You’re try, that’s what counts. Sheew. Lake X boat house videos
Pressure wash it let it dry then prime floor with Zinsser Cover Stain oil base primer then get some Epoxy paint for garage floors . That will keep it from rotting and all you have to do is wash it out with the water hose we need to
Also, you mentioned the sliding door in the winter on what to do? I would add a 16" long little shelter around it like an Igloo. They extend out for a reason haha. I live in the north and it's how my dog house is. Also, those chickens are 100% going to get in the loft. And for the floor, I wouldn't worry, you're up on skids off the ground. So you're getting airflow from under it.
Just an idea for there feed you can put a a stick pvc 3 inch or better in the corners of the chicken coop with a 90 elbow and a 45 Elbow so they just eat out of that helps reduce wasted feed harder for them to kick it out of a standard food dish! Just have to look it up for a picture they work great
Hey Andrew Flair you need to light a match blow it out see where the smoke goes if its sucking or not dont use powder or dust or chalk just use a match or stick light on fire blow out hold near the vent make sure its working hope this helps 👍 👍👍👍
Also if you ever need to get it cooler during summer, you can use hi powered 6” ventilation fans used for growing married iguanas and insulated ducting but that’s if you need it and wanna spend a lil extra cash
Cut a door flap (with lock) on the outside of the building behind the nesting boxes. You will not have to go into the coop to get your eggs. Thank me later.
You need to do is put some flower box below that window then you plant some small sunflower's so when they ripen they just fall into the chicken pen so the chickens can clean them up.
Honestly man there’s a watering kit on Amazon that uses pvc pipe if you can I’d recommend plumbing that through the shed and hooking it up to a hose is you have water close by they will go through jug of water in a day and easily
the best thing to seal the floor in the coop is elmers glue get about two or three gallons of glue and just pour it out and let it level its self out and with in a few hours it will dry clear and be pretty much water proof it could take more to do that floor because its sorta coarse and it will suck up the glue
I need to start with the fact that I am not a chicken guy, I'm an HVAC guy, but I was thinking about hot air loss in the winter. Maybe you could build or install some sort of curtain (imagine the plastic strips in the back room of the grocery store) so that when you open the main door you don't just flush all the warm air out... Oh, and you could have mounted the window upside down so that more heat from the top can escape, but Its not worth the results to change it now.
Flare, you need to have a look at the watering system that Matt Carragher did on off the ranch because I think it would be perfect for what you have there!
Chickens like darkness and privacy when laying. Put some curtains on the front of the nesting boxes or use a sheet of ply to make the holes smaller. My god, Ive never seen two men take so long to measure and mark the centre of an opening. When sealing a window, you're better off with a straight line of silicone rather than a wiggly one. You want ventilation in the coop all year and will only need heat when VERY cold. The birds will keep themselves spread on the roost in the summer and huddle together in the winter. screw a 2x2 frame on the outside of the window and then fix 2x2 welded mesh to that to keep the racoons and possums out. Don't leave real eggs in the boxes to encourage them. Use onxy eggs. The more eggs in the boxes, the more chance there is on them cracking on and then they will get into a habit of eating their own eggs. The vinyl floor will work well but be careful that you don't get mites between the flooring and the wall. Get a good spray to prevent them.
You guys are learning.. Real beefcakes now.. I noticed you finally flipped the sawz-all blade upside down so its in line with the saw.. Thats the way the pros do it.. 👍Old carpenters trick i picked up about 25 years ago.. lol..
Before you add extra bedding during the winter.... sprinkle some diatomaceous earth down. It helps with the smell, bugs, and diseases. Keep up the solid content.
MY BROTHER IN CHRIST. Flair that round to square HVAC adapter is for vents. All you had to do is drill a round hole in the bottom of the loft and connect that end to the existing vent.
I’m not sure if anyone has suggested this but maybe cut out behind the nesting boxes and put those pieces on hinges so you can get the eggs from the outside
You guys did a nice job with the vent. The only thing is you shouldn't of reduced to a smaller size. That fan will work fine. It's not supose to be super powered. It's just to move the air.
You guys should open the hatches on the misile silo get a crane and lower jiggins sub down there you could also lower a boat down there at the same time
H J Witherow had a great suggestion so wanted to repeat it in hopes you see it. The suggestion was to put in screen doors so you can open up the wooden ones for a really nice breeze. My idea added onto that is that instead of actual doors, you could even get away with those screen curtains with the magnets and weights. It's not the same, but my brother has them on his RV and swears by them. Especially since you will likely be carrying things going in and out. Plus, it'd be easier (and cheaper) than trying to find, or have made, screen doors for what's likely to be a very custom size. Just a thought! Heather
Chickens will tear up insulation. If you cover it the insulation with plywood or some kind of paneling it gives a place for mice to eventually burrow into and cause problems. Just the chicken coop their animals that are bred to stay outside they should be okay without insulation
I think maybe you should get some spray in bed liner for the floor. You don't have to use black, you can get different colors. Yes may be more expensive 1 time, but if you put down laminate, then pull it up, seal, and put more laminate down, prolly be close to same price. I think, never bought laminate or spray in bed liner, just a thought I had.
if they don't learn by the next time you want them out try opening the little door and banging on the walls from the outside with no human inside, may work
The only suggestion I can make on this video is put a screen over that duct you'll have birds nesting in come spring trust me I had to screen over 700 bath/kitchen ducts last year when I was working wildlife controll
I will say nice work with the coop but the exaust fan is closer to the vent out of the coop so thats why the air comes out with more force where as if you switched the fan closer towards the intake vent it can acctually start to suck up that nasty chicken coop smell and then the fan can push the air out of the vent
Pretty sure that Window is installed backwards… but that’s okay. It’s a shed for chickens… and the access to open from outside is a good deal I’d imagine.
The radio actually helps with animals trying to get in. The sound kinda scares them and it’s kept my chickens safe for the longest time and we’ve “fingers crossed” never lost one with a radio playing at a low volume
You should have used that paint sprayer you used on your doors at the cabin and sprayed the whole thing with an oil primer like kilz or east sand from sherwin Williams.
i think that fan will pull enough air for that floor space, you may need to put your intake lower come winter though, that thing is gonna suck out alot of heat that high come winter
A majority of moisture will dry-rot from under the floor after sealing the floor inside. This will occur from moisture in the air, ie; fog, after rain, daily humidity, etc... It has always mesmerized my minit brain cells why they do not build with a moisture sealed subfloor on these wood sheds. We had to replace my father's shed floor 2 years after he bought one. His second one, we replaced it first thing. It was probably over-kill, but that was 15+ years ago and still going.
should of went throught the vent because now the bad air is going to be sucked back in because of the negitive pressure. id tape off the vent above the fan and put a vent at the bottom on the other side of the door so the fresh cool air gets pulled throughout the whole pen. the window will probably be fine but when building small work shops we usually bring in the air from the bottom and vent from the top. ideally just sticking the fan on the other side of the top vent would of been fine withoutthe tubing if you put a floor vent in and it would of done the same thing.
make a giant pencil sharpener type thing to make your own flakes to use all the dead treas and branches on the property. giant razer thing on a motor that you can feed branches into. that would be a good video. or just get a wood laythe and turn logs down fence posts for the new pen at the new house and use the shavings for the chickens.
Flair Beef Cake Boys I can't believe what you did in this episode of all things you could do you did the unthinkable. All the uses of a roll of this and you choose to USE DUCT tape on exhaust DUCTS , I never seen anyone actually use DUCT TAPE to tape Ducts it's unheard of. Wait is there camouflage DUX TAPE ? Could use to temporarily camo a shotgun for duck season. Keep the Great content coming. Janesville Wisconsin.
flair let me come help ya with anything and everything. it would be a dream to come out there and help. i been watching since right before the farm got flooded
Don't forget Ricky can get in the window from the screen. Might want to put some welded wire around the window.
As long as he keeps everything away from the outside of the window he don't have to worry about Ricky getting through it

Yay. You do read comments. That vinyl flooring is going to save the plywood floor. Easy to clean
All you had to do is drill a round hole in the bottom of the loft and connect that end to the existing vent.
take the feed away for a day or so then try and bait them in and out the doorway with food again!
you need to add like a 24/7 live camera inside the chicken coop so we can watch the chickens

I’m not sure if anyone has suggested this but maybe cut out behind the nesting boxes and put those pieces on hinges so you can get the eggs from the outside
Congratulations

You guys did a nice job with the vent. The only thing is you shouldn't of reduced to a smaller size. That fan will work fine. It's not supose to be super powered. It's just to move the air.
Awesome video 👏👏👍👍you can check how good the exhaust fan is working with a smoke 💣 👍
I always put a layer os hay orstraw on floor and at least 2" of fluff in the nesting boxes
You guys should open the hatches on the misile silo get a crane and lower jiggins sub down there you could also lower a boat down there at the same time
Looks like professionally installed!!!!

Yes, waiting to varnish the floor wood would be the normal lazy Flair way out. Love the show.

You can use more exterior caulking on the window or some foam gap filler exterior. As long as its exterior to hold the water out

Use sand in the coop and use a big scoop like I big litter box. Clean up would be so fast
You should get self water and storage set up like demo ranch make life easy in long run. Really like your setup and all-out enthusiasm.
wish I could read minds when that fell!!! lol. was expecting some " colorful " language. know it would've come out of me 😂😂😂

I'm surprised that you did not insulate the inside of your chicken coop especially seeing how you have metal boxes for nesting.
flair has to see this
First thing I thought of.
Chickens will tear up insulation. If you cover it the insulation with plywood or some kind of paneling it gives a place for mice to eventually burrow into and cause problems. Just the chicken coop their animals that are bred to stay outside they should be okay without insulation
@@jester-gq9jq spray foam insulation with plywood over it problem solved!
I think maybe you should get some spray in bed liner for the floor. You don't have to use black, you can get different colors. Yes may be more expensive 1 time, but if you put down laminate, then pull it up, seal, and put more laminate down, prolly be close to same price. I think, never bought laminate or spray in bed liner, just a thought I had.
if they don't learn by the next time you want them out try opening the little door and banging on the walls from the outside with no human inside, may work
WE HAD TIN ON THE FLOOR OF OUR COOP WHEN I WAS A KID. IT WAS USUALLY EASY TO CLEAN OFF UNLESS IT WAS WAY BELOW ZERO & FROZEN.
You gotta go off grid. Add a solar panel on the roof of the chicken coop. Eliminates running extension cords all over the farm. 😁
Need to make fan reversible, else lose heated air in winter. Love the show.

I would make a frame around the window for extra support and that way you can screw your window right to it.
The radio actually helps with animals trying to get in. The sound kinda scares them and it’s kept my chickens safe for the longest time and we’ve “fingers crossed” never lost one with a radio playing at a low volume
Just have it on every night and it should do the trick
You should have used that paint sprayer you used on your doors at the cabin and sprayed the whole thing with an oil primer like kilz or east sand from sherwin Williams.
i think that fan will pull enough air for that floor space, you may need to put your intake lower come winter though, that thing is gonna suck out alot of heat that high come winter
As you say it's deep beading.
It basically starts to compost so it's warm on the Chickens feet 🐦.
Booshy build Boys 🙌👊🍁.
JO JO IN VT 😆💕

Thanks flair for the air holes
You should add a removable kick board at the door so the shavings don't muk them up
Congratulations🎉🎉🎉

Another thing you could do is change the nesting box to some other material. That metal will be cold during winter
Congratulations

make a giant pencil sharpener type thing to make your own flakes to use all the dead treas and branches on the property. giant razer thing on a motor that you can feed branches into. that would be a good video.
or just get a wood laythe and turn logs down fence posts for the new pen at the new house and use the shavings for the chickens.
Congratulations...

I can't believe what you did in this episode of all things you could do you did the unthinkable.
