Two point cut technique at the end is genius. Nothing more frustrating than doing a good wrap to that point and then messing up the finishing cut. For a job that most home mechanics do once a year it's a great tip to get the perfect finish. Personally I prefer the tape to end on the bottom of the bars but that's tricky to do without a strong workstand. Wrapping only the tape and not the bars with the finishing strip is also a good tip, as long as the core of the tape matches the outside.
Whenever I tackle a job on the bike, I look at a few youtube clips to get the various methods. This clip was the fifth I watched and when I got to the end I realised that it captured all the important points and I suggest that if you only have time for one clip, then this is easily the best. And, by way of coincidence, I'm fitting a supacaz tape!
Great vid! Some nice tips esp on plugging the bar early and the final cut. On top of the bar IMO it's preferable to be wrapping toward the rider...so if you're doing a fig8 you can just start in the opposite direction
Been wrapping bar tapes for more than 30 years..... Usually I only get the cheap cork ones.... But have to admit supacaz are the best I have ever had.... Last longer, Comfy and super grippy. Little extra tip.... When applying it to aero bars, I finish bar tape an inch in from the ends on the flat bar section (leaving most of the bar exposed). I like the supacaz finishing tape that I use it to apply it flat on the top section on the aero bar. You guys need to give more of that finishing tape.... That's gold!
Just wrapped my bars with Supacaz oil slick colors, and man it looks amazing. Thanks for this awesome helpful video. That tip at the end with the two dots is genius! Thanks again!
Some good tips for sure! Like the marking of the bar tape for the cut, plus putting the piece of finish tape only on the bar tape and not overlapping onto the bar - - looks more "finished." But, have to say I'm not a fan of the figure 8 around the shifters.
Could you update this video showing the proper wrapping direction for the drops (clockwise for right, ccw for left) and the tops (front to back over the top).
I’ve been racing and riding road for almost 30 years and I’ve always wrapped the top of the bars front to back across the top so that when you’re holding the tops of the bars the natural twisting direction of your hands “tightens” the tape. Same in the drops. I’m always twisting my hand inward so I wrap outside to inside. You’ll get many opinions on the drops but I’ve never seen any pro wrap back to front on the bar tops. Going to try out your tape as I’ve heard good things.
You can pretty much figure out a way to do the hood section to get any combo you like, tops should pretty much always be front to back but if you want to wrap the drops inward or outward is up to you on whether you think you roll out or in more
They to it that way because otherwise the colores stars are hidden. You are correct, they are not. The 8 figure is not a pro-tip, it’s ugly and incorrect.
@@AlvaroQF All you have to do to get the graphics on the outside is unroll the tape and start from the other end. That is actually mentioned in a video Supacaz did.
I love my Supacaz bar tape. Thank you for the tutorial. Could you do a second one for the Supacaz Kush Star Fade? I've wrapped mine so that the fade transition is at the hoods, but it took several tries to get the transition to line up properly. I'm sure there must be an easier way to do it that trial-and-error like I did! A videeo with tips would be much appreciated when I go to renew my tape! Thank you.
Well, you got it wrong then. The wrap on the tops is backwards and the little finishing point should end up @ the bottom of tge bar not the top or front.
Changed both sides while referring to this video, after the first side the other is way easier. But overall it's not that hard! You can make a lot of mistakes and re-wrap a lot of times, it sticks just fine. One thing not stressed enough in the video is how hard you actually have to pull the tape so there are no gaps at the back way easier. The hardest part was the start for me when i wrapped my first side.
Many pros don't figure 8, that's how you can end up with a lump behind your STI lever. Pros cut a strip to cover the metal band and then roll the tape in a continual clockwise direction. The key is to get the wrap just underneath the lever, so the tape just touches the lever body, then continuing around the lever once, and then on to the top of the handlebar. No looping back around with figure eights. If done correctly, it looks 100% cleaner and distortion free. No bulge on the backside of the shift lever.
That is a grat video. Managed to wrap my handlebars first time. I'm very satisfied with the result and there is absolutely no need for any adjustments. Brillant. Thank You Supacaz
This worked great! I do wish there was a replay of the figure eight for the other side, though. Hard to know if it should be mirror or what. All the same, turned out great and I have sent this link to friends. I bought a used bike and whoever wrapped the handlebars didn't know about the hoods having places to snap in!
This one seems to get more things wrong than right. Direction of tape on the drops is debatable - but across the tops should always be towards the rider. Electrical tape to secure cables is okay if you're in a rush that's all you've got, but it's much better to use a non-stretchy tape to keep the cables tight to the bars and to stop them moving around underneath the bar tape. You should try to finish the wrap underneath the bars, not on top. It's much neater, and it's less likely to get caught on things and start to unravel that way.
Just to all of the comments about "winding in the wrong direction", Supacaz has coloured stars on only one side (left or right) of the tape. Wouldn't the need to leave the same side of the tape exposed before and after the figure 8 necessitate a change of winding direction? This wouldn't be an issue with a regular tape that has left/right symmetry.
@@mccalljeff nah, you wrap inside from the bottom and out side on the top, this prevents unwrapping whilst gripping , there’s is only one “propa” way …. Wrapping from the top first is wrong too as this method will have the drops unwrap due to the direction of overlap
the cutting is genius. but wondering why many tutorial including this one wrapping the top section with direction outward instead of inward to the rider? won't it come loose with hand twisting motion?
I would have done the opposite; inwards towards rider at bottom and top. Logic being the wrist load is on the inside, so tends to pull tape tighter when in use.
Becareful of the new Supacaz reflective series. Those ones dont stretch. They are more of a foam material. I tried installing them like my other supacaz tape (i have at least installed over 8 of them in the last couple years on my bikes) and the new reflective ones ripped. So just be careful and dont need to fully stretch if you bought that kind.
How does this compare to the Cannondale Synapse Hi-Mod (not thenew model). Im referung to the one you have for lon-term review few years ago, the one you loved so much 😉. Is it better and how so?
My bike shop did mine on 3 bikes and all of them show more of the stars on one side than the other. I’ve had similar issues with other brands when I’ve done it myself. What’s the answer? I hoped you’d explain here.
Derek Newton If you are referring to the Supacaz Galaxy tape as seen in the video, then you’ll need to unravel the entire roll and start from the “opposite side” of the roll when wrapping the other side of your handlebars. Maintain the same overlap and spacing and you will get both sides looking fly 👍
There are thousands of wrapping videos but this is one of the best because it carefully explains how to wrap in a FIGURE OF 8 and HOW TO CUT THE FINAL END neatly. Highly recommended.
How do you stretch the bling type? The material is so different and I could hardly stretch it alas the installation is no where near this. I’m sure supacaz has tested this material before selling it.
He failed to mention that you wrap in the direction of slip. That means the bottom right is wrapped clockwise and the left is counter clockwise. The top bar is wrapped in the same direction for both left and right, towards you.
@@rickdoehler502 , here is a trick I use with electrical tape which I find goes to mush in the heat of the sun. Wrap the electrical tape very tightly; add enough extra wrap to finish on the bottom side of the handlebar, add an additional 5cm or 2 inches, cut; here is the HINT - glue the inside of the electrical tape for 2cm/ 1 inch with "Super Glue"; stretch tape around bottom, squeeze out excess glue (use paper towel or facial tissue between hands & glue); cut electricl tape to end on underside, press with paper for short period of time. Yeah you're right. Most people twist away on the drops so the inner to outer wrapping on that section was fine but should've reversed to retain an inner to outer rotation on the hoods and front to back on the tops to account for the direction of grip load and stress.
Hi Supacaz I’m looking to buy black and white bar tape but on all of the pictures whatever I saw the white side ends on top of the handlebar and black one on the bottom. Is it possible to do it otherwise?
