Very detailed and easy to understand explanation. Why is there 3 Tracks(L,R and Ch1) when I record a boom on Ch1? What is the meaning of L, R additionally with Ch1? My setup is just one MKH416 connected to CH1 on MixPre3 and I am trying to record talking head.. Should I just get rid of L and R? Is L and R really required for single Mic setup? What is the purpose of L and R?
Its nice to see Sound Devices bringing out more affordable recorders for lowly soundies like me. Ive wanted a Sound Devices recorder for years but they've been the reserve of the working professional up to now, but I hope it doesn't mean a drop in pro quality. I'd hate to upgrade to the new mixpre II only to discover its not much better than a Zoom or Tascam, I'm looking for better convertion and preamps SD are known for.
They do make things better. @CurtisJudd has some videos on the II series that shows their new features and how they stack up against the new Zoom products, and whether an upgrade to the II series is worth it or not. 👍
Sound advice ... except that you couldn't have bought a MixPre a long time ago because they are pretty new. I likely would have bought one back when I sprung for the Zoom H6 because I had use my friends Sound Devices 702 so I know how good their equipment is. But they were a couple of grand back then back then and they still sell for over $1000 used. Now Sound Devices has equipment in the range I could consider buying to support my hobby. So my advice to everyone watching this video is take Kevin's advice. He knows of what he speaks. Take advantage of the the availability of increasingly better equipment for less money. And you can not possibly go wrong buying Sound Devices equipment. It works. It's built like a tank. And it holds his resale value too. Kevin, I love your new crazy antics. Makes for fun viewing and drives the points home too.
DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT, THE BATTERY SLED EASILY FALL AND IT WILL BE BROKEN AND YOU'LL BE FORCED TO BUY ANOTHER ADAPTER THAT WILL COST YOU ANOTHER MONEY. GET ZOOM F6 INSTEAD. IT WILL COST YOU ANOTHER $99 JUST TO MIX THE AUDIO BETTER.
I was reading the manual of mixpre3 to looking for about the audio editing, but i didnt find any functions like trim, devide, copy, cut tipically of portable digital recorder. Please can you let me know?
Loved this, especially on a Monday morning before work. I bought the MixPre3 when it came out, after Curtis' review and have been using it ever since. Love his channels and yours. And the courses...
Thanks Kevin. If you were to purchase one or the other, would you 1. Purchase an extra camera in order to have a second angle of footage for matching up in editing, or would you 2. Spend the same amount on this recorder? Take note that a second angle could be achieved with a cheap but useable existing camera like a GoPro. Your thoughts ( :
Man that's a tough one. It depends on what you are shooting - for RUclips type talking head videos, I'd stick to one camera unless you're wanting to shoot b-roll and stuff and don't want to dismount the camera or something. These multiple shots don't always look that great on RUclips videos. If I were doing a lot of corporate interviews type things, for sure, two cameras. It also depends on what audio recorder you already have? If you've got nothing, sure, go for it, you won't be disappointed. If you've got a Zoom H6 or H4n, well, maybe. I'd have to know what you are shooting, or intend to shoot, and what gear you already have to give you a solid answer.
Wow, now that's a quick reply. Yes I realized after I sent my question I didn't include what kind of audio I had or what I was shooting. Right now I have a cheap but ok lav and a decent boom mic which needs to be connected directly to a camera. My footage will be both story tellers seen as a featured person, kind of like what you would see in a clean room after the event, telling how they survived, and footage that will be more film-like with voice overs and lots of B-role.@@BasicFilmmaker
Hmmm...I'd go for the extra cameras as long as you can also hook up the audio to it cleanly. If you're not used to recording separated audio, there's a learning curve, and maybe you should practice doing that first with something like a cheaper $80-$90 recorder. I don't know how your audio sounds right now either. If it works for you into the camera, heck, go for the camera. A sample of what you have would be better to determine it. I checked out your channel and only two videos from something like 6 years ago - I don't think that's what you're trying to do at this point I assume.
Yeah those vids are way old and not what I'm doing now. Those existing episode were just for community service shot on an iPhone 3, the only thing I had at the time. It's taken me this long to acquire basic equipment though I have a background of filmmaking from yester-year. I understand multiple concepts but the equipment is so much more complex now, so your insights are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Yes, mics going straight into camera would be much easier so maybe I can live with that.
Thinking of buying one of these for the 32-bit recording, 1500db dynamic range is perfect for recording my project of exploding the entire universe in one shot (big bang 2), though in the meantime might use it for recording the master bus from my mixer.
Hi Kevin, Well I don´t get which tracks are which in the software (Adobe premiere pro cc or audition). I name the tracks but the names don´t show up. Just Channel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. What does that mean. How do I know which channel is which track? Thank you so much.

I've been an audio engineer and producer for nearly 3 decades. I'm helping my son get his RUclips channel together and got him the Zoom H6 and a Shure Broadcast headset mic for audio. Watched this video on the MixPre-3 and wished I had known about it earlier. I'm getting great sound from the H6, still you're giving me GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). What to do... Do you HEAR a significant difference between the two, or is your biggest reason for upgrading more of a functionality issue, i.e. the knobs vs. click buttons? Are the MixPre3's A/D converters way better? On the fence! Thanks, you rule Master Filmmaker! Nothing Basic about you Brother!!! You've really got it down when it comes to presenting technical information in a way that's very easy to understand! Mad props!
Double posting. Happens sometimes. Really, the MixPre-3 is awesome, but, there's NOTHING wrong with the H6. I still have it, it works, and it's awesome. I really needed another recorder, and I wanted something to do live streaming, and I did not want to move things in my setup from one place to another, adjust, then move back to the studio. I was considering another H6, but decided for another $150, why not go "pro". Well, it's not pro, but close enough. If you're looking at having a second mixer/recorder, sure, go with the MixPre-3. If you're just got GAS going on, sure. But again, nothing wrong with using the H6.
thanks for this. can i use the mixpre-3 ii with the rode video mic pro + via the 3.5 jack? are there limitations to this quality wise compared to using a xlr shotgun mic? thanks so much for your thoughts.
Does it automatically back up your recordings as it goes, in case battery suddenly dies? I now fully hate the h4n for not saving my 40 minute file when the battery died. Major fault
I have had a MixPre 3 for several years, but this year it has become unreliable and now it is totally dead. I loved this unit the unit was easy to operate and gave me outstanding results. I do Multicam recordings of live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. I used a Rode NT4 with it. I contacted Sound Devices and they told me it would be a minimum of $250 US but they want a $400 US pre approval. A new MixPre 3 is a lot more expensive than when I originally bought it. I thought it was going to be a purchase for life. I don’t know if I should fix this unit, buy a new MixPre 3 or buy a Zoom F3.
Just a few questions... Is there any safety track features on this model? Can you record on tracks at different levels? And if so, how many mics can you record with if using this feature? I'm seriously considering getting this, as I just rented an F4 and hated it.
Yes, yes, four. It would be worth your while to go to the link I provide before purchasing either the Mixpre3 or MixPre6. I did this before buying two MixPre3s, and glad I didn’t get the F4. school.learnlightandsound.com/courses/sound-devices-mixpre?affcode=15164_5dqcnikr
Love my MixPre 3-II. The best recorder in its class hands down. So versatile, so capable, so indestructible, so reliable, so fun to use, so portable, I reach for it every time I need to record audio, whether at home or in the field, in a temporary setup or in a more permanent role like when it sits on my desk as an audio interface for my voiceover work. Not enough praise for this little guy. Just hope SoundDevices rethinks the power supplying strategy and the awkward power switch placement in their next iteration.
@@BasicFilmmaker Yeah, tell me about it! I keep thinking one of these days I'm going to fashion some sort of extension for it and glue it on with some hot-glue. In the meantime, I just leave it in the on position and plug/unplug the USB-C cable when needed, it serves as the power switch.
Hey Kevin.. so now that the MixPre 3 II is out.. you upgrading? I sold my MixPre 10t and purchased the MixPre 3 II. Turns out I dont need 8 inputs, but the idea of 32-bit audio with no blowouts sounds a lot more appealing. Look forward to your review.

Kevin, hi! How long does this recorder work from a unit with 4 AA batteries? I saw a review that he barely survives 15 minutes on 4 batteries. Is it true?
Not sure about 15 minutes, but yes, very limited. The AAs are for emergency. If you were going to use battery power, you would get the sled for it which uses two Sony L mount batteries.
With a hdmi cable the recorder can start with the camera. I have a Sony A7Riii - anyone here who can tell that the synchrounos start of both recordings works well?

Is your shirt on inside out? Great Video!!! You couldn't have made that decision to get the mixpre 3 instead of all the other stuff, it was only available since Apr 19, 2017
Only 2 years old - huh. Not so bad. and LOL! That's how the shirt is made. Otherwise, the label that says, "Guess Jeans" on the right would say, "snaeJ sseuG." :)

Great video! Love my MixPre 3, I use it as a usb audio interface too. I knew that Curtis Judd fellow must have a dark side, no one could be making awesome RUclips videos that long and be that polite
Nice. I am delving into this deeply now. An yeah, he's a really nice guy - but has a dark side. When I saw him at NAB, I say "Hey!" to him, and he said "Hey man!!" back. Dark - very dark. :)
I'm so glad the H6 does everything I need so I don't have to save up for one of these. 🙂 Yes, a knob would be nice for the headphone though, but I'll suffer through. 🙂
Fun video! My audio path was Zoom H1, Zoom H5, and Zoom F4. Guess I'm a Zoom boy! Along the way I mixed in a Focusrite 2i2 a Saramomic SmartRig+ and a bunch of microphones. LOVE that MixPre3, but I got the ZoomF4 on sale at B&H for $449, and now I'm just waiting for Curtis Judd's $39 course! Curtis really rocks when it comes to audio advice!
@@BasicFilmmaker Curtis has announced he's working on a course for the Zoom F4 so I just need to be patient. In the meantime, I'm familiarizing myself with Zoom F4. I'll be OK, but he's always able to add value.
Me again How do I get it to record at the same time I press the record on my video camera then it might work for me. By the way My video is 99% Model airplanes.
I haven't figured that out yet, I have to review Curtis' course again, but he does mention hooking these two together so the camera and the audio recorder fire together. Since you're shooting 99% model airplanes, I'm not sure you would need this level of recorder, as the airplane noise is going to be oud enough to be captured on the camera?
I forgot to mention I use the recorder to pick up the bypassing planes but alss use the 4 tracks of my ZOOM H4n Pro to record the remote mics I place on the Pilots
Huh. That's pretty cool! I'm not sure you need anything better, unless you just want something better, or plan to use this unit for other purposes. Do you use battery or AC power at the airstrips? You'd need to get some beefy Sony L Mount batteries and the extra sled for this - it eats 4-AAs in about anywhere from 30-60 minutes. If you're using AC, no problem.

The only problem is one doesn't know the good stuff from the crap ... Every hobby/Profession has a Dollar learning curve and nothing anyone, including you can change that. Spent another $2000+ on a prosumer Video camera. Takes wonderful Video and only wish it had two stereo tracks of audio like my LX-1 OH it has HD woppie every one watches YOU TUBE on a crap 14" laptop anyway. Love the video, and enjoyed viewing it, It was educational and funny, and I thought it was awesome to see Cutis Judd!
Thanks Eri! Yep, Curtis a great guy. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Yes he is...every time I need information and I ask him, he provides the answer quietly. Thanks for the video. Its awesome!
@@Eddie696ful 👍👍👍
In your storytime photo do you were a Starfleet science uniform?
It's a jacket that sort of looks like one. been looking for more but apparently they don't make them anymore.
I was using the zoom f8 but now use the mix pre 6. I love how easy it is to name the tracks when doing location sound.
True that. Haven't done the keyboard hookup thing yet, but excited to try. Haven't seen any new videos from you in a while. Busy busy, busy?
@@BasicFilmmaker Yes, I lost my day job so I have been shooting a lot of projects to pay the bills. All my gear has been on jobs. It all made it back on Thursday so I shot a video yesterday. The video will be up on Tuesday. I'm going to try to shoot one more before the gear goes back out in a few days.
Nice! Looking forward to it!
@@shiwomino5775 Safety tracks are for recorders with digital limiters. There is no need to use a safety track with the analog limiters on the mix Pre 3 or 6.
Thank you sir!! 🙏
Amazing video! So much effort!
Thanks Carlo! It was a lot of fun, and Curtis was great being willing to do this. :)
You are one funny dude. Thanks for making me laugh my "Beep" off. You got yourself another subscriber. The info was great and I'm planning on getting one.
Thanks Jeff! Still have mine, still love it.
Just bought my second one! Just because I loved the first one so much!
Nice!! I have two myself. Love this thing!!
Enjoyed your video. Commenting here so that RUclips will love you as much as I do.
Thank you!
That was unbelievably fun (and informative).
Thank you!!! :) 👍
😂 I just love your videos. Really in-depth product reviews and filled with fun. Can´ t stop laughing 🤣😂 .... see you in the next one 😆 [🇩🇰]
Thanks FRISLEV FILM! A lot of work goes into these and comments like yours mean a lot. :)
SOLD!
Yeah. I have two. Love them.
Saw you IG post.. yea.. This is now in my wishlist.. Love what this does.. wow
Awesome! Thanks Brian!
This is a great video. Thanks for making it.
Thanks OutLaw!
I'm so glad the H6 does everything I need so I don't have to save up for one of these. 🙂 Yes, a knob would be nice for the headphone though, but I'll suffer through. 🙂
Other than this MixPre-3, the H6 is an AWESOME audio recorder. Still love it, but for my needs, I had to get the MixPre-3 - not for everyone. :)
Probably, I will not buy MixPre, bcs I have Tascam DR60, but this is one of the better videos I've been watching. Nice job!
Thanks!! And yeah, the DR60 is great too!!
Wouldn't his Zoom F8/F8n course work? Don't know if similar or not: bit.ly/CurisJuddZoomF8Course
@@BasicFilmmaker Curtis has announced he's working on a course for the Zoom F4 so I just need to be patient. In the meantime, I'm familiarizing myself with Zoom F4. I'll be OK, but he's always able to add value.
Well, I think we should get Curtis and do some butt kicking then! You first. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Whoa, whoa, whoa, gents. Looking like I may be able to finish up that course over the upcoming holiday. :-D
Curtis Judd Wasn't me. Art hacked my comments (gulp). :)
NOW this is good edutainment.
😁
Wow. I have no idea what that was about. 😂 great vid BFM!
LOL! Me neither. :) Thanks Scott!
AC only available during Special shows other wise it batteries only but thanks for the great channel
👍👍👍
Maaan, that rock dude reminds a lot of Tommy Chong on The 70's Show! Funny as heck too, please do more of these :D
P.S. Did you have to dye your beard or just got a fake one for the bit? :)
LOL! I just grabbed my wife's mascara and swiped over the beard. Oh...don't tell her. :)
This was great!
Thanks IMDABROWN!
In the news, a podcaster allegedly struck his Past Self with a 2x4 to get him to buy better equipment. The police suspect he was using a sounding board.
LMAO!!!! I love s**t like that! LOL!! :)
I bloody hope it’s not 48kg’s haha nice video! 👌
😂😂😂
4:41 - 48 kg ??? Where is the point? I thought it was 0.48kg
An obvious mistake. Thanks!
I stay for the camp tbh.
😂😂😂
48 Kilogram ??
Yeah, that would be a little heavy. 🙂
HA! Yep - always something in these videos. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker As long as it is funny it´s always good. Don´t see you doing it in real life :)
Doing what...being like that??? That's pretty much me - sometimes it scares people. And yeah, I mess up these non-yank measurements all the time in real life. And you wonder why the states has yet to change to the simple metric system. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Hey, it takes a real man to haul around a 100 pound recorder though. 😜
"Weight is 48 kilograms or 16.8 ounces... " all while tossing it gingerly in the air! yanks sure do struggle with metric 😂
We're very strong. LOL! :)
.
Can you dimm/turn off all those colorful lights in the menu ? In some situations you don't want to have all those lights coming from the top of your camera. BTW looks like a f** toy !!
Yep. Screen brightness is a setting.
great job bud! you're hilarious and i luv your irrelevant dadaist humor)
Thanks very much!!
future-me self
👍😀
great video totally "sound" advice
LOL!! I love dem puns!!!
Loved the video i could use a sound recorder lol you have so many jk
Yep. A long road of spent money. Great for learning, better on the pocketbook to just buy the good stuff. At some point I need to have an internet RUclips "garage" sale.
The only problem is one doesn't know the good stuff from the crap ... Every hobby/Profession has a Dollar learning curve and nothing anyone, including you can change that. You just have to pay your dues. Example I bought a Canon DSLR to do video after my Canon LX-1 broke ... $1500 wasted before I realized that DSLR's aren't worth a SCHEIT for Video. Spent another $2000+ on a prosumer Video camera. Takes wonderful Video and only wish it had two stereo tracks of audio like my LX-1 OH it has HD woppie every one watches YOU TUBE on a crap 14" laptop anyway. OH why DSLR's don't work for my type of video because the lens aren't PARFOCAL
Such is the life - but, I must say, for someone I know and trust, like Curtis, I would have listened and saved me some money.
Yup Me too Hind sight is 20 20 Still there is a learning curve with every thing and it does get expensive.
True that!
Hahahahaha omg😂😂😂
