Outside of the Ashworth connection, the only reason i can think Southgate is being linked aside from building the most successful and promising English squad in 58 years, is Southgates man management and squad harmony attributes.
ETH is a disaster of a man manger and just seems to upset too many players.
Perhaps one of the biggest issues behind the scenes is factions in the squad from ETH poor people skills and frankly bizarre decisions.
Often the most talented player's need a leader they'll fight for, not a drill sergeant. Drill sergeants help less talented player's who rely on doggedness and organisation rather than expansive expressive football

Reports stating the players are no longer listening to the gaffer would suggest that at some point they did listen to the manager. I have never seen any signs of that being true.

ten Hag has not shown enough to keep the job, we need to move on, but Southgate isn't moving on, that would be catastrophic, similar to Liverpool's appointment of Roy Hodgeson

10. No squad depth, player from LVG era still at the club. Should have been sold long ago.

Do we need to start questioning INEOS. We are in May and we still don't have a sporting director or a head of recruitment. Without these appointments who the hell in at Utd has the experience or know how to appoint the next manager. They are dithering at the moment. They either have to come out and back the manager or sack him now. It makes no sense to sack him after the FA cup final because then we have to bed in a new manager and a new sporting structure, its too much change at the same time.

The biggest loss for Erik was losing Martinez. Last season you can see he had a leadership quality that demanded players raise theur game. Also very physical and rattled opposing players. Losing him also had a huge impact on Eriks style of football

The Gareth Southgate speculation concerns me as well. If they appointed him as manager I would have to seriously question Ineos. I genuinely want to believe in what their doing, but they would make it very hard to do that if they seriously believe that Gareth Southgate is the man for United!
