Life is difficult - for everyone. So could you imagine what it's like for someone suffering from ALS. ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is an illness which basically prevents your brain from talking to your muscles. As a result, muscles die. And a result of that? The inability to move ANY part of the body. But that's not even the worst part of it all - could you imagine?! The worst part is that ALS does not affect the cognitive process. It rarely affects the eyes and it doesn't affect the sense of hearing. In other words, the person is there, emotionally, spiritually, and consciously; they know exactly what is going on. As one put it, "I am trapped in my own body."
We have to feel ones pain, so much so, that it's as if we're in the mind of the one who is suffering - and only then will we truly understand.
Only then will we understand, that their silence is just another word for their pain.
Our dear friend Mendy Rosenberg suffers from this horrific disease. Mendy has taught me that although he cannot control what ALS is doing to his body, he can control what he thinks about it. If he found a way to inspire people, to remind people that life is a gift, to pour ice water on his head, then we, with our gifts of life, can surely make a difference. Shimi Adar
