Your Xenoblade 2 guides helped me enjoy that combat system a ton more than I did trying to figure it out on my own. I've been a Trails fan for years (played the Sky games, the Crossbell games, and working my way through Cold Steel 2 now), so I was super excited to see this thumbnail. I don't know about anyone else, but if you made in depth build/party guides for all the Cold Steel games, I would eat that up.
For anyone who hasn't yet played any of the The Legend of Heros games, a brief history. The creators behind these games are among the OGs of the RPG genre. They're also behind the Ys series another fantastic RPG series that I can not recommend enough. TLoH series is a macropolitical series spaning decades of history, war, and nations. These games are insanely dialouge heavy and are more akain to a novel series, with relationships and character development galore. That said the combat and systems are just as intricate as the ongoing story across different trilogies, with highly addictive game play loops. If you're a long time RPG fan and have not played any of the TLoH games or even the Ys games, I recommend starting from The Trails of Cold Steel for TLoH. As for Ys, start with Dana's Lacrimosa, perhaps one of the best RPGs I have ever played. Edit: I want to make huge point about this. The Legend of Heros series of games are unlike any other RPGs ever made. Each game is 100+ hours of play, and each game links into the next game, and even the next Trails trilogy, that includes characters, lore, and importantly plot. This is a story of charcaters, relationships, and nations, that has quite literally spanned decades of games. If you love that kind of depth in a novel series, there are no other games that will provide that experience except The Legend of Heros games.
Love these games. Just wish they could shorten their localization pipeline. Kuro 2 is already coming out this year in Japan and we probably wont get Kuro 1 till 2024.
@@Keltrick- I really wish it did. These long delays between games are awful. I tried the overlay for Cold Steel 3 originally when that wasn’t localized yet, and it just was so cumbersome and really ruined my experience so I gave up after chapter 2. It kinda ruined my momentum with the series, so now hoping that the Zero localization will be a re-igniting point for me to jump back on.
@@NoonDragoon I would honestly recommend you play the Crossbell Duology before continuing CS3. There's going to be some context that just won't hit the same otherwise.
@@RedThunderSP I've actually already played the Geofront translations for Zero and Azure awhile ago, it was what originally got me so excited to play CS3 and try the overlay. I'm hoping going through Zero again will reinvigorate the spark I had.
A year later and this video is helping me now. I played for like 12 hours, hoping to grasp the nuances myself but the game doesn't explain everything, it seems. Absolutely didn't know that quartz slots with a single element type doubles the value of the quartz placed in it. I've always loved the customization in Trails games, especially when dealing with Master Quartz and their effects. Customizing characters usually take up a chunk of my playtime (Reverie with the boatload of characters took HOURS lol and got kind of tiring, Kuro feels like a return to normality). Kuro takes that customization several steps further with separating the "Arts" from the "Master Quartz" so you get Drivers and Hollows, as well as the quartz lines now having a use, and extra abilities upon equipping quartz once the values add up. Add on Arts Plugins on top of that too.
Almost finished my blind Abyssal run of Hajimari (Lloyd is insane, facetanks everything), decided to check out Kuro combat for when it comes to PC. My face fell when I saw action combat, but then Kuro is turn based, all is right in the world.
I was already hyped for the game (as much as you can be hyped for a game that presumably releases in 2030 in the west), but if Enel says the battle system is good, then I'm really hyped!
I really loved Kuro! Especially the combat, it is super fun. By endgame, I ended up running 100% Crit Rate Van along with that +100% Critical DMG boost to sweep mob enemies, and using both Agnes and Quatre as powerful Casters, with Agnes prioritizing Primary Elements and support, and Quatre with Higher Elements for massive DMG, both of them also having access to an Art that grants ATS and ADF up. Quatre's just really good thanks to his Craft that gives a Shield to all units in an area. I ended up having Bergard as my fourth party member with expensive Arts as extra support, and prioritizes heavy damage.
Ooooh, I didn't think you'd take on Kuro no Kiseki...at least not yet. I played this game at launch and am about to go back to it, this series really got me XD
I just recently, as of last december, got into the Kiseki Series. I love these games so far, started with Trails in the Sky and I'm just about at the end of SC. Hoping to play Trails from Zero when it releases in English. I'll look forward to using all the tips I learn in this video in about thirty years when Kuro get's its english dub. JK, but it's still going to be a long time...
Thank you Enel, am a huge trails of fan but was not excited for the kuro games because the change to arpg but I think I am now excited thanks to this vid
I'm not willing to buy a ps4 and fiddle with it just to get the overlay working. But, this video is definitely good for drumming up hype for a game that's probably not going to leave Japan for a long time.
I'm about to start playing Kuro, and I really like some of these changes. The change too Arts is particularly interesting and almost seems like a weird sort of compromise between the way Arts worked before and during the Cold Steel games.
You are a true hero. After 10 games of basically the same battle system, trying to understand/adapt to this new one without being able to read Japanese has been such a trial. So glad I found this. Thank you so much!
I'm still at sky SC(and probably will be untill I finish xenogears and SMT V and maybe even Xenobalde 3 depending on how much it takes me to finish the first two) but I'm really hyped to get to kuro, this gameplay looks awesome, it feels like the fusion between ys and kiseki that I wanted Tokyo Xanadu to be.
Highly recommended playing all the games but fair warning , this series has one of the most sprawling and interconnected naratives ever so I recommend playing the games in release order if you don't mind playing a couple older games , though if you do , play the following list inreverse order : The sky trilogy first , the Crossbell duology ( Zero and Azure - though sadly these games don't have an official english localization ) and then the Cold Steel games
I preffered to stay off this vid until I was almost done with the game, experiencing it for myself fully immersed with no outside influence. I just think it's funny how I ended up setting up my Van almost identical from focus on Fatal Lancer EX and revenge arrow to going for critical focus. Also, smite me if you must, but I personally use Quatres more than Risette because I prefer a 4k damage shield with an offensive stat boost craft on my team over the defensive alternative. I have Agnès handle the defensive stat boosts and damage shields in between Lapras codes. Otherwise my typical party is Van and Agnès locked down, Quatres or Risette for offensive casting + damage shield crafts then either Judith for sepith steal craft or Bergard with a stun buildup focus and little side of defensive support.
Maybe try to understand them? Falcom isn't like MonolithSoft, they need 3rd party company for localization unlike Xeno series which work under big companies depending on the time (Square/Namco/Nintendo). Plus the script for Trails is infamous for being long mainly because of optional cutscenes. Even talking to NPC can be meaningful and the games often have plot branches even for just switching one party member to the dungeon (this game is no exception, meaning every cutscenes with different plot branch need to be translated)...

Trails in the sky is the first arc of the series and all are on steam. Some of the games are on switch or are coming to switch later on but you can find everything for PC pretty easily as of right now
Is it also worth watcing out for which abilities gives the highest number of hits (increasing the Damage Bonus from chain) ? Or is it just a negligeable bonus ?
I personally could get by without worrying too much about it, especially considering that in most boss battles you don't get a lot of consecutive turns unless you land a well-timed stun after a good few turns. But there is an achievement reward for obtaining a 100-hit combo which is really nice if you can get it early. From my experience the easiest way to rack it up would probably be figuring out which art lands the most hits per target and use that art in a mob group. Otherwise I know Feri lands 8 hits with her basic attack, Quatres and Agnès also land a good number of hits per basic attack.
