  • 500 Mbit, 1Gbit, 1.6 Gbit, 2 Gbit. Broadband internet speeds are becoming faster and more accessible in the UK.
Imagine then what life would be like if you had to downgrade to 5Mbit. That’s right, not 50 Mbit, 5 Mbit. How would your home internet experience change? What would happen to internet browsing, watching videos on RUclips, listening to streaming music, and all the other daily tasks we now take for granted?
Let me share my personal experience. I had to use a 5Mbit connection for a week while on holiday abroad. I used the same MacBook I've been using for several years, the one I use to edit all these videos.

Who is that in the thumbnail?

I spent a year living and working in Cyprus. At home I would get about 15 MB down. And in work about 25mbps. I relied on the Internet a lot more there as it was my only way to keep in touch and find out what was happening back home

Thanks for your feedback. I noted the internet for browsing is still remarkably usable for browsing and watching videos at these speeds. The issues arise when you try and download larger files such as system updates. Are you in a major city in Cyprus or more rural?

@@studioidris i’m not there now this was back in 2017. I wasn’t near a major city it was on the coast with mostly tourists. About a 20 minute drive from Ayia Napa. Another thing from back then mobile data seem to be very expensive the most you could get was like maybe 20 GB. And it was about €60.

I have asked EE for an upgrade to the latest router. Once this arrives, I will create an updated video reviewing the service with the new router.

Some odd results, to me it seems some sites are prioritised, further suggested by the varied DNS times. The fact your "5mbps" loaded 4K youtube in seconds tells me RUclips was somehow getting at least 15mbps, i've never seen 4K youtube possible below 10mbps. At home when I only had 6mbps, 1080p60 was about the best I could get. Your provider seems to be throttling google/basic web browsing. I just tried those same websites on a 2mbps connection and they loaded around double as fast as the tests you conducted. Some strange forces are at work here

I made sure no one else in the home was using the connection, but it appears the bit of bandwidth I had was being shared with others, perhaps the neighbours. The fact that I was in Pakistan browsing a website hosted in the UK also resulted in latency issues.

Forgive me but it looks like you have Opera VPN enabled which would obviously create a lot of additional latency and overhead. Was this intentional? If not it's rather... misleading of a test.

Thank you for your comment. Opera does have a built in VPN but it is disabled during this test. The icon is always there - perhaps a marketing ploy, as you can purchase a more enhanced VPN through the browser.

The VPN icon is PURPLE when connected to the VPN and is see-through with purple text when it's disconnected.
At 2:28, if he was connected to the VPN, the VPN logo would look like the Home logo on the left.
He is *NOT* connected to Opera VPN.

This is just crying. My first internet connection was 1200baud - as in 150 bytes per second...

Sure, but files weren't nearly as big. The Google homepage is 987kB; that's 2hrs on a 150bps connection. 5Mbps in 2024 is unacceptable.

The internet is usable, and you will get used to the delay in downloading web pages. When you are forced to use this speed for a prolonged period, you will adapt your browsing habits, for example, going back to scheduled downloads and extensive updates overnight when the network is less busy.
