Coach Nick details the issues this team has defensively against a team that pales in comparison to the kind of talent they'll face once the Olympics start. They're lucky LeBron James bailed them out with a last second layup.

South Sudan exposed just how lacking our defense is
Was it lacking against Canada? Serbia?
Sudan is a good team. What happened is US got used to using pure athleticism to beat these teams, S. Sudan is just as athletic, US got caught lacking and had to use a cheat code to win
@@simonhowell4486uhhh……
they scored 100 points. Lol
They wont shoot like that again
@@simonhowell4486Sudan were 43.5-point underdogs going into the game.
Embiid is getting exposed. He's an 80w/90s center in the modern league, but international ball is even less that way.
Team USA ran into some real African soldiers
And won.
@@daveydeluxe1677 thanks to a no call
You jest, but that's exactly what happened.
They're a bad match-up for US. They match our athleticism, just not our experience.
It's funny, I think the European teams will beat them, but the US will consistently struggle against them and all other African teams
@simonhowell4486 European teams can't match the US's athleticism, which is why they smoked Serbia. South Sudan is not only unknown but has the length and athleticism to bother team usa.
When USA meets the gold contenders, they gonna have to bench embiid
This should be a good reminder, that there won't be many easy games for team USA on the international stage anymore.
This is the reality and as an All Blacks fan, I understand this feeling.
It must happen for the good of the game.
Isn't this the only close game they had?
@@jayjones251Nope, Australia gave them hell too
LeBron lost a bunch on the international stage. He shoulda been preparing these guys.

Seeing Shayok do his best KD impression since I last saw him play on the 2020 6ers was very fun
Funny thing is, I remember when he declared for the draft, his draft profile mentioning he shoots like KD
Haha I feel you. I’m a hornets fan. Seeing jt Thor hit that step back 3 over bron had me feeling a little proud lmao
I love how South Sudan, not known to be a basketball nation, almost beat USA.

@@paihobbes8680 I've never witnessed a draw in basketball before. Never thought it was possible 🤔
I just remembered Kobe when he was with the Redeem Team, he keeps telling everyone that he will focus on being the most hard nosed defender on the Olympic basketball stage. Kobe Bryant, a superstar scorer, focuses on being a good defender.
That’s not on the stat sheets so everyone will brush it off
Wade outplayed that dead r4pist in the olympics 😂😂😂
Yes, because in the nba he was taking 25-30 shots a game, so he couldn’t. On team U.S.A. it goes down to 10, so he has more energy to be great on D.
I love Kobe but we gotta stop underestimating other players. You think these veteran players on the team were taking this Olympics for granted?
@@rfpchar Yes, yes I do. I think they really thought that they'd dogwalk everyone.
The Derrick white contest/block on the tip dunk is a phenomenal defensive play. What other 6ft guard would make that play.
in the end team usa was like the secret service...luck he missed last shot
They lucky by hitting so many contested 3s
I don't think USA will take anyone easy after this. And I am Serb. As much as you were lucky, you didn't shot the ball well. Your biggest problem is the ego management, that's all.
The biggest problems are subpar coaching, lackluster offensive execution and defensive IQ...ego management isn't remotely an issue here. Have you actually been watching?
I wasn’t familiar with them, but the Serbian team with Jokic leading them are fun to watch. Can’t wait to watch them play Team USA again. May the best team win
@@ssnochevywhat do you think is the appropriate offensive/defensive sets they should apply moving forward?
@@ssnochevy isn't Embid starter because that was his condition? That's ego management. First thing I would change is put Davis in starting lineup instead of him.
@@ssnochevy I think the reason you don't recognize the need for ego management on an all star team is likely because you could use some yourself.
Can't stress this enough. The difference between playing 10-minute quarters to 12 minutes quarters. Forty minute game versus 48 minute game is massive. Bigger than people realise. In the NBA you can be up 17-20 points in 3rd or fourth quarter and STILL loose! In FIBA that 2 minutes less allows teams to keep it close with the USA, the moment they drop their guard these nations will go at them. A lucky bounce or call here and there, before you know it, out of time and the game can be lost. Teams can throw in junk defences, traps, set-plays and keep opponents guessing. This can keep lower ranked nations still very much able to win games, that look on paper like they are unwinnable. I love FIBA how players don't get special calls, all basketball should be ref'd this way.
South Sudan has no indoor basketball courts. They are literally a team of refugees. Awesome.
The country itself is only 13 years old.
Most of them are pros and some of them used to play in the NBA
@@guyoverthere3098Nice cover
No music feels so empty. Need my classic bballbreakdown royalty-free instrumental back!
that’s the problem with a team full of stars and number 1 or 2 options they usally have other players to play defence in the Nba but for the olympics it’s just a different game
yup. for sure
South Sudan, just like many African teams, bring more than basketball skills to the court-they carry the hopes of an entire continent. Their mission is bigger than the game itself, which drove them to come so close to victory. While the US has top-tier talent and experience, their narrow win serves as a reminder not to underestimate international teams. Many of these teams are eager to prove themselves against the best in the world, and it's exciting to see such strong competition on the court!
I hope they be like morocco in the last world cup if not better
Do they? Seems south Africa the only African country doing anything sporting wise....
7:06 I think both White and SSD#7 got a hand on the ball. And the non-call on the Edwards foul was a make-up for the non-call on AD getting fouled on the other end.
These kinds of games make me disappointed, that Embiid chose the cowards way (yet again) to play with the Dream Team, instead of Cameroon or France.
That France team would be insane
Why is it the "coward's way out"? Isn't he an American citizen?
he said something about cameroon's relationship with france or something

If USA lose, the loss will be on players in their prime like Embiid the 2023 MVP, AD who’s 32, Tatum and Booker who’re 26 or 27 … Not on a 39yo Lebron, a 36yo Curry and KD or a 22yo ANT.
You can’t blame a player who’s not in his prime anymore or hasn’t reach it yet, like Bron, Wade and Melo in 2004, you just can’t.
Poor coaching in the area of Playbook X's & O's, no cross-screens for Joel Embid.
Failure to call 2014 San Antonio Spurs style "Shuffle Cut Offense 1st pass to Joel Embid at the right wing. Or at least "Cross-Punch STS."

No help defense from Sth Sudan on that layup certainly came to bite them on the ass
@@meekmeadsyap alert
3:21 right here, i knew the add was coming, just the tone of him saying "BUT YOU CAN..." I already knew lol
7:04 Derek White's block of the tip in dunk looked clean to me. There was body contact, but he was vertical if not slightly moving back with the offensive player and did not displace or move into the offensive rebounder, got all ball up top. It was an incredible block.
7:08 I think Ant's foul might have been missed especially considering that weirdo explaination of the Shai foul to end end the Mavs-Thunder series even though at the basket this type of action where the swipe goes from ball to wrist is rarely called at the basket probably because there's usually a crowd and sight lines are limited. From the angle you showed, it looked like he got hand and ball and then more of the wrist, but it's not egregious. I thought that was pretty good defense at the end.
You were right to point out that Team USA kept failing to get back all throughout the first half and only cleaned up for the monster run in the 3rd. But I have to credit Royal Ivey for having some simple 5 on 4 early offense ready to go assuming that team USA has an older roster that doesn't want or can't hustle back, especially Embiid, Steph and Lebron :P
I think the USA should have two all stars and three high energy role players like derrick white on the court at all times. Theres no place for five guys walking back on defense
Hey Coach Nick, I like the part where you don’t expose LeFraud Blames at all. Except MAYBE the part where he showed “no urgency” when not contesting that one 3?
He was badly turning the ball over a few minutes into the game. He’s out there setting moving screens on smaller players, lowering his shoulder into them, and not getting called. He stands there like a statue on defense. He gets blown by constantly. He does NOT “always make the right play” like he claims. He almost always needs the ball in his hands to be successful, which just hurts the entire team. Worst of all he’s not a leader at all. That’s why this team is so underachieving. Their “leadership” is nonexistent!
the refs were told to not embarass team usa with a loss so they didn't call foul on the last play
Cause it wasn’t a foul
They also didn't call the obvious foul on AD on the lob, Gabriel pushing him with the forearm.
It’s like you didn’t watch the video lol refs missed both calls
@@YungGroveBoss this isn't the nba
Props to South Sudan on stepping it up and giving Team USA a scare, but Team USA should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. They had a 7-point lead with 3 minutes left and gave up an 8-0 run to a team they were 43.5-point favorites against. They better take this game as a wakeup call and get their defense in check because it's do or die from here on out.
2:53 That's why Jokic is a better Center than Embid. Getting double team with a height advantage with your marks and still a behind the back pass.

Exactly
Ah yes, winning games for missed calls and poor defensive play is what we call “skill” now.
Wrong. It was luck. Yes, there is luck in each and every sport.
It's like a regular season game where defense is not played. The key to watch for is if there's a lot of miscommunication on D for US or just efforts. If it's just efforts, which appears to be, they'll still be the team to beat. With Coach Spo a defensive expert, they haven't even played a lot of their stealth 3 point shooting 2 way line up KD / AD / JT / Holiday / White.
And some Analysts were tryna say this team is better than the dream team who average win margain was 30+. And against hall of fame International players.
Bro the dream team lost to some college kids
@@meguy9811yeah, just the first game where chuck daly decided to not play jordan in the 4th
Oh absolutely, because a team that dominated in a completely different era with no competition could obviously never be outdone by a modern team facing an even higher level of global talent and athleticism. Clearly, those analysts must be delusional, thinking that progress in sports is even possible. :D
@@WNCHSTR talent and skillls are different. A highly skilled unathletic player would workout someone who’s just talented. Duncan and Jokic are perfect examples. There’s a reason why international players say overseas leagues are tougher. Their basketball upbringing is skill based. While here in today’s America; AAU and high school don’t teach kids, it’s just organized pickup. And then only going to college for a year because they can’t go pro straight out of high school. And then of course the modern NBA rules that cater to a high scoring style of play that let players get away with a lot. Even added defensive 3 seconds so now centers can’t park in the paint. So when other players from highly skilled leagues come over here, AND have talent. They doing what Lukas doing. So when it come Olympic time, it’s a wake up call.
Think about this , Marial Shayok - was selected with the 54th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. ------ and he had the best game of his life vs the Worlds Best Players... A 54th Pick almost beat them.. haha. Bronny is the 55th pick..... thats kind of crazy....

Good analysis. I think our defense was better against Germany. On the last play by Sudan, White blocks Gabriel. There's a scramble for the ball and the clock runs out. I don't see any referee seeing a foul in that last second.

They got two stops at the end, meaning actual blocks. If South Sudan misses a couple of bunnies then I'd call it luck. They were on fire from 3 and USA was ice cold. Steph missed some wide open 3s. And embiid sucks.
I don’t know how you’d call the last possession a “stop”
The USA defense completely collapsed on the final play and USA has to commit domestic violence + assault and battery + grand theft auto + assault with a deadly weapon on Wenyen to stop him from tipping it in. Refs not seeing it apparently and letting him shoot free throws is the definition of luck imo.
@@bballbreakdown AD got a block, Derrick White got a block then team USA got the defensive board. That's not a stop?

Who cares how close it was, they lost and nuggets ended up winning the chip
I've seen some heavy criticism of Kerr's coaching (by Awful Coaching) for players not knowing where to be and not being proactive - do you think he's to blame?
I only saw AD and Jrue really try on defence. I am sure team USA would take things a bit more serious from now on.
its a tough job to manage all these big babies of NBA though. all needs playing time, all needs the ball and not many wants to do defense 😁
Our first unit has to change. The starting lineup should be Steph Jrue LeBron KD and Bam.
Embiid could benefit from playing with AD who has no issue being strictly a defensive anchor.
It wasn't really about their defense. The problem was their shots just weren't falling. Curry shot 3-9 and Edwards shot 1-7 from three, shooting only 4-11 from the field respectively. But that’s not going to happen every game. Plus, considering that South Sudan is in their group, does anyone really believe that Shayok can shoot 6-12 from three again? Damn ya'll need to calm down. LOL
This isn't aging well lmaoo

The world has a lot of talent. Very few sports are dominated by just one country and expected to win every time like the US and basketball (1 example)
If US wants gold they’re gonna have to do better.
Still remember the 2008 Olympics in Beijin with Kobe for the first time joining. That Spain game in the finals was crazy. Beautiful basketball
If they don’t improve significantly until the Olympics start, they are gonna be up for some surprises
I think Kerr should have been canned after last summer's debacle at the world championships. When Coach K was coach, we were a lot more focused and prepared. Even in the exhibition gshes we have won this year, we have gotten behind early.
Hey coach now will be a great time to celebrate Boston’s championship with a video
South Sudan should have won if the referees called the legit foul on the last layup they took.
So Sudan must come up w/ much much more in their Olympic game vs USA coz this just a friendly game. What adjustments they do (both teams) will show who's got more talents..
South Sudan came to play competitive basketball and USA slept walked until the end.
doubling embiid in the post is one of the oldest tricks in the modern book. It works like 80% of the time whether he's injured or healthy don't matter

Just fast forward. There's plenty of excellent analysis of the game in the video
This just shows me how much these superstars rely on role players to do the dirty work for them so they only have to score all game.
That's the problem when you throw a bunch of superstars into a team. Unless that superstar is Kobe who gave it his all on defense with team USA.
it seems clear Embiid doesnt know how to play against a true zone defense that international rules allow. He's too used to dominating 1v1 in the post in the NBA with limited options to trap him
You did it coach!

Team USA's chemistry was just a bit off but they gonna adjust quickly
Can you also breakdown those teams that 92 Dream team played vs the teams in today’s era. :))))
They all think they are above hustling. It’s embarrassing. They going to get steamrolled if they can’t hustle the entire game. We may have been better off sending some young and hungry up and coming players. They wil at least be hungry and want it more than the other team
it seems like no one is really priding themselves on the defensive side, even when they do, no one else makes an effort to help them, it just seems very lazy by everyone
It's also an exhibition competition before the Olympics...my feeling is alot of the competition players are holding off until going for gold.
That being said...I agree, the defense help was lacklustre
Curry and Lebron are honestly too old to be face guarding people on the perimeter, they'll give up a blow-by every time if they tried it. A lot of the other US players are too big and slow to do it too.
lol of course not these dudes barley play defense in the regular nba
@@NealX_GamingWhich honestly is unreasonable to rely on Bam or AD to cover for them the whole time they get blown out. At the end of the day, defense isn’t an individual performance act but the whole team’s.
The original Dream Team definitely had less competition but it doesnt change the fact they were way better on almost every position and physically, athletically there is no comparison. All this talk of modern players being so much physically better than older generation is biggest propaganda of all time. Lets compare. Ant vs Jordan; like seriously Jordan in 92 had his man body and was on serious weight training regimen for years at that point and he could jump as Edwards and was taller. Lebron is this physical specimen yes, he is the only one that wouldnt stand out but is of older age now and saves himself on defense. The rest? Are we seriously gonna even put White and Tatum with Pippen in same sentence? Embiid and Davis vs and Ewing and Robinson? Adebayo vs Barkley and Malone? The Dream Team was physically imposing and intimidating, they were crushing others because of that, not skill but pure athletic and strength advantage.
Keep in mind that we're comparing a team full of players who were laregly in their prime or close to that (original Dream Team) against a team of players who are either old (Steph, LeBron, KD), injury-prone (AD, Embiid), young (Ant, Haliburton), or are really good but not on that level (Tatum, Booker, White).
@@urbaindelva7869 Only Lebron is old. Steph is still in tail end of prime and so is Durant.
college sprinters have run faster times nowadays than the record times back in 1990s. Just search it up top 3 college runners break the 10 second mark which in rhe 90s would be record times. If u look at any objective athleticism measure you will find players nowadays are better than in the 90s. It just doesn’t feel like players now are as good because its harder to be dominant
@@5people-mw3td What does that have to do with anything? I am talking Nba Dream Team. Davis is not more athletic in any metric than Robinson. Any. Booker isnt more athletic than Jordan or Drexler. Kerr is having locker room issues with his biasness against AD and AE.
south sudan so far has been the only team who physically kept up conditioning wise with usa. others teams are great but got tired
The game was close because they didn't have KD. KD is a net positive to the team which no player can cover.

when they fail to achieve gold this time, they won't be able to use the 'team C' excuse anymore.
Nah this was perfect goes to show the world has caught up and they need to play fr
They still had the game in hand with 3 minutes left. I blame Kerr for not calling a timeout and running a good play out the timeout during that 8-0 run Sudan went on before Lebron layup. I think they just weren’t expecting much from Sudan. I think they roll in the actual tournament. I would like Davis Starting tho
That sneaky foul by drue on that last lay up won them the game😂
we gonna ignore the fact that sudan was making even bad heavily contested shots while the US was bricking wide open threes? they shot awfully, pretty much entirely unaffected by the defense. that's also a big part of why this game was close
JT Thor jumpshot base
TLDR USA just didn't bring the required intensity, and didn't defend.
Sounds like team USA are just a mirror for the NBA.
Let me break down your Olympic run: Nothing from nothing leaves nothing.
I think (from a 92 vs 24 point of view - which after this game shouldn’t be a debate but whatever) Admiral Ewing Barkley Malone - they get disrespected big time. We all hear it from these “analysts” “some on the dream team couldn’t even handle the ball or shoot” obviously they are referring to those guys - all 4 could shoot from the perimeter (but the 3 but from the outside) all 4 had varying levels of handles (Barkley & Admiral had terrific handles for their size and styles) and all 4 had zero issue finding open guys. All 4 knew when to help when and where to help in D. Perimeter weren’t cutting, catching a pass and scoring at the rim against the Dream Team. Embiid gets exposed all the time. Talented guy - but this team USA would trade him for any of those 4 guys without hesitation. He has zero awareness.
Everyone has played pickup games against teams of smaller, scrubby types. I am one of those smaller, scrubby players.
I can will a team of scrubs to a win simply by outhustling, outfighting, outwanting from minute one to minute done, fouling and pounding and beating up on these better players, forcing them to cry and bitch and inspiring my team to play as if their lives depend on it.
Great players almost always relax against teams they are supposed to beat. I have lost many, if not most of the games I've played with the odds so stacked, just like this, but I have won a small number of truly memorable games by imposing my will on teams and players that were vastly more skilled.
Love it
Please do a video about referees decisions on USA VS Serbia match, i wonder what is your opinion
00:03 - I didn't notice before, but the South Sudan player clearly *pushed* Davis under the basket, causing him to miss the dunk and nearly injure himself. Cheap play and a missed call by the refs!
Paul Pierce wanted to give skip 30 points against this team 😂. They were laughing at the idea this team could win. Wonder what he says tomorrow?
I think this solidifies that this team it's not in the same class with a 92 Dream Team
First off, I love all the players on the roster and think they deserve to be on there. However, I feel like a lot of their skills at their positions overlap too much. Let's determine the ones who are needed the most first: Lebron (leadership), Steph (handling, scoring, leadership), KD (best USAB player ever, scoring, leadership), AD (best versatile big), Embiid (biggest big), Adebayo (best versatile defensive big). After that we need some more guards specifically for defense and/or shooting so we have Jrue Holiday and Derrick White who both can guard 1-3 easily. Then we have backup playmaker in Haliburton.
The problem is we have too many backup scorers in Booker, Tatum, and Edwards. Tatum I get why because he's the tallest and can play 2-4 but we don't need both Booker and Edwards. I'd take Edwards over Booker for this team as well as he's a better defender and willing to score in the paint more so that just leaves Booker, though if it were up to me I'd replace both of them but the NBA wants Edwards to be a face of the league so wcyd?
I'd replace both with the best 3&D player we could find that doesn't want to dribble or hold the ball for more than 2 seconds and another big if AD/Embiid gets injured/foul trouble. for the 3D id go and beg OG Anunoby to renounce british citizenship (LMAO) or Jaden McDaniels. If you want a big that is a better perimeter shot I'd go Myles Turner (yes, over JJJ because JJJ is a worse 5 than Myles, he's best at the 4) or a big that will hustle, box out, catch lobs then Jarret Allen would be my choice.
Honestly we wouldn't have any discussion on this AT ALL if Kawhi and Paul George didn't have injury concerns, Klay didn't fall off a cliff in all aspects of his game this past year, or if Nike didn't have a stuck up their ass against Jaylen Brown as the lineup would have been too talented and feel like 2012 again where it didn't matter who we played or who is what position.
They don't seem to understand on defense, the goaltending rule.
Anthony Davis's missed lob dunk almost haunted Team USA.
LeBronze and AD are not used to a Clean Called Game at it Shows. The Lakers Depend on their Ref Flowers like they get from Adam Silver. Same as David Atern did for Kobe and Shaq when he Rigged 2 Titles for the Lakers in 2000 and 2002.
See, equipment is only secondary. What matters is economy. Americans are good at sports because other countries can't afford playing sports.
When African nations finally wake up USA is done. Nigeria has 230M people.
If Nigerians had same financial incentive and opportunity to become basketball professionals... Oh boy oh boy. I mean most Nba players ancestry is in Nigeria I believe.
Yep, they will play for the NBA, USA's gain.
😂😂😂😂
@@outlander234Giannis is part Nigerian.
@@outlander234 No they’re not come on
This is my starting five for the USA to be effective.
Steph
Jrue
Lebron
KD
AD
I put AD over Embiid just because AD has just been so good defensively. He can switch matchups, unlike Embiid. He's quick, agile, and a rim protector. Embiid has been a target for being slow and hinders the defense for he would do the drop coverage on a pick and roll, where other teams could exploit in pull up 3s. I also put Holiday on the starting for his perimeter defense. On the 3rd qtr against South Sudan, his defense was the game changer that led USA to take the lead at the end of the qtr. It just balances out, offense and defense. Since their main problem right now is their defense on their starting five. Lack of box out, lack of ball pressure and quick rotations.
Second unit would be
Ant
Booker
Tatum
Bam
Embiid
Again, Ant and Bam as their Jrue and AD. And the Tatum and Embiid can also provide some defense. But all of them can do the offense also.
Tyrese and White will provide backup. Tyrese on offense, White on defense.
So you got 2 holes on defense in your starting 5? I would replace Lebron and KD with Tatum and Embiid/Bam
KD aint healthy. But if you insist to play him, then you need some guys around him who are impactful off the ball. And that aint Lebron.
Steph
Jrue
Tatum
AD
Bam
Thats a team, not just some names thrown together.
you can start Embiid as long as you have Jrue or White in that starting lineup defensively. AD is a better defender than Embiid but even he will struggle without Bam next to him if you only have cones like Curry and Booker in front of him
