- In this video we get down to building a surface drive outboard using an old seagull outboard and a Stihl 088 chainsaw. My home town was hit with flashfloods and heavy rain so what a perfect time to take it for a test run!

This gent is only at 13k subs, like how is this even possible? Glad that I found this gem of a channel. Really enjoy the content, man!
Thanks 👍 glad you like it
Your ideas at the end are great (the expansion chamber for more power and exhaust tip below surface, the flywheel to make it not stall as much, and of course a longer stick for more balance and more control) impatient to see this Lil boat on flat water going for a rip
Thanks mate! Thank you for the input I will get those things sorted!
100th of a Meter...Gold!
"10mm plate or if you imperial that's one hundredth of a metre" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 cracked me up bro 🤣🤣 ❤️love your vids I just stumbled on your channel and am stoked I did ❤️🤜🤛nice build bro🤜🤛 she looks like a ripper💪😎
haha thanks , it goes pretty quick in the next video
You’re having the stalling issue because the chainsaw doesn’t make much torque, when the prop bites it doesn’t have the torque to spin it. I run a belt drive v twin on my surface drive in my big boat and when the props torque up you’ll feel the motor drop rpm and you’ll feel the boat Jump forward pretty hard. Good to see you got it working toward the end, you build some really neat stuff!
thankyou. I had the chainsaw motor apart today and it barely has a flywheel so I'm thinking thats why it stalls easily , I use a 13hp longtail on another boat and it doesn't stall but they have a big flywheel and are low reving, I would like a v twin surface drive they look fun and sound awesome ! Im doing some mods to the chainsaw surface drives so hopefully get another test on the weekend
😂typical kiwi! Mad as a cut snake! Love it mate, absolutely sweet!
NZ must be a great place.
It is a pretty cool place👍
That was a great build man I never knew you could do it with the chainsaw engine real nice I think it was pretty good
It did work pretty well , I am having another go at the moment
Love your enthusiasm mate!
Keep those videos rolling brother!
Good one brother. I just realized your in NZ my cousin and her family live in Timaru. Her husband is Dean Broadhead he’s a sparky! I enjoy watching your tinkering so much. I have a shipping container I turned into a work shop I am retired after 40 years as master Electrician! Keep up the great videos!
cool , I need some master electrician skills!👍
@@DktheWelder How close are u to Timaru?
@@ncwarrior62 Timaru is in the South Island I am in waihi in the north island. Well over 1000 km away
There must be videos about tuning chainsaws. I used to watch Buckin' Billy Ray Smith who is a tree feller on Vancouver Island, and he uses several tuned McCulloch chainsaws, but does not do the tuning himself. I guess chainsaws only do their thing while running flat out, so are not designed to have any sort of a broad powerband. In fact they would pretty much definitely stall if the bar hits the tree at anything less than flat out, and I have no idea what you could do to change that. It's a very long time since I raced two strokes. In fact we used to call it Scrambling then, and not Motocross, but from what I remember, lower crankcase compression and a longer inlet manifold were supposed to produce a broader powerband. If you had a spare piston you could maybe try shortening the skirt to lower crankcase compression, but I can't thinking that it could all go horribly wrong and it would hardly run. That was the fastest we've seen the boat run though, so you seem to be going in the right direction.
It has a heap of power at full throttle but anything less it would stall when hitting logs or grass or whatever was under the water. I think a fly wheel would help and a could make an expansion chamber that kicks in at lower rpm
A flywheel is too much for that little crankshaft if running wide open and something stopped the. Motor the flywheel would ring off the end of your crankshaft brother the exhaust has the most to do with your power band it's very highly tuned
Yeeea keen to see it on some flat water
I think it will be pretty fast we were just getting it sorted at the end 👍
I think maybe because you've removed the clutch she kept stalling, love ya videos mate awesome
Yeah I thought that! I got it for free and just came how it is , maybe I can find a clutch for it
@@DktheWelder just looked on ebay n whole clutch assembly around 170. Loads of videos on moding them aswell, advance timing, port n polishing all sorts of good shit, plus the 066 n 088 sound mint 🤙 nice one mate
Nice build mate
Thanks!
This guy, "I'll test my boat in my boat!"
hey I'm a fan can you make a paddle jet board using that mini chain saw engine it would freakin' awesome!! 😁
I was actually thinking the same thing! I have an old windsurfer that it the right size and I think that little jet unit be good for it . I have a pocket bike engine but maybe not powerful enough, maybe I could use 2 together!
cool!! I'll wait for that video 😁🤙
Congrats on the 10k
Thanks! Just like you said exponential growth!
Sick! I would of popped down for a look! 😂😂
I stopped by your house you weren’t there! You missed out could have gone for a swim as well
Sometimes the old methods of propulsion are the best ones
Simple is best ! A longtail motor works super well just cumbersome and difficult to use 👍
I was looking for somebody to do this in youtube. I was planning to do seascooter with lightweight 2 stroke engine. This stihl 088 look great with high rpm high hp Light weight.
Going to burn the saw up with the cover off! Needs it to channel the air over cylinder
yes someone else said that I need to find a cover for it , I got given the saw how it is alot of parts missing but a super powerful chainsaw
Where do you get those props in nz bro?
Are they from overseas?
think you should go to a 2cyl or a healthy single cyl would be ok to ,.. 2 stroke with a CVT drive set up...if you used your cv axle idea i think you could make it work with your surface drive you want.. you wouldn't have to worry about power and with a CVT your impeller or prop speed would not be a issue ... just an idea.. either way love the channel!!
What are the uni joints you used for the adaption to the jet unit ? What are they called and where did you get them ? Cheers
They are off an old quad bike
That thing was cruising with the last prop. Try not to get yourself washed away and drowned. Glad to see you were wearing a life vest
It was ready to take off and go fast once it starts spraying water up it speeds up but with that river so swift I’m glad I stopped!
How did you make your boat
There are some videos on my channel of building it , I folded each section up out of 2mm plate and welded them together
What size turbine did you use last?
9 inch prop
Probably need a clutch to prevent stalling
When did you build that tinny
About a year ago I think, there are some videos of me building it
the only thing you need is a bigger chainsaw engine and the aggressive prop you had on the first time and you'll get a lot of speed with a bigger chainsaw engine cause the engine u have isn't powerful enough for the aggressive prop you'll get like 20-30mph difference with a bigger chainsaw motor and the big aggressive prop an expansion chamber will also add more power and create a powerband effect cant wait to see updates
It is the biggest chainsaw engine you can get . I have another video of it going fast, now I am trying a long tail setup and building an expansion chamber
That's a 122 CC motor that will pull 72" of bar. It packs about 12hp, 2 stroke.
100th of a metre hahahaha you funny bugga
Hey, where can you get those My Little Pony DTIs? I can't find them on Bangood. Are HBs more, or less, accurate than 2H?
A 2h will work if it is sharp enough haha
I guess it would be a fun project. But just buy a small outboard. or use a small electric that can run all day.
Should have stuck with the original clutch on the saw
its not deep enough for the prop. cant get enough water at high revs with slow speed, you need to ease into it like you said, or extend it more.
It's good idea . BUT I WORK WITH CHAINSAWS,THEY SOUND HELLASISH !!!!!! NOT ON MY DAY OFF
Configure to jet setup please 😭
Sorry mate haha , the jet unit is going to get a redesign once I figure out what to do
Yup! It's deep AHAHA AHAHA
Mod the chainsaw motor port and polish the cylinder
I think an expansion chamber first , I got it going a lot better the video be out soon
@@DktheWelder yea i agree a expansion chamber would be a good idea.
variable pitch prop
i got it figured out in the last video
You know this is headed to a long tail Ti racing boat.
I have a longtail kit for it!
10 mill is 3/8s American
Ok 👍. While we are on measurements on the stihl 088 what does the 88 mean?
066 needed
Lovn the videos
Once you get a decent mini jet boat you should bring it down here to the South Island and join me up one of the amazing rivers we got I’ve got a tiny tuff jet
10mm = 3/8 inch in America. I know its not an exact match but its how we remember it
That motor is not design to run continuously! You will burn that motor up in no time .
that's not a noife
Great vid man pls upload soon love the series 👍
Thanks!
