So young - such a gentle sweet sad song. His voice sounds so pure. I have followed this man's career forever and his talent is superb. Kinda cool looking at this video clip now after so many years. Still love ya Rick! Thanks Sonny & Cher for showcasing him that night.
OMG, I am without words. Such a powerful song. So young, too young to have such concerns about what children would think. Genius. Rick, is truly the most non superficial , most HUMAN of human beings I've ever come across. Bravo.
My husband was born in October 72🎉 Rick Springfield is my most favorite 😍he is coming to the Ozark empire fair tonight and I can't make it 🎶thanks for sharing this,i really enjoyed it ✌️💖🤩
@cassiepittman1489 You won't hear his 70s stuff in concert and don't bet your life on it except at cruises or fan conventions where he only plays unplugged versions of those songs on piano and acoustic guitar.
I saw Rick three days ago,and he plays old and new stuff. He also played some blues riffs, and a cover song from the fifties called Can't Buy Me Love .So anyone that doesn't think our sixty two year old Rick can't rock still, needs to pick their ears clean, because he does rock and will probably die with a guitar hanging from those broad shoulders of his.He and his band played one of the best concerts I've ever been to.He does not disappoint his fans in any way.So go see him again and again.I will.
@DeanneMaven You won't hear his 70s stuff in concert and don't bet your life on it except at cruises or fan conventions where he only plays unplugged versions of those songs on piano and acoustic guitar.
I was 4! I didn't know Rick Springfield was active in the early '70s, until I heard one of his songs on Kasey Kasem's 1972 countdown! I saw him at the San Mateo County Fair a few years back, and he put on an awesome show!
He really should've been a star from day one. I wish i learned of him before Jessie's Girl, and happy that after I discovered him, I bought everything I could find, well I was a kid, my mother bought it for me on Christmas, lol. I love all of his music,
The lead singer of Zoot, Darryl Cotton, just passed away from cancer a few days ago. (RIP Darryl). I was blessed enough to see Zoot (including Rick), perform on the last Rick Springfield cruise. Darryl was very nice and Zoot performed really well. I'm really glad to see Zoot perform one last time. RIP Darryl, and we love you Rick!
I heard "Speak to the Sky" early one morning in the fall of 1972 and never got it out of my head. At the time he was considered a triple-threat comer by promoters. He sang, play multiple instruments, wrote his own stuff, and looked kind of like David Cassidy. He seemed to have all the makings of a big star, but I never heard from his again until "Jesse's Girl."
At 12 years old, you had exceptional taste in music. I purchased "Speak To The Sky" in 1972 when I was 11, but unfortunately my local radio stations wouldn't play "Children" so I didn't know about it until years later. Otherwise, I would have purchased it also.
Rick is the No 1 Rock Star prolific singer and song writer. Im an Australian fan from the beginnibg. I was 6 yrs old listening to this song shedding tears because l understood what he was singing about. I would cry and look for him on TV and 4 years later l finally saw him on Bandstand singing Take a Hand. God bless Dick Clark for always showcasing and helping Rick. He has only been awarded l Grammy for Jessie's Girl but all his fans really know the extent of his talent. Even Sonny and Cher couldn't deny it. Why have the music big wigs denied him of deserving acalades. We could laugh at the bono award but also cry for the most deserving recognition Rick should have gotten over all these decades over 60 years of sheer hard work and talent. Thank you so much for posting you are amazing. I have watched this hundreds of times❤❤😢😊
I saw Rick last week, and yes, he rocks! True he does Beatles stuff, (he's a real Beatles fan), but I think Jeffery was referring to his early 70s songs like Speak to the Sky, Believe in Me, and Life Is A Celebration. I've been lucky enough to see Rick perform some of his 70s stuff...but it would be nice if more of his fans from the 70s could.
I couldn't convince two of my sister's back in 1981 that Rick had been around for quite awhile longer than his "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" album and his Dr. Noah Drake General Hospital days. I remembered him from this time and his Mission Magic cartoon days in the early 1970's, but no one believed me! Well...NOW we have the internet! Thank you for putting this on RUclips.
I've had the same problem. Thank goodness I have Mission Magic on VHS and DVD and his albums released prior to Jessie's Girl. I'm glad you enjoyed this.
And when he dated Liza Minnelli for awhile back then. When he still was sporting the Australian accent and had a semi-hit with " Speak To The Sky" in the Summer of 1972.
@@tracymallon8485 ? ....Uh, yeah, he DID!! I was in my mid teens and remember it quite clearly, back in 1972!!! He was the cover boy on the old Teen Magazine, as well as the staples such as 16 Magazine and Tiger Beat. And, tes, he " dated" Linda Blair...she was 16, he 25...creepy and led to her quiet downfall into drugs and promiscuity back then.
This was on TV a year before Mission Magic came out. But I'm willing to bet the animators saw this special, and incorporated this outfit in the cartoon.
Just saw him again in Vegas on Aug 3 2013, awesome as usual and does Beatles covers with All My Loving as the encore.... Never a disappointing show, planning a concert in MN where I live in November...I honestly think he is better in concert now than in the 80s!
Utterly adorbs. That bit at the end with Sonny was cute & hilarious. SONNY: "what's the worst joke?" RICK: "I think I'm holding it." *buuurrrnn* Young Rick is so pretty, bashful & cute and that accent is so sweet. I was never a Springfield fan, but this Early-70's version is an exception. *GAH* What a beautiful boy! I've check out photos from that period...what a babe! I want to glomp his long, thick feathery hair. So pretty. What a charmer.
Sadly, Rick doesn't do his classic 70s songs unless he's playing a special request concert, as he does in Milwaukee, or in the piano bar on his past cruises. I was lucky enough to sing The Ballad of Annie Goodbody from Beginnings w/ him at the piano on the cruise in 2010. Check my channel (in both favorites and my videos) for that magic moment!
I was four! I vividly remember watching this very performance. Needless to say a crush was born. Soon after a cartoon followed. Not to mention. Episodes of Wonder Woman, Nancy Drew, & the pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica. When he became famous for GH, & his 80s albums. People acted like he came out of nowhere. By then. Though I still thought he was cute. I preferred the long shag version. Circa 1970-73 Especially after discovering Zoot.
I bought the LP twice. Played them to death. Found it on CD...it was stolen. That photo inside that gate-fold LP jacket...mama, I wanted that man so bad.
Me too! The second time was when I saw him on an ABC Saturday Morning Preview when he was promoting his cartoon show "Mission: Magic", wearing that same outfit. I can remember screaming "That's the guy from the Sonny and Cher show!" when I saw it.
........A man chosen as Australia's top songwriter making his American network debut.............. Wow long time ago, before Jesse's girl & General Hospital-Noah Drake. He was so cute.
I don't think he was ever Australia's top songwriter. In that era Brian Cadd, Johnny Young, Russell Morris, Ross Wilson, Stevie Wright/George Young/Harry Vanda were more proficient.
No one has mentioned a classic Beatles song done by a band called The Zoot. Perhaps very few are aware that he was the guitarist in this band which was all the rage in Aus. Many will claim it was far better than the original. Since no one has referred to this song, nor will I. Check out The Zoot and be pleasantly surprised!
Thanks Shyman... My mum hated this song. She also hated 'Too young to be married' by the Hollies. I found out years later that it must have struck a personal chord with her. Did you have the Comic Book Heroes Album?
a very special is.messagecwe all had to deal.with if we had to speak one another and learn how to cooperate the social ills are killing us. the family had to stand up and face to our children and tell the truth instead of making hell through worse.
Uh, no. This song is from BEGINNINGS. Rick used that logo before Comic Book Heroes came out. In fact he designed that shirt. "Jessica" is from the 1976 album "Wait For Night".
I think, no...I KNOW...this song is from "Comic Book Heroes" check out the logo on his shirt..."Beginnings" album contained "Jessica". I've been a Rick fan since I could crawl!
Nope, it was actually on 'Beginnings.' I've got two copies of the LP, the original signed for me by Rick. However, the vest he's wearing features the later 'Comic Book Heroes' artwork.
Kelli Erin ...Several years before Linda Blair, and just about the time he gained fame through his hit, "Speak to the Sky", he was reportedly linked to Liza Minnelli, who was several years older than him. This was in 1971, early '72. He was so cute back then with the hair and accent.
If you read his book Late Late at Night, you'll see that Rick spent some time in England in his teens. His accent then sounds like a hybrid of British and Australian.
LOL... This is great ! I always tell ppl " I'm so old I remember when Rick Springfield was Australian "
@distortion20 This song is better than Jessie's Girl. Aussie Rick, not American Rick.
