Most definitely in agreement. I know they get alot of flak for their constant small batch blends but the majority of my favorite blends are C&D/Pease blends.
Also, a rising tide raises all ships. Their presence is a benefit to the pipe tobacco industry imo.

C&D has a huge range of tobacco blends and great creativity..always bringing a new one out. They had once a hiccup about mould but solved it and otherwise have very constant high quality, great vacuum tins and some terrific tin art too. You are right..we must be grateful that they are still going with all the regulators making it a challenging business to be in. You‘ve inspired me to pop a tin of C&D tonight 😊 …which one…I‘ve got so many 😄😉

I for one am very happy for the existence of Cornell & Diehl. They make a ton of different blends and I feel the majority of them are very good. They are always thinking outside the box to come up with some different and unique blends as well. Aside from the Small Batch series their tobaccos are readily available too, which is more than can be said for a lot of tobacco these days; what does it matter if a blender makes the greatest blend ever if no one can get it? I personally think that C&D is what McClelland wanted to be but never quite accomplished it even though they could. If it wasn't for C&D, Mac Baren, and STG the pipe tobacco world we all know and love would no longer exist at all. I think you nailed it when you said we often don't know what we have until it's gone, but I am definitely not taking any tobacco blender for granted these days and I will praise any and all who want to provide us with more options to enjoy in this ever shrinking world.

C&D needs to put out a yearly catalog. Speaking of McClelland I miss blackwoods flake and the ketchup smell. I talked to Jeremy today via email, i was thinking about asking him about doing a billy Budd blonde cake and a 3 friers cake. I am impressed to get an email from the master blender from such a large company.

You are right, they are OUR company. I do enjoy A LOT of their blends and they are readily available, and until about 8 months ago, at a reasonable price. I'm in your boat, I could honestly survive on Autumn Evening with ease from October to April, and in the summer something a bit smoother. Also in agreeance, the burley flakes are top-notch, as I come back again and again.

After much soul searching, I hate to admit that I have to agree. As much as I love so many of McClelland's tobaccos- especially the Virginias- I don't think I could do without Manhattan Afternoon, After Hours, Pegasus, Briar Fox, Derringer, Innsmouth, Interlude, Sunday Picnic and Yorktown just to name a few. Not to mention all the great G.L Pease blends. Jeremy has a bright future ahead of him, and I can't wait to see, nor taste, what wonderful experiences are in our future with this company. Have a great day, and thanks for all you do for this community my friend. Cheers!

Sometimes someone has to say something in order for the reality of the situation to sink in and you’ve done it. I have been often times critical of C&D, but like you said if they were to go out of business oh what a tragedy that would be, especially here in the good ole USA. They do have a lot of great tobaccos and they have a huge selection and like you said they have some issues, but anyone who has ever tried and do anything knows that issues comes with the territory of work. You’ve given me a reason to pause and to be more appreciative of what we have with C&D Thank you!

So I'm a very new pipe smoker. My two favorite blends I've tried so far are Mac baren 7 seas gold and star of the east. I like the bayou morning but I don't have the nicotine tolerance to enjoy more than a small clay cutty. The biggest reason I want Cornell and diehll to stay in business is because they are extremely good at marketing on social media and RUclips and they're really good at explaining things to someone who doesn't know squat. I think the biggest thing the pipe community needs is more exposure to younger generations.

    • @beans316

@@beans316 and I definitely appreciate it. I think there's a lot of folks in their 20s like me who are more interested in traditional things. I think some of it is how crappy the last 5 years have been and trying to get back to what we see as traditional values of the earlier 1900s. At least for me smoking a pipe is symbolic of that and especially with the way there's more research coming out showing the difference between pipe smoking and cigarettes. To me it's notable that I've met guys in their thirties with smoker growl and cough who smoke cigarettes and the guy who owns my local-ish tobacco shop is in his 80s smokes 6-8 bowls a day and has neither.

Gotta have one of those Fishers, as far as CanD and GLPgoes I think like most blenders there are going to be some I go to regularly (Union Square in the warmer months and Stonehenge in the Fall and Winter) and some just don't work for me (Regent's Flake which I thought I would like to me was extremely bland and at 74 years old I will not be laying in much for aging) I remember when McClelland first came on the market, I was working at our Tinderbox in Portland, Oregon (aka The People's Republic these days, sad) and the McClelland people came through town to introduce this high quality pipe tobaccos to the stores in town (in those days all cities had numerous tobacco shops, in Portland at one time there were at least 8 that I remember) about 1980 and they had both tins and bulk available, very high quality Virginias with that distinctive tangy note that they were famous for. They revolutionized the industry overnight, Before McClelland there were virtually no high quality tobacco blenders selling nationwide in the US. They made American blending respectable so in some ways, CandD and GLP owe a lot to Mike McNiel because he opened the door for boutique blenders like CandD to enter the market on a national scale. Before McClelland there were great blenders in the U.S. but they were all very insular, Perettiis in Boston and Boswells have made great blends for decades but were not generally available nationwide McNiel changed all that, we all owe him a great debt of gratitude.

I hold C&D and G.L.Pease in high regard. A big reason is - to me - their tobaccos are primarily very good, basic tobacco - without being overly processed or cased, or hit with humectants. In a way, I wish I liked burley more than I do, because of C&D's reputation for good burleys. But being a virginia tobacco smoker, I still find lots of C&D/Pease to be my favorites. I have more blends from them in my cellar - both in terms of variety of blends and in terms of overall quantity/weight - than any other blender's. Affordability and availability are bonuses as well. Hope they're around for a good, long time.

Election Day video! I agree, C&D is my number one tobacco company right behind is Mac Baren. C&D uses new tobacco for the most part so aging is almost a must and there way of hand making thier sauces and hand Blending them in makes every batch homemade. Not to mention no chemicals. Other companies like Sutliff uses spray on chemicals in a tumbler and after 5 minutes of smoking that your mouth is coated.

    • @jameslong4929
      @jameslong4929 2 года назад +1

Yes. C&D blends you can just smoke. If you don't smoke a lot of other blenders for awhile and then go back to em you definitely notice it is irritating to your membranes and then you adjust to it. Not so with C&D. It continues to stay the same and be a quality smoke for a reasonable price at a almost constant availability. I buy Mac Baren and C&D almost exclusively for the above reasons. Even though G&H uses some high quality leaf it's got to much on it and I find it irritating if not smoking it all the time.

Brian, like you I was never a big fan of McClelland. I can remember their very early days, when Carl Ehwa was in charge. Their Oriental blends were really lacking character, and their Virginias all tasted the same to me, except for #25, the red and black blend burned hell out of my mouth, but I liked it. Three Oaks Syrian was the best thing they ever did. They did get better as time went on. Mike and Mary were great people. Miss them. As for Cornell & Diehl...eh, what can you say? They have something for everyone. And they have blends no one else would attempt. They certainly made Perique a household word! GL Pease is a class act. Greg and I used to correspond regularly. I just recently started smoking pipes again after a ten or so year hiatus, and I find the new landscape funny. When I stopped, Esoterica was held in high esteem, but you could get as much as you wanted of whatever they made. McClelland was loved by some and hated by others for the ketchup thing. Frog Morton was routinely criticized for its gloopiness as McClelland went heavy with the PG.
I profoundly miss McClelland as their 5100 was my primary smoke, but I don't think people generally thought of even their virginias as being clearly superior to Orlik and whathaveyou.
Pipe smoking has always been kind of fetishistic, but that seems to have amped up a lot while I was gone. If we lost C&D, or STG, or Macbaren, there'd be a whole new mythos about how awesome they were. And they'd kind of be right as every big blender makes some amazing stuff.

C&D is my favorite blending house! I'd be a little lost if they went away. Many of my favorite blends (if not all) come from C&D. I think their casing or lack thereof makes it easier for me to smoke. I know people get annoyed with the small batch releases but to me it's marketing and how can I fault them for doing something that works. My favorites are Haunted Bookshop, Pegasus, Briar Fox, Habana Daydream, Chelsea Morning, Barbary Coast, and Old Joe Krantz - probably more too I can't think of. They are the last American owned pipe tobacco company and that alone, I believe, deserves our support.

Personally, I would be wrecked if C&D were to go the way of the dodo. There are too many of their blends that I adore, and keep stocked in the cellar. C&D blends outnumber everything else in my personal rotation with the exception of my blending tobaccos from various sources. Their Wintertime Reserve blends every year only being available if you buy a Peterson pipe is a little irritating. However, most of those Wintertime Reserve blends a pretty bad in my opinion. The "Small Batch" releases bum me out a little. Mostly because they are typically sold out by the time I get to them, unless I luck out from time to time Like I did with the Eight State Burley. Needless to say: Haunted Bookshop, Star of the East Flake, Exclusive, Mississippi Mud, Kajun Kake, Old Joe Krantz, The Burley Flakes etc, are all in the cellar. Among many more.
As far as the G.L. Pease blends go, I love a lot of them: Penny Farthing, Sixpence, Quiet Nights, Maltese Falcon, Triple Play, Chelsea Morning, etc. All fantastic.
Warped, Two Friends, Captain Earle's. Without C&D we wouldn't have those great brands either. I would be S.O.L. without C&D. Sure I like a lot of Mac Baren and Sutliff stuff. Lane Limited stuff too, and they are staples in my cellar. Amphora, is one of my favorite lines from Mac Baren. However, I still have a lot of C&D, and I love the C&D stuff for the most part.
I to would much rather see C&D stay around, and have their blends available than to do Easter Egg hunting for Germain's/Esoterica, or Gawith & Hoggarth Blends. I don't even bother with McClelland's or Old Dunhill blends much anymore because they are getting ridiculously over priced on the hoarder market. I've tried my Fill of them, and honestly, there are currently available blends from other manufacturers that are just as good, if not better in my opinion. It's not worth the time, effort, and expense to chase unicorns all the time. If that's what people like to do; then more power to them. Everyone needs a hobby.

Ive always smoked good tasting pipe tobacco whoever made them. I never cared about who the maker was.. As far as Haunted Bookshop I think Matches made that blend popular to many. I find it boring. Some of the old codger blends is still the tops for me. My dad taught me many years ago that you don't have to pay a fortune for pipe tobacco or pipes to really enjoy pipe smoking. A thought is DR. Grabow's have been around for years and make a fine working or leisure pipe as does Petersons but look at the difference in price. A good pipe is a good pipe regardless who made it. Ive had a couple bad smokers from both of them over the years .
