I've talked about the Dark Souls Bosses every which way possible - I've ranked the Souls Boss Difficulty across each game, Top 10 Hardest SoulS Bosses, Best Souls Bosses, Worst Souls Bosses, even the Easiest Souls Bosses, and done a quality ranking across the entire series (excluding Sekiro). While I've mostly said everything I've wanted to on the majority of the Souls bosses through these videos, there's a few unsung heroes I feel haven't gotten their due.
Today I'll be sharing with you my take on 10 bosses across the Souls Series that are vastly underrated. Hopefully I have some surprise choices you wouldn't have considered. I'm sure you do as well, so be sure to share them in the comments. 3 days to Elden Ring - 1 more Souls video incoming before then. The hype is real!!

Pinning this since I know some are curious. There's a chance, but I worry about re-treading similar content over making entirely new things. If I were to re-rank things, I would inevitably end up talking about some of the same bosses over again. I'd rather focus on making as much content as I can for Elden Ring specifically and other non-Souls games to remain diverse. Never say never though. It would be fun to get Sekiro and Elden Ring their due in series-wide rankings.

@Hyper10sion I've wanted to start doing "in FromSoft Games" over "the Souls Series" for a while now, especially with Bloodborne, Sekiro, and now Elden Ring almost matching the number of Souls titles. My concern has been that "FromSoft Games" is less searchable than "the Souls Series" which matters for RUclips discovery/recommendations

    • @theDeModcracy
      @theDeModcracy  2 года назад +18

@LOPES HICK lol that'd be wild. To be fair, one of the reasons I refreshed myself on all the games ahead of Elden Ring was in the event I wanted to re-rank anything. If anything, I'd be most tempted to do the entire series of re-do's of Top 10 Hardest or the like. That giant 200+ list would be a HUGE undertaking though. Makes re-doing the Top 10's seem less intimidating. I could only really re-do them if Elden Ring + Sekiro made a significant shake-up in them.

I honestly would argue that Dragonslayer Armor, Storm King, and Executioner’s Chariot are heavily underrated.
Dragonslayer Armor gets overshadowed by other late game bosses like Gundyr or Nameless King.
Executioner’s Chariot has one of the most interesting arenas in the series, and also has one of the coolest entries and theme in the series.
Storm King has a beautiful theme and arena, and is honestly my favorite boss in Demon Souls ever since the remake came along.

I would honestly say my #1 most underappreciated boss in the entire series is the Demon Prince.
EVERYONE forgets about them, because they have the misfortune to be in the same DLC as two of the best fights ever made, Darkeater Midir and Slave Knight Gael.
But I think it was the ONE TIME Fromsoft got the 2v1 formula absolutely perfect.
Everyone points to Ornstein and Smough as "the perfect dynamic", but it never plays out like that. Ornstein's eternally glitched charging attack ensures he always closes the gap way too fast, but when he's NOT using that, he's actually super slow and basically not even a threat at all. In turn, Smough is supposed to be "slow and threatening" but due to his constant charging hammer spam, he's actually the FASTER of the two and easier to focus down. It's also super exploitable as a fight since their outdated AI makes their phase 2 buttslams easily baited for free damage and Smough's hammer CANT HIT YOU if you're point blank in his belly. People only remember them being brutally hard because it was a gank. Any semi-veteran souls player could do the fight in their sleep because of how exploitable and non-dynamic they are. Plus, attacking both is worthless since ALL damage done to the survivor is simply erased upon Phase 2 starting.
In contrast, the Demon Princes ARE fast and slow. The very clearly enraged demon rushes you down non-stop, but uses low-damage attacks that aren't an immediate threat. In contrast, the burned out demon will never run after you, but instead fires well telegraphed but highly damaging Toxic attacks that are a MAJOR threat because of how brutal Toxic is and how rare items that heal it are. You can focus on the angry demon, but keep an eye out for the Toxic demon at the same time. Easy and intuitive management. The fight also mixes things up by having their transformations slightly overlap, changing the pace of the fight in interesting ways. Having two angry demons running after you puts you on the defensive, wheras having both demons burned out lets YOU go on the attack. Your choice of target also matters, and damage to both targets is meaningful, since they don't just heal. They then lead into a phenomenal second phase that starts after a fakeout death, where the demon you killed last actually MATTERS and significantly changes the strongest move of the Demon Prince.
In all ways OTHER than nostalgic, the Demon Prince is just the one time Fromsoft finally created the Ornstein and Smough 2.0 they've been trying to recreate for half a decade.
    Its SO underappreciated.

    • @kartikayysola
      @kartikayysola 2 года назад +52

I couldn't agree more. O and S work as a gank not because of their mechanics, but rather the arena (specifically the pillars), but the Demons have that same behavior literally baked into their mechanics, and the strongest move of the Prince changing depending on the order in which you killed the demons was a masterstroke. I would also make a similar argument for the second phase of Friede when she's paired with Ariandel as well.

@@kartikayysola I'd say Friede and Ariandel is a worse gank than Ludd and Zullen tbh. They have the same problems OnS do, but without the arena to make it up. Combine that with the fact Araiandel is just as fast as Friede, both have 0 defense, AND it's just a roadblock to the only phase of the fight that's good (Blackflame Friede), it's just such a weird decision, honestly they should have had you just fight Friede and then have made Araindel an actually competent boss in of himself, but noooooo we needed OnS clone number 7!

My favorite thing about Freja is that her presence actually matters in the world of Drangleic. A lot of bosses in these games are just sort of sitting around in their arena, but Freja has all but taken over Brightstone Cove. There's an army camp set up just to keep her from progressing any further, and it's easy to see why. She's nearly invulnerable to damage, her laser could easily wipe out armies if she wanted to, and she has an army of her own that keeps growing the longer she's left alone.

You know, despite my initial skepticism of seeing Genichiro on this list, I have to agree that his position in the early game as a learning tool really does make him worthy of consideration as a top boss in Sekiro. One thing I rarely see mentioned is how he reacts to healing; in Souls, the good ol' "run away and heal" works pretty well, and up to that point in the game it still works in Sekiro as few bosses or minibosses can really stop you from getting a heal off. But if you try that trick on Genichiro, he'll immediately prepare a heavy bow shot that you need to be ready to deflect or dodge almost as soon as the heal ends, lest you eat a heavy punish. The final phase mixes it up even more, as any attempt to heal will result in a thrust that's too quick to Mikiri before the healing ends if he's too close, and his tendency to chase you down if you run away ensures he will be close enough. It's such a nice twist that really makes you earn healing windows, and even rewards experienced players since with proper spacing you can create enough distance to both get off the heal and have enough time to be ready to Mikiri the thrust. It's just another piece of what makes Genichiro such a fantastic boss in a game where the boss quality is already astronomical.

I think the True Monk in Fountainhead Palace is also deeply underrated. In a way, she's a perfect re-test of your skills in Sekiro: She's got posture that will make Lady Butterfly look like a whimp of which you need to wittle down Vitality, but she also performs a lot of the familiar stuff that you need to get readjusted to: swings, swipes and thrusts.
Considering that Fountainhead Palace is filled with creatures that rely on you being on top of your game in deflecting, the True Monk is a great method of getting those skills back in good shape. Plus... the environment you fight in!

The boss's appearance, attack animations, varied spell attacks, lore, arena, and just everything about it was perfect for me. Even now, the four armed guardian of the Source is a boss I smile when I die to and am always happy to challenge to a spell battle. The music in the second phase, too... Honestly a lot of people hate him, and rightfully so, but Lawrence, The First Vicar is really underrated in my eyes. Yes it's very difficult, but you are given the option to find plenty of incredibly powerful weapons against him, like the Beast Cutter or the Whirligig Saw, which do massive damage to him. He has stagger potential, which kind of makes him more fair to the player. The music is stellar, the cutscene before the fight is really eerie and atmospheric. Having the fight take place in the grand cathedral is also really good, since that's also where we find him in the waking world. His screams, albeit annoying, resonate within the cathedral and make the fight a lot more intense. His unforgiving moveset also shows what the Cleric Beast scaled for end game would look like, and he doesn't just spam you constantly, sometimes allowing you to rally and regain health. This makes the fight a steep but rewarding learning experience, and I find he really represents the lore behind the Healing Church and what the blood and search for insight does to a man.

Her design is one of the best in all of Soulsborne, her lore is really good, and the fight is perfect. I feel like it's a great test of everything you've learned so far in the game from Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne. If those were the Pop Quizzes, then Amelia is the big test. She punishes you for playing passive and defensive and can be taken down with more aggressive play, but not just charging recklessly. She's my favorite boss in the whole series. The only flaw I have with her is how she doesn't have her own theme music, instead just sharing it with the Cleric Beast

    - Great Ape from Sekiro. It’s a really cool experiment to put a more Soulslike boss in this game with a brand new combat system. And even though they did this with Demon of Hatred too, Great Ape was the first.
    - Demon Princes from Dark Souls III. They’re often overshadowed by Gael and Midir, but I think the Demon Princes are the perfect gank boss. It’s like they took O&S and updated them to a better system with less glitches. And they don’t need the arena to break them up.

He is the best of both. Plus having an amazing storyline and connection to other NPC’s is great. He is also the most challenging first boss in all the games (cleric beast is optional, so doesn’t count) The boss fight just sets you up for the entire game, and rewards you for adapting to the new parry system and punishes you if your timing is off.

My pick for most underrated boss has to go to Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen. Most people probably never even fight her, being at the end of the Chalice Dungeon grind, but I think it’s a more than worthwhile fight.
She has three phases, melee combos, AOEs, gap-closers, teleportation, clones herself, boasts a wide variety of creative blood spells and has the crying baby to punish your greed and force you to rely on audio cues as well as visuals. It’s one of the most complex and varied bosses they’ve ever done, and more than makes the Chalices worthwhile in my eyes.

It was one of the most fun I’ve had with a boss, figuring out the little things you can do to counter her: jumping on her, using the shuriken on her in the air, and, the best of all, going all out when the second phase starts so she can’t even summon her ghosts. One of the greatest early bosses imo.

That list giving Allant context made my soul soar.

I played Demon's Souls after DS 1,2,3, Bloodborne & Sekiro. Found Allant to be super easy, barely an incovenience! Just kept my distance, punished him after his charge, than kept my distance again. Rinse & repeat.

I love the lists where we get to hear your opinions. The community rankings are great but these ones? Perfection.

I once defeated Yhorm without Storm Ruler, on a playthrough where I used only Caestus/Demon Fists and Pyromancy (Firebender playthrough).
Fighting the giant with a no-reach weapon was quite the challenge.

    Twinces: *[defeat DeMod several times]*
DeMod pulling out Moolight Greatsword: Forgive me, Master Ludwig... but I must go all out just this once.

I remember watching your boss rankings for every single souls game directly after I beat them to feel validated lol. I remember you said the demon princes weren’t very hard after I beat the ringed city dlc and died to them 50 times and got mad. then my second play though I killed them second time

DeMod! You're back! I missed having your Souls content to listen to while playing through the Souls games - I'm glad it's coming back for when I start playing Elden Ring. Always love all your stuff!

Before we start, let me make something clear. The Demon Prince, Sanctuary Guardian, and Martyr Logarius definitely should have a spot here, or should at least be mentioned. I know these three bosses are well-liked, but hardly anyone talks about them. For the Ringed City, it's either Gael or Midir. For Artorias of the Abyss, it's either Manus or Artorias. And for Bloodborne people just talk about Father Gascoigne, Gehrman, and the DLC fights. It's a shame because, in my opinion, all these fights are top tiers within their respective games.

100% agree 3 great picks. I thought dancer of the boreal valley was criminally underrated as well probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite bass game boss of ds3

Personally Sanctuary Guardian might be my most hated boss in the series. In a game about slow, deliberate back and forth with a heavy focus on positioning he never stops attacking and retreats as soon as you try and position around him. He really feels like fighting a Bloodborne boss but with DS1's slow jank mechanics.

Hard to believe Elden Ring was announced in 2019, I feel like time flew so fast to bring us all to this day.

Genichiro is my favorite boss in any Fromsoft game. He's not the hardest or the coolest, but he is the most fun. Just a beautiful showcase of everything Sekiro's combat has to offer. I once deleted another game from my Steam account to redownload Sekiro just so I could fight him again.

Number 1 is so easy for me. Manus of the abys, never makes any top 20 souls boss list, yet was absolutely amazing and for me personally at the time one of the hardest ever

I can't be the only one who liked fighting the Decons of the Deep in DS3. The game turns into Dynasty Warriors and is a stepping stone for the story of Horas and Enrie. It is easy, but so satisfying to go through!

Darklurker has to be my pick for most underrated, simply because he is an excellent boss with a cool mechanic and well-designed use of it, and a stand-out from the other style of boss in DS2. And yet most people never even see him because many players never even find the special areas to unlock him, and of those that do many find them obnoxious and don't get to the end. But as a piece of boss design, a great test. Big, powerful, wide-area attacks that are all clearly telegraphed and can be avoided - designed for you to learn the boss pretty quickly. And then, when you have the hang of it, the REAL boss fight begins with two of them. Suddenly, the generous windows and clear attacks make perfect sense; when you are managing two at once it is much harder to manage. They even give him a highly-visible profile and bright colour in the dark room so he's easy to track.
