As John said, we got "good value" out of the trade. But, I wanted to win it all with Marcus... its gonna feel 10% less rewarding if/when we do. Not sure how else to put it?
Like when Tony Allen was sent to the Grizz, it was hard to watch but good things happened shortly after. Not only that seeing him on a different team made it easier to see his offensive weaknesses but the tenacity was ALWAYS there! Anyway, I like the trade, it needed to happen and we got good returns and hopefully KP can stay healthy, unlike Kemba, Gordon, Gallo and the bad luck of decline to new players can stop. KP will be a huge improvement to this team. I’d love to see them offer any players not named Tatum,Brown,White, R. Williams plus any picks for Murray on the Hawks
Dam this is a hard one to process. He was the hustler scrappy leader of this team and I will really really miss him. I don't think it will be fully realised for some people what he bought and what the celtics are going to miss until the games start being played and they play against the grizzlies especially. Not sure about anyone else but this has IT getting traded for kyrie flashbacks for me.
Crushed. Feels like the Ainge trade in 1989. If Porzingis doesn't have the right attitude and commitment, the city of Boston is going to eat him alive.
I thought the same thing, if the Celtics won atleast ONE, just ONE, ring in the last 5 seasons then they could keep the team. I love how the Cs are sticking with their team and not trading everyone all the time(which is rare these days) but you’re right, every year we are a top 5 team but somehow lose in the playoffs so obviously something has to change and we were going to have to move some of our stars around. It was going to have to be Hordford, Smart, Brogdon, Tatum, or Brown, and it seems like the Celtics are trying to find a way to keep both Brown and Tatum. Everyone is saying we can’t afford to keep both bc of max deals, but why not??? The most historic team in the NBA with the most championships can’t afford to superstar players but yet tons of others teams can?? Some teams even have 3 superstars in the past and present and some have 4 super good players which is like the same thing money wise
I thought after some time I’d feel better about this trade but the truth is that we lost the best Celtic, not best player, best Celtic on this team. I understand Brad’s decision, yes we got great value back. John, you’re absolutely right. This was a gut punch to Celtics fans, regardless of whether you like or dislike Smart. He embodied a true teammate and asset to the organisation. He tirelessly put the team first and constant changed himself for what the team needed. He learned to become a happier and more positive version of himself and really grew into a better person. I hope this hits as hard or even harder to the Jays. They’re now fully responsible for this team, they have to carry that torch and I hope it lights a fucking huge fire in their hearts. The real shame is if we win and Marcus isn’t on that podium. I guess everything has a cost but this one stings so much. The entire time I’ve followed this team, this hurts the most. Forever beloved and trusted, Marcus Smart.
@@TheRobversion1right, I don’t even think a trade like that would get accepted on 2k with trade override on. The Celtics really fleeced for an overrated player.
@@lordoffaiyum9727why you say that he will now bring leadership to Memphis so now Derrick is starting all 82 out there down the stretch Payton can now think twice before he says he wants a trade
Going to sleep with Brogdon being dealt and waking up to Smart being dealt is one of the biggest gut punches I've felt in a long time as a Celtics fan. I haven't felt like this since Ray Allen signed with the Heat.
We traded Smart basically for two 1st rd picks and a 7'3" center that plays like Horford but is much younger, taller, more athletic. Defense will be better, team is taller and the offense will flow. Thanks Marcus, but this is a great trade. Kudos Steven's, now go get a legit quick bench instant offense guy. Like a Monk, Clarkson type. Love to see Andre Jackson and Sanogo from UConn get drafted by the Cs
I just woke to hearing the trade switched to Marcus being traded and I’m shocked and it doesn’t feel right I wanted him to get a ring with us too now if we do put up Banner 18 it will feel weird without him
We will miss you smart ... Thank you for everything !!! It's a good trade, 2 more moves and we are on our way to banner 18!!! Brad seems like the belichick in trades 😅
I went from a trade of Brogdon which I was ok with and had come to terms with, to losing my favorite Celtic player in a matter of hours 😭😭😭😭 Funny to see Marcus continue with the Tony Allen comparisons though.
This opens up for playing tome for prichard. He is a realky goid three point shooter and hustles. Low cost as well. I like marcus as well. We will miss his toughness
John, I am a huge Smart fan, but the Clippers fulfilled the profecy that “We are building around the J’s”. We had to trade Marcus and give up the last pillar that was not keeping Jaylen and Jason together no matter what. I hope we can bring at least a championship in the next 2 years, or everything would be in vain.
I believe trading Marcus Smart will allow Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to develope as leaders. 2 1st round picks and Kristaps Porzingis for Marcus Smart? This trade is a steal.
I was ecstatic when the trade was for Brogdon, but now I'm not happy and I'll leave it at that. Moving forward, my suspicion is that there will be an attempt to still move Brogdon to a 3rd team with Jones ending up in Boston.
We saw how effective the two man pick and roll game with Tatum and a big can be with Rob Williams, so I think Porzingis will be a great fit. He spaces the floor too. Injuries are a concern but I don’t think we could have done any better
Sad to see MS go, but the Celtics had to make a move to improve the team. KP does check some boxes that help them. KP can go his plus he would help against the zone if you use him on the middle.
One of my favorite Celtic .. plays hard true grinder .. guess I'm a Grizzlies fan now.. Wishing him well. But Porzingas if he stays healthy will make offense allot more potent. All that size is a major plus when you go against Lakers and Denver too. After the shock of losing Smart it's actually not a bad deal
@@TheRobversion1 I don't argue the numbers but I'm thinking more of this battle tested and dog fighting spirit that Marcus bring to the team . I guess still processing this loss. Porzingis to me is this fancy praying mantis and C's are paying a very high price for him. We'll see the fit... hopefully I'm wrong.
@@samirboudjennad4929 should be a good fit for mazzula ball. if we're looking a guy to get the C's butt in gear, especially defensively, the solution is to hire KG as an assitant coach/defensive coordinator.
You make excellent points, John;. there's definitely value in this deal. That being said, with Smart gone, the team loses a skilled floor general and the heart of the team and those things are not easily replaced. Smart will definitely be missed.
What about JD Davison coming up from Maine to play some PG minutes? He is definitely not the defender Marcus is, but he is fast, athletic and is always hitting the bigs in Maine with great passes.
Absolutely the right call. Smart was outplayed by both white and brogdon last year. If brogdon didn’t get hurt in the playoffs, smart was option 3. He wasn’t the same defensive player and his offense is way erratic.
Everyone saying we got better, I don’t think we did. We got softer. That is our main issue, we needed more dogs. Look who made it to the finals, DOGS, Jokić is the ultimate dog, nothing shakes him tough as hell. Not a good day for the celts.
We had smart for almost 10 years and almost work. We need someone like Porziņģis for it to work. I wish smart the best but dude I am so freaking excited to get Porziņģis. Have not been this excited since we got Garnet.
@John I am willing to see how this plays out with Porzingis and the 1st round pick to see 2 or 3 years from now who wins this trade..... That said I am devastated as Marcus was my favorite Celtic and unless we get a defensive guru as a assistant coach this could be a disaster for us being a defensive first team. Few people get to stay with one team there entire career I was truly hoping Smart would be one........
take note smart was worse defensively last seaosn. he was the worst defensive pg on the c's based on the numbers. he and porzingis have the same defensive ranking: 79th pecentile. you are thinking of prime smart. not this declining one. agreed on getting a defensive coordinator though. my vote is KG.
I liked this trade UNTIL I heard Smarts name involved. I have a really bad feeling that if this doesn’t work in the next 2 years we could potentially lose JT or JB or both
@@TheRobversion1smart is 29 years old but now Derek White will be starting our 82 games next year Pritchard claimed that he wanted more minutes, so how would that help us? I mean we have veteran assistant coaches. I’m very sad right now. All of us are because we just lost a family member of the Celtics.
I said during the last minutes of Miami Game 7 that we would be saying goodbye to this team as we knew it. But I never saw this coming. Marcus was improving every year, and as weird as it is I just feel like KP and 2 firsts isn’t enough for a culture changer and a winner to depart. We’ll see what happens with those picks, I can see them flipping this years pick for something and seeing where GS’s pick looks to be shaping up next year and move from there.
What does “running the offense through Smart” Mean? In the playoffs, any action involving Smart is a switch and he’s not good enough as a shooter/scorer inside the arc to run PNR or create efficient shots in the half court
I understand the sadness about Smart’s departure, it sucks! BUT, dude, we now have a top-5 point forward, a top-10 wing, & a top-5 center at 25, 26, & 27 yo, all just entering their prime!! Any GM worth anything would’ve made that trade without blinking!
How does this help out our toughness though? That dude was the only tough one on the roster. I watched the Kristaps highlight reel though and that dude is a monster if he consistently plays like that. Smart was my favorite Celtic and many people don't even realize the things he did to impact the game. Sad stuff. We now have 3 guys that can drop 30 on any given night though. How do you double team Tatum with KP, JP D White and Al Horford on the floor? Who you taking the defender from? Even with Williams, you gonna double Tatum with your big and get burned inside? Good luck.
@@reese5545 Young can randomly drop 30 on anyone. He also was shut down for multiple games in the series as well. Young mostly scored on Horford switches at the top of the key avoid Marcus entirely.
And I’m kind of happy Smart is gone. I got burnt out of feeling like we HAD to keep him and hearing about his defense when every decent guard dropped 30 on us 😂
@@reese5545 and I’ll be honest… he shouldn’t have won DPOY that year. If it was going to be a Celtic, Rob deserved it that year no Marcus. I was also growing tired of Smart feeling like he was a globetrotter and making dumb flashy passes that rarely work for him. I think White turned into what we wanted out of Smart. White had a few 10+ assist games, played great defense, and hits his open shots for the most part. I wouldn’t be upset with him starting but would be kind of annoyed if Smart started another year.
@@bryantlynch4317 I agree. He only won it because Boston media members were hyping him up and everyone else that was contending for it (including Robert) missed too many games. He won it off technicality. His defense severely dropped this season, so much so that the team had a better defensive rating without him. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I was and still am a Marcus fan. I thought he did everything he could to make the team better as a player. Having said that the Celtics are so close to #18 and are doing the city and fans a disservice not to do everything THEY can to close the deal and make the team better.
yeah they could. smart will reset the culture from thug/hood back to grit n grind. if ja doesnt fall in line, it might make sense for the grizz to just move Ja. they have their replacement in smart anyway. imo this is Ja's last shot with them.
I think smart kinda got in the way of it being tatum and browns team. As much as I like marcus this sort of opens things up for everyone and the J's especially
Still the correct move but they did get rid of two 3 pt shooters. Gotta build with some threats from the perimeter then we're done. We've got 2 frp and thats enough to bring good players back
Devasted!! watching Celtic games will not be the same without Smart! He was The Pride, Heart and Soul of the Celtics......this is really hard to stomach, gut punch.......
I think seeing the Clippers backing out was likely more about someone within the team getting thru to whoever was making the decisions and asking "do we really want to add another injury prone player to Kawhi & PG?" so they backed out. It really stinks seeing Marcus Smart go,He's been my favorite Celtics player for years and he always brought an edge to this team that was severly lacking when he was off the court. I wish him nothing but luck going foward with the Griz. I do think that Brad got a great return in this deal though when they added the best player in it along with the only 1st round picks as well. I'd love to see them pick Kris Murray tonight with that #25 pick but I have a feeling that the Kings at 24 will grab him to pair up with his twin brother Keegan. Porzingas should be a great fit on both sides of the ball and it gives Tatum a legit partner for the pick & roll late in games. I do hope that with Smart heading out it now leaves more minutes for Payton Pritchard who may want to stickaround now.
I'm not worried about what Brogdon thinks, the guy has been traded twice in his career and now he moves up the guard depth chart with Smart heading out. He's still on a contender who might have just got better with this Porzingas addition. Malcolm will be fine.
Should’ve traded Grant , D white and maybe Rob Williams. Without Smart the Celtics don’t have the mental edge over teams to get through intense moments in the post season.
@@celticsfaninthedesert4778 not all of them but one of those 3 or 2 . Trading smart for Kristaps isn’t a championship move . Now if they would’ve kept smart and added KP while moving grant or White . Your good
@@MaxPotentialGreatness No, not White and just Grant Williams wouldn’t come close to money working out. R Williams needs to stay even with his injury history. This team hasn’t been able to overcome the tough moments the last few years with Marcus and his tenacity wasn’t ever going to be enough to do that. They needed someone to help break down the zone against Miami and Smart’s offense definitely couldn’t do that. This is a great trade, White in my opinion is a better all around player, cheaper money, and younger.
To hear anything negative here other than missing Marcus sounds insane to an outsider. You retain Derrick White and the 6th man of the year in Brogdon, you gain 2 first round picks, you open up 2 additional roster spots, and the best player in the trade. KP had his healthiest season at 23PPG, made 49% of his shots, so every other shot he takes goes in. This trade is the epitome of a slam dunk when emotions are taken out. I believe they extended porzingis
@@Ishakazulu yup. 38M AAV for 2 years. good contract for both sides.
@@makoygaara yeah joe should be playing a 9-10 man rotation in the regular season and 8-9 man in the playoffs. we have talent and depth. we should be using it.
Thank you Marcus Smart for the years of your hard work and dedication. I'm very sorry to see you go ☘️☘️ you'll always be a Celtic to me. C's forever ❤
As John said, we got "good value" out of the trade.
But, I wanted to win it all with Marcus... its gonna feel 10% less rewarding if/when we do. Not sure how else to put it?
Definitely if*
i dont think we would win a championship if smart was our starting pg . smart will be missed tho. derrick white is better to start.
If Smart would be happy to accept a bench role he could be part of a championship. But Smart has too much pride to do that. Just my opinion
@@peterbaini8752 100 % agreed
All Celts are sad about Smart leaving. Heart and soul of our team 💚
Definitely a sad day Marcus Smart is a great player. Looking forward to the future. Best of luck Marcus!
I’m going to miss seeing that green hair in the playoffs. I always got so psyched when I’d see Marcus out there with that fresh green hair!
I am so sad! Marcus is the floor diver, the veteran heart and the soul of the team. I hate this trade! Thank you Marcus for your hustle and heart.
Glass half full: two firsts for Marcus Smart!
Glass half empty:
1 first and move up 10 spots.
real glass: all star level big, move up 10 spots, a first for a declining smart.
@@TheRobversion1right, I don’t even think a trade like that would get accepted on 2k with trade override on. The Celtics really fleeced for an overrated player.
Man I’m gonna miss Marcus
I wont
@@lordoffaiyum9727why you say that he will now bring leadership to Memphis so now Derrick is starting all 82 out there down the stretch Payton can now think twice before he says he wants a trade
Going to sleep with Brogdon being dealt and waking up to Smart being dealt is one of the biggest gut punches I've felt in a long time as a Celtics fan. I haven't felt like this since Ray Allen signed with the Heat.
Had to be done..plus, actually got great value
felt my soul leave my body when I saw the trade update to being smart going out.
Hagrid: Yer a wizard, Kristaps!
Porzingis: A Celtic, actually.
Love to see Andre Jackson and Sanogo from UConn get drafted by the Cs
hallo from Latvija!
subscribing this canal because of KP trade. where he goes i follow that team.
Brad seems like the belichick in trades 😅
yup. need a backup wing and a backup big.
@@TheRobversion1and Al Horford is the backup
I went from a trade of Brogdon which I was ok with and had come to terms with, to losing my favorite Celtic player in a matter of hours 😭😭😭😭
Funny to see Marcus continue with the Tony Allen comparisons though.
All I can say is you will find me at that first Grizzlies x Celtics home game. I may genuinely cry 😭
We saw how effective the two man pick and roll game with Tatum and a big can be with Rob Williams, so I think Porzingis will be a great fit. He spaces the floor too. Injuries are a concern but I don’t think we could have done any better
I don't see why everyone's complaining they got rid of the heart and soul of a team that couldn't win the championship😅
Celtics fans don’t like winning apparently
Sad to see MS go, but the Celtics had to make a move to improve the team. KP does check some boxes that help them. KP can go his plus he would help against the zone if you use him on the middle.
I love Smart and really wanted to see him win a championship with the Celtics. I am sad.
So sad to see Marcus go. I think he was the soul of this team. Not sure Porzingis will work his butt off on D... We'll see.
funnily, porzingis has the same defensive rating as smart. both are 79th percentile (good, almost great).
Best Celtics podcast, thanks John ☘️☘️
You make excellent points, John;. there's definitely value in this deal. That being said, with Smart gone, the team loses a skilled floor general and the heart of the team and those things are not easily replaced. Smart will definitely be missed.
Great fix for Memphis. Smart was heart & soul of celtics will miss same time good for him. Great for Smart. Have to get behind Kris now
What about JD Davison coming up from Maine to play some PG minutes? He is definitely not the defender Marcus is, but he is fast, athletic and is always hitting the bigs in Maine with great passes.
Absolutely the right call. Smart was outplayed by both white and brogdon last year. If brogdon didn’t get hurt in the playoffs, smart was option 3. He wasn’t the same defensive player and his offense is way erratic.
Yeah unfortunately he had higher trade value than brogdan.
A goodbye to beloved Marcus, hello to John’s ESPN mode with countdown tracker
Everyone saying we got better, I don’t think we did. We got softer. That is our main issue, we needed more dogs. Look who made it to the finals, DOGS, Jokić is the ultimate dog, nothing shakes him tough as hell. Not a good day for the celts.
I am speechless. Never anticipated this day coming. #36
We had smart for almost 10 years and almost work. We need someone like Porziņģis for it to work. I wish smart the best but dude I am so freaking excited to get Porziņģis. Have not been this excited since we got Garnet.
I too love Smart but wasn’t getting it done, more to game than diving on the floor and a few picks. He lacks the mental fortitude to lead the team.
and fell off a cliff last year stats wise, especially defensively. time to give white the keys.
@@TheRobversion1 I hope your right, and agree KG would be a godsend for JT and JB alone.
@@michaelcoffey1991 yeah kg is the right coach to get these guys to play withmore passion.
I liked this trade UNTIL I heard Smarts name involved. I have a really bad feeling that if this doesn’t work in the next 2 years we could potentially lose JT or JB or both
I love this trade 😁
ditto. improves the C's in so many way while geting rid of a roadblock to success.
I literally just got out of the shower after listening to last episode thinking damn next episode is gonna be nuts and here we are
Shout out smart :(
What is this !!!!!!? The heart and soul is gone 😭😭😭 real tears this hurts , not what I expected to wake up to 😭
I'm definitely sadden about this trade. I know the group is going to miss him as well.
Sad to see Marcus smart go 😞
We just lost a family member
Thanks John ☘️
I don't get it. Hate this deal. So much for small changes eh brad?
😂😂😂 Bam adebayo is 5 wins vs 1 loss against Kristaps.....let's go Heat. Another finals assured
Good luck.
Dude so tough getting 30 dropped on him by Trae Young.
@@reese5545 Young can randomly drop 30 on anyone. He also was shut down for multiple games in the series as well. Young mostly scored on Horford switches at the top of the key avoid Marcus entirely.
That ending hurt wow
And I’m kind of happy Smart is gone. I got burnt out of feeling like we HAD to keep him and hearing about his defense when every decent guard dropped 30 on us 😂
Right. His defense dropped significantly. They had a better defensive rating without him on the court. And in the playoffs everyone fried him 1v1.
Smart to Memphis would be huge. Huge. Maybe Ja listens to Smart. That team could use a leader.
yeah they could. smart will reset the culture from thug/hood back to grit n grind. if ja doesnt fall in line, it might make sense for the grizz to just move Ja. they have their replacement in smart anyway. imo this is Ja's last shot with them.
@@TheRobversion1what a stupid comment haha. Move on from Ja because they now have Smart 😂
I think smart kinda got in the way of it being tatum and browns team. As much as I like marcus this sort of opens things up for everyone and the J's especially
I’m new to basketball. Is it possible for celtics to still get back smart in the near future
No
@@celticsfaninthedesert4778 why
Still the correct move but they did get rid of two 3 pt shooters. Gotta build with some threats from the perimeter then we're done. We've got 2 frp and thats enough to bring good players back
The last time I was this sad after a trade is when the Red Sox traded Jon Lester. Another guy I thought would be in Boston his entire career.
Devasted!! watching Celtic games will not be the same without Smart! He was The Pride, Heart and Soul of the Celtics......this is really hard to stomach, gut punch.......
I know Boston sports radio are happy this morning
This is the thanks he gets!
Absolute disbelief. Always thought the Junk Yard Dog would be here until the end.
However, I am glad he got 2 firsts & Porzingis for him...
25 to 30 minutes for Pozingis and no back to back gor him to preserve him through the playoffs
Hi John, any word on when tatum will have wrist surgery?
Should’ve traded Grant , D white and maybe Rob Williams. Without Smart the Celtics don’t have the mental edge over teams to get through intense moments in the post season.
You are crazy
The rest of the NBA fas are bummed at how the rich got richer today. Great job by Brad Stevens
