When I wrote the actual algorithm Vintage Delay for the Eclipse I had in mind the TC2290 clean tone but I wanted to add more vintage sonic features to it, so this can sound as pristine as the TC delay or much warmer as previous delays. The filters are set to very steep intervention and are placed in the feedback path. The TEXTURE parameter, as stated in the manual adds digital artifacts ( like aliasing noise and lower bit quantization) to recreate older delays a bit closer. The overall sonic intention was to create a blend of ADM conversion (Adaptive Delta Modulation) tones (TC2290/DeltaLab Effectron) known to emphasize the attack and bright frequencies with the PCM conversion (Pulse Code Modulation) sound (Lexicon Prime Time I/II/III/PCM42/PCM70) which has a special warm tone and a very musical spatial presence. Not an easy job.... BLACK HOLE2 is not the classic Eventide Black Hole! Just an approximation to it. That's the reason there's a "2" in the name. Eclipse doesn't have the exact algorithm in it and BLACK HOLE remains a 2U Eventides exclusive. ;-)))
Bought a used Eclipse a few years back and paired it with PCM81. Brought a smile to my face and I thought, “finally, I can afford the L.A. sessions guitar sounds from the 80s and 90s.” Then I foolishly sold both units. Bought the Axe Fx III last year and realised that I still want the Eclipse. Found one in mint condition. I’m in heaven again!
Great review! Make sure you have last OS 4.01 which gives you a lot more presets and of course all of the TimeFactor and ModFactor presets built in. Also, while the pitch/mod/delays are great, be sure to spend some time with the overdrive and distortion algorithms (not very well represented in the presets, IMHO), as I lost many hours here tweaking a sound for drum loops that I couldn't get any other way. You can also stack these before or after a delay for some weird crunch. Its also the only Eventide box which allows simultaneous digital and analog connections. For example, I have 1/4" analog input and ADAT from my DAW going in and it has no problem handling both and sending the outputs via 1/4", all configurable. This is such a great box, I sold the H8000 I bought to try to replace it!
im so thankful for this video. everything else on this unit is from 2010. great job showcasing your favourite presets. id love to see more if you get around to it.
Purchased mine a year or two ago, it sat unused in my rack, due to some health issues and I finally said, "F this, time to delve in and see what we can do !!" Of course, that meant making a pit stop here for a crash course on some of your fave programs and I'm glad I did !! What a killer unit, not parting with mine, it's worth the learning curve, thanks Todd, carry on !! 🏆🤘🎶
Been loving my Eclipse since I bought it more than 15 years ago. I think it's a classic. One of the things I love about it is the type of reverbs (kinda like the ones in Reverb 8 or Reverb 16 presets) that can be as long as ten or more seconds, but the tail is so smooth that it doesn't interfere with the direct sound, and almost creates a "pad" sound. Delays are on a whole another level. I use it in my rack with the Triaxis too, but also when I'm mixing, and I want the reverb to be "heard", while I tend to use Lexicons when I what to create more of a real sense of space without the reverb being noticed.. On top of this, I must add that Eventide's customer support is really outstanding: I purchased the H9 Max Out promotion they had up to a few days ago and had some issues with my account for the free plug ins bundle, and they stepped up. So, great products, great brand.
Leon I really got to learn the usage of my Eclipse unit and read the manuals starting now. Those sub menus and stuff is what I need now to get the idea widely. Looks so easy when you adjust it. That damn machine sounded so good in first place that I forgot to read the manuals. I'm so ashamed. Lmao xD Keep up the good work do more vids. Happy New Year! Rockrock =)
Eventide FX are heavenly. That EMT Plate verb is fantastic! It would be great if rack mount gear companies would release a SW editor that you could use to dial in the settings as an alternative. 👍
i had an eclipse for years. absolutely loved it. had to sell it to afford my first axe fx ultra. i still miss it! one of the best sounding fx units out there, imo. i sill use presets i made in the axe fx based on those in the eclipse
Scrolling through the presets made me think of a lot of your Axe patches funnily enough. it's definitely the best sounding "pre-Fractal" processor I've tried to date.
@@LeonTodd i'd agree with that. you'd have to go up the eventide chain to 8000/9000 territory to find better. it definitely has it's own sonic footprint, which i find to be incredibly alluring. it makes everything you put through it just sound better. no idea which firmware you're on, but the latest version includes all the presets from the eventide pedals. it's a pain to update though...
Hi Leon ,, awesome channel you have , Just a curious question about your eclispe , what version software are you running ,, at time stamp 16:88 when you set it to Vintage delay , you scroll to 002 Lt Valet when I scroll to next It goes to 009 echo flange and oo1 is st phaser , maybe my unit needs to be factory reset ,, But I hate changing anything to much on it because they are very fussy, better back up and update first I guess
Awesome vid. The Eclipse goes perfectly with an FM3. You can never get anywhere close to full potential of the Eclipse with it in the effects loop of a regular amp. Although it will probably still sound OK- once you have heard it in all its glory it’s tough to go back to mono. I know Leon knows all this- but some guitarist might think this works flawlessly with a regular guitar amp. It does not. It’s a severe compromise at best. A stereo preamp/power amp/ stereo cabs will be a much better choice. But all Eventide rack units actually prefer a signal directly from mic preamps or in the stereo Aux of a mixer for best results. And yes- amazing build quality. Eventide is the Honda Motorcycle of rack gear.
I have the H9 on my board, but I wish it had the deep levels of control the Eclipse does. I would really appreciate the ability to adjust the filter frequencies on the echoes, and reverbs to a specific hz value. The H9 sounds great too, but it isn't actually as deep as people think it is.
Yeah I have 2 H9s and love them. Like my mini rack of effects on the pedal board. But you are 100% on that they are slightly toned down. Doesn't mean they aren't great, but they make some estimations because they're more guitar/bass/vocals targeted. But holy lord the H9 is to this day so damn good. It's the only digital pedal to survive as long I think in practical use. Only way I would ever get rid of them for studio work is if they release a h9000 + analogue drive/fuzz combo super pedal system. For now I'm happy with the tones never thought could get without having racks and recording.
I had, tc electronic, strymon, hd500, helix lt, and tons of software on the pc.. I bought the eclipse about 6 years ago. It´s still the best purchase i´ve ever made.. and the LT too. Both combined are the BOOOOOMMB!
Another excellent demonstration/explanation. Thank you. Since you asked about video ideas, may I ask you to slip in an explanation/demonstration of Eventide's Swept Verb? It's in the H9 Modechoverb (and the H3000). I can't find much about it online and it doesn't seem to do much in Modechoverb. Either way, keep up the great work. We appreciate it.
Sounds fantastic, do you find much sonic difference between this and the H9? I love old rack stuff, I have the H9 and an axe fxIII. Happy New Year. I wish you and yours health and happiness.
How do you create your own effects? Is there a way to assemble effects-block chains? Or is it like the H9 where you have to buy multiple units and daisy-chain them together? Also, say you have effects changes during a single song, is there any dead space during changes via midi? We know the sounds are great, but how is it in action during a gig? Thanks!
Well now, that was extremely helpful! I was always curious about this unit, but never bought one because I already have the H3000. I've been skeptical about Eventide gear since ownership transferred years ago, wondering if they kept the quality or not. It seems they did. Now, I'll have to go find one. Thanks Leon! As always, your videos are awesome!
Never figured out why someone would want a shimmer, but the crystal echo was actually a nice sound. The UI seems weird. Like reasonable to edit yet something's off in a way that you don't think "ah this is so intuitive and easy" when looking at it. It kinda looks like borrowed pieces, the same way you borrow a block from another preset. Good sounds though.
Jeez what a candys you have...that unit is a totall inspiration, but when I checked the price I fell down from the chair!! I know is not easy question but what do you think if comparing this unit with the Axe F3 FX?
Well Leon . . . You've done it again!!!!After hearing your demo I pulled the trigger on an Eclipse. I have to use 2 Intellifex or 1 Intleelifex and one MPX 1 to do what this unit does on it's own. The sound quality is SOOOO much better and the Eclipse does SO MUCH MORE!!! My rack will be the Syn2 (TDLX and Pittbull) + Syn 50/50 power and the Eclipse in a 4 space. I think I'm done : Þ
Eventide should consider making PCI DSP cards to run plug-in versions of their whole hardware catalogue. The crystal echoes are amazing. Happy new year :)
I'd be all over that - even something like UAD's satellite setup would be great. Crystals, Micropitch and Blackhole all running on a dedicated DSP while mixing would be soooo good. I guess the H9000 kinda does that.
I have the Eclipse and the H9 Max, although the effects are comparable the Eclipse sounds so much richer and thicker , I’m wondering whether the H90 is as good
Eventide makes great algorithms, currently saving up for an Eclipse of my own. Even so, I like having studio level FX in a stomp format; the Poly Digit ...
Because the new, I say new but it’s been over 20 years, because the new Eventide units have an A/B dual processor architecture, users are presented with their first device operating on two different MIDI channels. Now you need something that can communicate on multiple channels. There are powerful solutions, and keyboard players have great advice here, but that’s what lead me to Sound Sculpture switchers. I wanted a solution for my floor board to send patch changes. But watching you dominate the Axe FX units, they built that functionality into their units (yay! 😊) Plus, as expected, it’s your go to unit for gain structures. So the Axe and the Eclipse are best mates. What you’re using the Eventide for, is those classic algorithms and yes, about 100 reverbs. Of course, I would be remiss for not mentioning the Poly Effects unit. You have an informed ear, knowledge of what you’re hearing, so you can bisect audio into parts and pieces and recreate things. Strymon, gulp... they’re incredible sounding and well refined. Stiff competition, and stand alone kick butt algos. Italo has an update for it, all I can say is they’re the dream come true sounds, the perfect combination of tricks to enhance all the new (I say new but...) units. There’s over 1000 sounds in there, but Italo stepped it up considerably. Everything else, if you’re coming from an amp/pedal effects background, it’s shocking how clean a real post process is. Reverbs and Delays take on new width. You’re somewhat spoiled with your Fractal already, but pedal people usually are taken aback with control over everything before it enters the effects, and after, the mix, etc. Each preset will behave differently depending on how much you’re sending in. Expression pedals... everyone loves expression. Thanks Leon, home run. Five star.
It's one of the best examples of what digital audio processing can do when implemented well - like tasting a single origin espresso if all you've ever known is instant coffee. A whole new world.
@@LeonTodd bit depth is a sound. Used in a studio application where every track has a hint of 16 bit, similar to tape hiss and tape compression, it stacks. The absence of slight abnormalities is something engineers complain about, but if you stack a handful of tracks with character, it adds up. In that respect, sending tracks out and through ‘Gorgeous Delay’ adds a cloud. This is where the frequency setting of 1979Hz has worked for me, versus the factory 2036Hz. My bassist picked that frequency, his hearing better than mine.
I want one, but like I said with 500 presets I need to get back to messing with my H3000 D/SX eventide and I'm sure it's got most all those and I believe I recall Blackhole sun.
Awesome! That 296 micropitch sound is out of this world! Same configuration of Landau famous SPX90 "womanizer"(-11,+13), but with a little extra touch of lushness!
I've been following Leon for a while and i LOVE the reviews, gear and demo's! but i can't afford almost all of the gear reviewed. Can i get some suggestions for good places to search for used gear that sounds good. Unfortunately my budget (when i have one that is) is pretty damn low, ie a few hundred bucks. Thank You and THANKS LEON!! You play some gorgeous tunes mate...
Very cool. Never even knew this existed. Is it an old product or new? Sounds great and that Strat is to doe for!!!! That Micro pitch shift sound, or what I call the Steve Vai sound is just killer and it makes guitars just sound epic. Very cool. Be safe sir.
yeah, man ;)) hey leon, greetz from germany eventide-sound has changed my 'sound-design-life' ... as a guitarist a whole different experience ;)) - sound-sound-sound how can you compare the sound with the axe-fx? tom
The Eclipse sounds phenomenal. Would love to get one but the H9 does a really good job as it is. Would be interesting for you to compare several similar presets in the Eclipse and H9.
Agreed. A comparison between them would be really cool - especially since you can find brand new H9 pedals for sale for around half of what a used Eclipse seems to sell for on Reverb.
My Eventide experience now is so much nicer with app interface. Eventide make extremely complex gear. My personal major experience was a DSP4000b+. Even with the connection capability and the gui diagram interface you could run over com port.. it was frightening!. Lol, but the sounds, it’s why I jumped at getting the H9 Max and now the Timefactor. I have the H9 app talking on Bluetooth and usb on my iPad to each as needed. It’s fun to play with lots of different stuff always of course, if you can :).
They're both absolutely A grade pieces of gear. The Eclipse has a real distinct character about it (vintage delays, microshift and Blackhole really stand out as good examples) but then the Axe gives your so much power and routing flexibility. I've got a lot of videos on the Axe-Fx so if you want to watch some effect specific vids try the "reverb designer", "delay designer" and multitap delay deep dive vids. The emulations of classic analog effects and then the amp and cab modeling are unreal too.
@@LeonTodd so in other Words for a Guitarist the Axe would be the better Choice. Can the Axe also do this Ambience Stuff like the Eclipse. Thanks a lot Leon.
@@LeonTodd thats correct atm they are planning more soon tho.the quad cortex uses machine learning so it should theoretically be able to down the line if the nueral boys put in the time

Okay... Stop. I only have so much money in the bank. Great demo, and amazing playing, Keep on enabling all of us gear heads. Maybe. Some day. If I ever grow up. I might actually play guitar and not have people walk out the room. Best to you for 2021.. Cheers 🍻
Great vid m8. I ordered mine late last year, still waiting for it to arrive.......There is a guy in Italy who sells patches for this unit, gonna try the Pink Floyd set he has created. Stay safe.

That's the good stuff right there hey. I should compare it to the spx detune.
@@LeonTodd I'm glad to hear that!
I've got a vid planned around that whole topic actually - basically what units to look for at decent price points depending on the sounds you want.
@@LeonTodd EXCELLENT! Cheers Brother.
Man, I would get one for the mictropitch only. Sounds amazing.
Amazing, on a slightly different note, do you wish the axe fx had more fx loops ala the helix so you could hookup more outboard gear?
There's 3 sets of stereo I/O and a mono instrument in so you could set it up to have 7 mono loops which is overkill even for me!
I loved this video!...I loved your happiness faces!...now I bought an Eventide Eclipse for myself!....you pushed me from the cliff!!...😂😂🤘🤘🎸🎸
Congrats! You're in for a treat
@@LeonTodd great!...
Great video!
Thanks mate. Awesome unit
Are you able to get tri chorus like tones out of this unit?
Very cool. Never even knew this existed. Is it an old product or new?
Sounds great and that Strat is to doe for!!!!
That Micro pitch shift sound, or what I call the Steve Vai sound is just killer and it makes guitars just sound epic.
Very cool.
Be safe sir.
Nearly 20 years old but still in production! Absolute beast.
Some effects esentially make the music for you and around what you play. In small doses that can be quite effective and ambient.
Truly wondrous sound quality. Ethereal
yeah, man ;)) hey leon, greetz from germany
eventide-sound has changed my 'sound-design-life' ... as a guitarist a whole different experience ;)) - sound-sound-sound
how can you compare the sound with the axe-fx? tom
killer video! what would you use to switch effects live with this unit?
I'd go with a small midi controller like the Airstep but you could also attach an expression pedal and blend it in to taste.
The Eclipse sounds phenomenal. Would love to get one but the H9 does a really good job as it is. Would be interesting for you to compare several similar presets in the Eclipse and H9.
The Eclipse has all the Factor series algos so it should make for a good comparison with the H9!
I’d be interested in an H9 comparison too. I think we may be very surprised at the results.
Agreed. A comparison between them would be really cool - especially since you can find brand new H9 pedals for sale for around half of what a used Eclipse seems to sell for on Reverb.
yes, please do compare these two devices... I‘m really interested to see how the H9 compares!
You could buy another h9 and it would almost be like having a Eclipse.
Is this a good unit for a smoker?
Jealous, picked up a G-Major recently but this is definitely on my bucket list too.. tasty sounds.
I used to gig a G major, loved that thing
ECLIPSE is one of the best rack 1 space unit. Dual engine. You can use two FACTOR alogirithms at the same time.
Series, parallel or dual mono too. Beast!
Hi .Where did you get your Strat?
Dude, Rockman XPR. We gotta make this happen.
You should try and make a rack rig with a couple preamps, eclipse, and any other effects you’d want to add and do a little play through with it
Soon :D
My Eventide experience now is so much nicer with app interface. Eventide make extremely complex gear. My personal major experience was a DSP4000b+. Even with the connection capability and the gui diagram interface you could run over com port.. it was frightening!. Lol, but the sounds, it’s why I jumped at getting the H9 Max and now the Timefactor. I have the H9 app talking on Bluetooth and usb on my iPad to each as needed. It’s fun to play with lots of different stuff always of course, if you can :).
So good hey! Now I need to try a H9000....
Leon, how would you compare the Eclipse Effects to the ones in the Axe FX3 ?
I have an Eclipse and think about to switch to an Axe FX 3.
Yeah I've been able to recreate most of my favourite eclipse stuff
Nice reverbs.
Gonna have to do a nueral capture of one of these later when I get my quad cortex
My understanding is the capture function won't work on time based effects like delay, pitch shifting and reverb.
@@LeonTodd thats correct atm they are planning more soon tho.the quad cortex uses machine learning so it should theoretically be able to down the line if the nueral boys put in the time
Eventide is the real deal, there's no denying that!
Reputation well deserved
Max Martin used eventide eclipse reverb on some britney spears and backstreet boys songs and more
I might sell the eventide reverb impulse response for kontakt player for those who don't own the hardware unit
Okay...
Stop. I only have so much money in the bank.
Great demo, and amazing playing,
Keep on enabling all of us gear heads.
Maybe. Some day. If I ever grow up. I might actually play guitar and not have people walk out the room.
Best to you for 2021..
Cheers 🍻
This unit is insanely cool... but the load times can be a problem.
Great vid m8. I ordered mine late last year, still waiting for it to arrive.......There is a guy in Italy who sells patches for this unit,
gonna try the Pink Floyd set he has created. Stay safe.
It's not the mythical Italo de Angelis is it?
micro step sound great, Any micro step ideas for H9?
Use the microshift algo and try the mix at 50% with -11c on one side and +13 on the other. Set delay 1 and 2 to short delays (3 - 10ms) and go!
Best processor around.
Why is the input on the back?
Most rackmount studio gear has rear inputs - easier to connect in a rack
It seems very versatile but, there's a lot of scope for getting 'lost' here.
yeah it's a very dense machine
massive
How many effects can the Eclipse run at the same time?
2 algorithms at a time. But some of the algos are made up of multiple FX.
Some of these presets caused my pants to undulate
It's cool. Not sure it's two thousand dollars cool. :)
Listen to Gustavo Cerati. He was the best using eventide effects.
Esta es la máquina detrás de Sueño Stereo! Lo usó en Disco Eterno y acabo de escuchar el efecto del bajo de Pasos en el minuto 11:30
Sounded like Queensryche Empire album
One of my all time favourite records
