@@betheden7700 Those are big topics and not my genres of expertise, but I am a bookseller so I'm happy to make a recommendation. Is there a specific part of history or democracy that is of interest to narrow it down a bit?

On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder
Democracy or Else by Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor
Shameless by Bryan Tyler Cohen (of RUclips)
These are great books to start with. Also, Rachel Maddow’s recent book Prequel deals with a previous attempt to destroy American democracy during WWII. She digs deep into history for this one.
As for history in general, I can recommend two authors: Erik Larson and Nathaniel Philbrick. They each have several books on different episodes in history and they won’t steer you wrong.

Honestly, I’m tired of being afraid to put a political sign in my yard… so out goes a Harris Walz’s sign for me this week. The last sign I had out there was to support Beto. BTW… I’m in blue Dallas county in red Texas.

We have two yard signs for Montana candidates running as democrats and can’t wait to add a Harris Walz sign when we can!
My state is always very heavily blue, so no one puts signs out except the Republican voters. (They also like to wear crude offensive t-shirts.) So in 2020 they were all claiming the election in our state was stolen too, because they didn't see any Biden signs. I'm getting a Harris/Waltz sign.

I haven't frequented this channel for very long, but for what it's worth I'm proud of you for persisting with speaking your mind on the election and encouraging people to vote, Greg, especially when some evidence points to certain people tuning out because of it.
My perspective is that reading a book - any book, it doesn't matter which one - is inherently a political act. Books go hand-in-hand with politics, just look at who bans/burns books and why. Throughout history, and quite prominently in American history, certain demographics have been (sometimes violently) discouraged from reading because they learn from it, become empowered by it, and get inspired by it. So there's a lot more overlap between literature (especially discussing literature) and politics than people tend to think. Books have power: the story may be apocryphal, but Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said to Harriet Beecher Stowe (the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin), 'So you are the little woman who started the big war.'
Moreover, though, the upcoming election is an event of significant importance which has the power to change world history and will certainly affect day-to-day life for many Americans. To paraphrase Marx, there is a spectre haunting the United States of America and its name is fascism. Even when it's not directly addressed, it's still present in the room because it's so consequential, so it would be weirder to not say anything at all about it.
These are just some thoughts to encourage you and help anyone who reads this to shape reasons why we need to be talking about this. I'll look forward to more of your thoughts on books, the universe and everything! 😁
You are so right to be talking about politics right now and getting people to register and then vote - your t-shirt says it all. I'm in the UK (British citizen) and following the presidential election closely - go Harris-Walz we need you in the White House both for you guys and because of the US' impact on the World. I hope that their campaign continues its momentum and that as a result you feel less anxious as we get to November 🤗🤗 PS recently read Diane Oliver's 'Neighbors and Other Stories' on your recommendation - terrific and I hope her work continues to get the recognition that it deserves.

I am from the Uk and it is so important to remind people to vote. The riots over here have reminded me of the danger of people who feement racial divsion in society. I think Walz as Vp pick was inspired the whole democratic campaign seems to have been revitallised

Even though you read only one book this week, you still had plenty to say so I hope you won’t feel pressure to race through books for the sake of the channel. I sometimes hurry through books because there are so many good books waiting for me. I occasionally have to remind myself to slow down and savor the experience.
That’s definitely something I’ve learned-there’s always enough to talk about (especially for me, since I love to talk anyway). And with books like these, it’s easy to keep talking.
Good morning. I am reading and listening to One Hundred Saturdays by Michael Frank. This is a beautiful book. I read The Phantom Tollbooth with my 13 year old goddaughter. It was an amazing experience that at times it seemed we were reading and talking about two different books. Keep reading
The best children’s literature hits on those two different levels, it also a great reason to go back and read books from when you were a kid and finding a whole new story.

I’m all in for the JOY that the Harris/Walz ticket is bringing! I just wish the election were closer. It feels miles and miles away and that’s a bit scary.
I finished the audiobook of The Safekeep earlier this week. It’s a book that really took its time growing on me. The first part was very slow for me and hard to get into. The second part was completely different (IYKYK) and much more compelling, but the book still wasn’t pulling together for me. But BOOM! I got to the third part and it was suddenly all there for me. I ended up liking it quite a bit, probably 4.5 stars. Definitely worth the time.
The Safekeep is such an interesting book to talk about because I was the same way. I wasn’t sure I liked it but the last portion of the book was so compelling that I might love it? And I’ve heard the same from someone else.
With the passing of Edna O'Brien, I pulled her memoir from my shelves and it was a terrific read. Highly recommend it. Next it's her novel which caused a lot of controversy in Ireland, In the Forest. As you like movies, I hope you get the chance to see the adaptation of John McGahern's novel That They May Face the Rising Sun - well done, but I preferred the book, one of my favourites of all time.
Here for the chatty bits. Ahh, fond memories of book chats on the couch. 🥰 I am savoring a few books right now and am getting so much more out of the stories. I had become stressed out that I had bought so many books that were recommended on booktube and now have no idea when I will get to them. As far as buying new releases, I remember a Pluggers comic strip where the car shopper was looking at the new cars stating he was just looking to see what he will be driving in 10 years. I love it when I finish a book and I immediately want to read it again. I did that a few years back with Strange Weather in Tokyo and The Lesser Bohemians. Pride and Prejudice was another one.
The History of Sound seems like something I should try.
