I'm not a vegan but I eat very little meat and no dairy - so about as close as you can get - and she's missing all the fruit and veg I'd normally eat. The "staples" of vegan are not expensive, but the fresh produce in a city is VERY expensive. I'm in downtown Chicago and spend probably $30-$40 weekly just on fruit and veg - everything else on top adds up to about $50-$60 a week. Take away the fruit and veg and sure I could spend just that $35 a week. vegan or primarily plant-based is expensive in cities, when I lived in Michigans countryside there were small farms selling produce EVERYWHERE for so cheap, it would be much cheaper there to be plant-based or vegan.
Thank you June, for the inspiration. It's funny how your video is about cooking on a budget, but after watching you, I feel a lot more hope in life in general. I really do feel happier and thanks again for all the ideas. I was just about to give up on cooking then your channel popped up. 🧡🧡🧡
I used to eat rice, tomato and eggs when I was in college. It was delicious too. Or I could eat rice and omelette and I put sweet soy sauce on top of it. Oh also you should try to make nasi goreng when in budget too. Sweet soy sauce is the answer for all of low budget college student here in Indonesia 😂
Your dishes look good, easy to make, and doesn't require a lot of time. I especially like that you didn't use high priced gadgets but used simple things like a clear bowl, a stir pot, a cookie pan, metal mixing bowl, and spices that everyone may have in their cabinets to achieve these dishes.
The wing it method is so me. I took a simple recipe for sausage, caramelized onions and peppers for hoagies and the next thing I knew it had 2 different peppers, caramelized sweet onions and fried white onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, beef stock, a mountain of spices, ginger and garlic. It became such a great topper, I cooked rice in beef stock while steaming beans, corn, limas, carrots. No leftovers.

This video has inspired me to cook and try new things! It’s so easy to get into a rut, especially when you’re busy, but you make everything look so simple! Love these videos!
Been binge watching by June since this videos. and its trigger something in me to make random recipe out of everything i have left in fridge.
Just done making some eggplant curry (1,5 weeks old eggplant, sitting in the corner of my crisp drawer) with chicken katsu and brown rice instead ordering delivery (which i used to do).
Thanks June!
Wow one of the best episodes ever, for the situation we're in.
“Tom and I are not on speaking terms...” 😂
“Vegan is expensive” people say, but she had to be plant based to save money
Consumerist culture and advertising idealized lifestyles to further sell unnecessary *things* will make anything more expensive than it has to be.
I love how accurate this comment is
I'm not a vegan but I eat very little meat and no dairy - so about as close as you can get - and she's missing all the fruit and veg I'd normally eat.
She spent a ton of time cooking. Sure it can be done, but most people don't have this kind of creativity.
@@CinderCass You can buy frozen fruits and veggies for less. 🤔
Thank you June, for the inspiration. It's funny how your video is about cooking on a budget, but after watching you, I feel a lot more hope in life in general. I really do feel happier and thanks again for all the ideas. I was just about to give up on cooking then your channel popped up. 🧡🧡🧡
When she just walks out with the food. MOOD.
The amount of naps she took made me feel better about myself. Also I miss Tom..
"Because.. what are days any more"
LOL... so true.
Two years ago my husband and I challenged ourselves to stay on a 50$/wk groceries and I live in NYC as well . It
Can definitely be done ! We stayed on it for 6 months and then increased it to 75$/week for two persons .
Great job! I live in the mountains of NC and I still spend about $300 a month on groceries. I haven't specifically tried to budget like that or plan my meals but I tend to buy a lot of whole foods and try not to buy pre packaged meals.
This was such an amazing video! I wasn't even slightly bored at any given time. Your creativity is so damn impressive. You guys should do this more often!
I am dying with Tom's commentary. "what in tarnation" lmao
Yes - I had to rewatch that part a few times as it was so funny!
Girl its "Mah-Juh-duh-ruh", you totally said it like it's French 🤣. Its Arabic and so simple. No herbs traditionally, but we eat it with just yogurt on top. Caramelize onions, salt and pepper, lentils cook 5 mins prior, then add rice and cook until rice is done. Plain yogurt on top. My childhood 🤤
Hahaha same that's what I was thinking
My mom cooks it with burghul and we eat it with either cabbage-tomato-cucumber salad or saltat laban oo qhiar (yogurt-cucumber-garlic salad)
@@rainbowgeekster866 There we go! We would do a salad too, just lettuce, tomatoe, onion, dressed with a mix of lemon, olive oil, salt, and pepper. I'm having cravings just talking about this haha
I lived in New York before and it's quite expensive when it comes to renting a room or apartment so it's nice if one could live on a budget for food but still healthy and delicious.
“I need to eat more veggies, get more fiber in my diet” and sis over there eating legumes and rice for every meal, what you mean get more fiber lmao 😂
i thought rice is carbohydrates...its that count as fiber?
@@GoodBoy-wn9sd well.... the brown rice does have more fibre compared to white ones
@@bazli83 Yeah but its still not enough.
Bland food ew
veggies for vitamins not fiber. but beans have tons of vitamins and minerals as well
Can i just say, I watched this last night, and when I woke up I was craving for the cheese and tomatoes, and so I cooked it, AND IT WAS SO GOOD.
Never even heard of this channel nor of June but her energy I love!!!
Which did I love more? The creativity, the plantbased options, the sense of humor?
MOARRRRRRRR! I love this. Can she get her own channel? I'm sure she's got other responsibilities, but she is a star so she should just focus on these recipe vids (if she wants). I'd love to see more budget *savory* recipes and maybe 1 Michelin star-ish dish that she shows how to make step by step.
She has her own channel called junelikesthemonth
I enjoyed this video and especially your sense of humor.
Stumbled upon this and couldn't stop watching June go through the week! It's highly entertaining and I absolutely loved the honesty and humor. Although, I won't be able to make it through the week with so much beans (they don't like me) :( Totally rocked it, June!
Gurl, I relate when you were like "it's tuesday and...just...put alcohol in it. I don't care..just put it in." Hahaha. Love your videos♡!
Being diabetic this diet would send my sugars flying. Im not Keto, but my carb intake would only be 1/2 cup a day. Try canned tuna, 1 chicken for the week, fresh greens, mushrooms, Penut butter is ok. You ate three very filling meals. I would consider nut milk a for breakfat, or fast and eat two meals.
Your recipes looked amazing, very creative. Carbs do give you endless options. Try quinoa as well. Always have onion, eggs, celery, carrot on hand. My mom used to make potatoes, eggs, and onions..
Goodluck.
@@diananoonen2262 I hear you!
My chronic illness demands I don't eat sugar, carbs from grains, whole uncooked veggies, or animal meats. No tomatoes, onion or garlic either (high histamine foods).
The baby food textured stews she makes with lentils and the hummus are my jam lol.
@@diananoonen2262 when my bf was diagnosed with type one he didnt know peanut butter had carbs, it's been a learning experience.
@@diananoonen2262 interesting comment, thanks
Love her but miss kitty
“Did you just black out..?”
😂😂 I feel that, sometimes I get lost in the food too 😅
I have made vanilla syrup for pancakes:
1 cup of water,
2 cups of sugar,
2 tbl spoons of vanilla
And cook it as you're making the pancakes. Enjoy!
How about a “food bank” special where you cook everything that a food bank gives you and you stretch it for as long as possible.
Really cool concept, but wouldn't it take away ressources from the people who rely on the food bank?
Well, I guess she could donate the food after. Or just get a list of the ingredients and buy them herself
That is a most excellent idea.
@@lolakrivosic She can get her own stuff but do a "paper shop" through a food bank to get the exact ingredients they have available to them.
- In Winter.
Yes please
I'm absolutely stunned with your genius and delicious cooking. Speechless.
Hi. Watched the whole thing, my 3 yr old son also watched some with me. I use oat flour as well, and love to cook as frugally as possible. I love having progressive meals. Cook chicken day 1, roast veggies, soak beans. Day 2 make chicken bone broth, cook beans. Day 3 make soups, refried beans. Etc. Love how food can be brought back to life again in a different meal. Great job.
This is the best cooking video I've ever seen! This is like all my favourite themes combined: budgeting, meal planning, vegetarian cooking. I'm so eager to try some of the recipes when I get an oven.
This is my new favorite thing to watch! June being real and creating budget eats.
I'm from Omaha Nebraska. And we eat budget friendly and get our spices from tiny Mediterranean grocery store close by. It's how we are able to afford living on 1 income ❤
"When in doubt, add more salt." I think I just found my lifelong mantra
I just happen to stumble onto your video and actually watched the entire thing. It was so fascinating and I love how you were able to use all the groceries that week in various ways!
This is the content I'm hungry for while Bon Appétit is on fire. Delish yall better capitalize 👀
Please make a channel doing this WAY.. MORE... OFTEN! You’ve helped me save so much money, as well as my sanity during quarantine.
I miss June! I need her content in this economy.
this is the most creative and entertaining budget meal week video I've watched and i LOVED it
Omg so entertaining and honest ! We need more of this 😊
June this is actually an insanely good video and I am so amazed the variety you are able to demonstrate
Watching June cook turns my whole day around for the positive. Such an amazing human being and (obviously) awesome chef 😎
I shopped like this for the first few weeks of stay-at-home. I was a restaurant manager who had not steady source of income on the horizon. I managed to up my freelance hours, so am more secure now, but I am sill being mindful. I love this. Also, I love that pup - his face!!!!
Loved this video! No doubt the most creative meals I've ever seen on a budget haul. Also loved Tom's cameo.
