"Fear and Terror": Gaza Photographer Ahmed Zakot on Documenting the Carnage of Israel's Assault

As Israel continues bombarding the Gaza Strip, we speak with a Palestinian photographer who recently fled the territory with his family. Ahmed Zakot has been documenting Gaza for the last 25 years, and two of his photographs were just featured in a project by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and published by Rolling Stone earlier this month in a piece titled "Gaza's Carnage Through the Eyes of Palestinian Photojournalists." One of Zakot's photos shows a Gaza neighborhood lit up by Israeli airstrikes at night, while the second is of thousands of Palestinians fleeing their homes with their belongings in a scene reminiscent of the 1948 Nakba that displaced some 700,000 Palestinians from their homes. "It reminds me [of] what my grandfather told me about this displacement. It's the same [that] happened since 1948 - now we are in 2024," Zakot says.

I remember watching videos of people leaving the North in the very beginning when i saw an old woman in a wheel chair, all by herself, scooting herself along...I think that was the first time I cried... I'm getting teared up just thinking about it. I felt so bad for her, I was imagining what she must be feeling, and just random thoughts like that, when the sentence "to be going through this twice..." popped into my head, and that's what made me lose it. She's older than Israkhhhhell, was forced out as a child, and now again as an old woman. 😭

I'm reading "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" by Ilan Pappe. The terror tactics against the Palestinians and lack of remorse shown by the Israeli public have not changed in 80 years, although the tools of destruction have gotten thousands of times more deadly.
Ilan Pappé looked through the national archives' 1948-documents in the '80s, before they were reclassified.
These documents were written by the delinquents themselves, and include specific orders to demolish villages.
Ilan's works, interviews and lectures are musts for every honest person.

I like that Ahmed is calling it a war it legitimatizes their fight ( even though we know it’s not) rather than being called terrorist. I feel sad for their struggle in our 21st century! It is no cynicism to say that we owe to Israel the liberation of our collective psyche from the instrumental exploitation of the Holocaust. Israel has given us the right to forget, as Nietzsche would have acknowledged. It is this forgetfulness that will empower us to bring Israel to justice, tear down the racist colonialist state, and rebuild one democratic state for all the people.

He didn't really answer the last question about who you have to pay off and how much it costs to get out of Gaza, but the whole thing is absolutely shameful to begin with.
I wrote a response about this on here but have no idea if it will get through or not. The entity that has to be paid off is a corporation called the Organi Group. Its CEO is Ibrahim al-Organi (who grew up as a Bedouin in the northern Sinai) and he enjoys very close ties with the Egyptian president, el-Sisi, and Egyptian intelligence. The Organi Group is the umbrella for many enterprises, including arms dealing, construction, and travel. The Organi Group's travel business is called Hala and before Israel's ongoing genocidal assault on the inhabitants of Gaza, al-Organi charged 650 USD per adult for expedited exit through the Egyptian border. Now it charges between 5k and 10k per adult. Al-Organi could not do this without the direct involvement of the Egyptian government. In order to raise the required funds, the relatively low number of Palestinians who are able to exit Gaza are taking out loans (Egyptian loans???) or raising the funds on Go Fund Me (through relatives outside Gaza). I think the photographer mentioned none of this in his response because he wants to get his brothers and their families out and it probably would not be smart to bring attention to al-Organi's government aided profiteering off Israel's assault on fellow Muslims (and Christians).
