Dead Reckoning is the latest book by today's guest Dick Lehr, and is the epic story of the high-stakes operation undertaken to kill Admiral Yamamoto, the man behind the attack on Pearl Harbor. At Station Hypo on Hawaii U.S. Navy code breakers discovered exactly where and when to find Admiral Yamamoto and on April 18, 1943 a nerve-wracking mission departed to kill him. Dick will talk about Major John W. Mitchell, the ace fighter pilot from the tiny hamlet of Enid, Mississippi who was tasked with conceiving a flight route, literally to the second, for the only U.S. fighter plane on Guadalcanal capable of reaching Yamamoto hundreds of miles away - the new twin-engine P-38 Lightning with its fabled “cone of fire.”
Dick Lehr is an American author, journalist and a professor of journalism at Boston University. www.dicklehr.com/

Lindburg worked with the Guadalcanal P38 squadrons on fuel saving. He worked out leaning the mix, slower cruising, and extended the cruising range considerably. Made this trip possible.
If the Japanese didn't smell a rat after Midway regarding code breaking then nothing would.
Every single man on that mission should get credit for its success. We want to assign glory to the actual trigger man, but every man on that mission should be recognized.
After watching the show here in Manila, I bought the Kindle version of the book so I could read it right away. I remember reading that article by Lanphier in Reader's Digest, "I Shot Down Yamamoto." Dirk's book puts this article, and other writings, in a contextual perspective that explains the post-mission actions of Lanphier, Barber, Mitchell, Halsey. I still have that Digest article, and having finished Dirk's book overnight, I see the inconsistencies, the brazen mistruths and most importantly I understand the characters better and emphasize with them -- all of them, from Mitchell to Yamamoto -- even more.
He would undermine the moral of the troops. That is leadership.
Sorry not working for me
Saw P-38 'Scatterbrain Kid' at an airshow. Sadly not long after it crashed in Louisiana. Such a cool plane. Another Kelly Johnson nasterpiece.
Fascinating. Thank you
I found out about Operation Vengeance in 1970 and as a know-it-all brat I questioned the awarding of the Navy Cross to Army pilots. Six years later, as a brand-new Marine, I learned the answer--the Army pilots were OPCON to the Navy and awards came through Navy channels.
Coastwatchers. Not Coastal Watchers.Words are important.
You fired up my interest in the Pacific Theatre again, Paul and Dick. I built scale models of P-38s 50 years ago because of this story. It's what made me go for a pilot's license. Now, decades later, WW2TV has brought childhood memories and my Dad's stories about the Pacific war alive again.
Thank you, WW2TV.
Really enjoyed this show with Dick Lehr on the killing of Yamamoto by the U.S. during ww2 in the Pacific Theatre. Well balanced and quite interesting. The side bar chat, as always, is full of fun and intellectual information. ww2tv is a treasure.
Fascinating show with amazing information and details from Mr. Lehr. The letters: Extraordinary!
Thank you, very well done
Excellent show! I knew the story but none of the details so this was very enlightening. I headed straight to the link to your bookstore. His book is a must read for me! Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.
Another great show, Paul. Quality content of the highest calibre.
I was lucky enough to meet and talked with both Besby Holmes (on the kill section) and Julius "Jack" Jacobson. (John Mitchell's wingman)
Another exciting episode from the Pacific. The details on the quick planning, and navigation course across the open water were fascinating. Amazing that this plan worked to perfection with everything that could have gone wrong. I have added Mr. Lehr's book to my growing list of books that I must get. Excellent program as I have come to enjoy from your channel. Thanks Paul!!!
Great, great video discussion, PW! I have picked up a copy of Dick's book. My uncle was in the 3rd Marine Division. They were on Guadalcanal as well as a few other islands. I'm fired up to read DL's book!
