Jack! So so great to know you're okay now. This video was incredible to watch and see what you've been through over the past few years. You are an unbelievable talent and I am so happy that things are getting better for you now. We NEED to hang and play soon! I think this video will help a lot of people.

The accent is fine. I just have to pitch you up a major 3rd to fit into my hearing range! But seriously, more power to you man. Thanks for sharing your war stories. You're not alone in the fight. I respect you majorly for pulling back rather than faking your feelings and being another like-chasing blowhard on social media while secretly dying inside. The pressure to make everything look fine is just another layer of crap that creative people don't need. Keep being real cause you're helping every person watching. Welcome back.

Right when you mentioned pains in the chest and body it hit me, a few years ago I had something similar but only a few times, I went to the doctor who said I've got symptoms of post traumatic stress, something to do with high blood pressure correlated to anxiety, sleeping problems and like too much energy in my body so I couldn't sleep or something, and fixating on memories from Edinburgh where I experienced/witnessed very violent events. All she recommended was daily exercise to the point where you make yourself sweat at least once a day, and don't smoke which thankfully I don't anyway. Daily exercise helped me a lot. Maybe it tired me out enough so I could sleep better, and released the endorphines to at least temporarily ward off any overly negative feelings. Thankfully I didn't officially have PTSD, just stress from some trauma. It sounds like your situation was much worse and took a lot longer to recover from. Oh yeah and the depersonalization thing I used to get that when I was really young.
Would love to see any new content from you, I enjoy your gospel inspired playing especially. Greetings from Scotland, Robbie

Welcome back Jack! Its really cool to hear your talking through what's been going on, sorry to hear you've had it so rough. I'm sure a lot of pro guitarists watching this are going to relate heavily to some of the feelings you had (playing covers/social media wise) I know I have. Its really cool you found the right help. I'm looking forward to having my face melted by whatever you do next, you're a super inspiring player. It sounds like you've been doing some amazing stuff already, keep being you and awesome!

I truly applaud your courage and honest purpose in posting this video. Too few people discuss issues like this and it's especially true within the music industry. I've known a lot of musicians over many, many years who have suffered in silence trying to 'beat' depression and a whole host of other mental health problems. I really hope your video will give people who are going through the toughest of times the impetus to get help and not be ashamed of doing so. All the best you, Pete

Yes, make some more vids of your mental health techniques. I lost my mom a few months back-the day before you released this video, I see-and feel these would help, as I've been sort of obscure on social media myself for the past year and a half or so. Much of my own absence has been utter burnout from teaching rather than creating my own stuff.
Also, I'd love to see some videos on your approaches to creating/mixing backing tracks. Been trying to create my own pieces lately and can't seem to get as nice of a mix as I hear your tracks.
Lastly, it would be nice to see some of your daily practice techniques/regimens and maybe a montage of how your approach to learning the fretboard/guitar over the years has evolved and what you most attribute your knowledge on the guitar to.
Looking forward to more content from you, and glad to see you're doing much better.

Sure, every professional musician playin such gigs, because that's somehow your financial ground month for month. I rarely comment on videos like this but I want you to know your story touched me as I have been going through the same thinf, and around the same time and age too. Hey man, really glad you feel more centered and in a better state. I went through a similar thing, and to be honest it’s been the worst year of my life, won’t go into details not the place to do so but the highlight of it was it really forced me to acknowledge that I needed to change my approach and not sway from what needed to be confronted. On the a really positive note, I’ve never wanted to be a better guitarist/musician than ever before, it took me til I was thirty to finally get that true motivation to confront this from correct perspective. In simple terms life intervened in a way that simply forced me to face this.

  • @lowyaw
    @lowyaw 4 года назад +4

A huge part of musicians / visual artists I know went through all that shit you describe in the first part of the video. Myself included. 22 to 27 years of age, as a rule. I guess that's the other half of what comes as the "artistic mentality" deal. One of the therapists I talked to believed it all was due to the fact that many artists are forcing their mind to process information at accelerated rates, as in "absorb more, absorb faster to deliver more and even faster", etc., and such mind, in guitar terms, goes into overdrive. It feeds back LOL good news it phases out with age.

Kudos to you reaching out my man, it's an incredibly tough subject to tackle and especially talk about ...
I have a few friends and close relatives who suffer from the same, and it's incredibly hard to understand what they're going through but I'm always learning new ways of trying to be there to help.
I'm no expert by any means but I always like to feel that I'm there for anyone whenever they need someone to lean on.
I wish you all the best and really hope you tackle this issue, you're an incredibly talented guitarist, one of which I have looked up to for a long time now, being 27 myself I'm always learning and giving up and learning etc etc, I watch guys like you and it picks me back up again!

Some really inspiring stuff right here. I agree, mental health should definitely be talked about more openly in the music industry in general. The journey of practicing, gigging and chasing that next level with only your personal demons accompanying you for years on end can seriously take a major toll on musicians. Sometimes we just need to take a step back and balance it out a little bit with some other stuff. Regular exercise, sleep and a healthy balanced diet when possible really goes a long way, especially regarding musicians since we tend to ignore all that stuff in favour of our passion. Mental and physical health are intertwined and I think if we got that covered we can keep pushing on. Glad you're back and recovered your love for the music again. Keep it real :)

I've been through some mental problems myself and it is absolutely understandable that one needs to stay away from things like social media etc. Nowadays, things got too overwhelming and you need to build your own filter for that, in order to not go crazy. I've had a very similar experience in years gone by and am not totally free of it either. If you're considering another video about how you dealt with it in more depth, I'd very much like to hear that. This is all a lot more common place than people realise I think, and people hearing about how you dealt with it would almost certainly help a lot of other people..if you don't mind discussing it of course.

When CBT is done right it can be very helpful indeed. I used to have clinical level OCD, but no longer have it because of a guy that taught me CBT well.
I combined what I learnt from CBT with mindfulness which only improved things further.
I've been a fan of your playing for many years, ever since you did a cover of Rob Marcello's "Neoclassical Guitar Solo" video when you were like 15 or something.
Ever since then I've always tuned in!
As for your future uploading? You should just record and upload whatever you want mate.

I just have to say that the whole first half if the video hits so hard home.
I'm so happy you are back and that you are feeling well, man.
I'm personally very interested in how did you make the panic and anxiety attacks all stop since I was on medication for over a year and just decided to stop with it and try some introspection, and it just kinda worked, but im still I'm not out of it yet. I'm sorry to post such a comment to make it kinda about an issue that I have, but this is kinda the thing im going through right now so would just like to hear your take on it.
Can't wait to hear what you put out in the future and for more content from you, long time fan!
    Cheers, and all the best!

    Well then.
Thanks for the insight, that puts a perspective into what I'm experiencing, I've seen things like derealization/depersonalization disorder that have also made sense but I had something at work exactly like that.

Here's hoping you feel better soon. Sounds like you've been thru the fire and flames (to use a musical pun) and you came out the other side. Take it one day at a time.
