In this video, I want to talk about Laureles. Laureles is a popular neighborhood among Expats. Today I'll focus on why it sucks relocating to that specific neighborhood.
Of over 100 clients we had so far, 90% of them loved Laureles! When we show them around during our Sneak Peek Tours we always include Laureles, Poblado, Envigado and sometimes Sabaneta and other neighborhoods.
After our clients decide to actually relocate to Medellin, they usually end up in Poblado or other neighborhoods but usually not Laureles.
    Why's that?
Laureles is a pretty small neighborhood and doesn't have a lot of NICE furnished apartments to offer. Poblado on the other hand is huge and has beautiful and modern furnished apartments all over Poblado.
That's one of the main reasons people end up living in Poblado or other neighborhoods.
Watch the whole video in order to find out more about the struggles that you'd face when choosing Laureles.

Laureles is for people looking for a quiet, no crowded place. One avantage is that is flat so can walk or ride a bike. La Castellana is also a very nice area close to laureles with less comercial activity and more residential oriented. It depends what are you looking for: be relax and quiet or have a more active night life. Also close laureles you can find the stadium and a big Sportive complex, the Volador Hill, the Biblioteca pública piloto, Nutibara hill, Conquistadores neighborhood full of threes and UPB University.

Basically this guy works for a real estate agent that has more places for rent in Poblado than Laureles, so sticks this video up saying that Laureles sucks ! The video title is just provocative to get you to watch it ! But then he then goes on to say all the good things about Laureles (green, walkable, friendly vibe etc) So he just completely contradicts himself !? And then ends by saying Laureles sucks because you can't get a specific type of apartment for x price per month !? What a ridiculous video, it saddens me that it got so many views when it's just made to be provocative and get a reaction !!

Definitely it's easier to find those modern already furnished apartments in El Poblado. Laureles, Suramericana, and Estadio just don't have that many modern apartments. Envigado is nice to consider as well. Sabaneta will become the new go to area as there are so many apartment projects going on. I have so many close to me with 3 being beside me.

Love your videos. I decided on Laureles because it was the most “walkable” upscale neighborhood I could find. But as you mention, what is referred to as Laureles has quite a few different barrios and sub-barrios. The most upscale and walkable is the area of about 3 blocks surrounding the Church of Santa Teresita del niño Jesús (in all directions). It’s often referred to as Parque Segundo but that is actually a larger area. In fact, being too close to Parque Segundo can be a problem on weekends with noise and traffic associated with the concentration of restaurants there. The same can be said about being too close to Avenida Nutibarra, coupled with the fact that Nutibarra (39th) is a major thouroghfare connecting other parts of the city. It’s very convenient for shopping to be near it but a lot noisier. Also, because the area is so walkable, and because residents and visitors are generally affluent, it attracts a disproportionate amount of beggars.

I've been living here in Laureles for over four years and the neighborhood is definitely for me partly because I am a permanent resident. I rented an unfurnished apartment and bought my own furniture because the rents for an empty apartment could cost you a fraction of the El Poblado price. What I save every month paid for the furniture a long time ago. The Laureles area without including the Estadio part runs basically from 33 St. to 44th St. and from Carrera 70 to Carrera 80. That's over 100 square blocks of a quite walkable village type atmosphere with a bit of an international feel just below the surface. From La 70 to 80 the elevation moves gradually higher to the point where the air is noticeably cooler and less contaminated. You will find the deliciously cool air in the steep hills of El Poblado also but you'd likely need to own a car or spend a lot of time in taxis or Uber.
I like meeting digital nomads and residents from abroad but still, I find that the overwhelming majority of the people on the streets in Laureles are Colombian. For those who want complete immersion in Colombian culture there are many neighborhoods where few foreigners are to be seen and the cost of rent is even less but they won't match the variety of restaurants to be found especially in El Poblado and to some extent in Laureles.

I'm no longer interested in a wild nightlife or a lot of dating of younger men, but I do want to be in a place where there are at least a few LGBT people around and where it's safe and nice. We would happily stay in Estadio for a Fútbol weekend again, there's quite the party atmosphere on La Setenta (70). As others have noted, Belén seems to be thriving as well. I walked through on several occasions and (pre covid19) there was a growing residential economy. All worth checking out some day imho.

However, there are enough Americans and Europeans in Medellin in recent years that the novelty has worn off a bit. Main things to do to minimize the issue are to dress like the locals, don't wear jewelry or expensive watches, and never pull your phone out when on the street.
