@@reidb18 However Joan’s real name was Lucille LeSueur. Bette was born Ruth Elizabeth Davis but everyone called her Betty which is a diminutive of Elizabeth. Many people went by their middle name in those days. Some people still do. She changed the spelling to Bette after the character in “ La Cousine Bette”. Jessica Lange, who played Crawford in “Feud” also played Cousin Bette in the 1998 film.
First off, her name is Bette Davis. It is pronounced "Bett-e" but some people let the "e" be silent. Joan Crawford, for example, who is not british but had a prim way of talking would do so.
Having in England for many years, I can tell you that in general the Brits called her "Bet." It is doubtful that anyone in Hollywood did, including the affected Miss Crawford, who presumably heard her name spoken, and pronounced correctly, far more than she would have liked. It is doubtful that Joan said "Bet."
I'm a Brit and would call her "Betty", but many of us also tend to shorten others' names. Someone more familiar with a "Betty" might call her Bet, as in the case here with Joan. My mum is called Marie officially, but she's always been known as Millie, and others like her brothers or my dad might shorten that still to just Mil - "throw the kettle on Mil". Shortening someone's name like that is more an endearment from familiarity, than a mispronunciation.
@@astafford2901 Actually, if you watch Crawford's BBC interview from 1966, she corrects the interviewer when he pronounces it Bet. She says something like "she would kill you if she heard you say it like that - it's bet-tee".
I love Bette and Joan...and drag. But the guy's LOW voice (playing Joan) is super distracting... Bette's character is spot on PERFECT, AMAZING! Wish she found an equally good actor/actress to play Joan. :(
Mark Gatiss is marvellous!
That's terrifying how good the impression of Bette Davis is.
These two are the best!
Damn Mycroft you in too deep
Give us more Joan and Bette!
Bette would be pissed off that you mentioned Joan first! : l
Joan was the eldest, the first to begin her career & alphabetically Crawford is before Davis. Lol
@@danseabreeze1404 In this case Bette would forgive him, because Joan is portraited by a man.
