To everyone upset about all the two-parters: Any time a video's script is over five pages long (which ends up being a video 22+ minutes), it becomes a two-parter so that I have the time to cover everything necessary while protecting the sanity of the editors and ensuring that I get an episode out on a regular basis. In this case, since so much of the theory hinges on a history of comics, I needed to take a lot of time up front to ensure everyone was on the same page regarding the evolution of the Joker. *I'm just trying to do the theories justice by being as thorough as possible. And with franchises like this, there's A LOT to cover!*

Thanks for understanding! It takes a lot of work to put these together, and for the sanity of the editors, anything over 5 pages becomes really rough for them to handle. Plus, I know from the data that people don't watch the full episodes when they're over 20-ish minutes, so I try to keep them to the right length for people to enjoy the WHOLE thing! 😀

@Morgan._.Attrill. I agree with you there, I love both Christian's Batman and Heath's Joker the best, they just play those characters SO well. When you see both characters together they are so believable. Although I do like the new justice league gang though too as Ben Affleck's version seems to go well with the new league characters and I will check out the new Joker film too as I see all of the newer ones as just a different version, or even another reality really.

Hey Matpat. I had an interesting idea for a theory. It revolves around the universe of Avatar (both the last airbender and legend of korra). Not the characters themselves, but the physics around them. If you're familiar with the series, you'll know that certain people of each nation have the power to bend one of the 4 elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Certain users of these elements can bend other elements which correspond with their own element. For example; Water benders can become blood benders, earth benders can become metal or lava benders, ETC. But my theory revolves around fire benders. Now certain fire benders can wield lightning and some can even create explosions. But what if there's no such thing as a fire bender, but an energy bender!? Now I know that in AtLoK Korra can bend pure energy in the avatar state, but that's not what I'm getting at. I'm talking about heat or light energy. Now for fire to exist, there has to be three substances available: Heat, Oxygen, and a fuel. Now fire benders probably don't produce all three of these things. They wouldn't produce oxygen just to burn it instantly. So obviously, the oxygen is all around them. And in the avatar universe, fire bending is the only element without substance, but it comes from the "chii" within the body. My guess is that the chii supplies the fuel for the fire. It's worth noting that all people have chii in the avatar universe, not just elemental benders. But the only thing left is heat, and that's where the fire bender's abilities come into play. They don't create fire on the spot, but rather produce heat and have the other elements of the substances needed to produce fire. But if they only produce heat, then how do they produce lightning and explosives? The answer is that they don't actually produce fire, nor heat, but energy. I've just went over how they produce heat energy. But It seems that some of them can produce electrical energy (to create lightning) and kinetic energy (to create explosives). But does the limit to their power and range of abilities stop there? If they could harness light energy, could they bend unstable laser beams!? If they could harness sound energy, could they create sonic booms!? Matpat, If you covered this topic, it would make me a really happy 14 year old boy who just covered different energies in chemistry last year! Please cover this as my fingers are almost sore from typing it! LOL! It’s theorized that Jared’s Joker, is really Jason Todd, (The second Robin) after being kidnapped, tortured, and brainwashed by the real Joker. Of course though, in the movie Batman Beyond: Joker returns, and Batman the animated series season 4, the creators switched names between Jason Todd and Tim Drake (The third Robin.) I honestly have NO idea why they did that, they got everything right except for the name change. Maybe they were just trying to be creative 🤷♂️
When I was a kid my brother had a compilation of Bob Kane's Bat man, the actual originals, and I loved the original Joker. The Golden age Joker who was a criminal master mind. I specifically remember this series where Joker broke out of prison and uses some series of symbols to communicate his plan to hijack a movie set, rob a museum of a clock or a collection of police badges or something. Point was that he was insanely smart and a serial killer. He placed TNT on the Clapper of a bell so that when it rolled, the tower would explode and drop debris onto the civilians below.
It would be really cool if they worked the three different jokers into the story more where even Harley Quinn didnt know, and used that edge to more thoroughly explain Harley and Jokers rollercoaster type relationship

+Awho Chen I wouldn't consider him anything close to a mastermind though. He didn't corrupt the Belle Reve guard, the guard was already corrupted. He gambled and abused inmates. The joker only used the fear of death to force him to be on his side. Jared leto's joker was a complete disappointment, he served minimal function in the movie and some how survived a helicopter crash without explanation. The dam helicopter blew up yet he came out unscathed.

He obtained a spec ops chopper and a number of professionals to break into Belle Reve. That's a plan. Another way to see it is through elimination. He is must definitely not the Prankster. And if he isn't the Mastermind then he is a controlled Psychopath (which doesn't make sense). I'm not making this comment on the quality of his acting but on the idea of which type of Joker the Leto Joker is.

I think he's actually the golden age joker...because in the movie he is supposed to resemble a kind of syndicate leader and be a bit of a businessman rather than an unpredictable psycho...just my speculation

This theory is incredibly stupid. If you count all these Jokers then you have to count all the Batmans too, and none of it makes any sense. Not only that, but to me at least, the coolest part about the Joker's origin is the lack of one. His history is irrelevant because he is not defined by anything. It is impossible to predict his actions because of this.
You probably didn't finish the video. The theory isn't actually suggesting he's the exact same Joker as one of the existing Jokers but that he fits into one of three different types of Joker that the existing live action Jokers have already covered.

SPOILERS!!!!!! (kinda) probably the bronze age joker. He's a psychopath but deals with mental illness. The modern age joker is more "can't exist with Batman" "batman is the yin to his yang" but joker didn't have batman yet. Also the new movie is set in the 70s and the bronze age started in 1970 so it would fit nicely.

Which then leaves us with the 'prankster' Joker slot still empty for this modern era of Joker storytelling post Nolan/Nicholson/Romero. Since Phoenix's Joker takes place in the year 1981, and Leto's is in 2016, I like to theorize that Phoenix's is the 'original Joker' locked away in Arkham Asylum, and at some point, Leto's character met up with him and got inspired and thus he became the 2nd Joker.

When you see both characters together they are so believable. Although I do like the new justice league gang though too as Ben Affleck's version seems to go well with the new league characters and I will check out the new Joker film too as I see all of the newer ones as just a different version, or even another reality really.
Without Ledger, anyway. Bale was probably the 3rd worst incarnation of Batman in film. Yes, I know; the movies were good, but it's not really Batman making them good; the movies were good because of setup and direction. Bale is lifeless, wooden, and unbelievable.

Hey Matpat. I had an interesting idea for a theory. It revolves around the universe of Avatar (both the last airbender and legend of korra). Not the characters themselves, but the physics around them. If you're familiar with the series, you'll know that certain people of each nation have the power to bend one of the 4 elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Certain users of these elements can bend other elements which correspond with their own element. For example; Water benders can become blood benders, earth benders can become metal or lava benders, ETC. But my theory revolves around fire benders. Now certain fire benders can wield lightning and some can even create explosions. But what if there's no such thing as a fire bender, but an energy bender!? Now I know that in AtLoK Korra can bend pure energy in the avatar state, but that's not what I'm getting at. I'm talking about heat or light energy. Now for fire to exist, there has to be three substances available: Heat, Oxygen, and a fuel. Now fire benders probably don't produce all three of these things. They wouldn't produce oxygen just to burn it instantly. So obviously, the oxygen is all around them. And in the avatar universe, fire bending is the only element without substance, but it comes from the "chii" within the body. My guess is that the chii supplies the fuel for the fire. It's worth noting that all people have chii in the avatar universe, not just elemental benders. But the only thing left is heat, and that's where the fire bender's abilities come into play. They don't create fire on the spot, but rather produce heat and have the other elements of the substances needed to produce fire. But if they only produce heat, then how do they produce lightning and explosives? The answer is that they don't actually produce fire, nor heat, but energy. I've just went over how they produce heat energy. But It seems that some of them can produce electrical energy (to create lightning) and kinetic energy (to create explosives). But does the limit to their power and range of abilities stop there? If they could harness light energy, could they bend unstable laser beams!? If they could harness sound energy, could they create sonic booms!? Matpat, If you covered this topic, it would make me a really happy 14 year old boy who just covered different energies in chemistry last year! Please cover this as my fingers are almost sore from typing it! LOL! It’s theorized that Jared’s Joker, is really Jason Todd, (The second Robin) after being kidnapped, tortured, and brainwashed by the real Joker. Of course though, in the movie Batman Beyond: Joker returns, and Batman the animated series season 4, the creators switched names between Jason Todd and Tim Drake (The third Robin.) I honestly have NO idea why they did that, they got everything right except for the name change. Maybe they were just trying to be creative 🤷♂️

When I was a kid my brother had a compilation of Bob Kane's Bat man, the actual originals, and I loved the original Joker. The Golden age Joker who was a criminal master mind. I specifically remember this series where Joker broke out of prison and uses some series of symbols to communicate his plan to hijack a movie set, rob a museum of a clock or a collection of police badges or something. Point was that he was insanely smart and a serial killer. He placed TNT on the Clapper of a bell so that when it rolled, the tower would explode and drop debris onto the civilians below.
It would be really cool if they worked the three different jokers into the story more where even Harley Quinn didnt know, and used that edge to more thoroughly explain Harley and Jokers rollercoaster type relationship

He doesn't play as the Prankster. He is not a anarchist like the Psychopath. He has a crew and manipulates the corrupt.

Psychopath wouldn't deal with something that complicated (since he also managed to obtain a device to deactivate the neck bombs which the security guard couldn't have had).
+Awho Chen I wouldn't consider him anything close to a mastermind though. He didn't corrupt the Belle Reve guard, the guard was already corrupted. He gambled and abused inmates. The joker only used the fear of death to force him to be on his side. Jared leto's joker was a complete disappointment, he served minimal function in the movie and some how survived a helicopter crash without explanation. The dam helicopter blew up yet he came out unscathed.
sshaz Qad He still used the resources he obtained as a mob/gang boss to contact said guard and obtain a defusing device. He obtained a spec ops chopper and a number of professionals to break into Belle Reve. That's a plan.
Another way to see it is through elimination. He is must definitely not the Prankster. And if he isn't the Mastermind then he is a controlled Psychopath (which doesn't make sense).
I'm not making this comment on the quality of his acting but on the idea of which type of Joker the Leto Joker is.

This theory is incredibly stupid. If you count all these Jokers then you have to count all the Batmans too, and none of it makes any sense. Not only that, but to me at least, the coolest part about the Joker's origin is the lack of one. His history is irrelevant because he is not defined by anything. It is impossible to predict his actions because of this.

probably the bronze age joker. He's a psychopath but deals with mental illness. The modern age joker is more "can't exist with Batman" "batman is the yin to his yang" but joker didn't have batman yet. Also the new movie is set in the 70s and the bronze age started in 1970 so it would fit nicely.

Since Phoenix's Joker takes place in the year 1981, and Leto's is in 2016, I like to theorize that Phoenix's is the 'original Joker' locked away in Arkham Asylum, and at some point, Leto's character met up with him and got inspired and thus he became the 2nd Joker.
