Sony Xperia XZ2 Camera Review - Sony's Big Return
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2024
- We put The Sony Xperia XZ2 head to head against the LG G7 ThinQ, OnePlus 6, and Huawei P20 Pro in this camera review. Sony always packs the most cutting-edge sensors inside its phones, but we don't always see the most cutting-edge results from its software. The Xperia XZ2 packs the same Sony IMX400 sensor as last year's phone, sporting that embedded DRAM for super slow motion at 960FPS, but this time around the new ISP inside the Snapdragon 845 chipset allows for full 1080p video at 960FPS too. In addition, Sony offers 4K HDR recording with a single button press, sporting HDR10 that works natively on the phone's screen, and a slew of other things too. How did it turn out? Check it out here, and see the galleries and videos below for a look yourself.

Man great review. The xz2 premium is going to set the new standard for camera technology
I don't disagree with that, but I hate the size of the phone. It's huge and heavy
Jared Weller i really dont care about the size. Compared to what we used to carry around, its really not that big. This thing is durable, it doesnt bend, and it feels incredible in the hand
Thanks. I want to get the XZ2 but I think I will hold out and check out the premium first and see if it bothers me or not.
Jared Weller thats what i would do personally
One of the best unbiased review. Really great review, Thanks for this.
I wish Sony would've went 480fps1080p for 30 seconds instead of this but it's nice seeing them push the boundaries.
30s slow motion will be technically unwatchable... not even movie editors would wanna do that...just imagine...
Xin Cui no I mean a 30 second record limit at 1080p resolution.
Yes the XZ2 had a very big leapt in terms of camera for Sony. Bloody brilliant!
Note that since the XZ2 is using HDR recording the video samples appear washed out compared to the others (since you can't watch HDR content on non-HDR displays)
ShreN And hence the footage is more shaky & jittery as well. Turn it off & its really comparable again.
Fleming Christian isn't jittery, you just need adjust the hz of your display to 24hz
And the way it is uploaded on RUclips.
Go and check a RUclips channel called "hokoonho" and ask him how to properly edit HDR videos from the XZ2.
He has posted lots of great-looking 4K HDR videos from the Xperia XZ2 and he did clarify that he actually has done some tweaks for every single video sample that he uploaded.
SONY, THE KING.VIVE LE ROI.
Amazing Sony!!
Thank you. I am now sorely tempted to buy the Sony phone over and above all the other newer phone releases.
K F wait for tbe xz2 premium
Wait for Sony xz2 premium
If you like a big, bulky phone that has amazing camera, wait for XZ2P or XZ3, but if you like a phone that has acceptable size and great camera, but you don't want to wait longer, go for XZ2.
It is a very thick and heavy phone though, as far as the spy pictures can tell.
K F yup, but it doesn't feel thick and heavy for me. I've never seen anyone complaining about its thickness as of now. Maybe it feels heavy for some, but not for me. I already use a case for the phone and it still feels great and not that thick. It is the most comfortable phone I've ever held.
Great review! I'm glad that my phone has a comparable, if not excellent camera capabilities to its competitors out there. I like that you keep your reviews honest, unlike most out there. Thank you so much for the video, I really appreciate it.
Sony finally fixed their camera software this time, there's more that they needed to fix (like camera UI and Aperture), but even with the same IMX400 sensor as last year's models, this phone performs way better than those phones.
Oh, P20 Pro's super slow motion isn't really a thing, the 960fps slow-mo is a lie, it is just a 240fps video that's slowed down 4 times, that's why it works in the dark.
One last thing, did you turn intelligent active mode on, on full hd videos with XZ2?
I actually like the aperture they're using. Increasing aperture naturally makes the image softer and less defined. F/2.0 is a good balance between light intake and detail.
It's mainly the noise that comes with high ISO images.
On a more relevant topic, SONY still hasn't enabled full Camera 2 API. The phone's hardware easily can but SONY hasn't allowed RAW capture to be enabled.
RAW has many benefits, the main one is allowing more parameters for processing of the image, resulting in better images to the consumer.
kapil busawah yeah, But they should steal samsung's idea of dual aperture, though. So we can get the best aperture for both daylight and low-light conditions.
Agreed about RAW capturing.
Alvin Z
"P20 Pro's super slow motion isn't really a thing, the 960fps slow-mo is a lie, it is just a 240fps video that's slowed down 4 times, that's why it works in the dark"
True, but that doesn't change the fact that it is superiour when it comes to recording slow-mo in the dark, and artifacts become obvious only when there's something moving really fast. Though, to be fair, I think Huawei's implementation of this feature is IMO the worst among current flagships which can record video at a frame rate higher than 240fps... Tap the shutter and you won't be able to record next one for 6 seconds... like wtf. They should've stuck with 480fps just like OnePlus for longer recording time and less artificial looking footage.
kapil busawah
I completely agree with what you're saying about RAW. Also full compatibility with Camera 2 API means that we would be able to enjoy HDR+ from modded GCam mod, which now supports HDR+ RAW capturing. If they actually implemented proper Camera2 API, I would jump onto Sony without a second thought.
XtraDreamLantern17 again, that's why it can capture better in the dark, because it is only at 240fps. If Sony or samsung captures slow-mo videos at 240fps, their results would be the same. Yeah, their implementation is very bad.
Thank you for being one of the few who actually talks about the camera interface! The user experience is almost as important as the photo quality and swiping between picture and video modes (a la iPhone) is simply TERRIBLE!
The One yup! It is not that intuitive. But, at least the camera is performing really well.
Excellent review, thank you
Thank you fort pointing that Sony was the first to introduce some type of "AI" in their camera. And it worked pretty well since it was introduced
Great review. What launcher were you using?
XZ2 Premium is KILLER!! Forget the P20 Pro ;)
Benjamin Kottmann bad phone ☹️☹️☹️
In the camera apps, you can go back to the camera by simply clicking on the bottom left icon (when in landscape), it will return to the camera apps section.
This camera is great, and the XZ2 Premium will probably/easily be better than that!
And I really like Sony's color rendition, it's the most natural of all the phones available right now.
Impressive review!
I always find that it is difficult to get quick and accuracy auto focus on XZ2. It's much slower than other competitors.
Do you experience that?
Just stumbled onto this video but I had to give a thumb up for your review. Subscribed.
great review. featured all strengths and weaknesses of the phone. this got me tempted to get a new xperia.
I think Sony XZ2 has the win. Because it only has one rear camera, and the competitors have more.
From my understanding, SONY is recording in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) format, not HDR10
the hdr video need to be looked in a HDR certified panel/TV to get the experience or if you need to view it in normal display you need to convert it to normal display color range which is basically compressing the information and is somewhat counterintuitive and based on the technique of conversion the video might look very saturated or worse than normal or if done right it will still be muted but it should have noticeably better dynamic range
Personally i like the seperate stills and video section. This lets you configure them both indivdually. For photo's i prefer 4:3 and downsampled to 8MP automatically and no HDR , but for video 16:9 . This is on my Z5, but the UI is identical to the one in your XZ2 video (sans the super slow button obviously) so i reckon this works the same. And switching between stills and video is pretty instant on the flick. The added "apps" - yes are seperately launched but don't care for those anyway.
2:48 - Neither P20 Pro and XZ2 have OIS, XZ2's footage looks more stable because P20 Pro doesn't have an active EIS in anything above 1080 30fps recording mode.
Thanks for the video!
Sony managed to make a great camera phone! Finally! Now hopefully XZ2 Premium will set the new standard for low-light photo/videography with its new monochrome sensor and give hard time to upcoming Note 9, Pixel 3 and Mate 20 Pro all of which are expected to have phenomenal cameras as well. Competition is always welcome and kudos to Sony for making such a massive improvement. Very impressed.
I am waiting to see what the xz2 premium can do... The show case they have in a japanese review, the low light performance is mind blowing..
The HDR recording isn't HDR10
It's Hybrid Log-Gamma
A different HDR format, and the colors depends where are you playing the video, HDR TVs does a better job, and just High End TVs are compatible with HLG.
RUclips isn't good enough yet for HDR streaming, in Windows MadVR is way better rendering HDR and HLG.
Watching this in my XZ2
You didn't even give a warning on the ant paradise you're raising, Ant-Man. Nice review btw
Okie. Fact check. Sony doesn't do OIS for their rear camera. Please androidheadlines
I agree they definitely need to update the ui
wow. great video. which is better oneplus 6 or xz2?
Naveen Prathap Sony
You could get OnePlus 6 if you can't afford Xperia XZ2 as for the price, OP6 has comparable features to other flagships for less price. But, if you can afford higher price than that, go for XZ2.
Alvin Z All I am concerned about is camera, which one is better??
Naveen Prathap look at the pictures in the video and decide yourself on which one do you like better. But for me, I like XZ2's shots better.
OnePlus 6 is kinda overrated IMO.
The true great value flagship phone to me is the Xiaomi Mi 8, with lots of great features for even less than the OnePlus 6's base model price.
Since the same camera sensor is used by the Xperia xz premium, will XZP get similar camera algorithm in future updates?
Mohit Gupta hope so, that would be the best update ever but fact is they said its sd 845 isp building bla bla which makes xz2 better than xz1 series
I don't think so, as the XZ2 has the new Spectra 280 ISP that's built inside Snapdragon 845. The algorithms on XZ2's camera has changed too. But, Sony could push some software updates to older models just to increase the quality of the photographs.
It won't reach the XZ2's camera quality, but the major change in image processing algorithm can certainly make it better, and I do really hope it comes for older Xperias.
This type of image processing can even make some old Xperias like the Z5 series to take stunning photos that are way better than they were when they were initially released.
Heck, I could go on and bet that the Xperia Z1 with this image processing software can produce images that are comparable to modern day flagship phones and definitely better than the majority of modern day mid range and budget smartphones.
This phone is trully amazing..
Intelligent observations and discussions
Can the XZ2 shot 10 fps?? taking pictures just like the xz1
Does it shoot raw?
loved the review..
Bro, SONY doesn't have OIS, many media has been bashing SONY for that.........
i wish sony will going to have an giveaway Sony Xperia XZ2..again so nice review
]
They have done it via Xperia Lounge app a few weeks ago.
I have always been a Sony user but I don't think the XZ2 video capability is as good as previous models like the XZ. I have lost many videos filmed on my XZ2 due to lag. Even with a 4K memory card or direct to internal storage it lags on 9 out of 10 videos. Not sure if it's a hardware or software problem but Sony need to sort it out either way.
Experienced those irritating issues with my old Z3 but not with XZ2. There might be something wrong with your phone or the SD Card.
Alvin Z I've had the phone fully checked and tried several different SD cards including the specialised 4K ones. I've also seen a few videos on RUclips of other users having the same problem. I personally think it's a software issue but I guess I'll have to wait and see if any future updates rectify the problem.
On-Track Rail Films yeah, some people also have problems like that, and also problems with write/read speed. But I don't have those problems, not that I know of.
Xz2 is a best camera???
How about HTC U12+ ?
Support portrait mode?
Grumpy Cat There's a "bokeh" camera apps available to download if it's not already on the phone.
Yes
There's a bokeh app inside the phone, but it works like s*** sometimes, to be honest.
Liion B the bokeh app is just Background Defocus from the Z2, they just renamed the app for the upcoming update for the XZ2 Premium.
E. S. XZ2 Premium's bokeh is different, though.
My first Sony phone was the XZ1 and it was a huge disappointment.. However I am seriously thinking about getting this phone. I have owned mostly Samsung devices all my life and I have had enough of Samsung bloat/lag.
Y
ikri switched from galaxy to lumia and after that to sony they are much better
Great video..
wow Sony !!!xz2 premium is the best camera phone on the market!
Keen to see the XZ2 premium
Where's the Pixel 2, iPhone X and S9+? LG G7 camera is unremarkable.
great review, waiting xz2 premium the new nigh king
Are photos taken in "Superior Auto" mode still supersampled from 19 megapixel down to 8 megapixels?
Bob Leung nope, they don't do that anymore since Z5.
Z5 owner here. Yep since the Z5 you can choose 23MP (4:3) , 20MP (16:9) , 8MP downsampled (4:3) and 8MP downsampled (16:9) - this can be configured independantly from your video mode. As i shoot a ton with DSLR's , i love the 4:3 aspect ratio for stills without HDR, and have the video mode with 16:9
SONY IS UNIQUE 💯
Watched on my XZ2
R u doing camera review or phone review...if you want to do camera review ,make review for dslr camera...camera is the part of mobile phone , mobile phone should not be a camera...this phone is only good for camera so this is not a smart phone..this is just a camera with calling facility other than nothing is in this phone
OIS my skinny ass... Sony is god of stabilization
What is the point of posting an article about the comparison if it's incomplete & clickbaits into watching the video to know the conclusion? Artificially inflating views much?
Nick is nethertheless able to write better stuff, as demonstrated here:
www.androidheadlines.com/2018/06/sony-xperia-xz2-review-xperias-metamorphosis.html
Why the duplication though?
honestly review bro
Sony love it
Sony doesnt have ois
Akhyar Rayhka it does have 4 axis OIS
Gintoki Sakata its EIS
Considering how well OnePlus and Google implemented EIS with the 5T and Pixel, maybe Sony can do the same.
Grumpy Cat sony eis is hands down the best next to OP6/Pixel TBH but in 1080p, when in 4k it decreased but its not that bad.
Realy sony camera they get big improvment
SONY GOD FOREVER ✌️#1 👑
Best
SONY THE BEST MOBILE CAMERA 📸 📹 👑 📲 FOREVER ✌️#1 👑
sey 30 Spyderco best? Lol noo
Is this a paid ad? The compression and sharpness on the XZ2 look absolutely horrible and its clear as day and night to everyone watching this video. What the hell did you do at 4:40 with the P20 Pro? Manual mode and underexposed on purpose?
DOPFunk no, the Pro is shit. The Intelligent mode has been slated by more than one review site and with good reason - it can make some really awful decisions and does terrible things to contrasty greens. GSMA suggest keeping it switched off for better results.
The 10mp results from the thing are horrifically over sharpened, over saturated and over contrasted. There is a shot by shot comparison between the Sony and the Pro on RUclips by Pixel Peepers and the XZ2 hands the dratted thing its ass.
Constantly amazed that people rate the Pro: its a terrible camera.
the P20 pro is a terrible camera phone, it's all marketing and no substance. The pixel is way better, hell even the old lumias are better in my opinion.
Tim Austin
Woa woa woa, stop right there man. All of the issues you just stated (oversharpening, overcontrast, oversaturation) can be remedied by simply turning off AI which you literally stated in the first paragraph. Also Pixel Peepers has never done the comparison between XZ2 and P20 Pro, I seriously don't know what you're on about.
Nope, I would disagree to the fact that the P20 Pro is sht and pure marketing.
It's not, and its advertisings are true, but Huawei hasn't polished their camera just yet.
The P20 Pro revives the old idea of a large sub-1" sensor from the old Lumia 1020 and Nokia 808 PureView, both of which have 1/1.5" and 1/1.2" sensors, respectively.
We should highly encourage everyone to go back in time with these sensors, given how it doesn't really affect the thickness of the phone, as demonstrated by the P20 Pro which even has a large 4000mAh battery.
We can just say that the XZ2 utilizes its hardware better, but it can sadly not stand a chance against the P20 Pro once its software is perfected.
Johnny Since while you have a point, the camera philosophy of the P20 pro is totally different. The processing is aimed to the average users, which want high contrast and saturated colors instead of dynamic range and color accuracy. It probably won't change and p20 pro users will have to use manual. AI on the other hand is totally useless as it chooses the wrong settings all of the time (and it's not really AI it's just an auto mode, hell even the xperia Z in 2013 had scene recognition). The only real strong point of the p20 is low light performance, that's just amazing, and I really can't wait for other brands to play around with 1/1.5"+ sensors.
sony....
sound too much like a paid review. somehow you make every point sound positive, (no product is perfect} . you also compare to other phones who's camera are just mediocre ( for high end phones) next time take a pixel, iphone or samsung into your comparison. then people atleast have something real to compare it to
Tymon he made every point sound positive? Well, he did took a critique about the camera UI and low-light performance.
Apparently, he compared the phone to the P20 Pro, in which according to many tests, is better than any Samsung and Apple phones mostly in photography.
The same results would be shown when this XZ2 is compared to the S9+ or iPhone X or Pixel 2 XL, but the fact that this phone comes close to the P20 Pro means that it even has better image quality than the 3 other ones.
P20 Pro camera just mediocore?? are you kidding??
