I have a '71, been sitting all winter, dang this video makes me want to go for a drive. This is what a sports car is made for. Man this is almost as good as sex :)
totally restored and roadrace modified a 1970 20 years ago. put a built 3.1 L motor in it with a nice cam, blueprinted SU's,(had triple Mikunis too, but never got them reliable) electronic ignition, and all the other good stuff to make it fast and stable. good for 150mph all day long. sold it to finance a business. really miss that car.
I had one as a kid... it was stock and slow with valves that would float... it always felt So scary when it got over 110 when it would start to feel more like a plane than a car... but mine had bad shocks
I can relate. I’ve taken OEM suspension above 110 but below OEM gauge max range... and I agree it was more like a plane or boat. I was young and dumb and... sh!t that was fun. 😆
I view your car as the epitome of what a classic Z car should be. I have a 72 240Z that is about 98% rust free and I'm going to build mine in a similar fashion. High compression stroker L6 with a suspension setup for road race/autoX. I would also love to get a 510 someday but finding good one is tough.
Dylan McCallister ....worth every penny! Camshaft duration and scavenging exhaust are the most significant factors in this sound relative to other L6s, in my opinion. Good luck with your project!
Big cams will do that, have you watched any of the other videos with a cammed inline 6? They can be very lopey too. Plus, who makes a 3.1L V8 that doesn't cost two arms and two legs. I can think of one company that makes a 3-3.2 liter engine but that engine costs 40k and sounds like a F1 engine. This engine is just a well built inline 6. If I had to guess it started as an L28 and was stroked out to 3.1L with a big cam to go with it.
@S30xSoshinoya Staying in the DY? I'm not sure what that means, so I'll shotgun my answer. It's not stock. Koni 2-way race struts, 350/325# springs, heim-joint fully adjustable sways, camber plates, etc. The conditions of the road weren't the greatest and my slicks are near the end of their life cycle. Also, the rear end is a 4.37 R180 with a Quaiffe ATB, so the manner in which the rear swings out / breaks loose is different than that of a LSD: very touchy / requires different inputs.
The motor seized (kept in storage too long) before I was able to dyno it. Previous iteration had 265 hp to the wheels, but was significantly restricted by street exhaust. Between the full race exhaust and some other "in the weeds" engine internals, I'm guestimating 285+ whp, but now we'll never know. Hoping to have everything rebuilt (and dynoed) by the spring of '13...
My outer-valve-springs only setup limits my revs to 7600rpm max, though I have the damper/crank/flywheel balanced to 10k. My other springs are good to 9200rpm, but the outer-only setup saves some drivetrain loss. Cam drops out by 7250-7500 anyway. At 5:09 you can hear the rev limiter kick in for a second. I had it set to around 7250 or so because I didn't have A/F data and didn't want to harm the motor should it be too lean.
Agreed. This was the first time I drove it after tuning it, and the pedal sensitivity was beyond my skill level. I theorize it will remain so until I get a throttle cable vice bellcranks / pushrods. Too bad the car is on blocks. :(
Oh yea...Arkansas has some sweet opportunities for a Z. I live In Tulsa but we have a place at flint ridge, Highway 10? oh yea, I am there... Great video, great sound and some nice wheel work...
im in your general area. i get a kick out of the performance bike magazines when they refer to our roads as americas best kept secret. im a 2am ninja. narrows down the traffic to just me and the wildlife.
An online source. Weren't that expensive, $15-25 I want to say. As I recall I tried 2-3 varieties before the style/fit was just right. Then I bought 2 extra since they get sweaty when racing in July / will eventually need replacing.
It didn't seize in storage, it seized after running for a few minutes after storage while I investigated the lack of oil pressure. I haven't touched the motor yet. I have some other things going on and don't have the cash for a project right now. How is it pointless to tear down a dedicated race motor and inspect for damage? That *is* the point: to inspect for damage. Something encountered a friction bind, or it wouldn't have seized.
Weggman Hillard I was thinking the same but honestly I’d like to hear it run around. Maybe not crossing the double yellow around the corners so much....
i must say that the steering had a little more play then it should. but sick z!!! i miss the sound of the high revs N/A. i own a 73 240z turbo. if you want to see it look under youtube @ nicks turbo z first one doing a donut lol
Motor is rebuilt, but I can't mount it just yet. I'm waiting to finish modifying my crossmember (pivot point relocation) for fully adjustable LCAs ( + TC rods). Hoping to have the car fully race worthy by next spring.
Mels VW Oil pump failure leading to a full engine seize in about 30 seconds at idle. Very little internal damage, fortunately. Replaced the crank bearings, cam towers, two valves that were damaged, and upgraded to lightweight rockers. The rebuilt motor has been wrapped in cellophane for months... Budget and moving has put the project on hold.
,I can understand that. Good luck. We just finished turbo install on 260z with megasquurt. Think we hurt a rod bearing during tune on dyno. Made 280hp 310tq. Going to znationals anyways next week
I don't have any reason to believe that you should expect your motor to have seized, I still have no idea what happened. If you want to be safe, remove each spark plug and spray oil into each cylinder, remove the camshaft cover and lubricate everything with oil, and finally... turn the crank by hand. That's what I'd do.
Fresh engines stick when they sit, because they are tight. Pour some SeaFoam and/or some Marvel mystery oil in the holes and let it soak for a bit. I hope you haven't already torn the engine down, because it would be completely pointless.
@@zredbaron240 I can’t get over your car sir. I was tempted to do a VQ swap in my 240 but yours has sealed the deal! Thank you. @@BakerDeltaFour thanks for sharing your excitement and motivation. Good luck on your upcoming build! The car sounds raw here because it has no muffler, no exhaust - just open headers and no hood here. 😉 Was enough to leave one’s ears a bit deafened afterward, not recommended. 😅 In later videos the car has two mufflers in series in order to get under ~96 dB. Thanks again for your enthusiasm, I have been wanting to upload more videos from my hard drive. Lots of races and journeying never got shared. Hah! This actually happened, the day before, after I tuned the car and was buttoning up the trailer. I'm sorry. I had a 1st series 240z(1972) w/ 2 down draft carbs. 23k original miles. If you dropped your rpm's going into a turn it was slide city.Take your foot off that pedal and the rear end came right off the road. That isn't a 240 straight six. Way to rough. Sounds like a big block.
The reason you scared your self @4:00 is the fact that the rear end locks momentarily on a down shift because you don't blip the throttle while double de clutching (rev match) on your down shifts...and if the road was 'slippery' why did you drive so hard on an unfamiliar road...?
I could literally watch this all day! good shishh!
I watch it regularly. :)
What an amazing tune you did. Sounds like it craves for speed and more like there isn't enough gears to satisfy that beast. Congrats!!! Love it.

MSA 3-spoke mahogany. it comes as a brushed matte aluminum finish, but I had it professionally polished.
