Vocal Lesson: Mike Ferfolia, professional vocalist and instructor at Metalworks Institute, teaches you how to sing background and backup vocals in this singing tutorial.
In this lesson, Mike talks about matching the vowel sounds of the lead singer by blending the harmony and lead parts together. While consonants will always sound similar no matter what, it is important that you are trying to match and even emulate the way the lead vocalist is singing vowels so that you can sound like them tonally. It is also important to rehearse with them before performing so that you can get a better grasp on their phrasing and timing when they sing. Mike says that "As a background singer it's your job to do just that. Sing in the background and basically make the lead singer look really good."
Beginner, intermediate and advanced vocalists are encouraged to practice these techniques. Follow these basic steps to improve you're effectiveness as a background singer dramatically!

I am so glad you mentioned the importance of vowels in singing background. I sang background for my own recording. I didn't match up the vowels and I could hear the dissidence. Now I will try listening to me!! When I hear Beyonce's background singers, The Mamas, " I hear complete vowel tones in sync. The Mamas sound just like Beyonce. In classical choral music a lot of importance is placed on vowel tones. In rock, gospel and r&b, we tend to not pay attention to this very important skill.

Tune, asimilate Vowels, Phrases, Timing, support, Sing in the Background, in some cases, emulate the way they are singing...sound like them totally..
As a Backup Singer...thats your Work.
As a Backup singer,be very aware of what the lead singer is singing..

I've noticed in modern country, most backup vocals seem to be done mainly with a higher harmony in male falsetto. In particular Jason Aldean, and basically everything on the radio with male lead singers, there is also a male backup singer in falsetto. Am i interpreting this correctly?
